And for today’s example, we turn to photographer and innovator Yann Phillippe, who found himself longing to shoot some photos on “Aerochrome III”, Kodak’s infrared-sensitive, “false-color” reversal film, initially designed for military or cartography purposes, that created striking photographs with unusual color temperatures. Trouble was, Kodak stopped manufacturing the film years ago, and while we’ve seen a swing back to the real stuff, speciality items like this haven’t yet made a comeback.

So Phillippe went to work, developing an IR Chrome infrared filter that would allow him to take old-school IR photos with his digital camera. These are just some of the awe-inspiring results; check out more on his website or on Instagram, and if you’re a photographer yourself, you can buy the filter here.

  • Many vehicles are now equipped with GPS navigation systems that use digital maps, rendered in infotainment screens.
  • Recently, I tested a $ 52,000 Cadillac XT4 crossover SUV that lacked this feature. Instead, it had an older system, called “Turn-by-Turn.”
  • I’ve always been a fan if Turn-by-Turn, and on the XT4, I found that I preferred it over the more familiar systems.

We’ve gotten so used to GPS navigation system on smartphones and in vehicles that at Business Insider, when we encounter a car that doesn’t have a mapping setup, it can be sort of disorienting (pardon the pun).

Every so often, this happens on a mass-market vehicle. It almost never happens with a luxury car. And even when we think we might not have GPS mapping, we’ve been known to push buttons and dig around in an infotainment system in the vain hope that we might find some colorful digital coordinates.

That quest was familiar when I recently sampled the all-new 2019 Cadillac XT4, a compact crossover SUV from the luxury brand. My test car, which priced at about $ 52,000, did not include a $ 1,500 optional technology package that would have added mapping (along with some other features).

The XT4 was rather superb, but in at least one respect it was a throwback for me: instead of mapped directions, with that familiar colored line to follow on a route, it showcased turn-by-turn navigation accessed through General Motors’ good old OnStar system.

How did turn-by-turn compare with the more “modern” systems? Read on to find out.

GPS mapping has become quite sophisticated in the digital age. Here we have Audi’s MMI with Virtual Cockpit, a Google Maps-powered system that can render landscapes and destinations in great detail.

‘Eat it, Elon’: Internet greets Kalashnikov electric supercar with love & hate for old-school looks https://briefnews.eu/eat-it-elon-internet-greets-kalashnikov-electric-supercar-with-love-hate-for-old-school-looks/ https://briefnews.eu/eat-it-elon-internet-greets-kalashnikov-electric-supercar-with-love-hate-for-old-school-looks/#respond Thu, 23 Aug 2018 20:18:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/eat-it-elon-internet-greets-kalashnikov-electric-supercar-with-love-hate-for-old-school-looks/

The just-unveiled Russian electric supercar concept by AK-47 creator Kalashnikov has caused heated debate online. Many mocked its old-school design, while others said they’d gladly drive such a vehicle for that very same reason.

Forestalling the obvious parallels with Elon Musk’s creations, Kalashnikov Concern said that its CV-1 “electric supercar concept… will allow us to stand in line with the world’s electric car manufacturers, like Tesla, and compete with them.”

The concept indeed incorporated several original solutions developed within the company, including a high-speed battery modular control system and a “revolutionary” compact inverter, the maker said.

But the internet didn’t care much about the technical side as it unleashed a wave of sarcasm about the vehicle’s exterior – which, some believed, doesn’t live up to the touted “supercar” status.

Notably, the company didn’t hide the fact that its electric car concept was based on the body of IZh 2125 “Kombi,” a legendary compact car that hit Soviet roads back in 1973. The choice seems justified as Izhevsk-based Kalashnikov Concern is the successor of Izhmash, famed as both a defense manufacturer and a maker of the old-school Soviet-designed cars.

“How can I unsee this?” one of the commentators wondered, making it clear that he disagreed with the design decision for CV-1.

“The very looks of this concept leave no doubt that this is a Tesla killer. Seriously,” another sarcastic comment read. It was echoed by the user, who asked a question: “How are the Tesla stocks doing? Have they plunged already?”

