"Avatar" was the biggest movie in the world over the weekend — again.
James Cameron's 2009 sci-fi epic was re-released to theaters ahead of the December debut of its long-awaited sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water." It grossed $ 30.5 million globally, $ 10 million of which came from North America.
The strong box office for the 13-year-old movie is a good sign for "The Way of Water's" chances.
"Avatar" is the biggest movie of all time, now with $ 2.878 billion at the worldwide box office, including $ 770.5 million domestically.
"Avengers: Endgame" briefly topped it in 2019, but "Avatar" reclaimed its crown after a re-release in China last year grossed $ 50 million.
"Avatar" was remastered for this re-release in 4K at a high-dynamic range and with enhanced sound. Imax screenings accounted for 20% of the global gross and 29% of the domestic take.
The lesson here is to never underestimate Cameron, who also directed "Titanic" — which was the world's biggest movie until "Avatar" dethroned it.
"'You know what? I made "Titanic." This building that we're meeting in right now, this new half-billion dollar complex on your lot? "Titanic" paid for that, so I get to do this,'" Cameron told the studio regarding changes it wanted to make to "Avatar," he said in a recent interview with The New York Times. "And afterward, they thanked me."
The theatrical industry has a lot riding on "The Way of Water." After a promising summer, blockbuster tentpoles have been lacking in recent weeks. The only surefire hits coming to theaters the rest of the year are "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" and "The Way of Water."
Because of the movie drought, studios have recently re-released other movies, such as "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Jaws." The former earned $ 6.5 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend in the US, and the latter made $ 3 million in that same period.
"Avatar" was up against the new release "Don't Worry Darling" over the weekend, which topped the US box office with $ 19 million after months of offscreen drama.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' office said that the dozens of migrants that he had flown to the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard are better off than they would have been in Texas after a Texas county sheriff announced that he had launched a criminal investigation into the matter.
Last week, about 50 migrants were taken on two chartered planes from Texas to Martha's Vineyard in a controversial move orchestrated by DeSantis.
The Republican governor's spokesperson Taryn Fenske said in a statement shared with Insider that immigrants were "more than willing" to leave Bexar County, Texas, "after being abandoned, homeless, and 'left to fend for themselves.'"
"Florida gave them an opportunity to seek greener pastures in a sanctuary jurisdiction that offered greater resources for them, as we expected," Fenske said.
Fenske added that unless the Massachusetts National Guard "has abandoned these individuals, they have been provided accommodations, sustenance, clothing and more options to succeed following their unfair enticement into the United States, unlike the 53 immigrants who died in a truck found abandoned in Bexar County this June."
The remarks came in response to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office opening an investigation into the transport of migrants to Martha's Vineyard.
Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, a Democrat, said that the migrants were "lured" with "promises of a better life."
The Bexar County Sheriff's Office said that the migrants "were ultimately left to fend for themselves in Martha's Vineyard."

]]>Come holiday season, they also—compelled by a strange mix of perceived obligation and genuine holiday spirit—sometimes exchange gifts with one another. One common, and frequently awkward, form of this yearly tradition is the Secret Santa, in which participants randomly select a co-worker’s name and then anonymously give a small gift to that person. Plenty of office workers happily channel their holiday cheer into Secret Santa, but a lot of people, even those who don’t exhibit the least bit of grinchiness otherwise, aren’t into it.
“I feel like [my co-workers] can’t really know me well enough to give me a gift that’s meaningful in any sense,” Beatrice Loayza, a 26-year-old writer who has an administrative office job during the day, told me. She said the gifts people in her office get one another tend to be unimaginative, “like a generic piece of clothing or some generic masculine or feminine gift. Everything that’s being exchanged feels a little forced.” A year or two ago, she received a foldable tote bag “in these horrible bright womanly colors” that currently sits, still unused, underneath her desk. Her Secret Santa contributions have been just as half-hearted, she said: “I go and get a bottle of wine 15 minutes before the party or something like that.”
Recently, Loayza’s Secret Santa experience almost went from mediocre to actively unpleasant. “This year, I chose [from a hat] the one person that I legitimately do not like,” she said. “In the past, there’s been times when he’s eaten my lunch.” To get out of this predicament, she pretended to have drawn her own name, which under the rules of Secret Santa necessitates the selection of another name.
