Don McCree, vice chairman, Citizens Bank

  • Insider's Banker of the Week series appears in our weekday newsletter, 10 Things on Wall Street.
  • This week we're highlighting Don McCree, vice chairman and head of commercial banking at Citizens Financial Group.
  • McCree was in New York this week for Citizens official launch in the city. The bank snapped up HSBC’s bank branches, and McCree is confident this boost in retail banking will lead to more business in commercial banking.

Don McCree is extremely bullish on New York.

He calls it the "hole in the donut" for Citizens' deeper push into retail banking. That donut comprises markets like New England and Rhode Island — where Citizens thrives — but that gaping hole is the Big Apple.

So when HSBC decided to exit retail banking in New York, McCree and his fellow Citizens executives pounced. Citizens also acquired Investors Bancorp, a deal that complements the purchase of HSBC's East Coast branches.

The deal for 80 HSBC branches in New York, the Washington D.C area, and Florida wrapped up in February this year, and McCree said those branches have been fully rebranded as Citizens. The acquisition of Investors will lift Citizens' total branch count to more than 200, including locations in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and greater New York.

"The visibility, the brand, this can propel the commercial-banking business," McCree told Insider.

It's exactly this rebranding that has McCree, and an army of Citizens bankers, in New York all week. The bank  — in celebration of its official launch in the city — held events throughout Manhattan, including an immersive experience near the Flatiron building. Citizens has also nabbed Eli Manning as an ambassador as it just became the official bank of the New York Giants.

"Have you ever seen a Citizens sign in New York? It's our official entry into the city," he said.

For McCree, who also spearheads commercial banking, the entry into New York's business community is crucial. He admits that additional branding and moves into retail banking are not necessarily going to move the needle with private-equity clients or large corporates, but there's a window of opportunity to tap the city's small-sized firms, whether they are thriving businesses or companies needling their way out of the pandemic.

"There's so many companies, for example, in lower Manhattan looking for a new bank," McCree said. "And I think New York is really starting to come alive again."

Indeed, New York's economy was severely hamstrung by the pandemic, and for many businesses, they are still feeling the pinch from empty office buildings. But as business leaders push their workforces to come back to the office, McCree is confident that the city will recover.

"This is the city that reinvents itself on a constant basis," he said. "This is a time of change and more opportunities."

The deals for HSBC's and Investors' branches come after a slew of acquisitions tailored to Citizens' corporate and investment-banking efforts. The bank bought boutique firms JMP Group and DH Capital to bolster its advisory capabilities, and in total, Citizens has made six purchases in the last five years, Insider previously reported.

"For me, this expands what I already do. No one had ever heard of us. And now, it's about taking a bank that was centered in New England and moving into higher-growth markets like New York, Texas, and California," McCree said.

A Russian diplomat said civilian satellites could be legitimate military targets in a statement that seems to refer to Starlink providing broadband access in Ukraine. Civilian satellites “may become a legitimate target for retaliation,” the Russian official said in a statement to the United Nations’ open-ended working group on reducing space threats.

The quote is from an unofficial English translation of the statement on September 12 by Konstantin Vorontsov, head of the Russian delegation to the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) working group. The translation is provided with other countries’ statements from the session on the UNODA’s meeting website.

The 2020 Video Music Awards are almost upon us (MTV, 8/7c), but because no good party starts without a little pre-game, the Keke Palmer-hosted ceremony is kicking things off early.

This year’s VMA pre-show begins at 6:30 pm ET, and will be streamed live from the VMAs’ official Twitter account. (Click here to check out the stream.) And lest you think MTV is saving all the goods for the actual ceremony, here’s a list of the performers you can expect to see on the stream: Jack Harlow, Chloe x Halle, Tate McRae, Lewis Capaldi, Machine Gun Kelly, Travis Barker and Blackbear.

Heading into Sunday’s ceremony, Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande lead the pack with nine nominations apiece, seven of which are shared for their hit collaboration “Rain on Me.” Other multi-nominated artists include The Weeknd (seven), Billie Eilish (six), Taylor Swift (six) and Megan Thee Stallion (five).