“It’s a real photo. Not a joke, Elon Musk sucks,” a user mused. “Eat it, Elon,” the other commentators added, jokingly suggesting that the US tech entrepreneur now had little choice but to shut down Tesla.

“I have a strong feeling that they didn’t even touch the body as they just found it in the junkyard and put the kit on it,” one of the tweets read.

Suspicions were also raised that the “Kombi” body was introduced for the Kalashnikov’s concept because it allowed space for a longer power cord – that would determine the actual length of the supercar’s journeys.

However, many commentators weren’t that toxic at all, saying that their parents and grandparents used to drive the IZh 2125 “Kombi” and seeing it revived brought a lot of pleasant childhood memories back.

The use of a Soviet car as a source of inspiration was actually trendy, a commentator argued, calling it an example of “a fashionable new retro format.”

“IZh ‘Kombi’ was always a stellar ride,” another one said, while the third argued that if Kalashnikov’s electric car “will be as reliable, powerful and cheap as the ‘Kombi’ then it’s a great idea.”

“I’m looking at this IZh ‘Kombi’ and it’s absolutely fabulous! I’d buy this one,” one of the commentators wrote.

This is actually the second concept from Kalashnikov this week that got roasted over its looks. The company’s walker robot model, also unveiled at the Army-2018 expo, caused frenzy on social media.

Some chastised the robot –reportedly dubbed ‘Igoryok’– over its resemblance to ED-209 from the ‘Robocop’ movie, while others said that its stretched out arms were perfect for a job as a waiter.

This Old-School Barbecue Joint Is Known for Its Steaks… and Whip-Cracking https://briefnews.eu/this-old-school-barbecue-joint-is-known-for-its-steaks-and-whip-cracking/ https://briefnews.eu/this-old-school-barbecue-joint-is-known-for-its-steaks-and-whip-cracking/#respond Sun, 08 Jul 2018 15:11:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-old-school-barbecue-joint-is-known-for-its-steaks-and-whip-cracking/ The dessert menu at Cape Town’s Bar-B-Que Steakhouse is basic, but if you’re not feeling like something sweet — and if you ask nicely — chef and owner Marius Strauss will crack his kudu-and-bushbuck hide bullwhip for you. His copper bangles glinting in the headlights on always-busy Voortrekker Road, he’ll deftly maneuver the 10-foot strip of hide, sending earsplitting cracks into the grimy night sky. If you’re really lucky, he may even let you have a go.

Wedged between a bridal hire spot and a lawnmower hospital, Bar-B-Que Steakhouse has been serving up steaks, ribs and schnitzels since 1969. The 70-seat restaurant has a reputation for massive portions (“I always give big people a little extra,” says Strauss.) and even huger welcomes — Strauss makes a point of sitting down at every table for a chat, and he talks of “friends” not “customers.”

Nick Dall for OZY

That said, its dimly lit, wood-paneled interior is a monument to a chapter of South African history that many are trying to forget. The much-maligned old South African flag near the entrance gets quite a lot of flak on TripAdvisor, but Strauss says it “means fokol” to him and should be seen in context. The restaurant is chock-a-block with historical artifacts from the Great Trek, the Boer War and even Robben Island — most of which were there already when Strauss bought the place — in 1989!

The ladies’ ribs ($ 10), are big enough to down most rugby forwards.

Not that Bar-B-Que’s 2,000 monthly covers are complaining. The consistent quality of the food (Strauss grills every single dish himself — apart from the salads, which he says are “not food” — and boasts that his chip oil is “the cleanest in Cape Town”) coupled with his legendary hospitality means that dinner bookings are essential. Dining at the Bar-B-Que “has become a bit of a ritual for me,” says longtime regular Antony Schneider, who explains that it’s about a lot more than just the food: “It’s great to go somewhere with no pretense.”

