Indian badminton stars Kidambi Srikanth and Ashwini Ponnappa donned makeup and prosthetics to look like an elderly couple.

While badminton is barely a blip on the sporting radar in Australia, in India, badminton is the countries second most played sport.

Imagine if Nick Kyrgios and Ash Barty came down to play some doubles at a local tennis school.

The 25-year-old Srikanth is a former world number one and ranked third in the world. He also won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast earlier this year.

Ponnappa is a 29-year-old women’s doubles player who has been to three Commonwealth Games, winning gold in Delhi 2010, silver at Glasgow 2014 and bronze on the Gold Coast.

The pair are big deals in India, especially in a badminton school.

Going into the school, they are given five minutes of playing time and look terrible on a service game.

Some young guns from the school have a turn and knock the ball over the net, only for the elderly couple to spring into life.

After the match, the children come over to shake their opponents hands, only for the superstars to rip off their prosthetics and send the crowd into hysterics.

The pair seemed to enjoy the prank and have both their older selves as their profile pictures.

They’re not the first to do a prank like this.

Back in 2015, Cristiano Ronaldo dressed up like a homeless man, complete with dirty clothes, shaggy hair and an untamed beard.

The Portuguese international then began playing with a soccer ball in the busy Plaza de Callao, but despite showing off his amazing skills, nobody picked up who he was.

When he got bored of playing by himself, he tried to involve the locals, but was ignored for the most part. He even tried to get the phone number of a passing girl but, unsurprisingly given his appearance, was shut down.

After almost an hour at the piazza, Ronaldo finally convinced a little boy to join him in a game of one-on-one. The boy seemed bemused when he asked him what his name was and signed the ball for him, before removing his fake hair and beard, revealing himself to the crowd who immediately surrounded the 30-year-old.

NBA star Kyrie Irving played a similar stunt in 2012 when, shooting a promotion for Pepsi disguised as an old man, he tricked everyone at a local basketball court into thinking he was a pathetic excuse for an athlete.

Only when he started draining three-pointers, dunking and schooling his opponents with some unbelievable tricks did some start to suspect something wasn’t as it seemed.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Even though it’s not really anything you haven’t seen before, Neeson’s commitment to the role and Collet-Serra’s at times inspired direction make for a movie that’s hell on wheels. Sure, you can see some of the twists coming from a mile away, but it’s a forgivable sin when they’re executed with so much panache.

For instance, we’ve all seen montages used to denote the passage of time, but not quite the way that Collet-Serra does to open the film. What he gives us is a sort of composite Groundhog Day, a single routine shown to us over the course of a seemingly endless number of days as it repeats over and over again, sunny on some occasions and cloudy on others, overlapping right up until Neeson finally gets onto his commuter train.

As Michael MacCauley, a former cop currently peddling insurance to provide for his wife and son, Neeson is unreasonably great. On paper, his character isn’t all that interesting, but the level of intensity and earnestness that Neeson brings to every role he’s ever taken raise MacCauley — and everything around him, as almost every cast member is a caricature — to another level. There’s Shazad Latif as the business bro, Andy Nyman as the chatty neighbor, Florence Pugh as the punk teen — everyone is playing a part in the most literal sense possible (and with the clunky dialogue to boot), but it comes together.

On his way home after being fired and thereby left in the lurch with a reverse-mortgage that’s been taken in order to pay for his son’s college tuition, MacCauley meets a woman (Vera Farmiga) who poses a hypothetical scenario. There’s a passenger on this train that doesn’t belong. If he can figure out who that passenger is before the end of the line, he’ll receive $ 100,000 in cash. Obviously this isn’t actually a hypothetical — if he doesn’t mark the passenger with a tracker (that will then signal someone else on board to kill them), then his family will be killed. And just in case he starts getting cocky, they kill off the very first passenger he enlists to help him.

As indicated by the reason behind MacCauley’s desperation, there’s a little class commentary at work in The Commuter. It never quite manages to coalesce — none of the overt morals of the film do — in part because the movie is ultimately so singularly about Neeson kicking ass and taking names (and briefly being schooled on the Brontë sisters by an understated Jonathan Banks) that there’s no space for anything else. And that’s just fine.

