During a visit to Iceland, the 49-year-old is set to shock viewers as he whips up a meringue using alternative ingredients.

Instead of using egg whites, Paul decides to mix it up and uses lamb’s blood instead.

The presenter later tucks into the dessert and insists it is “delicious”.

“It tastes like a sweet meringue. You wouldn’t know it was blood in there.

“The blood meringue is delicious. I can’t believe I’m saying that,” reports The Sun.

In next week’s episode of Food Network’s Paul Hollywood: City Bakes, the celebrity chef is also given a huge cod head that is sweetened with seaweed.

Paul is certainly in-demand as it has just been announced that he will be taking viewers on his baking journey in a new Channel 4 cookery show.

The Merseyside star will share the personal story behind his rise to culinary stardom whilst cooking up a menu of treats as he talks about the kitchens, chefs and recipes that changed his life.

His favourite toppings are chocolate spread and banana or lemon curd, cream and fruit, but what makes the ideal pancake in Selasi’s books? 

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Selasi said: “I’m not a fan of sugar and lemon juice – weirdo I know – but I love thick fluffy pancakes. 

“If you’re going to eat pancakes, you might as well go all out. No crepe style/thin looking pancakes – well unless they’re stacked up to make one big one. It’s all about the stacking and mouthful.” 

So what are some top tips for making the best pancake?

According to the baker, one of the most important things to do is to be patient with the batter by making sure to leave it to rest for approximately 20 minutes, in order for the raising agents to work. 

He added: “Low heat always ensures your pancake is cooked to perfection – golden brown and fluffy textures. I like to use coconut oil to make sure they will be nice and crisp around the edges, while being fluffy inside. 

“If stacking, pre-heat your oven at a low temperature and store the cooked pancakes in the oven to keep the pancakes warm until they’re ready to munch. 

“Also, always flip your pancakes for that added joie de vivre and feel good factor. It’s fun. It seriously gives the pancake that extra taste.”

Above all, it’s important to be relaxed when making pancakes: “Pancake making is supposed to be fun and relaxing so it’s all about sitting back (maybe not too relaxed or else you’ll have charred pancakes) and watching the batter transform into something satisfying. My ingredient twist is putting a spoonful of coconut oil in the pan – I love adding the coconut taste to my pancakes.” 

While Selasi’s skills in the kitchen earned him a place just short of the Bake Off final, he, like everyone else, has had his fair share of pancake disasters. 

He revealed: “Um we all have right? One of my very first attempts was awful. It turned out quite chewy. How? No idea.” 

To incorporate his love of coconut oil and pancakes, Selasi has teamed up with Vita Coco Coconut Oil to create an innovative savoury pancake recipe – perfect for those short of a sweet tooth. 

Butternut squash, goat’s cheese and crispy bacon pancake

Ingredients 

Batter (makes 10): 

100g plain flour 

1 medium egg

150ml whole milk 

Pinch of salt 

Ground black pepper 

1 tbsp of Vita Coco Coconut Oil, melted

2 to 3 tbsp of Vita Coco Coconut Oil (for frying) 

Topping: 

Butternut squash

1 medium red onion 

1 tsp Vita Coco Coconut Oil 

Crispy bacon

Goats cheese 

Parmesan shavings 

Pine nuts 

Spinach 

Method: 

Preheat the oven at 180 degrees (fan oven). 

In a large bowl, add the flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper. 

Make a well in the centre and gradually pour in the milk while stirring continuously. This is to ensure you have no lumps in the batter. 

Add the melted Vita Coco Coconut Oil and mix well until you have a smooth batter. 

Leave to rest for approximately 20 minutes. 

In the meantime, peel the squash, cut in half and remove the seeds. Cut into cubes and set aside. Chop the onion and toss in coconut oil with the squash. 

Place the onion and squash in a baking tray and bake for 18-20 minutes. 

Grill the bacon until crispy, and chop into pieces. 

Pop a tablespoon of Vita Coco Coconut Oil in each cast iron pan and place on the same shelf in the oven. 

Heat the Vita Coco Coconut Oil in the oven until very hot (tip – just like making Yorkshire puddings). 

Once hot and cracking, open the oven and using a ladle, pour the batter evenly between the two hot pans. 

Bake for 15 to 18 minutes. 

Take the pancakes out of the oven and top with ingredients. 

Bake for a further three to five minutes until the cheese is melted and pour even amounts of the batter into each pan then bake for 15 to 18 minutes.

For Prue Leith was a Sunday Express cookery columnist in the 1970s, entertaining readers with simple but brilliant recipes coupled with revealing insights into her private life. 

Would-be Bake Off stars might want to take a look at the dishes favoured by the restaurateur, ahead of auditions for the show, which was poached by Channel 4 from the BBC last year.

In 1979 Prue told readers: “The pleasures of cooking are social – the primitive pleasure in assuaging the family’s hunger and the sophisticated ones of eliciting satisfied sighs.

Prue also extols the virtues of everyday ingredients and of banishing waste. Of breadcrumb pancakes [see recipe, below] she wrote: “These are a delicious variation on dropped scones, and useful for using up stale bread. 

“Usually a tea-time indulgence, they are also good served with a rasher of grilled bacon and a blob of sour cream for supper.” 

Chocolate truffles are recommended as an ideal Christmas treat and she suggests: “Whisky, rum or brandy can be substituted for the sherry. A little booze is vital, though.”

Revellers are also encouraged to be inventive by making fruit and nut chocolates to hang on the Christmas tree, wrapped in silver paper. 

“They look and are like the best hand-made chocolates from Bond Street,” she promised. But one idea did not go down so well. 

She recalled: “Once I wrote suggesting that Granny might like a box of home-made cookies for Christmas. 

“I was immediately pelted with indignant letters from grans, nans and aunties saying that Chanel No 5, a skateboard, a T-shirt with I’m One on the bosom, the latest Boomtown Rats single and a copy of the Joy of Sex, Part II, would be more in their line.”

Although genuinely popular with readers, she later revealed her relationship with then editor, the late Sir John Junor, was a little flat.

Describing him as an “unreformed Scot who hated onions, garlic, and anything remotely spicy” she made it clear he would not be her ideal dining companion. The woman seeking to follow in the footsteps of 81-year-old Mary Berry has plenty of judging experience from BBC Two’s Great British Menu, which she found an unexpected joy. 

She writes on her website: ‘‘I thought I detested doing telly (I’m so vain I hate how I look, you spend all day filming for 20 usable minutes, studios are always freezing or stifling etc), but I just love the GBM. 

“Oliver and Matthew, my fellow judges are a hoot, the crew members are funny and delightful and never snappy, precious or antsy. But how long can an old duck like me (I am well into my seventies for Pete’s sake) go on doing this?” 

Prue, 77, married Scottish clothes designer John Playfair, 71, last year, after he wooed her with haggis meals, but they still live in their own houses which are a mile apart in England. 

Her first husband, South African author Rayne Kruger, died in 2002. They had been married for 38 years.

Leith’s breadcrumb pancakes recipe

INGREDIENTS 

1 teacup fine breadcrumbs 

1 teacup milk 1oz butter, melted 

1 small egg, separated 

3oz flour H

alf a teaspoon salt 

1 teaspoon baking powder 

METHOD 

Soak the crumbs in the milk. Beat in the butter, then the egg yolk, then the flour, salt and baking powder. Lastly add the egg white, whisked to a snow. 

Lightly grease a heavy frying pan or griddle iron and heat well. Drop spoonfuls of the batter on to the hot surface and turn them over as they brown. 

Serve, buttered and drizzled with golden syrup, sugar or maple syrup.
