  • The College Football Playoff committee released its final ranking before the playoff teams will be announced on Sunday.
  • The big winner was Oklahoma, who is ranked fifth, ahead of Ohio State and in position to move into the top four if Georgia loses to Alabama, as expected.
  • In all, eight teams are still alive for a spot in the playoff, including Michigan and UCF.

The penultimate College Football Playoff ranking is out and the Oklahoma Sooners are the big winners.

With one week to go before the committee chooses the four teams for the playoff, Oklahoma moved up to the all-important fifth spot over Ohio State. The Sooners are still not guaranteed a spot in the playoff with a win in the Big 12 championship game, but if it were to come down to OU and Ohio State, the Sooners would have the edge.

In all, eight teams still have a path to the playoff. Below, we ranked the remaining contenders based on who has the best chances to make the playoff.

8. UCF

Julio Aguilar/Getty Images

Record: 11-0

Last week’s result: Beat USF, 38-10

Playoff ranking: 8

Key games remaining: Unranked Memphis in The Atlantic championship game.

One thing to know: It is clear the committee does not take UCF’s undefeated record seriously. Michigan is still ahead of the Knights and is done with its schedule. UCF adding a win over Memphis is unlikely to impress the committee enough to jump the Wolverines. That means UCF needs at least three teams ahead of them to lose. And then there is the season-ending injury to quarterback McKenzie Milton. It is just another excuse for the committee to leave UCF out if they want one.

7. Michigan

Jay LaPrete/AP

Record: 10-2

Last week’s result: Lost to Ohio State, 62-39

Playoff ranking: 7

Key games remaining: none

One thing to know: Michigan is the big surprise this week as they still have a path to the playoff despite an ugly loss to Ohio State. The Wolverines’ best hope is for Clemson, Oklahoma, and Ohio State to lose their conference title games. There would then be a chaos debate over the fourth spot with 1-loss Clemson, 2-loss Ohio State, 2-loss Michigan, and undefeated UCF all with a strong argument to join Alabama, Notre Dame, and Georgia. But would the committee take Michigan over Ohio State despite the head-to-head result? Michigan would have “stronger” losses.

6. Ohio State

Jay LaPrete/AP

Record: 11-1

Last week’s result: Beat Michigan, 62-39

Playoff ranking: 6

Key games remaining: No. 21 Northwestern in the Big Ten title game.

One thing to know: Ohio State needs a lot of help. An Oklahoma loss in the Big 12 title game would be the biggest boost. But that might not be enough if Clemson and Georgia win or if the Bulldogs play a close game with Alabama.

Striking Oklahoma teachers storm & occupy state capitol over pay and funding (PHOTOS, VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/striking-oklahoma-teachers-storm-occupy-state-capitol-over-pay-and-funding-photos-video/ https://briefnews.eu/striking-oklahoma-teachers-storm-occupy-state-capitol-over-pay-and-funding-photos-video/#respond Wed, 04 Apr 2018 02:20:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/striking-oklahoma-teachers-storm-occupy-state-capitol-over-pay-and-funding-photos-video/

Thousands of Oklahoma teachers stormed the state capitol and refused to budge when confronted by authorities about their loud chants. The protest appears to be part of a statewide strike over teacher pay and school funding.

Over 30,000 teachers walked out of schools across Oklahoma on Monday and Tuesday, protesting what they say are teacher shortages, low salaries and under-resourced public schools.

Teachers at the rally on Tuesday held signs proclaiming “Let’s Start Funding” and “Fund our Future.”

Republican Governor Mary Fallin agreed last week to give teachers an average raise of $ 6,000 per year, or 16 percent. But this has done little to quell the discontent of teachers in the solid-red state. The teachers unions are demanding $ 10,000 a-year per teacher, higher pay for support staff and $ 200 million in education funding over the next three years.

Oklahoma teacher salaries are among the lowest in the country,  ranking at 49th, according to the National Education Association.

“If I didn’t have a second job, I’d be on food stamps,” Rae Lovelace, a third-grade teacher and single mother in northwest Oklahoma, told USA Today.