Or close to it, anyway. For the most part, the film zips along, but there’s an entire act at the end that could probably have been chopped off or otherwise condensed, with the lean, mean fun of the bulk of the film suddenly bloating into the grim, explosive theatrics that tend to dominate so many blockbusters these days. It’s an unnecessary spectacle, as is only proven by how much more hair-raising the first half of the film is when it’s just Liam Neeson in, on, and around a train, utilizing everything he can in order to stay alive. The shot in which Collet-Serra pulls back from Neeson’s shocked face and then back through the entire train is more thrilling than any of the fireworks that end the movie.

At its heart, The Commuter is very much a how movie rather than a why movie. Yes, there’s a why to be sussed out – why MacCauley, why this passenger, etc. — but it’s not like any character played by Liam Neeson is ever going to completely turn his back on being moral. So, while it’s fun trying to piece together what’s going on, it’s the how that really makes or breaks the movie, and boy, does it make it. How is he going to get back on a moving train after falling out of the bottom of it? How is he going to survive bringing an electric guitar to a knife fight?

The supporting cast is stacked enough that it’s a bit of a pity to see them turn into grist on the Neeson mill (Elizabeth McGovern plays MacCauley’s wife and appears in maybe a minute of the film), but that’s to be expected. This is a film built on a particular formula, after all. And it’s a formula that works. This is now the fourth time that Neeson and Collet-Serra have worked together, with Unknown (2011), Non-Stop (2014), and Run All Night (2015) already under their belts, and as previously mentioned, they’ve boiled this down to such an art that it’s fun to imagine what might come next. Planes, check; trains, check; there are only so many more places to go that are quite so contained as environments for a man to suffer a crisis of conscience, but it’s hard not to hope that the options will be limitless. A boat seems like the obvious next choice. Then a stretch limo, maybe?

Strictly Come Dancing 2017: Ruth Langsford branded an ‘old slapper’ after shock show move https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2017-ruth-langsford-branded-an-old-slapper-after-shock-show-move/ https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2017-ruth-langsford-branded-an-old-slapper-after-shock-show-move/#respond Mon, 06 Nov 2017 13:44:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2017-ruth-langsford-branded-an-old-slapper-after-shock-show-move/

The This Morning favourite was made to discuss the moment she straddled her dance partner while hosting the ITV show with Coleen Nolan, Jane Moore and Saira Khan.

The clip of the pair’s gaffe was shown several times with the 57-year-old pointing out it was not planned to win votes.

Ruth claimed she was attempting to stay in character after Anton, 51, slipped up and tried to defer attention away from his error by getting on top of him.

“I know you want to ignore it,” Coleen, 52, started. “I know you want to forget it Ruth, but this was the moment of the weekend. I mean… I know, 100 per cent fact, it was so totally unintentional.”

As a clip of her spouse Eamonn Holmes flashed up from Saturday night, the presenter replied: “Look at my husband!

“It’s that live TV moment, I would never have planned to do that but he literally lost his balance. I’m supposed to be the cape [and he was meant to] woosh me over his leg…”

After Coleen begged to see it the video again, Ruth continued: “Stop! Oh dear… Basically, I’m still the cape, so I thought I’d throw myself over him and cover up his embarrassment.

However, her companion was having none of it and joked: “Shut up! Basically you’re an old slapper, who wanted to get there right at the end… This is the real you!”

Ruth, who found herself at the bottom of the leaderboard, added: “I was disappointed because I thought we’d done a fairly passable Paso, up until that point.”

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV, while Strictly Come Dancing 2017 continues Saturday at 6.45pm on BBC One.

‘You try going to space on your iPhone’: Russian embassy hits back at Soyuz ‘old tech’ jibe https://briefnews.eu/you-try-going-to-space-on-your-iphone-russian-embassy-hits-back-at-soyuz-old-tech-jibe/ https://briefnews.eu/you-try-going-to-space-on-your-iphone-russian-embassy-hits-back-at-soyuz-old-tech-jibe/#respond Sun, 08 Oct 2017 20:54:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/you-try-going-to-space-on-your-iphone-russian-embassy-hits-back-at-soyuz-old-tech-jibe/

The Russian Embassy in the UK has issued a tongue-in-cheek challenge to a British journalist who said that Russian spacecraft were still operating with Soviet technology less powerful than an Apple smartphone.

