Netflix wants more Panama Papers-related projects in their line-up. They already have one film in the works about that subject, and now it looks like they’re circling Steven Soderbergh‘s Panama Papers movie The Laundromat. Plus: Meryl Streep has joined the cast, and Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas are both in talks to star.
We’ve already reported on Steven Soderbergh’s Panama Papers movie The Laundromat. The film will focus on “the largest leak of corporate data in history, when 11.5 million documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonesca were revealed back in 2015 and detailed the various legal and illegal ways powerful people and corporations hide their money in offshore accounts.” Soderbergh’s take is going to be based on author Jake Bernstein‘s book Secrecy World, which examines “the web of money laundering and other criminal activity revealed in the data leak.” Now we have some updates.
First up: The Hollywood Reporter reveals that a relatively unknown actress named Meryl Streep will star in Soderbergh’s film. Per THR, “Streep’s character details are being kept in the secret [sic] but sources describe it as being the emotional throughline of the movie.”
And that’s not all. Deadline reports that Antonio Banderas and recent Oscar winner Gary Oldman are both circling the project. There’s no word on who Oldman or Banderas might be playing, but they’re both interesting, talented actors who will each bring their own unique gifts to the film. Banderas has worked with Soderbergh before, in the film Haywire.
In addition to this potential casting news, Deadline also reveals that Netlfix has shown interest in acquiring the project. If they do, this will be the second Panama Papers drama from the streaming service. In 2016, Netflix announced plans to make a Panama Papers movie produced by ER and Shameless producer John Wells. Here’s info about that film:
Netflix and John Wells Productions (Burnt, August Osage County, Love and Mercy) are teaming up to tell the definitive story behind The Panama Papers and the two journalists who, working through an anonymous source known as John Doe, cracked open an unprecedented torrent of lies, diversions and information that revealed how the wealthy hid billions of dollars offshore through a little known law firm in Panama. The work, released in collaboration with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), set off an international firestorm, triggering the resignation of heads of state, judicial investigations in over a dozen countries and a global debate on just how easy it has become for the wealthy to avoid taxes, game the system and evade the law.
Netflix has acquired exclusive rights to Panama Papers: Breaking the Story of How the World’s Rich and Powerful Hide Their Money, a recently released book by Obermaier and Obermayer and will work with producers Wells and Claire Rudnick Polstein and executive producer Zach Studin of John Wells Productions to bring to life the dramatic story in a feature film. Marina Walker, ICIJ deputy director, and Gerard Ryle, who leads the ICIJ’s headquarters staff in Washington D.C., and oversaw the more than 400 journalists in 76 countries on the Panama Papers, are also on-board to collaborate on the film.
Just why Netflix would want two dramas about the same subject is a bit of a puzzler, but I’m sure they have their reasons. Of these two projects, the Soderbergh project is the film I’m most interested in, simply because I love Soderbergh’s work and I’m thrilled that he’s releasing so many new movies now after his brief retirement. Also: the thought of Meryl Streep working with Steven Soderbergh is really cool.

The entertainment reporter could be seen patiently waiting to speak to the Academy Award winner during the ITV breakfast show.
But when he was finally given a chance to speak to Gary, he was rudely interrupted by another reporter.
Good Morning Britain hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid could be heard shouting encouragement to Ross as he tried to get the actor’s attention on the red carpet.
After a short while, Gary finally agreed to speak to Ross and apologised for being “busy earlier”.
“How did it go?” Ross asked.
Flashing a huge grin at the camera and holding up his Oscar, Gary replied: “It went very well.”
The 59-year-old dedicated his award to his mother during the star-studded ceremony and told her to put the kettle on.
However, before Ross had a chance to ask about his dedication, another reporter rudely interrupted their chat.
The journalist could be seen pushing her microphone in Gary’s face as she asked: “Have you spoken to your mum?”
“I haven’t spoken to my mum,” Gary replied looking a little shocked.
“I’ll see her in the morning and we’ll have a natter.”
