Office of the President of Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is moving to overtake Russia from the inside out.
Russia's seven-month effort to conquer its neighbor, Ukraine, has recently been marked by a partial military mobilization, the country's first since World War II, NBC News reported.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's mobilization effort impacts 300,000 reservists — many of whom are going to great lengths to avoid being drafted. Some have even headed to the border, despite facing up to 10 years in prison for desertion.
In a video address late on Friday Ukraine time, Zelenskyy said he seeks to "sabotage" Russia's unprovoked efforts to conquer the country.
"If you get into the Russian army, then sabotage any enemy activity, interfere with any Russian operations, give us all important information about the occupiers: their bases, headquarters, ammunition depots," Zelenskyy said, addressing Russsian conscripts.
The mobilization effort comes after Ukrainian forces reclaimed much of Kharkiv, pushing Russian troops to hide amongst locals or retreat.
Russian troops are reportedly demoralized as their numbers wane. The Pentagon estimates Russian forces have faced anywhere between 70,000 and 80,000 casualties. Many Russians have grown to condemn the war as protests — and more than 1,000 arrests — ensue across the country.
In a Saturday address, Zelenskyy urged Russian forces to surrender, guaranteeing their safety.
"It is better to surrender to Ukrainian captivity than to be killed by the strikes of our weapons, absolutely fair strikes, as Ukraine defends itself in this war. We defend the brightest — we defend our lives, our children, our freedom," he said, according to his website.
"Russian commanders do not care about the lives of Russians — they just need to replenish the empty spaces left by the dead, wounded, those who fled or the Russian soldiers that were captured," the Ukrainian President added.
British and US officials argue that Putin's latest war efforts — including the mobilization effort and threatening the use of nuclear weapons — could mean his invasion is not going as planned.

In mice, the BA.5-targeting bivalent booster now rolling out nationwide did an equally good job at thwarting the BA.5 omicron subvariant as the bivalent booster targeting its predecessor, BA.1, which US regulators passed on.
That’s according to a pre-print study—which hasn’t been peer-reviewed or formally published—authored by researchers at Moderna and Washington University School of Medicine.
Although the study is still a preprint and only involved mice, it provides some of the first head-to-head data comparing the two omicron-targeting booster options considered for this fall—one of which is currently going into arms across the US. And the findings may raise questions about the US booster strategy.

A Moscow-based think tank with ties to Russia's military establishment is offering a cash reward — one bigger than what most soldiers make in a year — for the capture "by any means" necessary of a cutting-edge robotic vehicle that is being used to assist in the evacuation of wounded civilians in Ukraine.
Dubbed ThEMIS, the remotely controlled, unmanned ground vehicle is manufactured by an Estonian defense contractor, Milrem Robotics. A spokesperson for the company told the defense publication Janes that at least one unit has already been delivered to Ukraine, where it is being used to carry medical aid and transport injured civilians.
According to the company, the system, which can carry up to 1,650 pounds, can also be "rapidly configured from having a transport function to being weaponized," enabling it to be used in combat operations. Promotional literature emphasizes its ability to transport battlefield casualties — as well as mortar rounds and other munitions.
Milrem Robotics did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether it intends to deliver a combat version of the system to Ukraine. More than a half-dozen members of NATO, including France, Germany, and the United States, have acquired versions of the THeMIS platform.
Russia apparently does not want to be left out.
Business Wire
"The conflict in Ukraine has demonstrated that modern warfare is unthinkable without the widespread use of unmanned vehicles," Ruslan Pukhov, director of the Moscow-based Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, said in a statement to Insider. Unfortunately, he said, in Russia "we are lagging behind."
To catch up, the think tank is offering one million rubles, or more than $ 16,000, to anyone in the military or law enforcement who captures a THeMIS robotic vehicle mostly intact and delivers it to the defense ministry, a recent CAST blog post said. For comparison, a person who signs a three-year contract to serve in the Russian military earns an annual salary of just over $ 13,000, according to The Washington Post, and conscripts make less than $ 25 a month.
"If it is possible to obtain information about foreign developments, this should certainly be done, by any means," Pukhov said. "The platform being sold to Ukraine is a basic model, but even if we can study it, it will do us good."
Jeffrey Edmonds, a former CIA analyst who now works as a Russia expert at the Center for Naval Analyses, told Insider that CAST should not be seen as a direct arm of the Kremlin, although its researchers' views are generally consistent with the line being pushed by Moscow.
