  • Amazon announced it's holding a new sales event called the "Prime Early Access Sale" in October.
  • Amazon has historically had a big sales event for its prime subscribers in July.
  • Insider previously reported Amazon was planning the second October event.

Amazon is doubling up its usual "Prime Day" sales bonanza by hosting another sales event for its Prime subscription members in October, the retail giant announced in a press release Monday.

The sales event, which will run through October 11 and 12, will be called the "Prime Early Access Sale" and feature a list of 100 "popular and giftable items" per Amazon's press release.

Insider's Katherine Long reported in July that Amazon was planning an October deals event after viewing internal company documents describing the event, but confirmation only arrived Monday,

The documents reported by Insider called the Early Access Sale a "high velocity" sales event designed to reward people who are signed up to Amazon's subscription service, Amazon Prime.

Amazon is already famous for Prime Day, which takes place in July. The October timing of the Early Access Sale means Amazon will be throwing the sales event right before it heads into its busy holiday season, known internally as "peak."

Amazon increased the annual price of its Prime membership in February by $ 20 in the US, and announced in July it was raising prices in several European countries by as much as 43%.

Amazon did not immediately respond when contacted by Insider about why it had decided to introduce another sales day.

The e-commerce giant experienced a huge surge in demand at the onset of the pandemic, which caused the company to buy up warehouse space that now exceeds its needs, chief financial officer Brian Olsavsky told reporters in April.

Speaking to Digital Trends, a Sega of America representative confirmed the reason for the name change.

“I can confirm the series will be known as “Like a Dragon” moving forward to more closely align with the Japanese name,” a representative for Sega of America tells Digital Trends.

In Japan, Sega has called the series Ryū ga Gotoku since its inception in 2005, and that phrase is even the namesake of developer RGG Studio. “Ryū ga Gotoku” translates to “like a dragon” in English, but Sega decided to call the series Yakuza when it brought the first game to the West in 2006. Now that the series is more popular than ever and largely moved on from telling stories directly focused on the Yakuza, it makes sense for Sega to give the series a similar title in all regions. Sega localization producer Scott Strichart pointed out on Twitter that 2020’s Yakuza: Like a Dragon foreshadowed the change by naming a chapter “Chapter 12: The End of Yakuza.” Strichart is not involved with the localization of upcoming Like a Dragon titles.

Three Like a Dragon games are in the works for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Like a Dragon: Ishin will be the first one of them to release, as it launches on February 23, 2023. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name follows later next year, while Like a Dragon 8 continues the mainline series in 2024.

The United States, one of the world’s richest and most developed countries, has met the World Health organization’s criteria to be listed as a country with circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday.

The US now joins the ranks of around 30 other polio outbreak countries, largely low- and middle-income, including Ethiopia, Mozambique, Somalia, and Yemen. Notably, the list includes just two other high-income countries—the United Kingdom and Israel—which have detected the circulation of a poliovirus strain genetically linked to the one spreading in the US.

Specifically, the US met the criteria for WHO’s list by documenting a patient with vaccine-derived poliovirus and having at least one environmental sample of vaccine-derived poliovirus. In July, health officials in New York’s Rockland County reported a case of paralytic polio in an unvaccinated resident who had not recently traveled. Since then, New York officials and the CDC surveilled the spread of the virus in wastewater, finding 57 positive samples from four New York counties and New York City. The dates of the positive samples span from April to a recent sampling in August.

Raven’s Home Renewal Is Officially TBD, as Shooting Wraps on Season 4 https://briefnews.eu/ravens-home-renewal-is-officially-tbd-as-shooting-wraps-on-season-4/ https://briefnews.eu/ravens-home-renewal-is-officially-tbd-as-shooting-wraps-on-season-4/#respond Sat, 30 Jan 2021 20:59:12 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/ravens-home-renewal-is-officially-tbd-as-shooting-wraps-on-season-4/

Not even its psychic lead could at this point predict Raven’s Home‘s future, despite one crew member’s comments that sparked rumors of cancellation.