Broadcast (mostly) from New York City’s Barclays Center, this year’s VMAs feature socially distanced performances from Gaga, Grande, Black Eyes Peas, BTS, CNCO, Doja Cat, Maluma, DaBaby, The Weeknd and Miley Cyrus. The main event is also being simulcast on The CW, making this the first time that the VMAs have aired on a major broadcast network.

Hollywood: Ryan Murphy’s Netflix Drama Pulls Back the Curtain on Showbiz in Official Trailer — Watch https://briefnews.eu/hollywood-ryan-murphys-netflix-drama-pulls-back-the-curtain-on-showbiz-in-official-trailer-watch/ https://briefnews.eu/hollywood-ryan-murphys-netflix-drama-pulls-back-the-curtain-on-showbiz-in-official-trailer-watch/#respond Mon, 20 Apr 2020 14:29:12 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/hollywood-ryan-murphys-netflix-drama-pulls-back-the-curtain-on-showbiz-in-official-trailer-watch/

If you thought a career in Hollywood was all lavish parties and adoring fans… well, it’s not not that. But if the trailer for Netflix’s upcoming limited series is any indication, the Tinseltown life is also frustrating, lonely and very, very weird.

Created by Ryan Murphy and frequent collaborator Ian Brennan, Hollywood follows a group of aspiring actors and filmmakers in post-World War II Hollywood as they try to make it in showbiz, no matter the cost.

“Each character offers a unique glimpse behind the gilded curtain of Hollywood’s Golden Age, spotlighting the unfair systems and biases across race, gender and sexuality that continue to this day,” the project’s logline reads. “Provocative and incisive, Hollywood exposes and examines decades-old power dynamics, and what the entertainment landscape might look like if they had been dismantled.”

In the trailer above, screenwriter Archie Coleman (played by newcomer Jeremy Pope) hopes to bring his movie Dreamland to fruition… but things get a little complicated during the production process.

Hollywood boasts a star-studded cast, including several actors that have popped up in Murphy’s previous projects. David Corenswet (The Politician), Darren Criss (Glee), Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Laura Harrier (One Life to Live), Samara Weaving (SMILF), Dylan McDermott (American Horror Story), Holland Taylor (Two and a Half Men) and Patti LuPone (Pose) lead the ensemble.

The drama premieres on Friday, May 1. Check out the official trailer above, then drop a comment with your thoughts!

This Is Us Recap: Rebecca’s Official Diagnosis, and Rockstar Jack Returns https://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-recap-rebeccas-official-diagnosis-and-rockstar-jack-returns/ https://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-recap-rebeccas-official-diagnosis-and-rockstar-jack-returns/#respond Wed, 26 Feb 2020 12:27:05 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/this-is-us-recap-rebeccas-official-diagnosis-and-rockstar-jack-returns/

RELATED STORIES

Three hard-to-handle events transpire in this week’s This Is Us: Randall enters therapy, Rebecca gets an official diagnosis for her declining mental state, and Madison gives some sound relationship advice.

Of the trio of developments, I’m the most shaken by Madison’s sudden conversion into someone with good ideas.* When the heck did that happen? Is it some magical byproduct of her tryst with Kevin? And while we’re on the topic of byproducts of trysts with Kevin, I’ll say it again: She’s totally going to turn out to be his preggo fiancé, isn’t she?

Read on for the highlights of “Clouds.” (And make sure to see what Sterling K. Brown had to say about Randall’s first time at therapy here.)

* Of course I’m kidding, but it’s gallows humor: Rebecca’s diagnosis is one of the worst things a human can hear, and it makes me so sad to even contemplate the suffering she and her family have ahead of them. Anyone else need a hug?

MAKING THE GRADE | In a flashback to when The Big Three were preteens, it’s Report Card Day. Kate is bumming because her first boyfriend just broke up with her. Randall is obsessing about an A-minus. (“I’m putting too much time into Mathletes and not enough time into actual math,” he laments.) And Kevin’s grades are dismal — except for phys ed and art — and he’s not bothered; instead, he tells Rebecca to cough up a promised $ 5 for each A so he can buy baseball cards.