[Read: The rise of the remote-work holiday party]
Loayza has participated in her workplace’s Secret Santa exchange, somewhat grudgingly, for five years running. “Because there’s this pseudo-family small-office intimacy to it, it’s very glaring if someone were not to participate,” she told me.
She is not alone in her disenchantment. According to a survey published last month by the British job-listings platform Jobsite, 20 percent of workers in the U.K. would prefer not to have office celebrations, including Secret Santas and gatherings honoring an employee’s promotion or birthday, if they involve financial contributions from employees. Millennials in particular seemed to dislike these festivities, with 73 percent of them reporting that they had at some point spent more than they could afford to on such events, compared with 58 percent of workers overall.
And many people feel they can’t opt out of office-sponsored “fun,” whether it’s organized by the company or by a few jolly employees. “How can you say no to what your company is asking you to do?” wrote Sam Warren, a professor of organization studies and human-resource management at the University of Portsmouth, in an email. “Would it affect your [job] prospects? What does it say about your attitude to being a team player, or your relationship with your co-workers? How can you say no to FUN?”
Warren has studied the dynamics of fun at workplaces, and when employees enjoy themselves with co-workers, she noted, it can make them less stressed and more loyal to their employer. But what management considers to be enjoyable can sometimes make labor uneasy. “Often employees have a ‘work self’ and a ‘personal self’ and it’s uncomfortable to mix the two,” she wrote. “Modern-day work cultures encourage a blurring of boundaries that asks a lot of some employees who would prefer to keep things separate—particularly introverts.”
Last year, The Cut documented several Secret Santa horror stories—one woman said her boss gave her a book of sex tips—and they are indeed awful, but what I heard from those I interviewed were anecdotes of viciously mundane gifting. Kishan Purohit, a 29-year-old consultant in Mumbai, has participated in seven or eight office Secret Santas, and the least inspiring gift he got was a coffee mug with a trite motivational quote on it. “It said ‘Seize the day’ or something,” which he had no use for, not least because “I usually seize my day always.” He gave it away.
In his first years in an office setting, he didn’t mind gift exchanges, but they started to grate on him as he got trapped in a cycle of receiving meaningless paraphernalia (like the mug) and giving boxes of chocolates to near-strangers (“a safe bet”). Several of the Secret Santas Purohit has been involved in were enormous, with 100 people or more giving one another gifts. (Multiple times, the person he was assigned to buy a gift for was someone he’d never interacted with.) He’d rather the company organize a dinner or a community-service event, but Secret Santa persists and, out of fear of being seen as a party pooper, so does Purohit’s participation in it.
Some of the distaste that Rob, a 37-year-old working at a tech company in Amsterdam, has for Secret Santa is also tied to a disappointing gift. One year, “everyone got quite nice, thoughtful gifts, and what I got was a metal sign that said, if I remember correctly, Yeah sure, I’ll solve your problem—just as soon as I’ve solved everyone else’s,” he told me. “I remember thinking, God damn, is this is the impression that people have of me, that I would find this funny?” To make matters worse, there was a policy against pinning things up in Rob’s office. (Perhaps it was intended as home decor?) “It went in the trash,” he said. (Rob requested to be identified only by his first name, because he doesn’t want to hurt his relationships with his co-workers.)
Another grievance of his is that some people adhere to the stated rules and others don’t, completely ignoring spending limits or trying to swap names so that they can get a gift for one of their friends. “Despite the 15-euro limit, at least one person received a Lego set that cost around 100 euros. My desk mate received a paperback book on Christianity—so, a mixed bag,” he told me.
Rob has had it with Secret Santas, and after years of participating in these “theoretically optional” activities, he’s finally opting out now that he feels like he’s established himself socially at work. “I’m just going to let the deadline pass, and if anybody says anything, I’m just going to say I forgot,” he told me.
The times Rob actually enjoyed exchanging gifts with co-workers were when he and some work friends set up their own small Secret Santa. “It was the work equivalent of the WhatsApp group that springs off from the WhatsApp group that excludes the two really annoying people,” he said.
