Amazon hires unsafe trucking firms twice as often as peers, WSJ finds

For years, people in cars stuck behind blue delivery trucks in traffic have echoed media reports criticizing Amazon for clogging American roadways. It’s well-known that the Amazon drivers steering these fleets of trucks and vans don’t actually work for Amazon but are hired by companies contracted by Amazon, and Amazon has repeatedly denied liability for any dangerous driving reported, though.

Because Amazon has contracts with more than 50,000 firms, just how dangerous Amazon’s contracted drivers really are remains a question that is hard to track. However, The Information reported last year that horrific car crashes are part and parcel of Amazon’s culture of convenience. And then more recently, The Wall Street Journal provided another window into how deadly America’s favorite speedy delivery service can be. Since 2015, WSJ reported this week, “Trucking companies hauling freight for Amazon have been involved in crashes that killed more than 75 people.”

To arrive at this number, WSJ partnered with Jason Miller—a Michigan State University professor who researches transportation safety—to analyze various sources of government data from “3,512 trucking companies that were inspected by authorities three or more times while hauling trailers for Amazon since February 2020.”

Lisa Snowdon, 48, was on hand to offer some fashion advice on today’s edition of This Morning, giving viewers advice on the best face masks they could get their hands on. The presenter was speaking with hosts Phillip Schofield, 59, and Holly Willoughby, 39, from her home in Essex as the ITV show continues to adhere to social distancing rules. However, the fashion expert had to be taken off in the midst of her appearance on the programme as a technical blunder meant it was hard for her co-stars to understand what she was saying.

 

From today, it will now be mandatory for members of the public to wear a face mask on public transport or they will be refused travel.

Although disposable ones are available, Lisa wanted to show viewers the reusable, washable face coverings which are currently on offer.

The presenter also explained how those watching at home could also make their own with spare fabric they had lying around the house.

As soon as her link was brought on air, however, it was clear the feed and signal weren’t strong enough to hold a clear picture.

With her voice broken and the image blurred, it was decided to take her off air, with Phillip explaining what was happening.

In the midst of her demonstration, Lisa’s segment was put on “pause” by her colleague, who said: “Since we’ve been doing this show in lockdown, it hasn’t happened very often at all.

“We’ve got a really poor signal here. This happens to families up and down the country all the time,” he added.

The presenter was then removed from the screen, to which Phillip explained: “We’re just going to dial Lisa back now and see if we can improve that signal.”

Low and behold, the feed returned with the picture much clearer as the fashion expert carried on with her demonstrations.

The host told his co-star: “I actually got up, got my phone from the table and I got up and took a picture of you.

“Because your beauty lights are perfectly positioned in your glasses,” he continued, before showing a picture of Lisa with what seemed to be alien eyes on her glasses.

As the fashion expert burst into hysterics, Phillip remarked: “You’ve got alien eyes,” with his colleague mimicking the X-Files theme tune.

Rounding off the segment, Lisa apologised for the signal, before the programme went to an advertisement break.

This wasn’t the only bit of chaos which happened this morning as the guest schedule had to be altered at the last minute.

The hosts were due to speak with the President of Iceland Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, but the politician didn’t take into account the time difference.

As a result, the presenters were thrown into disarray and had to bring some of their other segments forward much earlier than planned.

Joining chef James Martin, 47, to discuss cheese boards, the cook told Phillip and Holly he was “saving them” by speaking with them in an earlier time slot.

Kate Middleton, 36, and Meghan Markle, 37, have travelled to a number of countries between them. Meghan recently conducted her first tour with Prince Harry to Australia and New Zealand while Kate has joined Prince William in countries such as India, Canada and Australia among others. The pair both follow a certain rule when travelling abroad, something which Princess Diana rarely did. They both choose to wear foreign designers from the country they are travelling to as a nod to their culture.

Kate Middleton wore a grey coat by Toronto designer Bojana Sentaler during their 2016 Canada tour, which saw the item quickly sell out.

Another example of the Kate Middleton effect was in 2017 after the royal joined Prince William to India.

She wore a bohemian dress by Indian designer Anita Dongre which prompted the website to crash as many flocked to buy it.

Kate also went for Amrapali Jewels earrings during an official dinner in the country, which was a jewellery brand founded in Jaipur.

Other examples include a cocktail dress by Polish designer Gosia Baczyńska in Warsaw and a lace dress by Australian designer Zimmerman while in Sydney.

Meghan Markle has also chosen to do the same in a way to support local artists and designers.

She chose Scottish brand Strathberry for her bag and wore a tartan coat for her visit to Edinburgh, which prompted the bag seller not only to sell out but to launch a bag in her name.

Her visit to Wales also saw Welsh designer Huit’s black jeans gain popularity, resulting in a three-month waiting list.

During her first official tour as the Duchess of Sussex, she chose Kiwi designer Jessica McCormack and Karen Walker for her dresses and jewellery while touring New Zealand.

Australian designer Karen Gee ’s website also crashed after Meghan wore her white dress on the first day of the Australia tour.

While Diana rarely chose to wear local designers, opting for her own personal favourites, she often still respected the local culture.

During a visit to Japan, she wore a white dress with red polka dots, a nod to the national flag.

Despite being designed by British designers the Emanuels, who also designed Diana’s wedding dress, private notes revealed “modesty is the order of the day” when they created her outfit choices to the Middle East.

She also chose to wear green in Pakistan which is a colour of respect.

Some of her favourite designers flew the British flag, with Catherine Walker, and Bruce Oldfield notable designers.

They admitted they “really enjoyed the Oculus” according to Graham Nordin, director of wine experience at Mission Hill Winery.

They explained that they were Merlot drinkers usually, meaning they often opt for a red wine when travelling.

One thing the royals do not appear to be a fan of is beer, despite often trying it during visits.

Kate tried the local Heidelberg beer in Poland, as well as a pint of Guinness during St Patrick Day.

A source told the Mirror: “Neither Kate nor William is a big beer drinker.”

Royal Prince Philip is a beer drinker, however, choosing Boddingtons.

Other members of the Royal Family also like to engage in a tipple.

Meghan Markle named her previous lifestyle blog, The Tig, after her favourite wine Tignanello.

Queen Elizabeth opts for a gin and tonic with Dubonnet and a lemon slice.

Her son, Prince Charles goes one further and takes his own alcohol with the Duchess of Cornwall when they travel.

To avoid their drinks being spiked, they carry it with them in their luggage abroad.

Prince Harry is rumoured to have given up alcohol in recent months.

This is in solidarity with his wife Meghan who is currently pregnant.

It’s fair to say that the Windows 10 October 2018 Update has not been Microsoft’s most successful update. Reports of data loss quickly emerged, forcing Microsoft to suspend distribution of the update. It has since been fixed and is currently undergoing renewed testing pending a re-release.

This isn’t the first Windows feature update that’s had problems—we’ve seen things like significant hardware incompatibilities in previous updates—but it’s certainly the worst. While most of us know the theory of having backups, the reality is that lots of data, especially on home PCs, has no real backup, and deleting that data is thus disastrous.

Windows as a service

Microsoft’s ambition with Windows 10 was to radically shake up how it develops Windows 10. The company wanted to better respond to customer and market needs, and to put improved new features into customers’ hands sooner. Core to this was the notion that Windows 10 is the “last” version of Windows—all new development work will be an update to Windows 10, delivered through feature updates several times a year. This new development model was branded “Windows as a Service.” And after some initial fumbling, Microsoft settled on a cadence of two feature updates a year; one in April, one in October.
