It was almost weekly that teams were announcing their new lineups — keeping track of it all was challenging.

But not that the curling season has hit the halfway point the adjustment period is over, and teams are gearing up for the Scotties and Brier push. 

"You can only say we're a new team for so long," Kevin Koe said. "We can't keep saying that forever. It's time to get to where we think we can be."

Koe's former team represented Canada at the Olympics just one year ago. His third Marc Kennedy announced a leave from curling at the conclusion of last year and Brent Laing left to join John Epping. Koe and Ben Hebert had to find two new players in a hurry. B.J. Neufeld has taken the role of third and Colton Flasch is playing second.

"We had a great first half," Koe said. "I'm really happy with where we're at and I feel we have a lot of room to improve. It's time to crank it up a bit."

It's not uncommon for teams to disassemble and reload for the four-year Olympic cycle. That's the new reality. Koe was at the forefront of this practice when he did it last cycle as well.

"You have to make some tough decisions sometimes," Koe said. "They're not easy but you hope they work out in the end."

As competitive as Koe's new team has been so far this year, he knows they're still a ways off from where the skip wants them to be.

"We're still learning," he said. "The communication in some of the games still needs work to get more out of the rocks we're throwing. Tiny little things make the biggest difference against the top teams."

All-skip success

One of the biggest shakeups in the off-season consisted of four skips leaving their teams and forming a new super-skip team led by Kerri Einarson.

There we so many questions and comments about how this team was going to come together — too many skips on one team?

Einarson, Val Sweeting, Shannon Birchard and Briane Meilleur, who all skipped their own teams in 2017-18, answered their critics in a big way, winning four World Curling Tour events to open this season.

"We've really clicked from the start and the girls have really embraced their roles in their new positions," Einarson said. "It all comes down to chemistry. You have to be able to get along on and off the ice."

Einarson says the team got together a number of times throughout the off-season to get to know each other better and talk about goals for the future. They've committed to this four-year cycle and seem to be gaining confidence at each event.

"Chemistry is a big part of the game and building those relationships with your players and building trust," Einarson said.

Einarson says the team voted on her the skip and throwing last rocks. She says their confidence in her has made all the difference halfway through the year.

"They chose me to skip so they have a lot of trust in me calling the game and throwing the last rock. The girls have been so supportive."

Carruthers still working out the kinks

Then there's Team Carruthers, which joined forces with Mike McEwen to form a powerhouse Manitoba squad during the off-season.

But this year has been frustrating at times as Reid Carruthers and McEwen continue to learn how each other call the game.

"Off the ice, it's exactly what I thought it would be," Carruthers said. "On the ice we haven't had the success I'd hope for. It's not for lack of chemistry."

Throughout a number of events this season they've been tinkering with the lineup. In some cases Carruthers has called the game and thrown third, with McEwen throwing last rocks. This week in North Battleford, Sask., Carruthers is calling the game and throwing last rocks.

"This is our last trial event in a lot of ways before provincials," Carruthers said. "We have a couple of events after this and I think we'll lock in our positions during those."

Carruthers says there have been flashes of great curling during the season but that they've been plagued with inconsistencies, something he says they need to figure out quickly.

"The toughest thing is learning what not to say," he said. "Figuring out what to say is maybe a little easier but knowing when to bite your tongue is tough."

Canada’s men’s sprint story at last month’s world track and field championships began with the disastrous news that Andre De Grasse was out with an injury. It ended with the 4×100-metre relay team crossing a distant sixth.

Now, heading into an off-year in the sport, with no Olympics or world championships, Canada’s fastest men are taking a break and slowing down.

De Grasse and his relay teammates will spend part of the next few weeks hosting a series of six-minute walks across Canada to raise awareness for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a rare and fatal lung condition. Six minutes, explained Akeem Haynes, because “respirologists use the six-minute mark as a judgement to see if the disease is progressing, and because six minutes seems like a marathon for [sufferers].”

De Grasse, Haynes, Aaron Brown and Brendon Rodney met with the media in Toronto on Wednesday to talk about their work with IPF, part of a welcome competitive break after a largely disappointing season.

De Grasse recovering well

The 23-year-old De Grasse had set his season sights on beating Usain Bolt in the Jamaican superstar’s career finale, only to suffer a hamstring strain days before the worlds in London.

De Grasse has recently been cleared to resume full training, as evident by a recent Instagram post — the sprinter posted video of him playing soccer with a few friends and fellow Puma athletes on a trip last week to Germany.

“Everything is going well,” said the three-time Olympic medallist. “I had an MRI and things were perfect, so I definitely was trying to take advantage of doing other things, and not thinking about track and having fun doing something else.”

De Grasse also took in Sunday’s Borussia Dortmund game at Westfalenstadion versus Cologne, and met German midfielder Marco Reus.