In a statement released on Monday, Governor Fallin defended her offer to teachers, which she described as “the largest teacher pay raise in state history”. She added that Oklahoma is “only able to do what our budget allows”.

Recent teacher strikes have affected only Republican-controlled states thus far. Public education unions are traditionally a bastion of the Democratic party.

Oklahoma City Public Schools announced that schools will remain shut on Wednesday as protests and negotiations with legislators carry on.

The protests in Oklahoma come as Kentucky teachers also staged mass walkouts over a pensions dispute. Teachers in both states have been encouraged by the success of a nine-day teacher strike in West Virginia in March. Following the the state’s biggest teachers’ strike in 30 years, teachers and state employees won a five percent pay increase.

Oklahoma mother jailed for marrying her daughter 10 years after marrying her son https://briefnews.eu/oklahoma-mother-jailed-for-marrying-her-daughter-10-years-after-marrying-her-son/ https://briefnews.eu/oklahoma-mother-jailed-for-marrying-her-daughter-10-years-after-marrying-her-son/#respond Fri, 16 Mar 2018 00:46:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/oklahoma-mother-jailed-for-marrying-her-daughter-10-years-after-marrying-her-son/

An Oklahoma mother has been sentenced to two years in prison for marrying her daughter. Astonishingly, it is not the first time Patricia Ann Spann has tied the knot with of her children. She previously married her son in 2008.

Spann was convicted of incest on Tuesday. Once her two-year term is served, the 45-year-old mother will spend another eight years on probation, according to The Oklahoman newspaper. She will also have to register as a sex offender.

Patricia Spann had lost custody of her children years before being reunited with her daughter, Misty Velvet Dawn Spann, in 2014. Spann then said the pair “hit it off” and decided to get married. Some 17 months after same-sex marriage was legalized in Oklahoma, the couple were hitched in March 2016. However, the union was annulled in October of that year after the marriage was discovered by the Department of Human Services.

Misty Spann claimed that her mother said she had “consulted with three separate attorneys who advised there would be no problems with the marriage.” Upon annulling the marriage, the judge concluded that Patricia had induced her daughter to enter the marriage “by fraud.”

Despite being Misty’s biological mother, Patricia told investigators that she believed the marriage to be legal because her name no longer appeared on her daughters birth certificate.

Over the course of the investigation, police discovered that Patricia Spann had married her then-18-year-old son 10 years ago. That marriage was annulled two years later, at the son’s behest, however, no charges resulted from the incident.

Mysterious loud boom shakes Oklahoma, locals report green and orange flashes https://briefnews.eu/mysterious-loud-boom-shakes-oklahoma-locals-report-green-and-orange-flashes/ https://briefnews.eu/mysterious-loud-boom-shakes-oklahoma-locals-report-green-and-orange-flashes/#respond Wed, 14 Mar 2018 05:00:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mysterious-loud-boom-shakes-oklahoma-locals-report-green-and-orange-flashes/

Residents across Oklahoma and Texas were jostled from their daily routines after hearing a loud boom Tuesday afternoon. Many were left scratching their heads and watching the skies for the source of the explosive phenomenon.

While the US Geological Survey has not reported any earthquakes in the region, the National Weather Services in Norman, Oklahoma has said it is possible that the deafening boom was the result of “a ‘bolide’ or the breaking up of a meteor.”

A flurry of baffled residents shared their comments online, trying to make sense of the afternoon shocker. One nearby resident offered his account of the mysterious heavenly “green light” he spotted that afternoon.

“Meteor flew over Oklahoma City today at about 16:20, with a sonic boom and some shaking in nearby Norman! Was beautiful green and orange streak in the daylight,” he tweeted.

Chief Meteorologist for KFOR-TV OKC Mike Morgan was completely befuddled by the extraterrestrial visitor and asked others to clarify.

One resident’s speculation revolved around reports that China’s first space observation station was due to fall into Earth’s orbit at any moment.

“I was wondering if the meteor reports in North Texas and Oklahoma were actually Tiangong-1, but it looks like we’re still a week or so from that possibly happening,” he said.

Oklahoma is no stranger to unexplained booms, which have been attributed to an assortment of different causes. Last year, Midwest City residents were perplexed by large underground booms comparable to underground explosions, one witness stated.