Fortunately, Ross managed to gain control of the situation and went on to ask Gary to introduce the adverts.
The actor was more than happy to oblige as he turned to the camera and said: “We’ll back after these messages.”
Following the interview, viewers were quick to comment on the moment on Twitter, with on noting: “OMG how rude and unprofessional was that reporter trying to get onto Ross’ interview with Gary Oldman. I wouldn’t have kept my calm & would have elbowed her out the way #gmb #Oscars.”
Another continued: “Who is that blonde women trying to muscle in on #rossking interviewing Gary Oldman on #GMB @GMB does she not know the rules of waiting on the red carpet.”
It came after Frances McDormand, who won the award for Best Actress, could be seen walking straight past the reporter earlier in the evening.
Ross could be heard calling after the actress as she swiftly made her way into the venue.
He did however, manage to speak to former Hollyoaks actress Rachel Shenton about her win for short film, The Silent Child.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
Rather than the Darkest Hour, the new movie is already looking like it will be the British star’s own finest hour.
After years of awards snubs and disappointments, it looks almost certain that the Academy will follow the BAFTAs and give Oldman his first Best Actor Oscar this Sunday.
Unsurprisingly, the actor himself may not be ready to say farewell to Winston Churchill.
In a new interview he reveals the idea for a sequel set at the 1945 Yalta Conference after World War 2 and givng the tantalising possibility that his towering performance could be matched by new on screen incarnations of the equally iconic US and Russian leaders.
In the latest Hollywood Reporter interview, Oldman explained how close he came to not accepting the role at all.
He said: “Racked with insecurity. I turned down Churchill many times. And didn’t want to do it. Didn’t want to go near it. And, ultimately, I think it was fear. And you’re walking in the shadow of [others].”
After it resulted in the greatest accolades of his acreer, he happily discusses where the story could go next: “At the end of the war, there’s the summit with Stalin… And so that is another. Yeah, you know, we might. And we’d get someone. Roosevelt’s a great character, he’s on his way out there isn’t he? Yeah, so maybe. But I need a break from the makeup chair.”
Of course, it’s not just the incredible make-up that transformed Oldman into the iconic war leader. The actor revealed just how much he put into the role, someting he fears younger generations might not understand.
He said: “What you see in Darkest Hour – there’s facility and talent and intuition and things that are at work there. But what you are really looking at is hard homework, hard work. And that is sitting at my kitchen table, pounding those lines in. You are playing someone whose brain is moving is that thing again, a running condition, that inner motor that Churchill had, dynamic, a brain, people not being able to catch up with him. You can’t be searching for those words, searching for the text. You’ve got to know it to a point. I knew when I got to rehearsal for Darkest Hour, I was off the book. Like a play. I knew it like a play. And then it’s in you. And it’s got to be in your blood stream. And that is homework.”
Oldman added: “So there’s things — you can’t teach intuition, you can hone it, you can sharpen it, but you can’t give that to someone. There’s things that you can’t teach. But there are many things that you can. And I see this with my own kids, the younger generation. They want to find it all in five minutes. And the trick is to put the work in. It’s like a dancer: you’re not supposed to see the hard work.”
The 59-year-old actor looks almost certain to win the Best Actor Oscar at the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday evening.
Oldman portrayed Sir Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, garnering large critical acclaim for his performance.
Covering just a few weeks in 1940, there is still much of the World War II primer minister’s life that could be explored and Oldman is certainly open to at least two other projects.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor is adapting a short story by Churchill – based on a dream he had – into a play and is interested in a film sequel to Darkest Hour, set in 1945 at the end of the war.
On the play, Oldman said: “It’s [about] the ghost of his father, Randolph, who visits him in his studio at Chartwell [Churchill’s country residence].
“It’s two people, not an expensive thing to do. It might be something I’ll try and get on its feet.
“I long to go back [to the stage]. It’ll be quite terrifying, I’m sure, after 20 years.”
On a follow-up to Darkest Hour, the actor continued: “There could be [a sequel] because at the end of the war, there’s the summit with Stalin and [Roosevelt].”