She reluctantly does, then allows him to tag along on her errands, but all he does is complain. “I wish you were more like Sophie’s mom. She’s fun,” he grouses, causing Rebecca to counter that she is too a “fun mom.” But the biggest evidence that she is not, indeed, a fun mom is that she allows him to shame her into taking him to the baseball-card store. There, he spends his newly acquired dough on the remnants of a box of cards, in search of a specific card that will complete his collection: John Candelaria of the Toronto Blue Jays. He and Rebecca tear through a bunch of packs and finally find the card in question, then celebrate.

Meanwhile, Jack and Rebecca disagree on Randall: She thinks his anxiety (though that’s not what they’re calling it) is getting worse, but Jack says their son just needs to blow off steam. So he takes the kid to the track and introduces him to running, aka something he can do “until that worried feeling in the pit of your stomach goes away.” (Side note: I kind of love how Jack just laces up his sneakers while wearing his work pants and that sweater vest.) They do some laps around the oval.

Later, at home, Kate takes a break from moping after her breakup to listen to a sage, breakfast-related metaphor about her nascent love life: “First boyfriends are kind of like first waffles,” Jack explains after reminding her how he often has to toss the first couple every time he fires up the iron. “You have to kind of get through a few until you get it right.”

this-is-us-recap-season-4-episode-15-clouds-ANALYZE THIS | In the present, at home in Philadelphia, Beth notes that Randall isn’t as chill as she thought he might be after a weekend at the cabin with his siblings. (Side note: She has been around when the three of them spend more than five minutes together, yes?) But the councilman is preoccupied: Rebecca is getting her MRI results in California that afternoon, and he’s got his first therapy appointment that day. Beth is proud. “This is a big step,” she beams, but he says it’s not a big deal.

When Randall arrives at his therapist’s office for the first time, he’s irked that there are no cups at the water cooler. He doesn’t like the art she’s chosen to hang on her walls. And he can’t stand that her coffee maker keeps hissing when drops of the brew hit the sizzling hotplate. He’s anxious and nervous in a way that we haven’t seen very often, but he pulls out all the Randall stops in order to try to control the situation. He dad-jokes. (“So how we doing this, Doc? Is it Good Will Hunting or The Sopranos?”) He downplays his condition, noting that “maybe once every decade things get too overwhelming.” He’s very specific that he’s looking for some coping mechanisms and then he’ll be outta her hair.

The scene is shot from the therapist’s point of view, so we hear — but do not see — her. When Randall launches into his origin story, she cuts him off and mentions that she’s heard his political speeches and knows about his adoption and the fact that he’s a public servant. This makes Randall combative (“It’s like you Googled me,” he says, jaw tight. “Isn’t that against the rules?”) When she asks about his relationship with his mother, things get really rough: Randall angrily says therapy is a “waste of time” and asserts that the entire Pearson family would’ve fallen apart years ago without him. “Would they?” the doctor wonders… and that’s it: Randall storms out, shutting off the offending coffeemaker in his exit.

Back at home, Randall informs Beth that he’s done with introspection, thank you very much. “I know you think I need this,” he starts, but she cuts him off: “Babe, I need this.” She goes on to explain that she’s been carrying pepper spray and taking sleeping pills to make herself feel better after the break-in, but she didn’t share that with him “because I was worried if I laid anything else on you, you were gonna crack.” And unless he gets the help he needs, she can’t tell him what’s really going on in her mind.

The next time we see Randall, he’s back at therapy. (Oh, by the way: That’s Better Things‘ Pamela Adlon playing his therapist.)

this-is-us-recap-season-4-episode-15-clouds-ROCKSTAR JACK IS BACK! | When Kate and Toby finally have a chance to talk after she returns from the cabin, he apologizes for everything he said and calls his weekend with Jack “a godsend.” And in typical Pearson- and Pearson-adjacent fashion, he attempts to make up for his idiocy with a gigantic gesture. This time, it’s making the shed behind the house into a recording studio for Kate… well, mocking it up to look like one, with cardboard boxes standing in for speakers and such. He explains that he’ll replace the fake equipment with real stuff, but Kate interrupts: She appreciates the gesture, but she’s going to need more time to be OK with everything that’s happened.