As Season 4 of the Disney Channel spinoff wrapped taping on Friday night, a network rep confirmed to TVLine that there has been no official decision on Season 5. This season’s remaining episodes, meanwhile, are set to begin airing Friday, March 19.

Nancy Butts Martin, a costume designer on the series, had celebrated the finale’s taping by writing on Instagram, “@RavenSymone and @AnnelieseVanDerPol Thank You to my two favorite people You started it all with #thatssoraven and now we are ending it with #ravenshome Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your magical world for all of these years I love you both.”

As first noted by Spoiler TV, Butts Martin doubled-down on that statement, replying to a fan, “We just finished Season 4 and it was a series wrap! That was the end!”

Sources tell TVLine that the crew member had “made assumptions” because a renewal decision has not yet been made.

In October, series lead Raven-Symoné commented to TVLine about her hopes for the future of the family friendly comedy, saying she “would love for this show to go as long as it can, and for the kids’ stories to resonate with as many generations as possible.”

In other Disney Channel news, the network this week ordered a live-action superhero comedy series, Ultra Violet & Blue Demon, starring legendary luchador and professional wrestler Blue Demon Jr. as a version of himself and Scarlett Estevez (Bunk’d, Lucifer) as Ultra Violet.

In addition, Hamster & Gretel, a superhero comedy from Emmy-winning Phineas & Ferb co-creator Dan Povenmire, has also been greenlit. Inspired by Povenmire’s relationship with his younger sister, the music-filled animated series will follow Kevin and his kid sis Gretel, who are about to be bestowed superpowers by space aliens when something goes awry, and it’s Gretel and her pet hamster who suddenly have new abilities.

MLB Officially Locks in Shortened Season https://briefnews.eu/mlb-officially-locks-in-shortened-season/ https://briefnews.eu/mlb-officially-locks-in-shortened-season/#respond Wed, 24 Jun 2020 07:02:24 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/mlb-officially-locks-in-shortened-season/

Play ball! Major League Baseball has settled on a plan for a 60-game season that will begin around July 24, according to ESPN.

Following months of back-and-forth negotiations with the players’ union, the league’s owners voted to approve a 60-game schedule for the 2020 season on Monday. The players’ union agreed to the league’s terms on Tuesday night, tweeting: “All remaining issues have been resolved and Players are reporting to training camps.” Camps are set to open July 1.

MLB in March cancelled spring training for this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic. “This action is being taken in the interests of the safety and wellbeing or our players, clubs and our millions of loyal fans,” the league said then in a statement, adding that they will “continue to evaluate ongoing events” going forward and “have been preparing a variety of contingency plans” for the regular season.

MLB at the time joined fellow sports leagues the NBA and the NHL in shutting down operations in light of the outbreak. The NBA suspended its season on March 11 after All-Star player Rudy Gobert tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, and the NHL followed suit a day later.

The NBA earlier this month approved a plan to resume the 2019-20 regular season on July 31, by bringing 22 of 30 teams — excluding those without a realistic shot at the postseason — to the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, where they will play eight regular season games each, followed by a possible play-in tournament for the eighth seed (if necessary) and then the playoffs, which could stretch to Oct. 12 at the latest.

Summer Olympics Officially Postponed Due to Coronavirus Outbreak https://briefnews.eu/summer-olympics-officially-postponed-due-to-coronavirus-outbreak/ https://briefnews.eu/summer-olympics-officially-postponed-due-to-coronavirus-outbreak/#respond Tue, 24 Mar 2020 13:28:20 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/summer-olympics-officially-postponed-due-to-coronavirus-outbreak/

This year’s Summer Olympics are the latest victim of the global coronavirus outbreak: The international competition has officially been postponed in light of the pandemic.