He added: “Roosevelt’s a great character; he’s on his way out. So maybe.
“[But] I need a break from the makeup chair.”
The World War II prime minister is one of the most portrayed historical figures on Film and TV, and the latest release already looks bound for Oscars glory.
There’s been something of resurgence of portrayals in the last couple of years with Brian Cox’s Churchill covering D-Day doubts, Michael Gambon in TV film Churchill’s Secret on his covered-up stroke, and John Lithgow in The Crown showing his later years as Prime Minister.
Now comes Darkest Hour, set in the crucial period of May 1940 when Britain was on the back foot against Nazi Germany and Churchill stepped up to lead the country, fighting against calls for peace with the enemy. Iconic actor Gary Oldman stars, fat-suited up, in a role that looks set to finally win him the Best Actor Oscar in March – following last week’s Golden Globes’ victory.
But what did Churchill’s family, those who knew him personally and intimately, make of Darkest Hour and how accurate was Oldman’s performance? Speaking exclusively with Express.co.uk, Sir Winston’s grandson, Sir Nicholas, has given his verdict on the actor and the film as a whole.
The Tory grandee, who has been an MP since 1983, was 15-years-old when his grandfather died and walked behind his coffin at the 1965 state funeral.
Having many fond memories of Churchill and his wife Clementine, Sir Nicholas knows an accurate portrayal of his grandfather when he sees one.
Speaking with Express.co.uk in his Portcullis House office, complete with Churchill bust in front of his desk, the 69-year-old gave a large seal of approval for Darkest Hour.
Sir Nicholas boomed: “I thought it was excellent, and not only because of the brilliance of the acting and direction. You look at Gary Oldman, before and after – what they achieved with creating my grandfather’s persona is exceptional.
“There have been brilliant Churchill actors before, like Robert Hardy and there have been some absolute snorkers – but I think Gary Oldman has absolutely nailed it. They each have their own way of doing it, but his portrayal of my grandfather is very vivid. One of the very best.
“Y’know I wasn’t old enough [to know Churchill then]. I didn’t live through the war so I don’t know what he was like then. But certainly he and Kristen Scott Thomas who played my grandmother Clementine were brilliant. I knew her [Clemmie] very well. If you close your eyes it is my grandma.”
Sir Nicholas’ praise didn’t stop at the performances, as he went into detail of how Darkest Hour is more than just another Churchill movie.
He continued: “I loved the little side sketches that showed tremendous things about my grandfather’s humanity and the section where his brother was at Dunkirk – all that is just so beautifully done.
“Not only is it an astonishing piece of filmmaking – very pacy, wonderful to watch – but also it’s a kind of allegory for what people miss about the world. I think it’s more than just a brilliant film, because it’s got a lesson for us all, which is: ‘Cometh the hour, cometh the man.’
“I think people today think we’re in a very precarious place, not sure about the direction of the country – very uncertain. But can you imagine what it must have been like, to live in London in 1940? It puts our rather sad politics into some sort of proportion.”
Other moments that stood out for Sir Nicholas were the Underground scene where Churchill asks regular people what they think the government should be doing in regards to Nazi Germany.
He added: “There’s a scene on the Underground, which is an allegory – because the idea of my grandfather on the Underground is absolutely preposterous.
“He’d never been on a bus in his life, but he certainly understood what people were thinking on the bus and Underground.
“And I love that crescendo in the House of Commons [during the Finest Hour speech], the whole thing is so well done.”
Darkest Hour is released in UK cinemas today.
The 59-year-old actor looks set for Oscars glory after picking up Best Actor in the Drama category at last night’s Golden Globes.
Upon winning for his performance as Churchill in Darkest Hour, Oldman told the audience: “I feel very humbled and surprised to have been asked to this stage.”
However his words were a far cry from his comments on the Golden Globes just a couple of years ago.
Speaking with Playboy magazine in 2014, the actor said: ““[It is] a meaningless event.”