"That being said, the head of CAST has very deep ties with the military establishment," he noted.
In 2007, Pukhov was named a member of the Public Council under the Russian Defense Ministry. He told Insider that his ultimate goal is to supply better unmanned systems to the Russian Army. "And in combat conditions," he said, "the capture and study of systems and platforms used by the enemy is one of the main ways" to do so.

Fans may be excited for the April 19 return of 9-1-1 (8/7c) and 9-1-1: Lone Star (9/8c), but after watching Fox’s just-released teasers for each show, you might not be so eager for their stories to progress.
First up, 9-1-1‘s teaser offers us our first look at the arrival of Maddie and Chimney’s baby, as the mother-to-be is rushed from her desk to the hospital. (“It’s all happening so fast!”)
We also get a heartbreaking glimpse of baby Nia being taken from Hen and Karen (“They’re tearing our family apart!”), as well as a fed-up Athena reacting to multiple casualties caused by a drunk driver.
Check that out below:
Over on Lone Star, we pick up with the aftermath of Judd and Grace’s car crash, with Marjan asking the question on every viewer’s mind: “What the hell happened?!” And the fact that Owen says they were in the water “too long” is doing nothing to sway our concerns for the couple.
As showrunner Tim Minear previously told us, “The premiere will pick up 18 years ago, not right where we left off. It actually is kind of [a ‘begins’ episode] for Judd and Grace. It’s the story of how they met, how they fell in love and what they mean to each other. We’ll also tell you what happened when they went off the bridge, and who — if anyone — survives.”
Watch that teaser below:

David Boreanaz has offered a pledge of public support to Charisma Carpenter, just days after his former costar detailed the “toxic” and “hostile” abuse she allegedly suffered under Buffyverse auteur Joss Whedon.
Though Carpenter — who played Cordelia Chase on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff Angel — has alluded to her experiences with Whedon in the past, on Feb. 10 the actress posted an 830-word missive on social media, elaborating on her claims and recalling Whedon’s “history of being casually cruel,” his creation of “hostile and toxic work environments,” what the Angel showrunner allegedly said and did to her during her real-life pregnancy, and how she coped with it all, “at times, destructively.”
“I am here for you to listen and support you,” Boreanaz said on Twitter. “Proud of your strength.”
Soon after, Carpenter responded: “I know you’re there for me, David. I appreciate all you’ve done to demonstrate that support privately as well. Especially since Wednesday,” she wrote. “Thank you so much.”
Fellow Angel vet Amy Acker also released a statement on Twitter, which read: “I will always be proud of the work we all did on Angel. While I personally had a good and professional experience, it is heartbreaking to hear that not everyone did. I do not condone any actions that made anyone feel hurt or uncomfortable, and I offer love and support to everyone who is speaking out to tell their truths.”
Carpenter went public with her abuse allegations partially in support of actor Ray Fisher. Fisher, who played Cyborg in the superhero film Justice League, has accused Whedon of, among other things, “gross, abusive, unprofessional and completely unacceptable” behavior upon picking up the directing reins from Zack Snyder.
Carpenter’s statement, in part, read: “Joss Whedon abused his power on numerous occasions while working on the sets of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. While he found his misconduct amusing, it only served to intensify my performance anxiety, disempower me, and alienate me from my peers. The disturbing incidents triggered a chronic physical condition from which I still suffer. It is with a beating, heavy heart that I say I coped in isolation and, at times, destructively.” (Read her full statement here.)
In the wake of Carpenter’s post, fellow Buffyverse alumni — including Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy), Michelle Trachtenberg (Dawn), Amber Benson (Tara) and Eliza Dushku (Faith) — published their own comments in support of their former castmate.
“While I am proud to have my name associated with Buffy Summers, I don’t want to be forever associated with the name Joss Whedon,” Gellar said. “I stand with all survivors of abuse and am proud of them for speaking out.”
Shortly after Gellar issued her statement, Trachtenberg reposted her TV sister’s comments alongside the following caption: “Thank you @sarahmgellar for saying this. I am brave enough now as a 35 year old woman…. To repost this. Because. This must. Be known. As a teenager. With his not appropriate behavior.” Trachtenberg later edited the post to add, “Very. Not. Appropriate. So now. People know. What Joss. Did. The last. Comment I will make on this. Was. There was a rule. Saying. He’s not allowed in a room alone with Michelle again.”