“It turns out, this is a really neat deal. It has to do with water underground,” said Meteorologist John Slater. “With these cold fronts coming through, the water just freezes rapidly. And as it turns out, when it freezes, it expands.”

On January 25, 2014, News On 6 speculated that F-16 fighter jets from the 138th Fighter Wing division in Tulsa peppered the area with sonic booms powerful enough to rattle furniture and windows. However, the cause of the disturbances still remains a mystery.

Another shockwave dubbed the “Bama Boom” was felt across cities in Alabama on November 14, 2017. No explanation was offered other than either a hypersonic aircraft or meteorite shower.

Were they underground nuclear tests? Fracking adventures in the Midwest? No one will ever know.

Thunder vs Rockets LIVE stream: How to watch Oklahoma City against Houston online or on TV https://briefnews.eu/thunder-vs-rockets-live-stream-how-to-watch-oklahoma-city-against-houston-online-or-on-tv/ https://briefnews.eu/thunder-vs-rockets-live-stream-how-to-watch-oklahoma-city-against-houston-online-or-on-tv/#respond Wed, 07 Mar 2018 02:59:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/thunder-vs-rockets-live-stream-how-to-watch-oklahoma-city-against-houston-online-or-on-tv/

Prior to the season, the Rockets and Thunder were both seen as legitimate contenders to challenge the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference.

Oklahoma City had acquired All-Stars Paul George and Carmelo Anthony while Houston had paired James Harden with Chris Paul.

The latter have certainly played their part while the Thunder have struggled to make their All-Star line-up work at times.

Russell Westbrook continues to be the heartbeat of Oklahoma City but he has had to share the responsibility with George and Anthony which has worked brilliantly on occasions but equally frustrated fans.

Andre Roberson’s injury has clearly had a huge effect on their defensive unit and as a result they only have a 1.5 game cushion in the playoff places.

For Houston though they have gone from strength to strength throughout the season and are on a 15-game win streak, including an impressive 123-120 victory over the Boston Celtics last time out.

Oklahoma City beat Houston earlier in the season after stealing a lead in the fourth quarter and it is expected to be a close game once again.

5 missing after gas well explosion in Oklahoma https://briefnews.eu/5-missing-after-gas-well-explosion-in-oklahoma/ https://briefnews.eu/5-missing-after-gas-well-explosion-in-oklahoma/#respond Tue, 23 Jan 2018 02:23:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/5-missing-after-gas-well-explosion-in-oklahoma/ Five oil rig workers in Oklahoma are missing following an explosion at a gas well. The fire reached “everything” on location at the well situated about 100 miles southeast of the city of Tulsa.

As of 3:30pm, secondary fires that started after the explosion have been extinguished, but the head of a collapsed derrick, a type of crane with a moveable pivoted arm for lifting or moving heavy weights, was still burning.

Authorities searched a wooded area around the well for the missing people, but have yet to find them. Seventeen others were rescued.

After the explosion, which was reported a little before 9:00am Monday, one person was taken to to be treated at a burn unit, according to Pittsburg County Emergency Management Director Kevin Enloe, KOTV reported.

Around a dozen people were working on the site at the time of the explosion, which caused flames to shoot 50 feet in the air. The cause of the fire has not been determined, according to KOTV.

The exploded well is owned by Red Mountain Operating, and a Houston-based company called Patterson UTI was conducting the drilling, according to the company’s website, KOTV reported.

A fire control team from Houston arrived to shut down the well and put out the fire.

“They’re just checking everything, trying to get everything cooled down on location, but it’s still hot and there’s still a lot of gas coming out of the wellhead,” Enloe said.

Authorities stated that they do not expect to get into the wreckage Monday evening.

At a news conference earlier, officials said firefighters were not battling the initial blaze, but crews were set up around the area in order to fight any other fires that emerge due to the existing flames, KOTV reported.

Video taken by KOTV shows the heat from the explosion eventually caused the gas well’s derrick to collapse, which in turn, caused flames to spread across the site.

At least three medical helicopters landed at the site following the explosion, according to Enloe, KOTV reported.