“Almost nothing the Russians use to go into orbit has changed since the collapse of communism. They have updated the computers on their best rocket, the Soyuz, but it still has less computing power than an iPhone,” journalist Giles Whittell wrote in his Sunday Times profile of Tim Peake, Britain’s first spacewalker, emphasizing the dangers he faced during his ascent to the International Space Station.

“Perhaps Giles Whittell should then try to fly into space using his iPhone, not an ‘outdated’ Soyuz,” fired back the embassy’s Twitter account.

The Soyuz TMA-19M spacecraft carrying the crew of Timothy Peake of Britain, Yuri Malenchenko of Russia and Timothy Kopra of the U.S. blasts off to the International Space Station (ISS) from the launchpad at the Baikonur cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, December 15, 2015 © Shamil Zhumatov

Curiously, in the article, Whittell says that Tim Peake himself, who flew on the Soyuz in 2015, “is a fan of Baikonur [cosmodrone], or at least of the Soviet technology it represents.”

“They overengineer everything, and the Soyuz is the same. It’s like a tank. It’s by far the safest and most reliable means of getting to space,” Peake said.

Over its history, the Soyuz rocket has been launched into space over 1,500 times, with a success rate of 97 percent. The attached Soyuz capsule that carries the crew has never failed to deliver its astronauts to the International Space Station, where it has been the only means of ferrying crews to and fro since the retirement of the Space Shuttle in 2011.

While the Soyuz shuttle is actually in its fourth iteration, it deliberately maintains the same fundamental design, as during its first launch in 1966, due to its track record of reliability, simplicity and good value. So even if it uses computers with less power than an iPhone, it is not because Russian engineers cannot put an iPhone inside the Soyuz, and make it run the launch software.

Strictly Come Dancing 2017 line-up: Ruth Langsford branded ‘too old’ in shock outburst https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2017-line-up-ruth-langsford-branded-too-old-in-shock-outburst/ https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2017-line-up-ruth-langsford-branded-too-old-in-shock-outburst/#respond Wed, 09 Aug 2017 11:05:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2017-line-up-ruth-langsford-branded-too-old-in-shock-outburst/

The third celebrity to join the Strictly Come Dancing bill will be announced during today’s programme, with all the fingers pointing towards Ruth Langsford.

“It could be anybody,” gasped Eamonn. “Has anyone spotted Phillip Schofield in a dance hall somewhere in sequins?”

“He’s not here,” smirked Ruth.

Naturally, speculation was rife among This Morning viewers on Twitter, with Rylan Clark-Neal and Gino D’Campo among the frontrunners with fans.

Though, poor Eamonn was left reeling after Ruth revealed that not one viewer tipped him for a stint on the dance floor.

“You know the vast majority of people want me to do it,” he grinned.

Ruth shut him down: “There’s not one.”

Pleading with viewers, Eamonn shrieked: “If you’re worried about the hips, don’t. They’re fully lubricated, ready to go.”

Later, Eamonn ribbed: “In fairness, with Strictly, you’re too old, in fairness.”

Eamonn’s let down comes after he appeared to confirm Ruth has signed up for Strictly earlier today in very telling tweet.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am on ITV, while Strictly Come Dancing is expected to BBC One return this Autumn.

Netflix’s new hit show is a triumph of ‘New Hollywood’ over ‘Old Hollywood,’ says showrunner https://briefnews.eu/netflixs-new-hit-show-is-a-triumph-of-new-hollywood-over-old-hollywood-says-showrunner/ https://briefnews.eu/netflixs-new-hit-show-is-a-triumph-of-new-hollywood-over-old-hollywood-says-showrunner/#respond Tue, 18 Jul 2017 15:28:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/netflixs-new-hit-show-is-a-triumph-of-new-hollywood-over-old-hollywood-says-showrunner/ “Super Mario Bros.” is one of the most popular video game franchises of all time. Little Super Mario sits alongside Mickey Mouse and Ronald McDonald as one of the modern world’s most recognizable characters.