Oldman continued: “The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is kidding you that something’s happening. They’re f**king ridiculous.
“There’s nothing going on at all. It’s 90 nobodies having a w**k.
“Everybody’s getting drunk, and everybody’s sucking up to everybody. Boycott the f**king thing.”
The actor stars as Churchill in Darkest Hour, which focuses on the first few weeks of his time as Prime Minister during World War II.

While Oldman is considered by many movie fans to be one of the greatest actors of his generation, he is yet to win an Oscar – something that might change at this year’s Academy Awards.
Darkest Hour is out in UK cinemas on Friday.
It’s been a surprisingly big year for Dunkirk. Earlier this year, Lone Scherfig’s Their Finest and Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk both told stories about the evacuation of British troops from the beach at Dunkirk during World War II. Now Joe Wright, who also chronicled the events of Dunkirk in Atonement, tells yet another version of this story with Darkest Hour.
Darkest Hour is the behind-the-scenes look at not so much the evacuation itself, but the events leading up the evacuation. The film’s main focus is British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Like Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, Darkest Hour isn’t so much a biopic of a famous politician but rather a week-in-the-life type tale. As the film opens, parliament has lost faith in Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain (Ronald Pickup) for underestimating the nazi threat.
Chamberlain is forced to resign, and the only man the parties seem to be willing to back is Churchill. But while he may have party support, Churchill will soon find his new position is even more challenging than he could’ve imagined.
Gary Oldman plays Churchill, and he is indeed as magnificent as you’ve likely already heard. This likely won’t come as much of a surprise, since Oldman is one of our great living actors, ut this may be his finest performance to date. Buried in makeup that’s never distracting, Oldman becomes Churchill. There’s plenty of opportunities here for the actor to go over-the-top, yet he finds just the right balance between Churchill’s fiery continence and his quiet self-doubt.
Darkest Hour runs the risk of falling into standard historical drama territory, but Wright and screenwriter Anthony McCarten work hard to avoid that stigma. McCarten’s script is so meticulously structured that it would’ve fit right in on the stage, but Wright avoids stuffy staging through his cinematic direction, pointing his camera into smoky chambers where powerful words echo off hallowed walls.
Chamberlain and Lord Halifax (Stephen Dillane) want Churchill to consider entering peace talks with Hitler before the Germans invade England. With France close to surrender and the British soldiers beaten back towards the sea at Dunkirk, things seem hopeless, and Chamberlain and Halifax are willing to hear Hitler’s terms. Churchill, in turn, wants none of it – he knows Hitler is a monster, and hearing Hitler out would be tantamount to surrender.
Darkest Hour brings us into Churchill’s world through his new secretary Elizabeth Nel, played by Lily James. On first introduction, Elizabeth seems like a character who will simply fade into the background and be mostly neglected the way Churchill’s wife (played by Kristin Scott Thomas) does. But Darkest Hour keeps Elizabeth in focus, and some of the best moments of the film are the quiet scenes that Churchill and Elizabeth share together.
When Darkest Hour began production, no one could’ve guessed how prescient the story would be. But scenes like the one where Churchill talks to passengers on the London Ground to get the mood of the country, where the crowd cries they refuse to give into fascists and would rather fight them off at every turn, come off as even more meaningful now in 2017 then they would have a year ago.
Overall though, the power in Darkest Hour rests on Gary Oldman and how he uses Churchill’s words. There’s plenty to dislike about Churchill’s politics, but the man was a great orator, and Darkest Hour stresses the power of Churchill’s words, and words in general, through several key moments. But anyone can go in front of a crowd and deliver words – it’s whether or not the speaker believes the words that gives them their power. Oldman understands that, and brings it to his performance.
Most of all though, Darkest Hour makes Churchill human. It removes him from the black and white photos of history and shows the conflicted man underneath. It may at times border on hagiography, yet it’s hard to deny the power on display here. Darkest Hour may not be one the best movies of 2017, but it is one of the most powerful. When Churchill cries “Never surrender!” during one of his final speeches, it’s a message worth embracing.