Earlier Monday, before most of the fires were extinguished, Enloe said, “Everything that is on location is on fire,” and crews had to be pulled back after several explosions, CNN reported.

Can Small-Town Oklahoma Be Saved by its Immigrants? https://briefnews.eu/can-small-town-oklahoma-be-saved-by-its-immigrants/ https://briefnews.eu/can-small-town-oklahoma-be-saved-by-its-immigrants/#respond Mon, 04 Dec 2017 05:44:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/can-small-town-oklahoma-be-saved-by-its-immigrants/ When Soila Medina arrived in rural Texas County, Oklahoma, in the 1990s, the seventh-grader, daughter of two Mexican immigrants, looked around her classroom and saw hardly anybody who looked like her. That is no longer the case. The schools in Guymon, the county seat, are now 70 percent Hispanic and have expanded English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for their students, who at home speak some 27 different languages, from Armenian and Arabic to Burmese and Tagalog.

Mind you, this diversity isn’t in some urban center. Four and a half hours from the capital, Oklahoma City, the locals here have felt isolated for decades, often calling themselves the stepchildren of the Sooner State. However, the success of immigrants who have made the county their home since the ’90s has led to the revival of the community as a whole. Both the county unemployment rate and poverty rate were significantly lower than the state average at the height of the Great Recession in 2010, unlike the late ’90s, when 14.1 percent of the population was impoverished, hovering around the average in Oklahoma. As other rural small towns have hemorrhaged people and jobs, the population in Texas County surged by nearly a third from 1990 to 2015, now counting 21,489 residents, mostly led by the arrival of Latino families.

The same trend is spreading across the Midwest and South, where cities like Louisville, Nashville and Dayton have courted immigrants to combat losses from white flight.

That seismic cultural shift can be measured in other ways — say, the way Medina’s head turns on a constant swivel while pointing out the minority-owned businesses in Guymon. To the left, the first Hispanic-owned insurance company. To the right, Mora’s Market, which is growing so fast that it plans to add another building. A message in Spanish splashes across its white plaster wall: “Where your money turns into more,” Medina translates, roughly. There’s the downtown boutique, which sells dresses for quinceañeras in the evenings; here’s Pollo El Ranchero, known for the plaster chicken that greets families lunching after Sunday mass. A Filipino family owns the flower shop and the Mexican-Filipino fusion restaurant. One street boasts a Mexican bakery next to an Asian grocery, which is next to a Guatemalan market. Even the lone Wal-Mart has an entire section devoted to piñatas.

Guymon puts the lie to the notion that the needs of working-class Americans and newcomers must be at odds with each other. The minority boom in Texas County primarily came with the arrival in 1995 of the Seaboard Foods processing plant, the area’s largest employer. And in truth, the renaissance in this Oklahoma Panhandle community might not exist without its immigrant influx. The county added 1,400 Hispanic people from 2010 to 2013 alone, according to a census analysis by the Oklahoma Policy Institute, while the non-Hispanic population fell by 113. “It’s a preview of what is happening to the rest of Oklahoma,” says Gene Perry, the think tank’s policy director.

img 8474

The same trend is spreading across the Midwest and South, where cities like Louisville, Nashville and Dayton have courted immigrants to combat losses from white flight and the decline in manufacturing. “It’s a growing population, and it’s a largely citizen population, despite stereotypes,” Perry says. “They are going to be Oklahomans for the long-term, and we’re going to have to [invest] to make it a state … where they can be our future workforce, our future everything.”

img 8486

Among Guymon’s recent additions: a gleaming new city hall, a courthouse, an elementary school. The town is changing at breakneck speed, yet there’s no sign of alarm from white residents, who once were the majority. “It’s a trust thing. I have never heard any negative comments,” marvels Medina. “Not from the Chamber of Commerce or Main Street or the city.” Maybe those criticisms are found in the coffee shops, she suggests, where early rising retirees often gather to talk life and politics. “I wouldn’t know,” she says optimistically.

***

Every small town has “the coffee shop.” Here, it’s the Ambassador Inn, a budget hotel and restaurant owned by an Indian couple, where, on a recent Monday morning, a table of Guymon lifers gathered to grouse at each other good-humoredly. They are all white, all with ties to the local agriculture and oil industries.