“Quantum mechanics, quinoa wraps, Queen Bey — we’ve missed so much!” The Warner Brothers (and the Warner Sister!) are back to explore the trappings of the modern world in the official trailer for Hulu’s Animaniacs reboot.
And you’ll be happy to know that Yakko, Wakko and Dot are just as self-aware as ever, opening the trailer by explaining that “reboots are symptomatic of a fundamental lack of originality in Hollywood.” That is, until Hulu offers them a ludicrous amount of money to return to TV after 22 years away.
We’re then given a glimpse at some of the trio’s impending shenanigans, including a pretty pony with an ugly prediction, the siblings’ anime-style transformation, and what appears to be a giant baby Donald Trump cyclops. Because why not.
The two-minute sneak peek also offers a first look at the return of Pinky and the Brain, the former of which attempts to navigate the world of online dating, only to encounter an endless stream of literal catfish.
Our only complaint? There’s no sign of Animaniacs‘ beloved supporting characters — Hello Nurse, Slappy Squirrel, the Goodfeathers, Rita and Runt, Buttons and Mindy, Minerva Mink, etc. — leading us to believe that they won’t feature into these initial 13 episodes. (Fingers crossed we’ll seem in the already-ordered second season.)
Hit PLAY on the video above for your first look at Hulu’s Animaniacs reboot, premiering Nov. 20, then drop a comment with your thoughts below.

You might know Michelle Buteau from her role as harried orthopedic surgeon Bree Washington on BET+’s First Wives Club. Or you might recognize her as the host of the isolation-filled reality competition The Circle. But in her new Netflix comedy special, Michelle Buteau: Welcome to Buteaupia, Buteau herself offers up a new way to look at her personal brand: “an achievable Beyonce for government workers.”
The joke is one of many high points in the hour-long special, which is now streaming. Other topics covered in Buteau’s set include: Jennifer Lopez (with whom she just finished filming the upcoming Marry Me), Buteau’s twin toddlers (she and husband Gijs van der Most welcomed Hazel and Otis via surrogate in 2019) and TV shows (90-Day Fiancé and The Crown both get name-checked).
Buteau shot Welcome to Buteaupia in New York City’s midtown in 2019; after months of coronavirus lockdowns and social distancing, watching a packed and laughing audience feels rather strange — which was the first topic we covered when TVLine recently chatted with Buteau.
TVLINE | Watching everyone in that room, laughing — it feels like we’re peering at a bygone era. Does it feel as odd to you?
Oh my God. It feels so weird. It feels joyful — it’s definitely a celebration — but it also feels like I’m mourning that time again, because it does feel like sort of a death and that’s the world that we knew once. But I am so glad I got to do it, and I picked March 1 [for the taping] because it was my grandma’s birthday. I’m like, that’s so weird that day came up. Wow, thank you, Grandma, for definitely looking out for your girl on the other side. [Laughs] I really want it to feel like a night out in New York. It probably feels like the last night out, but yeah, I’m so glad I got to do it. I did everything I wanted to do, you know? I said all the things I wanted to say, and I even did some improve, which I love, messing with my audience and my fans.
TVLINE | What venue were you at?
Every comedian is like, “My special has to be a huge theater with maroon curtains and balconies,” and when I started looking at specials and looking at venues I’m like, “Oh, I really want to stand apart and just look like a dirty night at the disco. Like, it’s definitely going to smell like Drakkar and bleached vomit. And you’re just like, “Whoa, this is New York City, I’m cool.” [Laughs] So, we filmed at this place called Sony Hall which was originally The Roxy back in the diz-zay, right in the heart of midtown Manhattan. Whatever state you’re coming from, whatever borough you’re coming from, everybody knows midtown is where Broadway is. And it’s a night out, honey, so wear your good shoes and return them the next day.
TVLINE | Speaking of which, the gold sequin suit you wear in the special is fabulous. You mention during the show that it’s borrowed. Was it, actually?
I still don’t know! The world shut down and I don’t know where we’re supposed to return it! But shout out to my wardrobe stylist Annie Caruso. I mean, when you meet someone that just sees your body as the drumstick that it is and can fit it like a glove, I’m just like, thank you so much. I told her I really wanted to serve boss Diana Ross, plus-size Beyoncé, you can make my chest look like disco balls. And she was like, “OK.” I’m sure a lot of people are just like, “I want something elegant and timeless,” and I’m like, “Make my body look like a disco ball.” She’s like, “Cool, cool, cool, cool, cool,” and she definitely achieved it, and I’m so excited.