The menu — almost as long as the bullwhip — includes quite a bit of seafood (calamari, fish, mussels) and a couple of veggie options (crumbed mushrooms, those salads), but most folks come here for the meat — and the cloyingly good sauces that smother it. The ladies’ ribs ($ 10) are big enough to down most rugby forwards, and the monkey gland rump ($ 13 for at least 300 grams of dry-aged SA beef smothered in a tangy tomato and chutney sauce) is a true South African classic. All meals come with fries, rice or a baked potato — and a mandatory dollop of sweet pumpkin. And a half-liter carafe of the surprisingly smooth house red will set you back only $ 4.50.

Schnitzel lovers can choose from an array of toppings ranging from simple to audacious. The sliced banana, ham and hot cheddar cheese on the Copacabana are probably a bridge too far for most. But that’s precisely the point — dining at the Bar-B-Que Steakhouse is all about abandoning your comfort zone. As Strauss always says, “On a bad gravel road, never ever swerve for a rabbit.”

Go There: Bar-B-Que Steakhouse

  • Location: The Bar-B-Que Steakhouse is in a grimy but perfectly safe part of town about 10 miles from the city center. An Uber will set you back around $ 17. Map.
  • Hours: Open for lunch Tuesdays to Fridays (12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.) and dinner Tuesdays to Saturdays (6:15 p.m. until late).
  • Pro Tip: The Namaqualand Special ($ 23) is advertised as “1 kilogram rump for the very hungry,” but it usually weighs closer to 1.3 kilograms, according to Strauss.

Arthurian Legends Gives Medieval Action An Old-School Twist https://briefnews.eu/arthurian-legends-gives-medieval-action-an-old-school-twist/ https://briefnews.eu/arthurian-legends-gives-medieval-action-an-old-school-twist/#respond Tue, 06 Feb 2018 05:45:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/arthurian-legends-gives-medieval-action-an-old-school-twist/ 3B3A6D85-306F-4C9B-8C19-848ABE8A1BB1.png
First person melee has gotten its fair share of iterations and styles in games large amd small, from Dead Island to Chivalry. Currently in development for PC, Arthurian Legends‘ approach to melee is decidedly more 90’s, harkening back to the fast-paced action of Witchhaven and Hexen.

Sword, shield, axe, and mace. Holy grenade and throwing dagger. Arthurian Legends provides you with a weath of weapons to slay the forces of evil, leaving blood and guts in your wake. Split into themed chapters akin to Doom or the recent Dusk, you might fight across the kingdom of Albion: forest and swamp, castles where Saxons and evil mages lurk, the caves and cemeteries that undead and skeletons await in the shadows.

Alongside your weapons, Arthurian Legends lets you control the hordes of enemies with magicial power-ups that can freeze foes or unleash lightning storms, as well as special relics to collect and secret areas with hidden items to find.

Arthurian Legends is currently in development, with a demo expected in the future. You can learn more about the game and developer through its site and Twitter page.

2018 Infiniti QX80 First Drive: Fresh Design on an Old-School SUV https://briefnews.eu/2018-infiniti-qx80-first-drive-fresh-design-on-an-old-school-suv/ https://briefnews.eu/2018-infiniti-qx80-first-drive-fresh-design-on-an-old-school-suv/#respond Thu, 21 Dec 2017 05:20:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2018-infiniti-qx80-first-drive-fresh-design-on-an-old-school-suv/ 2018-Infiniti-QX80-Placement

Infiniti launched the QX80’s predecessor, the QX56, when environmentalists were torching Hummers and energy experts claimed peak oil would dry out the world’s reserves within decades. During the 2004 model year, its first, gas prices crested at more than $ 2 per gallon, prompting more predictions that big SUVs would soon be extinct. Exactly none of that happened. Since Infiniti renamed the second-generation QX56 as the QX80 for 2014 (and then refreshed it for 2015), sales of luxury SUVs and crossovers have been on fire. For 2018, Infiniti has updated the QX80 a second time. After driving it in Charleston, South Carolina, we’d suggest—no surprise, given its age—that it may still need a few more tweaks. READ MORE ››