Indeed, “The research on fun at work shows that self-authored fun (fun things people do by themselves) are the only activities that people genuinely find enjoyable,” said Warren, the business-school professor.
One twist, though, is that workers sometimes make their own fun from within the confines of their employer’s prescribed framework. “Often the ‘laughable’ fun program, which people see as a superficial management gimmick, becomes an object of ridicule and self-authored fun itself—so the end result is the same,” Warren said. But if the best part of office Secret Santa is making fun of it, well, that says it all.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said on Wednesday that the e-commerce giant doesn't plan on making its corporate employees return to the office via a company-wide mandate.
"We don't have a plan to require people to come back," he said in an onstage interview at Vox Media's Code Conference in Los Angeles, per CNBC. "We don't right now. We're going to proceed adaptively as we learn."
Jassy noted that most Amazon corporate employees are working on a hybrid work schedule and that certain sections of the company, like its hardware and creative teams, are in the office more often, per CNBC.
"I do think there are some things that are harder to do remotely. I think it's a little harder to invent remotely," he said, per the outlet.
"At the end of the day, we have to deliver the right results for customers, and people understand whether they work remotely or in an office that that has to be the number one priority," he said, CNET reported. "And so we're trying lots of experiments, and we'll see over the next year."
In contrast to Amazon's approach, other high-profile companies have required employees to report for work at their offices at least several days a week.
Since April, Google has mandated that its employees in several US locations return to the office at least three days a week, with the option to explore options like "work from anywhere" weeks. Last month, Apple ordered employees to work in the office at least three days a week, inciting a petition from office workers who said they've shown throughout the COVID-19 pandemic that they can produce "exceptional work" from home.
Investment banks such as Citigroup and Deutsche Bank also offer hybrid work schemes to their employees.
On the other hand, Meta — which was then still called Facebook — announced last April that its employees could continue fully working from home even after the pandemic.
Jassy had previously called off Amazon's company-wide plan to require corporate and tech workers to be in the office at least three days a week starting in January.
"At a company of our size, there is no one-size-fits-all approach for how every team works best," Jassy said in October. He said the decision to work from home or in the office would be left to individual teams.
His declaration on Wednesday echoed his comments in January that remote work would continue to be a part of people's lives even after the pandemic. Jassy had referred to how companies have struggled to get all of their employees to return to the office after the Omicron variant prompted another bout of infections and temporary closures.
"I think people will come back in bigger numbers than before, but I think it's not going to look like what it was before," he said, Fortune reported.

"Top Gun: Maverick" and "Spider-Man: No Way Home," movies that were first released months ago, scored wins at the box office this Labor Day weekend, bolstered by a $ 3 ticket promotional deal meant to lure in moviegoers during a historically quiet weekend.
As of Monday morning, "Top Gun: Maverick," first released in May, topped the charts, grossing an estimated $ 7.9 million from Friday through Monday, Deadline reported. "Spider-Man: No Way Home," which originally came out in December 2021, was re-released as an extended cut. It came in third at the box office behind "Bullet Train," grossing $ 6.6 million over the 4-day period, according to data compiled by The Hollywood Reporter.
"Spider-Man" was initially projected to top the charts for the weekend but dropped to third as studios reported more data.
Another re-release success story from the weekend was "Jaws," which earned just over $ 3 million for the 4 days. "Jaws" first opened in theaters in 1975.
Movie attendance spiked over the weekend, bolstered by the industry's first "National Cinema Day," a one-day event that featured heavily discounted tickets at more than 3,000 movie theaters across the US. The $ 3 deal helped movie theaters break an attendance record for 2022, drawing in 8.1 million moviegoers.
Still, with few new movies at this point in the summer, industry insiders said the weekend was largely an opportunity for theaters to show previews of future releases to customers.
"August and September is typically a slow time," John Fithian, head of the theatre association, told Insider. "But people miss that there are good movies coming out in the fall. We have a lot of good stuff coming."

At his first rally since the FBI searched Mar-a-Lago, Trump briefly fixated on the Meta chief executive.
Former President Donald Trump said at a Saturday rally that Meta executive Mark Zuckerberg joined him for dinner at the White House "last week," despite having been out of office for more than a year and a half.
