The NHL and NHL Players' Association have given up on the possibility of staging the next World Cup of Hockey in September 2020 but will continue collective bargaining talks.

In separate statements released Wednesday, the league and NHLPA announced that there's not enough time to put together a World Cup in roughly 20 months. The sides met earlier in the day in Toronto to discuss the World Cup as part of collective bargaining talks after holding an informal meeting in Las Vegas on Jan. 10 that lasted more than two hours.

Not holding the World Cup in September 2020 is consequential because it was so closely linked to the potential of labour peace in hockey. But the NHL and NHLPA plan to meet again soon with the goal of avoiding a potential work stoppage. A lockout wiped out the 2004-05 season; another lasted more than three months in 2012-13.

The current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) runs until 2022, but either owners or players could choose this September to opt out and end it Sept. 15, 2020. Players' escrow payments and Olympic participation are significant issues that must be overcome to avoid either side re-opening the CBA.

The league's deputy commissioner, Bill Daly, told The Associated Press last week he believed there was a commitment by both sides to continue talking and "see if we can move forward on something that might work for a CBA extension."

"While the parties have now joined the concluded that it is no longer realistic to try to schedule a World Cup of Hockey for the fall of 2020, they plan to continue their dialogue with the hope of being able to schedule the next World Cup event as part of a broader agreement, which would include a long-term international event calendar," the NHL said in a statement.

The 2016 World Cup of Hockey generated revenue that was split evenly among owners and players, and the goal is to keep that event going with another edition at a time later than September 2020.

"The players are focused on finding the proper time to schedule the World Cup of Hockey within the context of an overall international hockey calendar," the NHLPA said in a statement. "We look forward to continuing our discussions with the league."

Epic Games like to share new cosmetic items on the weekend, some of which also turn out to be the most wanted among fans.

And tonight appears to have seen the latest big update to the item shop, this time adding the Fortnite Omen skin.

The new Legendary outfit is now live on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC and Mobile platforms, providing an intriguing new look.

The Omen comes with its own unique Cape Back Bling, as well as a hefty price tag.

Like all Legendary skins, the Omen costs 2,000 V-Bucks, which also has an additional item that can make the complete set.

The Oracle Axe Harvesting Tool completes the mystical looks but will cost fans 1,200 V-Bucks to add to their collection.

These new items are available now but comes with a countdown timer on all platforms.

To add the new pieces to your collection, fans will need to head over to the Fortnite shop within the next 48hrs.

After that, the new items will be swapped out by other skins and cosmetics, with no confirmed date for their return.

Most skins do eventually cycle back in via Epic Games’ popular online shop, but it could be away for a while.

It should be noted that while the Omen skin may catch the eye of players for its unique look, it won’t add much else.

The Legendary outfit does not harbour any special abilities, with Epic Games make it clear that everything in their store is cosmetic only.

Dataminers actually found the Omen skin before its release, hiding in one of the game’s most recent updates.

Fans also found another skin called Fate, which looks set to be released later this month.

It follows news that Fortnite developer Epic Games has dropped a huge hint about Battle Royale season 5.

Eagle-eyed Nintendo Switch players have spotted a brand new countdown clock on television sets within the game.

Currently only appearing on Nintendo Switch (via FortniteInsider), it’s believed the clocks are linked to the mysterious Visitor character.

The latest hidden loading screen featured an image of the Visitor preparing to launch a rocket.

A rocket hologram can also be spotted in the super villain lair within the Battle Royale map.

It’s possible Epic Games will release a brand new post-apocalyptic map for the next season/

The countdown timer comes to an end on Tuesday, so expect to find out more after the release of the next update.

Something similar happened during the transition between Season 3 and Season 4.

More teasers are expected to be shared by Epic Games in the coming weeks.

While the HP Pavilion line encompasses many types of all-purpose machines, the company is branching out with a new family of gaming PCs. Gone will be the Pavilion Power line, making room for the newly announced Pavilion Gaming family. HP says the line, consisting of laptops and desktops, is for gamers who value both gaming and entertainment but don’t need the top-tier specs and customization that come with the company’s Omen devices.

The 15-inch Pavilion Gaming laptop takes design notes from existing Omen laptops but implements them in a less ostentatious way. The all-black chassis has angled edges for style and venting. HP pushed the fans to the corners of this laptop, which allows more efficient air flow thanks to the vents at the angled corners. Geometric speaker grilles similar to those on other Pavilion laptops sit above the keys, and some models have an all-aluminum keyboard area. Lights underneath the keys and behind the HP logo on the lid offer accents in either white, green, or violet, depending on the model, and each display (it supports FHD at 144Hz, FHD at 60Hz, and 4K panels) is hugged by 9.8mm bezels on the left and right sides.

