In an increasingly digitized world, brick-and-mortar retailers are facing immense pressure to understand and accommodate their customers’ changing needs, including at the point of sale (POS).

More than two years after the EMV liability shift in October 2015, most large merchants globally have upgraded their payment systems. And beyond upgrading to meet new standards, many major retailers are adopting full-feature, “smart” devices — and supplementing them with valuable tools and services — to help them better engage customers and build loyalty.

But POS solutions aren’t “one size fits all.” Small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) don’t usually have the same capabilities as larger merchants, which often have the resources and funds to adopt robust solutions or develop them in-house. That’s where app marketplaces come in: POS app marketplaces are platforms, typically deployed by POS providers, where developers can host third-party business apps that offer back-office services, like accounting and inventory, and customer-retention tools, like loyalty programs and coupons.

SMBs’ growing needs present a huge opportunity for POS terminal providers, software providers, and resellers. The US counts roughly 8 million SMBs, or 99.7% of all businesses. Until now, constraints such as time and budget have made it difficult for SMBs to implement value-added services that meet their unique needs. But app marketplaces enable providers to cater to SMBs with specialized solutions.

App marketplaces also alleviate some of the issues associated with the overcrowded payments space. Relatively new players that have effectively leveraged the rise of the digital economy, like mPOS firm Square, are increasingly encroaching on the payments industry, putting pricing pressure on payment hardware and service giants. This has diminished client loyalty as merchants seek out the most affordable solution, and it’s resulted in lost revenue for providers. However, app marketplaces can be used as tools not only to build client loyalty, but also as a revenue booster — Verifone, for instance, charges developers 30% of net revenue for each installed app and a distribution fee for each free app.

In this report, BI Intelligence looks at the drivers of POS app marketplaces and the legacy and challenger firms that are supplying them. The report also highlights the strategies these providers are employing, and the ways that they can capitalize on the emergence of this new market. Finally, it looks to the future of POS app marketplaces, and how they may evolve moving forward.

Here are some of the key takeaways from the report:

  • SMBs are a massive force in the US, which makes understanding their needs a necessity for POS terminal providers, software providers, and resellers — the US counts roughly 8 million SMBs, or 99.7% of all businesses.
  • The entrance of new challengers into the payment space has put pricing pressure on the entire industry, forcing all of the players in the industry to find new solutions to keep customers loyal while also gaining a new revenue source.
  • Major firms in the industry, like Verifone and Ingenico, have turned to value-added services, specifically app marketplaces, to not only build loyalty but also giving them a new revenue source — Verifone charges developers 30% of net revenue for each installed app and a distribution fee for each free app.
  • According to a recent survey by Intuit, 68% of SMBs stated that they use an average of four apps to run their businesses. As developers flock to the space to grab a piece of the pie, it’s likely that increased competition will lead to robust, revenue-generating marketplaces.
  • And there are plenty of opportunities to build out app marketplace capabilities, such as in-person training, to further engage with users — 66% of app users would hire someone to train and educate them on which apps are right for their businesses.

In full, the report:

  • Identifies the factors that have changed how SMBs are choosing payment providers.
  • Discusses why firms in the payments industry have started to introduce app marketplaces over the last four years.
  • Analyzes some of the most popular app marketplaces in the industry and identifies the strengths of each.
  • Breaks down the concerns merchants have relating to app marketplaces, and discusses how providers can solve these issues.
  • Explores what app marketplace providers will have to do going forward in order to avoid being outperformed in an industry that’s becoming increasingly saturated.

Regulators begin to tackle the craze for initial coin offerings https://briefnews.eu/regulators-begin-to-tackle-the-craze-for-initial-coin-offerings/ https://briefnews.eu/regulators-begin-to-tackle-the-craze-for-initial-coin-offerings/#respond Thu, 09 Nov 2017 23:53:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/regulators-begin-to-tackle-the-craze-for-initial-coin-offerings/

“I’M GONNA make a $ hit t$ n of money on August 2nd on the Stox.com ICO.” Written in July on Instagram, these words made Floyd Mayweather, a boxer, the first big celebrity to endorse an “initial coin offering”, a form of crowdfunding that issues cryptographic coins, or “tokens”. Stox, an online prediction market, went on to raise more than $ 30m, some of which seems to have gone directly into Mr Mayweather’s pocket. Other VIPs, including Paris Hilton, a socialite, followed suit and endorsed ICOs. But this source of easy cash may now be drying up: on November 1st America’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) warned that such promotions may be unlawful, if celebrities fail to disclose what they receive in return.

The endorsements and the SEC’s attempt to rein them in are the latest episodes of token mania. Virtually unknown a year ago, ICOs are now more celebrated than initial public offerings (IPOs), the conventional way of floating a firm. Over the past 12 months $ 3.3bn has been…

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the government to create laws governing the status of bitcoin, other cryptocurrencies, mining, ICOs, as well as defining everything that relates to digital money by July 2018, according to the Kremlin.

The miners of bitcoin, ethereum, and other virtual currencies will have to register and pay taxes.

Putin also wants regulation of ICOs (initial coin offerings), taking as a basis the practice of initial public offerings (IPOs).

The same position is held by US regulators, In July, the US Securities and Exchange Commission recognized tokens as securities, which means their release must be accompanied by appropriate procedures by qualified investors and registration. Tokens are digital money offered by companies (usually backed by their goods) in exchange for investment.

By December 20, this year the Russian government should create a special “sandbox,” based on the instruments of the Central Bank to test the new financial technologies, products and services.

Earlier this month, Putin said the use of cryptocurrencies poses serious risks that must be taken into account when regulating them.

As cryptocurrencies “are issued by an unlimited number of anonymous sources,” in case of any problems, including “system malfunctions” or the emergence of currency bubbles, there will be no one liable, Putin warned.