Four-fifths of Texas County voters in 2016 backed Donald Trump and his immigration-limiting platform, and the Ambassador Inn’s coffee crowd at times reflected the president’s rhetoric. One retired construction worker worries about cultural assimilation and gang violence — however, he quickly adds that it’s more of a problem in “big cities,” like Oklahoma City. A former land surveyor says teachers can’t keep up with all the students who don’t speak English. But his conclusion is that of the rest of the table: Immigration has “helped the economy. Because this was one dead chicken before.” Adds 44-year-old Chad Rice, the only diner willing to have his name published: “It doesn’t have to do with race; it has to do with your values.” Here, they don’t find their neighbors’ values lacking, even if they worry in the abstract.

img 8503

That’s not to say rapid growth has come painlessly. The housing supply has struggled to keep up, and a 2014 study commissioned by the city showed a need for 119 new homes by 2018. Since then, a 30-home subdivision has been built, but those filled up “instantly.” “We’ve got it bad,” says Elvia Hernandez, who works for the private company that manages much of Guymon’s city services.

Some Hispanic residents worry about the fate of the Obama-era immigration policy, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which Trump has called on Congress to fix, but it’s not a concern at the tip of their tongues. Most fret about everyday issues: education — just 71 percent of Texas County residents earn a high school diploma, and college attendance lags behind statewide rates; health care — a quarter are uninsured; location — caught between Kansas and Texas, Oklahoma’s differences in state licensing laws complicate growth for small businesses in the Panhandle, as school quality is affected as well. “The teacher shortage is one of the most severe in the nation,” notes Joy Hofmeister, the state superintendent, citing the salaries teachers get as a key reason. “They can go to a neighboring state like Texas and start at $ 51,000. In Oklahoma, the starting pay is $ 31,600.”

While minorities are disproportionately affected by those statistics, there is some comfort in the fact that their obstacles are more rural than racial. It’s a burden felt historically by all those who live in this region nicknamed “Texlahoma,” where people have often complained about being ignored by their state capital, to the extent that they have threatened to form their own state a few times since the Great Depression.

***

Barefoot, in kimonos, two dozen mostly Latino kids grapple on mats in front of a poster that reads “Bueno Brazilian Jiu Jitsu” in bold letters. It’s an ode to the gym’s black-belt professor, Douglas Bueno, who visits monthly, but also to the Mexican heritage of Ruben Cruz, who started the practice in a Guymon garage with two friends nearly two years ago.

Born in El Paso but raised in Guymon after his father arrived as a concrete worker supporting the Seaboard plant, Cruz likes to say his is one of the founding Hispanic families of the area. “Because there was nobody,” the 31-year-old says. By day, he works as a personal banker; by night, he is here, teaching martial arts. Profits are scarce, but he’s proud of joining many in that first class of immigrants who are now investing back — 34 percent of Texas County businesses are minority-owned, compared to roughly 20 percent across Oklahoma.

img 8518

The verdict on the changing faces of Texas County is far from settled. “Hispanics are not yet sitting at seats they should be, leadership-wise,” says Medina, who notes that Guymon’s first Hispanic councilman was only recently elected. That sentiment is felt in the business community too, says Cruz: “There have been growing pains. They don’t want you to run stuff. Certain people are just stuck in their old ways.” A study by Roberto Gallardo, an assistant director at the Purdue Center for Regional Development, found that rural communities with more immigrants tend to perform better economically, and yet, polls and surveys have also shown rural residents to be more wary of immigration than urban dwellers. “There are definitely challenges of cultural clash, and backlash. We’ve seen it in our politics nationally already,” says Perry, of the Oklahoma Policy Institute.

Credit the economic success or the territorial oddities of the panhandle, but you don’t hear much about those national clashes in Texas County. “It’s not that we live in our own bubble, but we are isolated,” Medina says. “We have always been isolated, whether it’s funding, housing or road pavement.” Locals’ gripes aren’t so much with neighbors, or with Washington, but with Oklahoma City.

Guymon could use more attention from “downstate,” they say. And the rest of the country could learn a thing or two from paying attention to Guymon.