The games were set to take place in Tokyo from July 24 to August 9, with NBC handling all broadcast rights via the Peacock network and its sister channels. On Tuesday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters that he reached an agreement with the International Olympic Committee to delay the games for about a year. At the latest, they will now be held in Summer 2021, though a more specific timeline has not been announced.

The IOC’s executive board announced plans on March 22 to “step up its scenario planning” for the Summer Olympics, but emphasized that cancellation was “not on the agenda.” The following day, IOC member Dick Pound told USA Today that “postponement has been decided,” with a move to 2021 the most likely scenario.

The global coronavirus outbreak continues to affect TV shows and events, with more than 40,000 cases now reported in the United States and more than 100 TV shows shutting down production. In the sports world alone, the NBA suspended its current season after All-Star player Rudy Gobert tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, and the NHL followed suit the following day; Major League Baseball pushed back the start of the regular season for at least two weeks and cancelled spring training; and the NCAA cancelled the annual March Madness men’s college basketball tournament, along with all other remaining winter and spring championships.

HBO has made it official: It has scrapped its in-the-works Game of Thrones spinoff from Jane Goldman. News of the project’s demise leaked earlier this week.

“After careful consideration, we have decided not to move forward to series with the untitled Game of Thrones prequel,” the premium cabler said in a statement late Friday. “We thank Jane Goldman, [fellow EP] S.J. Clarkson, and the talented cast and crew for all of their hard work and dedication.”

HBO, meanwhile, is moving forward with the House Targaryen-centered prequel series House of the Dragon, handing the spinoff a 10-episode straight to series order (full story here).

SNL Has Officially Run Out of Ideas For Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump https://briefnews.eu/snl-has-officially-run-out-of-ideas-for-alec-baldwins-donald-trump/ https://briefnews.eu/snl-has-officially-run-out-of-ideas-for-alec-baldwins-donald-trump/#respond Sun, 19 May 2019 17:20:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/snl-has-officially-run-out-of-ideas-for-alec-baldwins-donald-trump/

You’d think a bombastic reality-show-host president who never stops creating controversy would be a bottomless gold mine for Saturday Night Live — so why do SNL‘s Donald Trump sketches feel so tired and toothless?

Last night’s season finale featured yet another cold open starring Alec Baldwin’s President Trump, this time with him singing Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now,” along with wife Melania, VP Mike Pence and eventually Robert De Niro’s Robert Mueller. Baldwin’s appearances as Trump have been disappointing for a while now — the actor himself seems bored with the role that won him an Emmy — but this may have been a shockingly unfunny low point. What, exactly, is the comedic point of having President Trump and his cronies sing a Queen song together? The live studio audience seemed stunned and barely laughed, and the whole thing felt more obligatory than inspired.

That’s really the problem here: SNL feels compelled to tackle Trump, but it doesn’t really have anything funny or insightful to say about him. Baldwin’s parody of him has devolved into predictable shtick, and the writing never has the courage to actually address the very serious issues his administration and our country are facing. To be blunt, the world is on fire right now — Leslie Jones’ Weekend Update monologue railing against the abortion bans in Georgia and Alabama spoke to that with a righteous fury — but when it comes to Trump, SNL is merely standing on the sidelines offering limp jokes about his tweeting habits. It’s afraid to alienate anyone on either end of the political spectrum, so it ends up satisfying no one.

I know that Baldwin’s Trump, along with Kate McKinnon’s Hillary Clinton, brought a surge of attention and ratings to SNL during the 2016 campaign, and it’s understandable that SNL would want to keep riding that wave. But that wave is over. It might be time for SNL to consider letting a cast member play Trump: Baldwin’s limited availability makes it tough for them to jump on breaking news, and maybe someone else could bring a fresh spin to the role. (And the sooner they lose De Niro’s wooden Mueller impression, the better. Who could imagine one of our greatest living actors could be so stiff?)

But really, it all comes down to the writing: If Saturday Night Live‘s best idea for parodying Donald Trump is to show him singing and dancing in an utterly pointless sketch, it’s better off not having him on the show at all.