Just then, Madison texts: She wants to get together for a “Sorry I Shtupped Your Brother” brunch. The meal starts off chilly, but Madison’s earnest apology (and her vows to “Kill Bill” Toby, LadyKryptonite and anyone else who hurt Kate) eventually thaws Kate’s iciness. Madison also plays a thoughtful devil’s advocate when it comes to Kate’s current marital strife: Maybe the music-studio gesture isn’t empty, she suggests, because “is it possible he just took whatever you said to heart?” Madison adds that part of her hook-up with Kevin happened because she feels very comfortable around him; he’s seen her when she’s not at her best. Similarly, “Shouldn’t Toby be able to express his deepest fears without punishment?” Mads asks. “Isn’t that what marriage is?” (Don’t worry: She also spends some time referencing something Kev did to her that had her “literally upside down at one point,” so she hasn’t completely changed.)

Back at home, Kate tells Toby, “I love you, and I’m tired of the me-versus-you.” She asks him to show her the studio again, and is delighted when he points out an area she hadn’t seen before: a mini-music area, aka a “playroom devoted to sound,” for Jack. She happily thanks him. And at the end of the episode, we see a montage of Jack growing up in the studio, which eventually is where he gets his songwriting start.

this-is-us-recap-season-4-episode-15-clouds-THE BAD NEWS | Rebecca passes the time before getting her MRI results by going to a record store with Kevin. While listening to Joni Mitchell’s Clouds album, she remembers when she and Jack unsuccessfully tried to find Mitchell’s old house during their trip west back in the day. One query to Siri is all it takes to find the location now, so Mama Pearson and her son make their way out there. She tells him the story of how Graham Nash wrote “Our House” about a day he and Joni spent at the market and then at home. And because the self-named Carpe Diem Rebecca wants to live in the moment, she tries to talk Kevin into helping her skip her upcoming doctor’s appointment. But he gently says no, and pretty soon they’re sitting with Miguel while the doc gives them the bad news: Rebecca’s mild cognitive impairment likely is due to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Afterward, Rebecca asks Kevin not to treat her any diffrently. “I need the fun. I need the laughs,” she says, adding that she wants to go to the premiere of his movie.

Kevin swings by a baseball card store later that day, spends $ 2 on the Candelaria card he’d sought when he was a teenager, then slips it into his wallet.

Now it’s your turn. What did you think of the episode? Sound off in the comments!

JAG: CBS Eyeing an Official Revival? https://briefnews.eu/jag-cbs-eyeing-an-official-revival/ https://briefnews.eu/jag-cbs-eyeing-an-official-revival/#respond Sat, 13 Apr 2019 07:30:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jag-cbs-eyeing-an-official-revival/

NCIS: LA‘s forthcoming JAG-centric arc may be more than just a nostalgia-fueled sweeps stunt. There’s buzz that the May two-parter — which will find David James Elliott and Catherine Bell reprising their roles as Navy Captain “Harm” Rabb Jr.and Lieutenant Colonel Sarah “Mac” MacKenzie, respectively — is serving as an unofficial backdoor pilot for a JAG revival.

CBS declined to comment for this story, but TVLine has learned that the network is indeed testing the waters for a new edition of JAG that would star Elliott and Bell.

In a recent interview with TVLine, NCIS: LA showrunner R. Scott Gemmill — who cut his teeth as a writer/producer on the original JAG — did not rule out the possibility of a full-fledged revival. “I never say never to anything,” noted the exec, before adding that the ball will ultimately be in CBS’ court. “It’s really up to them. That’s not my call to make.”

Gemmill did point out that the NCIS: LA arc introduces “a really cool [new] permutation” of JAG, adding, “It’s more exciting than just going back with a case where they’re JAG officers still and we get pulled into it. Instead we took a whole different direction.”