Light season ahead

With no Olympics or world championships, the Commonwealth Games in April highlight an otherwise light season in the sport. Toronto will also host the NACAC championships this summer, which features athletes from North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletics.

“We’re just trying to have fun,” Rodney said. “Next year’s an off-year so any time we can come home and support, or run in Canada, I think we’re all going to try to do that, put on a show. We’ll get serious the year after that.”

The foursome welcome the down time to focus on off-track endeavours, such as the IPF campaign.

“When you can use sport to raise awareness of real-life problems, that’s when it becomes more than just about every day sport and competition,” Brown said. “You want to be able to make a difference in society and help people in the community, and give back. So when you’re able to reach that level where you have the power to do that through sport, it makes you feel good, and it makes you feel like you’re a part of the community. It’s something bigger than competition.”

Bad-luck meet

De Grasse’s withdrawal in London was only the beginning of a bad-luck meet for Canada that saw Olympic high jump champion Derek Drouin withdraw with an injury, and numerous athletes, including reigning world decathlon silver medallist Damian Warner, fall ill to a stomach virus. De Grasse had a legitimate shot at gold in the 100 and 200. The relay team — world and Olympic bronze medallists — was poised for a podium performance before De Grasse went down. And Brown, who had medal potential in the 200, was disqualified in the heats for a lane violation.

“I didn’t want to watch [the 200 final],” Brown said. “But you can’t dwell too much on it, there’s going to be more opportunities.”

Despite their poor luck, Brown said the world results — Turkey’s Ramil Guliyev was the surprise winner in the 200 — bode well for Canada’s crop of young and talented sprinters.

“The great thing is, this is the current crop of sprinters moving forward in the future,” said the 25-year-old from Toronto. “Obviously, a couple major people weren’t in the 200 [including Bolt and De Grasse], but for the most part this is who we’re going to be dealing with. There are years to come where we can show what we can do.”

2016 was a season unlike any the Dallas Cowboys truly expected as they finished with a 13-3 record and made it to the Divisional Round of the playoffs before being eliminated by the Green Bay Packers. Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott and rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott led the way, but some things need to be corrected to take those extra steps to the Super Bowl. With that being said, there are a number of NFL free agents the Cowboys could target in the offseason.

Jon Machota of the Dallas News says that the Cowboys have done a great job of not overspending in free agency over the years even though they have made some mistakes here and there. They gave Greg Hardy big money and that didn’t work out, but if a good pass rusher does pop up, Jerry Jones may look at opening their wallet.

DE Jason Pierre-Paul – New York Giants

The Cowboys need a pass rusher and there is no denying that by any stretch of the imagination. While some may think that defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has lost a step in recent years, he may honestly just need some new surroundings to bring him back to form.

In 2014, JPP finished the season with 12.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in a full 16-game season. Over the last two years, Pierre-Paul had just eight sacks and three forced fumbles in just 20 games. Fansided is reporting that it is time for the Giants to move on from JPP after he signed a one-year deal for 2016 but didn’t do anything to deserve a long term contract.

S Eric Berry – Kansas City Chiefs

Back in December, ESPN was already saying that safety Eric Berry was going to be the biggest 2017 free agent decision for the Kansas City Chiefs. It is highly doubtful that KC will be able to find the salary cap space to sign him, and that will open the door for the Cowboys and many other teams.

According to Cheat Sheet, the Cowboys could look at another Chiefs player in nose tackle Donatri Poe who could easily become a fixture on the interior of the defensive line. Either player will cost a hefty amount, but they would be worth it.

DE Sheldon Richardson – New York Jets

Going back to the point of the Cowboys needing a pass rush, if they don’t want to take a chance on Jason Pierre-Paul and want to go a bit younger, they should look no further than Sheldon Richardson. Yes, he had an off season in 2016, but looking back at his four years in the NFL, his stats are hard to ignore.

Richardson has 18 career sacks and five forced fumbles in his first four NFL seasons, and the Cowboys could likely sign him for less than JPP.

WR DeSean Jackson – Washington Redskins

Who wouldn’t want to have a talent like DeSean Jackson on their roster? While he has enjoyed his time with the Redskins, Jackson could very well end up testing the waters of free agency and it isn’t out of the question for the Cowboys to give him a look or two.

Sports Day is reporting that the Cowboys may very well end up taking wide receiver John Ross out of Washington with the number 28 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Dallas has shown that they can do a lot of great work with rookies and Ross is being seen as a “DeSean Jackson clone.” Still, Jackson’s veteran experience would really help Dallas’ young stars if he can be had for the right price.

The Dallas Cowboys were able to overcome a lot of adversity in 2016 with the injury to Tony Romo and having a couple of rookies running the offense. Without winning or even appearing in the Super Bowl, it is obvious that there are a few holes that need to be filled and some problems that need to be fixed. The NFL free agent season in 2017 could bring about a lot of movement and the Cowboys need to focus on some of these key targets.