Are you still enjoying SNL‘s take on Trump, or are you ready to vote it out of office? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Lyft officially files to go public https://briefnews.eu/lyft-officially-files-to-go-public/ https://briefnews.eu/lyft-officially-files-to-go-public/#respond Fri, 01 Mar 2019 17:28:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lyft-officially-files-to-go-public/

Lyft has revealed its financial details for the first time as it prepares for an initial public offering. Like rival Uber, it first filed the paperwork confidentially in December, and now its S-1 is public through the Securities and Exchange Commission. Lyft lost $ 911 million in 2018, but doubled revenue to $ 2.1 billion from 2017. It had $ 8.1 billion in bookings over the year, up from $ 4.6 billion in 2017. Lyft didn’t state how much it’s looking to raise in the IPO — it left a placeholder figure of $ 100 million in the filing. It plans to go public on Nasdaq under the “LYFT” ticket symbol.

Drivers have earned more than $ 10 billion since Lyft debuted, and more than a billion rides have taken place through the ride-hailing platform. More than 1.1 million drivers ferried around 18.6 million “active riders” in the last three months of 2018. The service is active in more than 300 markets in the US and Canada, and Lyft said it had 39 percent of the US ridesharing market in December, up from 22 percent two years before.

In the risk factor section, Lyft noted it needs to keep up with competitors on the self-driving car front. “If we are unable to efficiently develop our own autonomous vehicle technologies or develop partnerships with other companies to offer autonomous vehicle technologies on our platform in a timely manner, our business, financial condition and results of operations could be adversely affected,” it wrote.

Elsewhere, it flagged its history of net losses and that “we may not be able to achieve or maintain profitability in the future,” while suggesting it may not be able to maintain its market share given intense market competition. The company also notes parts of its business, such as bike-sharing and electric scooters, are relatively new and it’s not clear how those will impact the bottom line. Additionally, evolving laws and regulations could affect how it operates in various markets.

90210 'Revival' Officially Greenlit: Fox Orders 6-Episode Summer Event Series https://briefnews.eu/90210-revival-officially-greenlit-fox-orders-6-episode-summer-event-series/ https://briefnews.eu/90210-revival-officially-greenlit-fox-orders-6-episode-summer-event-series/#respond Wed, 27 Feb 2019 18:31:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/90210-revival-officially-greenlit-fox-orders-6-episode-summer-event-series/

Beverly Hills, 90210 is reuniting with its first love: Fox.

TVLine has learned that the much-ballyhooed quasi-reboot/revival of 90210 has landed at Fox, with the network ordering a six-episode “event series” starring original cast members Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling. Fellow OG Peach Pit-ers Luke Perry and Shannen Doherty are not attached in an official capacity, although Spelling recently expressed confidence that Perry would appear as a guest star.

As first teased by TVLine in January, the new incarnation — which will launch this summer and, like the CW revival, be titled simply 90210 — is an hour-long dramedy that finds the cast playing heightened versions of themselves inspired by their real lives and relationships.

Per the official logline, “Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian and Tori reunite when one of them suggests it’s time to get a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot up and running. But getting it going may make for an even more delicious soap than the reboot itself. What will happen when first loves, old romances, friends and frenemies come back together, as this iconic cast – whom the whole world watched grow up together – attempts to continue from where they left off?”

Mike Chessler and Chris Alberghini, both of whom worked on the first 90210 revival (on the CW) are on board to write and EP. The pair also created So NoTORIous, Spelling’s similarly mockumentary-ish sitcom that aired for one season on VH1 in 2006.

“Beverly Hills, 90210 left an indelible impact on pop culture and an entire generation,” said Fox entertainment president Michael Thorn in a statement. “Its powerful legacy is an important part of our network’s DNA — bold stories not told anywhere else and bigger-than-life-characters — and we’re honored to bring back the beloved original cast members for 90210.”