At a Pennsylvania rally supporting senate candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz and gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano, the first since the FBI searched his Mar-a-Lago residence, Trump briefly fixated on the chief executive of Facebook's parent company.
"Last week, the weirdo — he's a weirdo — Mark Zuckerberg came to the White House, kissed my ass all night," Trump said during the speech, going on to mimic their alleged conversation: "'Sir, I'd love to have dinner, sir. I'd love to have dinner. I'd love to bring my lovely wife.' All right, Mark, come on in. 'Sir, you're number one on Facebook. I'd like to congratulate you.' Thank you very much, Mark. I appreciate it."
Trump has previously made similar comments about Zuckerberg. Last year, following his suspension from Facebook, he said the executive "used to come to the White House to kiss [his] ass" and called Zuckerberg "sick" for deplatforming him.
In Saturday's campaign speech, Trump added: "Well, Mark Zuckerberg confessed that in 2020, the FBI went to Facebook and the media and gave them the false narratives that the Hunter Biden laptop from hell was Russian disinformation, even though they knew that was not true. So they went in they said it was Russian disinformation, by the way."
The former president was referring to Zuckerberg's comments this week on Joe Rogan's podcast that a New York Post story about Hunter Biden's laptop "fit the pattern" of polarizing content, including "Russian propaganda" the FBI had warned the company about. He said the laptop story had several red flags that raised questions about its authenticity and, in response, Facebook limited its reach on the site's news feeds for five or seven days.
Representatives for Trump did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

In a now viral video, comedian Sandy Honig recorded herself uncontrollably vomiting around an Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield office park after the insurance company denied coverage for a procedure that would help alleviate her stomach-churning symptoms.
Honig, who suffers from partial paralysis of her stomach due to a condition called gastroparesis, cannot normally digest food and has been near-constantly nausated for the past three years since the onset of her symptoms. Almost anything she eats, she throws up.
"It's hard to get up in the morning when the first thing you have to do is drink a cup of water, and that makes you sick," Honig told Vice News.
A common treatment for the condition are Botox injections, which help patients more easily digest food by relaxing the part of the stomach connected to the small intestine. The $ 3,000 treatment provides relief for several months at a time.
After being denied coverage for the injections in January — Honig told NBC News Anthem determined they were "medically unnecessary" — Honig, who is a writer for Three Busy Debras on Adult Swim and HBO Max, found herself angry enough to act against the health insurance giant in the nearly 3-minute video.
"I mean, this video was just made from complete rage," she told Teen Vogue.
The clip shows Honig at an office park where she repeatedly vomits while discussing her plight and the insurance appeals process with passers-by. She attempted to show up directly to the Anthem offices, but was denied entry without an employee badge: "Even if I'm a member of the Anthem family?" Honig asks an employee in the video.
On camera in front of the Anthem office, Honig vomits into an envelope she joked contained her appeals letter to the insurance company — "relevant documentation," she called it — and seals it up. She told Vice News she did not actually send the envelope and her doctor mailed her real appeal letter.
In addition to denying her procedure, the company allegedly also called the police on Honig following the stunt.
"It was such a lovely surprise to get a visit from two men armed with guns and batons in my own home," Honig says in the video, showing two Los Angeles Police Department officers who arrived at her home to perform a wellness check on her.
Honig told Teen Vogue she originally thought the officers were there to ticket her for trespassing, but actually were called to perform the check to ensure she was not a danger to herself or others.
"It was very interesting," Honig told Teen Vogue. "I was playing with putting this in the video, but it's actually way too complicated — I don't have a concise way of explaining it, but what the cop was telling me was that if I were to harm myself, [the insurance company] could be liable because they had evidence that I was, you know, acting erratically. They were basically covering their own ass by calling the cops on me. It was just insane."
Representatives for Anthem did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, but told NBC News the insurance company denied the Botox injections to "ensure Ms. Honig gets the right treatment for her particular condition."
"Our clinical team has carefully reviewed her case and our medical policies, and the existing medical evidence does not support the treatment she is requesting for her condition," Anthem told NBC News. "Therefore, it is not a covered benefit under the family's health plan."
"Health insurance is fucking made-up," Honig told Vice News.
A representative for Honig did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Looks like the next edition of Now That’s What I Call Music is going to be a must-have for TV fans.