To date, cryptocurrencies in Russia are not officially regulated. The Ministry of Finance has suggested introducing mandatory registration of cryptocurrency miners and only to allow legal entities and individual entrepreneurs to participate.

Manias, panics and Initial Coin Offerings https://briefnews.eu/manias-panics-and-initial-coin-offerings/ https://briefnews.eu/manias-panics-and-initial-coin-offerings/#respond Fri, 06 Oct 2017 08:18:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/manias-panics-and-initial-coin-offerings/

EVERY market mania reaches a point when pitches to would-be investors enter the realm of the surreal. So it goes for “initial coin offerings”, or ICOs. A new one by a firm called POW invites Facebook users to claim tokens for nothing; when they later become convertible into other tokens, the first to take advantage of the offer could “become worth $ 124bn…making them the richest person on Earth”, the blurb says. Not a bad return for no money invested and no risk borne. However bizarre, bubbles are hard to resist: no one wants to be the only one of their friends left out. They can also be financially ruinous. But gambling on a craze, even a highly dubious one, can be about more than blind greed.

The ICO boom is an outgrowth of the emerging, occasionally inscrutable world of cryptocurrencies. These are a form of money (bitcoin and ether are examples) used in transactions which are recorded on a distributed public ledger called a blockchain. An ICO is a scheme to raise funds for an…

BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s central bank on Monday banned individuals and organizations from raising funds through initial coin offerings (ICO), saying the practice constituted illegal fundraising.

ICOs have become a bonanza for digital currency entrepreneurs, globally and in China, allowing them to raise large sums quickly by creating and selling digital “tokens” with no regulatory oversight.

Individuals and organizations that have completed ICO fundraisings should make arrangements to return funds, said a joint statement from the People’s Bank of China, the securities and banking regulator and other government departments that was posted on the central bank’s website.

The popularity of coin offerings has surged in China this year, with 65 ICOs and 2.62 billion yuan ($ 394.6 million) raised from 105,000 individuals in the country, state-run Xinhua reported in July, citing data from a government organization that monitors online financial activity.

Ingenium Inline-Four Will Join Land Rover’s Powertrain Offerings for 2018 https://briefnews.eu/ingenium-inline-four-will-join-land-rovers-powertrain-offerings-for-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/ingenium-inline-four-will-join-land-rovers-powertrain-offerings-for-2018/#respond Thu, 15 Jun 2017 16:21:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ingenium-inline-four-will-join-land-rovers-powertrain-offerings-for-2018/ 2017 Land Rover Discovery

–

Change is afoot under the hoods of Land Rover’s smallest crossover SUVs. Both the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque will welcome Jaguar Land Rover’s new family of Ingenium inline-four engines under their stubby snouts for the 2018 model year. These replace a tired and laggy Ford-sourced turbo four currently occupying space under both vehicles’ hoods.

–

While Europeans have access to both gasoline- and diesel-burning Ingenium engines, we in the U.S. probably will be limited to a single, gas-sipping turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. It likely will be offered in two power grades, one rated at 240 horsepower and the other at 290. Those figures could change slightly after the engine is certified for our market. The same basic engine produces 247 horsepower in the 2018 Jaguar XE, XF, and F-Pace and 296 in the 2018 F-type.

–

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

–

Jaguar pairs the engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission; however, it wouldn’t surprise us if the need to mount the engine transversely in the Discovery Sport and the Evoque necessitates the use of the two models’ current nine-speed automatic. Regardless, the Ingenium four-pot incorporates direct fuel injection, a twin-scroll turbocharger, and an integrated exhaust manifold.

–

Other changes to the two compact crossovers include an available set of sport seats for the Evoque and the addition of racier exterior trim on Discovery Sports equipped with the more powerful of the two Ingenium engine options. Dubbed Dynamic by Land Rover, the kit includes larger air intakes in the front bumper that feed more air to the engine, a black grille and black side vents, and trim-specific 20-inch wheels.

–

–

Although Land Rover has yet to formally announce these changes for the U.S.-market Evoque or Discovery Sport, we anticipate that the Ingenium engine as well as both the Evoque’s optional sport seats and the Discovery Sport’s available Dynamic bodywork will make their way to our shores when Land Rover’s North American arm formally unveils the updated 2018 Evoque and Discovery Sport later this year.

The market in Initial Coin Offerings risks becoming a bubble https://briefnews.eu/the-market-in-initial-coin-offerings-risks-becoming-a-bubble/ https://briefnews.eu/the-market-in-initial-coin-offerings-risks-becoming-a-bubble/#respond Fri, 28 Apr 2017 01:51:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-market-in-initial-coin-offerings-risks-becoming-a-bubble/

WOULD you care to invest in Gnosis, a prediction market where users can bet on outcomes of events such as elections? Or in ZrCoin, a project to produce zirconium dioxide, used to make heat-resistant alloys? How about an “immersive reality experience” called “Back to Earth”?

These are just three of a new wave of what are called Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs). Nearly $ 250m has already been invested in such offerings, of which $ 107m alone has flowed in this year, according to Smith+Crown, a research firm. But it was in April that ICOs, or “token sales”, as insiders prefer to call them, really took off. On April 24th Gnosis collected more than $ 12m in under 15 minutes, valuing the project, in theory, at nearly $ 300m.

ICO “coins” are essentially digital coupons, tokens issued on an indelible distributed ledger, or blockchain, of the kind that underpins bitcoin, a crypto-currency. That means they can easily be traded, although unlike shares they do not confer ownership rights. Instead, they often serve as the currency for the project they finance: to pay users for a correct prediction, as does Gnosis; or for the content users contribute. Investors hope that…