TVLINE | TV comes up a lot in the special. Tell me what you’re watching right now, especially since we’ve all been at home so much.
You know, I’m sorry, but I have to go hard for 90 Day Fiancé, because I do love TV… I love production, I love all the things. And I really love when people are being their most authentic selves. You know, I feel like I also love reality and documentaries… But I love 90 Day Fiancé because I really feel like these dummies just have fallen in love, want to make it work, definitely sometimes want a green card, don’t know what to do, really, now they have to fill out paperwork at the embassy. It’s a mess, and I just love people fighting for their love, but like, with everyone around them.
I also love what Netflix is producing. I mean, besides my stuff, LOL, but Love on the Spectrum is such a fascinating watch. Because when we think about people on the spectrum, we always think about kids, and now they’re growing up and they have to move out at some point, and they also want to be in a relationship, and what happens when they want to do that? I think it’s so important to think about the forgotten.
Also, oh, [Insecure‘s] Issa Rae and [I May Destroy You‘s] Michaela Coel. Any content created by Black women, I lay down for it. I stand up for it. I downward dog for it.
TVLINE | Let’s talk about The Circle, which has been renewed. Are you back for Season 2?
I am back for Season 2. We’re going to be filming it shortly. And I’m so excited, and I love that the show is also COVID-friendly. You know? It is truly about quarantine. And also about what social media says about you, what you look for and how you present yourself. It’s such an amazing project to be a part of, because we have to learn how to exist with social media, you know? I’m always fascinated by the people who are just like, “I hate it, I don’t want it.” But then they’ll get a like and you see their eyes light up. They’re like, “Interesting, I have a connection.” I’m like, “See? That’s how it goes.”
TVLINE | And First Wives Club Season 2? At the end of the first season, Bree and her husband had decided they were going to work on some stuff — have you shot anything yet?
We haven’t shot any Season 2 yet, although it’s been written. We are actually going to get to production later this year and figure out how to do it in a COVID-safe environment obviously, but I love BET’s dedication to making the show happen because it’s been a while. But it’s still popular, it’s streaming, people are still discovering it. It is a damn dream working with Jill Scott and Ryan Michelle Bathe, and just working with Black moms in general because they get stuff done, and they are so talented. I mean, black Hollywood royalty, black music royalty, we’re all royalty. [Laughs]

After feeling the heat from his co-stars, 9-1-1 star Ryan Guzman has taken to social media to address his defense of using racial slurs.
In an Instagram video posted on Monday, Guzman — who plays firefighter Eddie Diaz on the Fox procedural — first said, “I do not condone the use of the N-word by any non-Black person. That includes all Latinos. That’s not our word.” (He also pointed out that stars like Cardi B and Fat Joe have used the word in the past without experiencing the same backlash.) He added that when he used the word “slurs,” “I came from an angry place. I couldn’t think straight, and I misspoke.” He was defending his fiancée Chrysti Ane and his one-year-old son, he said, who were facing death threats and “foul-ass language” from people online.
He meant to say “stereotypes” instead of “slurs,” he went on to say, reiterating that “amongst friends, can friends make fun of each other? Yes.” But he added, “I’m not here to bring anybody down,” before underlining the fact that his fiancée used the word years ago, when she was a teenager: “I think she’s grown as a woman.” He went on to say: ‘I apologize to those that I have offended and misrepresented myself by using the wrong term… I will continue to grow, and continue to help out the community.”
The controversy began when Guzman defended his fiancée in an Instagram Live on Sunday after old tweets of hers were unearthed in which she used the N-word. Guzman stated that he and his friends of other ethnicities “call each other slurs all the time. We don’t get butthurt at all because we know the actual person. We know who each other are.” Guzman’s 9-1-1 co-star Oliver Stark condemned Guzman’s words, saying “there is absolutely no excuse for the use of the N-word… I absolutely don’t agree with it being used by anyone else under any circumstances.”
Aisha Hinds, who plays firefighter Hen on 9-1-1, tweeted in response as well: “How I FEEL daily is a perpetual state of GRIEF. There’s sadly no version of this indefensible discourse that doesn’t exacerbate that grief. There’s legions of learned behaviors that need to be named and neutered so we don’t continue to give life to them. May we know & DO BETTER.”