In a riff of the popular NOW music franchise, SNL delivered its own version entitled, Now That’s What I Call Theme Songs Sung by Stars, allowing myriad series leads (or facsimile thereof) to perform original lyrics to some of TV’s most classic tracks (watch the full clip below).
The short began with Chloe Fineman giving us her best Nicole Kidman, as she crooned The Undoing‘s opening tune, “Dream a Little Dream of Me.” (“Did you notice my coat?” she asks.) From there we were served new renditions of the songs from Bridgerton (by way of Lady Whistledown aka Julie Andrews), The Mandalorian, The Queen’s Gambit, Succession and more, as Cecily Strong, Kate McKinnon, Beck Bennett, Melissa Villaseñor, Pete Davidson, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat and all stepped in to exercise their vocal talents.
But in the clip’s final hurrah, first-time host John Krasinski sang the “long-lost lyrics” to The Office‘s theme song, which began with a whole lot of “Scrantons.” He then did Dunder Mifflin proud, singing alongside the actual opening credits, which basically turned into a narration of the accompanying video (“That’s a calculator!”).
That wasn’t the night’s only fun tidbit for Office fans. In Krasinski’s opening monologue, he was consistently interrupted by “Office fans” Kenan Thompson, Moffat, Davidson and Ego Nwodim, who neglected to ask any real questions but rather used it as a chance to repeatedly call the actor “Jim.” The bit culminated in a kiss between “Jim and Pam,” with SNL‘s own Pete Davidson subbing in for Jenna Fischer. (Watch that full monologue here.)
What was your favorite skit from SNL‘s return? Grade the episode in the poll below, then tell us your thoughts in the comments!

The Office saved Jim’s most elaborate prank on Dwight for last — and now, we finally get to see it.
In celebration of the comedy’s move from Netflix to Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming service has released an unaired cold open, which was cut from the 2013 series finale for time.
The five-minute scene, embedded below, finds Jim and Pam collaborating — and spending several hours training a black cat — to convince Dwight that the Matrix films are now his reality. We won’t spoil the prank’s result for you, but in addition to the well-behaved cat, the stunt includes a Dunder Mifflin warehouse employee and his identical twin, intimidating men stationed at Erin’s reception desk, and security guard Hank (the late Hugh Dane) channeling Laurence Fishburne.
And though the Matrix prank is among Jim’s most detailed and time-consuming jokes on Dwight, we’ll leave you to decide how it stacks up against other pranks like Jim’s “Casino Night” telekinesis, his Pavlovian Altoid experiment and his unforgettable Dwight impersonation, all of which made our list of The Office‘s best cold opens ever.
All nine seasons of The Office are streaming on Peacock as of Friday; the first two seasons are available for free, while Seasons 3-9 are only accessible to Peacock Premium subscribers, who can also view bonus content like extended “superfan episodes,” behind-the-scenes footage, curated episode collections and The Office Zen, a channel providing 24/7 ambient noise for viewers working from home.

Would you have watched a show focused on Buffy‘s Faith? How about one in which The Office‘s Dwight runs a farm? Or a teen drama starring Brittany Snow and Krysten Ritter as a pair of Gossip girls in 1980s Los Angeles? So. Would. We.
That’s what makes this gallery so bittersweet. It’s a reminder of 10+ promising spinoff concepts that tragically never made it to series. Some were presented as backdoor pilots, while others were merely ideas bandied around by the series’ creators, but they were all very real possibilities.
And we understand that spinoffs are tricky. On one hand, some of today’s most celebrated series (i.e. The Good Fight and Better Call Saul) are byproducts of pre-existing shows. On the other hand — and it’s really big hand — an ill-conceived spinoff can tarnish a character’s legacy and alienate a previously loyal fandom. (Raise your hand if you still suffer from Joey-related night terrors.)
But the one thing that all of those shows, both good and bad, have in common is that they were given a chance. (And before you ask us why we didn’t include Gilmore Girls‘ Jess-centric spinoff on our list, just know that it was considered… and quickly vetoed.)
Browse our gallery of nixed spinoffs we wish had been ordered to series — you can click here for direct access — then drop a comment with your own picks below. Which would-be spinoffs would you add to our list?
