The New York Timesreports California has filed an antitrust lawsuit accusing Amazon of violating both the Cartwright Act and state competition law through its pricing rules. The internet giant is stifling competition by preventing sellers from offering lower prices on other sites, according to Attorney General Rob Bonta. If they defy Amazon, they risk losing buy buttons, prominent listings or even basic access to Amazon's marketplace.

If successful, the lawsuit would bar any contracts deemed anti-competitive and notify sellers that they're free to reduce prices elsewhere. Amazon would also have to pay damages, return "ill-gotten gains" and appoint a court-approved overseer.

In a statement, an Amazon spokesperson said California had the situation "exactly backwards." Third-parties still have control over prices, Amazon claimed, and inclusion in the "Buy Box" space supposedly shows that a deal is truly competitive. The case is similar to a District of Columbia lawsuit. The region's Superior Court dismissed that case in March citing a lack of evidence, but Attorney General Karl Racine is appealing the decision.

Amazon is facing increasing government scrutiny of its practices. The Federal Trade Commission has been investigating issues ranging from major acquisitions through to withheld driver tips, while EU pressure prompted Amazon to revise its seller program and improve third parties' chances of competing with direct sales. The tech firm has balked at these moves, and went so far as to both demand the FTC chair's recusal as well as fight agency requests to interview executives. Don't expect either side to back down any time soon, in other words.

Sellers set their own prices for the products they offer in our store. Amazon takes pride in the fact that we offer low prices across the broadest selection, and like any store we reserve the right not to highlight offers to customers that are not priced competitively. The relief the AG seeks would force Amazon to feature higher prices to customers, oddly going against core objectives of antitrust law. We hope that the California court will reach the same conclusion as the D.C. court and dismiss this lawsuit promptly."

Some pilots were sent a mid-flight bulletin announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday afternoon.

The note, issued through the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System, offered a choice on whether to announce the death of the monarch to crew and passengers on board.

According to an image shared by a British pilot on Twitter, the bulletin read: "ATTN all aircraft. To be read at your discretion it is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this very difficult time. Sent 17592/08."

The pilot, who goes by the username Katie Pilot, did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Britain's longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away in Balmoral Castle on September 8. The news was first announced by the royal family on Twitter, quickly followed by media outlets. 

The pilot said who shared the image said she received the news while flying "somewhere over France," adding it was a "somewhat surreal and extremely sad moment."

She said in a Twitter comment that she opted not to announce the Queen's death to the rest of the plane as the flight had on-board WiFi and the news was already making its way around the cabin.

A pilot on a British Airways flight traveling from Miami to London chose to utilize the plane's announcement system to relay the news. 

In a video taken by a passenger and reported by E! News, the pilot can be heard telling people mid-flight: "This is an incredibly sad day for all of us on British Airways. Our thoughts are with the entire royal family as we grieve her immeasurable loss." 

He can also be heard inviting passengers to hold a moment of silence for the late Queen.

  • Status Money is pioneering a novel approach to personal financial management, effectively sharing some of the referral money with customers that it collects from suggesting credit cards or personal loans. 
  • The startup is one of the first to introduce techniques more akin to video games into the personal finance arena. JPMorgan is among other firms considering similar moves. 

A startup plans to pay you for opening a credit card with a lower rate. Or moving your money into a higher-yielding savings account. Or using a coupon at your favorite retailer. 

The service is the brainchild of Status Money, a relatively new player in an industry led by larger firms like Mint or CreditKarma that recommend credit card offers, high-yield savings accounts or online personal loans within free personal finance software. In return for sharing their data, consumers get access to offers. The tech companies receive what is effectively a referral fee.

Maybe you’re familiar with this scenario: you really want to see a certain movie, but it’s not streaming anywhere online. You just paid rent, so you can’t afford to buy it right now. Maybe, in a moment of desperation, you turn to YouTube to see if a version has been uploaded there. It’s not your best moment, but damn it, you really want to watch that movie.

Now YouTube is offering you an alternative to watching a garbage copy of the movie that only takes up half of the screen because it was uploaded illegally. The world’s largest streaming video platform is now offering legitimate versions of nearly 100 films to audiences for free – movies like The Terminator, Legally Blonde, the first five Rocky films, and Hackers.

AdAge (via The Verge) reports that YouTube quietly rolled out these streaming titles for free last month, and the only catch is that viewers have to watch ads that pop up during the movie. This is a new tactic for YouTube, which has long offered films and TV shows for purchase but never experimented with an ad-supported free model. Rohit Dhawan, YouTube’s director of product management, wouldn’t reveal the deal he’s struck with studios like MGM to offer their movies for free to audiences, but he said the limited selection will be expanding in the future and that advertisers may eventually be able to pay to sponsor a particular movie.

YouTube is seeing competition from places like Tubi, Hulu, Roku, and Amazon, all of which are either currently implementing or developing ad-supported video on demand content, so this seems like a nice way for them to create a way to keep potential audiences engaged on their platform instead of having them go elsewhere.

Right now, there are 99 movies available to stream in the “free to watch” section of YouTube’s Movies & Shows section. There are plenty of bad movies to be found, but here are some of the best titles they have to offer at the moment:

  • Rocky, Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV, Rocky V
  • The Terminator
  • Legally Blonde 1 & 2
  • All Dogs Go to Heaven
  • Grand Piano (an under-seen thriller written by Damien Chazelle)
  • Saved!
  • Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
  • Monsters (Rogue One director Gareth Edwards‘ low-budget theatrical feature debut)
  • Jiro Dreams of Sushi
  • Four Weddings and Funeral
  • Europa Report

There’s also a documentary called With Great Power…The Stan Lee Story that’s presumably available because of the comic book legend’s recent death. And I’d highly recommend rewatching Rocky IV if you have an interest in seeing Creed II, because the sequel makes some direct references to it that are better appreciated if Rocky IV is fresh in your mind.