Snowpiercer‘s four-and-a-half year journey to the small screen ends on Sunday, May 17, when it pulls into the proverbial station at TNT. When all is said and done, was it the little engine that could? Or not quite?
What you get out of TV’s Snowpiercer largely depends on what you expect from it. Yes, it is an adaptation of the lauded 2013 film of the same name, which starred Chris Evans and was directed by future Oscar winner Bong Joon-ho, as well as the 1982 French graphic novel Le Transperceneige. But it tells a distinct story set in that same world, where seven years after an attempt to “fix” global warming instead turned the planet into an unlivable ice ball, the remainder of humanity circles the globe aboard the titular 1,001-car train.
As in both pieces of source material, class warfare is a dominant theme, seeing as the Snowpiercer is strictly, brutally segregated by class — with the last car, the “tail,” densely populated by people who literally fought to illegally board the train before its departure, without tickets.
But whereas the film purposely paced out its reveals of the perks availed the front cars (as Evans’ rebellion leader broached carriage upon carriage), the TV series’ premise allows for a more immediate exposure to the third-, second- and first-class sections. Daveed Diggs (Hamilton) stars as Andre Layton, a “tailie” whose pre-“freeze” line of work was as a police detective. As such, when a murder threatens to upend the carefully regulated class structure, Layton is enlisted by Hospitality chief Melanie Cavill (A Beautiful Mind’s Jennifer Connelly) to begrudgingly travel up-train to solve the case. In the course of this outsider’s closely monitored investigation, he and we are introduced to the assorted cultures and denizens within each section of the train, including an eclectic community known as The Chains, the (remarkably cavernous) Night Car and the aquarium-like Ocean Car. All the while, Mr. Wilford — the visionary, reclusive creator of the train whose name is uttered with reverence — communicates his decisions and edicts via Melanie.
Other members of the primary cast include — but by no means are limited to! — Alison Wright (The Americans) as Ruth, Melanie’s right-hand woman; Mickey Sumner (Low Winter Sun) as Till, a Brakeman who serves as Layton’s partner; Katie McGuinness (Hollywood) as Josie, an intrepid tailie; Annalise Basso as first-class brat LJ; Sheila Vand (24: Legacy) as Zarah, an old flame of Layton’s/close friend of a murder suspect; Mike O’Malley as Brakeman Roche; and Steven Ogg (Walking Dead) as a tailie whose approach to revolution threatens to be a bit more reckless than Andre’s.
Snowpiercer lumbers out of the gate, and you have to wonder if that is a result of its prolonged, oft-rerouted trip to the screen. Some two years after the film came out and with Bong Joon-ho on board as an EP, the TV series first went into development with Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) as writer. In January 2018, a pilot was ordered to series… though Friedman was replaced as showrunner just weeks later. Scott Derrickson, who directed (and sang the praises of) the original pilot, declined to return for reshoots, citing creative differences with new showrunner Graeme Manson (Orphan Black). (At last year’s Comic-Con, it was revealed that barely any of the original pilot lived on.) In May 2019, the series was curiously bounced from TNT to sister channel TBS… only to be moved back to the drama hub in September.
While Episode 1 overexerts itself juggling multiple storylines (there’s a B-story involving a young tailie that simply vanishes for long stretches), the episodes that follow are more tightly wound as the murder case, which dominates half of the 10-episode season, takes frightful turns. For purists, there are callbacks to several of the film’s more vivid elements, such as the grimy protein bars parsed out to the tailies and the chilling punishment exacted upon those who misbehave. Among the ensemble, Diggs is well-cast as a tailie who ruffles upper-crust feathers; in Episode 4, he has an entertaining sequence that evokes 48 Hours‘ Reggie Hammond raising hell at that honky-tonk. Playing someone more human than Tilda Swinton did in the film, Connelly nicely juggles Melanie’s icy, passengers-facing facade with the MIT and Yale grad’s warmer private life.
Visually, TV’s Snowpiercer is not as claustrophobic as the big-screen version; the individual sets all seem to be as narrow or spacious as they need to be, though always within a certain amount of reason (especially if you are able to buy into the notion of a 1,001-car train). And if the movie ever left you wanting to dive deeper into the various train sections, or learn more about the how of sustaining a society aboard a perpetually moving vehicle, the series (which is already renewed for Season 2) promises to answer such questions.
THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: Spread over at least two seasons, TNT’s Snowpiercer will be a longer, less-rollicking ride than the 2013 film. But its version of a subzero dystopia promises to more richly realized.