And yet, even with something as popular and straightforward as “Super Mario Bros.”, the Hollywood movie industry adapted it into something hilariously bad.

Super Mario Bros. (movie)Lightmotive

This is the norm for video game adaptations taken on by Hollywood, whether it’s a TV show or a film — few expect their favorite game to get turned into a good movie or show.

The recently released “Castlevania” on Netflix, an animated show centered on the “Castlevania” video game series, is an incredible exception. It’s smart, funny, and manages to turn a largely uninteresting game series (story-wise) into a compelling narrative.

We caught up with “Castlevania” showrunner Adi Shankar over the phone last week to ask how he and his team managed to pull off what so many others in Hollywood could not. Shankar said the reason so many video game adaptations are terrible is because of the approach taken by Hollywood: Rather than diving in on what makes the game’s world interesting to the people who already love it, adaptations tend to broaden the scope too far in an attempt to draw in a larger audience.

“Let’s say the game sold 5 million copies, right? [The studios] look at it as, ‘Those are 5 million people who are gonna show up on opening weekend anyways. So let’s get more people to show up,'” Shankar said. “But what they didn’t get is no, no, no, no, no — that’s like your marketing department. Those 5 million people? If you love something, you want everyone else to love it. You want to share that fandom with other people.”

Castlevania (Netflix)Netflix

To Shankar, “Old Hollywood” is represented by that old approach: Take a property that people already love, and broaden it instead of appealing to its core. And it’s “New Hollywood” that gave him the chance to make “Castlevania.”

“I was done,” Shankar said. He’d made a handful of successful but — by their very nature — unprofitable films on YouTube. He made what are essentially fan films that he dubbed his “Bootleg Universe”: short films based on stuff like “Power Rangers” and “The Punisher.” Since they’re properties owned by major corporations, he was unable to profit from the films (lest he get sued).

“After that came out, ‘Old Hollywood’ was kind of like, ‘What is this guy smoking? What is wrong with this dude?’,” Shankar said. “But then I guess ‘New Hollywood’ — the internet crowd — embraced me as one of their own at that point. Maker Studios gave me a three-picture deal. And there’s a bunch of stuff that happened behind the scenes that wasn’t even public knowledge. I was in kind of a weird spot because I wanted to leave, and I was like I’ll try out this whole ‘Hollywood Career version 2.0’ for me.”

With one foot out the door, Hollywood pulled Shankar back in.

Castlevania (Netflix)Netflix

“I shut down all the infrastructure I’d set up. I applied to graduate school. And then different brands just started hitting me up. It was kinda weird,” he said. “Those same corporations that I was like ‘Ugh, go away!’ — they were calling me. There were rumors of maybe he’ll direct this movie, maybe he’ll produce that thing. And I’m like, ‘What is going on? I’m literally out the door.'”

It was around then that, through a chance encounter, Shankar learned of an opportunity to lead production on a show based on “Castlevania,” a classic video game franchise close to Shankar’s heart. He jumped at it, and the show we have now is the result of that chance encounter.

But Shankar sees his role in Hollywood as similar to that of Joss Whedon (who directed “The Avengers”), James Gunn (who directed “Guardians of the Galaxy”) and Jon Favreau (who directed “Iron Man”), only with video games as the medium being adapted rather than comic books.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 DisneyDisney

Here’s Shankar:

“The way I see it is comic book adaptations were really bad for a very long time. And really what it took was a bunch of kids who loved comic books growing up, who were then pissed off at how bad the comic books movies were, to be like, ‘I’m gonna change that.’ Right? They went out and made ‘Iron Man.’ They went out and made ‘The Avengers.’ They went out and made all these now-great comic book adaptations.”

And he’s not wrong. Before comic book movies took over as the modern blockbuster, there were dozens of whiffs. Do yourself a favor and don’t watch “Batman Forever,” for instance. It took decades of misses before Hollywood figured out how to consistently make hit films out of comic books. And even then, it wasn’t a measure of the film industry figuring out how to do it — they simply handed the keys to directors who grew up with comics, who love those comics.

Shankar put it as such: “It’s on our generation to fix this problem.” His next project, unsurprisingly, is another video game adaptation: “Assassin’s Creed.”