HP is getting into the game streaming arena — though probably not in the way you’d expect. With the aptly titled “Omen Game Stream” app, it’ll integrate the feature in all of its gaming PCs later this spring. Basically, you’ll be able to take advantage of the powerful hardware from an Omen machine to play games on just about any PC over the internet. It’s the sort of thing we’ve seen from NVIDIA and Valve, both of which offer in-home streaming solutions. With this app, HP could make life a lot easier for gamers who need their Overwatch fix when they’re away from their rigs.

At the heart of Omen Game Stream is technology from Parsec, which can deliver 1080p gaming at up up 60 frames per second. As usual with these types of solutions, what you’re actually seeing is a video of what the more powerful machine is outputting. In a brief controlled demo from HP, the app appeared to deliver a smooth experience while streaming some modern games. But of course, that was being shown under ideal internet conditions.

HP claims you’ll be able to stream games from anywhere with a “strong” internet connection, but it’s not offering any specifics about bandwidth minimums yet.

And the rash of yellow cards received combined with its lack of results continues an interesting trend at Victory under Kevin Muscat’s rule.

Victory players have combined for a total of 22 yellow cards this season at an average of 2.75 per game.

Included in that are both the yellow cards Mitch Austin received against Western Sydney on Melbourne Cup eve, as well as Mark Milligan’s red card against Newcastle last Thursday which will keep him out of Sunday’s trip to Wellington.

The yellow card tally is tracking similarly to the 2015-16 season in which Victory finished sixth and crashed out of the finals at the first hurdle.

In that 28-game campaign the team copped 76 yellows at an average of 2.71 per game.

But in the two other full seasons in which Muscat has been in charge, the yellow card count has been much lower — and both of those seasons ended in grand final appearances.

Victory registered 62 yellows (average of 2.14 per game) in its 2014-15 championship season, while last season it copped just 64 yellows (at an average of 2.2).

Muscat’s men have also this season committed 127 fouls at an average of 15.9 per game.

Only Melbourne City (135) and Brisbane (132) have been whistled more times.

And Victory is, along with City and Central Coast, one of just three teams to have two players sent off this season.

HP gave its Omen gaming line a big boost before this year’s E3 with the launch of new gaming PCs, peripherals, a GPU accelerator, and a VR backpack. While the company wants to provide devices for all kinds of gamers, its newest launch targets enthusiasts who don’t want to compromise power when choosing a portable device. The new Omen X laptop is a behemoth gaming notebook, measuring 16.73 x 12.88 x 1.43 inches and weighing 10.69 pounds. All that space is for good reason: the Omen X trades svelte for substance as it features a bunch of perks typically only seen in stationary gaming PCs.

One of the biggest things HP emphasized about the Omen X laptop is its overclocking abilities. The Omen X laptop can be configured how you’d like and you can choose to get it with Intel’s 7th gen Core i7-7820HK CPU, which is factory unlocked for overclocking. Gaming enthusiasts (and general PC enthusiast as well) are more likely to experiment with overclocking their devices to get the most performance out of the CPU as possible. However, that would normally be taxing on the entire system and the processor in particular since it produces extra heat.

As such, HP designed the internals of the Omen X laptop differently from those in its previous Omen laptops to better handle the heat produced by overclocking. HP also claims the design reduces thermal throttling that can limit the overclocking affects. The company removed the optical drive and included higher-performance fans that allow for more airflow through the machine than in the existing Omen laptops. With the help of an integrated vapor chamber and bottom vent holes, the internals better move heat away from the important stuff (CPU, GPU) and expel air through the back and sides of the laptop (which also keeps the heat away from you, the user).

IF you’re into omens then Dani Stevens has provided a good one in the women’s discus qualifying.

The Australian didn’t muck around, stepping into the cage and letting rip an impressive throw of 65.56m which gained her automatic entry into Sunday’s final.

And the omen?

The last time Stevens threw an automatic qualifying throw on her first attempt was at the 2009 world championships in Berlin where she won the gold medal.

“It’s always the dream doing it on your fist round throw in qualifying, so I am stoked it was a decent throw as well,” she said.

“I was pretty nervous as I was going in there but it is great, I’m in the final.

“I think the only other time I have done it on my first throw was in Berlin (in 2009). I think it was a 62 auto then so I am really happy.

“The fact that (Yaime) Perez came out and threw 65 I thought right and it kind of got me geed up a bit.”

Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic produced the longest qualifying throw of 69.67m.

Stevens finished fourth at last year’s Rio Olympics and believes she is in better shape and form at these world championships.