Should a fresh JAG series come to fruition, it would bring the franchise full circle seeing as how NCIS original flavor was itself spun off of JAG, starting with a two-part, April 2003 “backdoor pilot” that introduced Mark Harmon’s Gibbs, Michael Weatherly’s DiNozzo, Pauley Perrette’s Abby and David McCallum’s Ducky.

The JAG-themed NCIS: LA arc kicks off Sunday, May 12 and concludes with the procedural’s season finale on Sunday, May 19. (With reporting by Matt Mitovich)

  • Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle Denico Autry was called for a 15-yard taunting penalty on Saturday for his celebratory dance after sacking Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
  • Autry’s dance, which occurred directly in front of the referee, was deemed “suggestive” and thus worthy of a 15-yard penalty.
  • The scene was eerily reminiscent of a popular “Key & Peele” sketch.

The Indianapolis Colts lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 31-13 on Saturday in a game that had few bright spots for the Colts.

The Colts had won 10 of their last 11 games heading into Kansas City, but couldn’t get anything going on Saturday, failing to score an offensive touchdown until the final five minutes of the game and going a dismal 0-9 on third down conversions.

He’s not an official: Macron’s office left red-faced explaining ex-aide Benalla’s luxury trip https://briefnews.eu/hes-not-an-official-macrons-office-left-red-faced-explaining-ex-aide-benallas-luxury-trip/ https://briefnews.eu/hes-not-an-official-macrons-office-left-red-faced-explaining-ex-aide-benallas-luxury-trip/#respond Tue, 25 Dec 2018 15:04:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hes-not-an-official-macrons-office-left-red-faced-explaining-ex-aide-benallas-luxury-trip/

Days before Emmanuel Macron visited French troops in Chad for Christmas, his scandal-plagued former aide Alexandre Benalla traveled to the African country to meet a top official. And the Elysée palace had some explaining to do.

Benalla, who lost his job after his beating of a protester prompted the French president’s ‘Watergate’ scandal, went to Chad in style. He traveled on a private jet with half a dozen people and stayed in a luxury Hilton hotel in the capital N’Djamena. But it was his reported meeting with the brother of the Chadian president Oumar Déby, who is also in charge of country’s Directorate-General of Strategic Reserves, that raised the questions.

When Macron came to Chad on December 22, he had to clarify to Idriss Déby, the Chadian president, that Benalla was in “no way an unofficial or official intermediary.”

“Only the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Yves Le Drian, the diplomatic adviser to the President, Philippe Etienne, and Franck Paris, the president’s Africa adviser, are representing the head of state,” he told Deby, according to his office’s response to Le Monde.

The Benalla affair has arguably been one of the top scandals marring Macron’s presidency in 2018. The former assistant chief of staff and bodyguard assaulted seemingly peaceful demonstrators during the May 1st protests in Paris.

The rogue aide was filmed violently beating a male protester and dragging a woman, all while wearing a police-issue riot helmet. Macron’s office seemingly tried to sweep the incident under the rug, prompting public anger. Several months after being sacked Benalla continued to create embarrassment for his former boss, but also seems to have tried to capitalize on his connections.

During the Chad trip, the Elysée said that “an internal investigation is under way” to establish whether Benalla was able to “take advantage of his position” for his own interests, according to Le Monde.

  • Trump called McGurk a “grandstander” for resigning over Trump’s recent decision to withdraw 2,000 troops from Syria.
  • McGurk reportedly told his colleagues in an email on Friday that he could not in good conscience carry out Trump’s orders to withdraw 2,000 troops.

President Donald Trump on Saturday said he didn’t know Brett McGurk, the top US official leading the fight against the Islamic State group, and called him a “grandstander” for resigning over Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from Syria.

“Brett McGurk, who I do not know, was appointed by President Obama in 2015,” Trump tweeted. “Was supposed to leave in February but he just resigned prior to leaving. Grandstander? The Fake News is making such a big deal about this nothing event!”
