The series which first aired in February 1973 is being investigated by the BBC after an episode was repeated on BBC Two and a viewer complained about the language used. Before the episode aired, the BBC shared a warning, telling viewers the instalment may contain outdated language. The episode in question saw Frank Spencer comment: “I’m the chief of the pixies, I’m the friend of all the little boys and girls.” “Oh no you’re not, you’re a p**f,” a boy yelled at Frank. Frank responded: “I beg your pardon, block your ears!” A complaint from a viewer led the BBC to investigate but an internal watchdog decided it did not breach editorial guidelines. READ MORE: Dick Strawbridge on Escape to the Chateau spin-off with son James “But you’re sitting there and it’s absolutely… really stressful.” Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em ran from 1973 until its third series in 1978 and returned in 2016 for a Sports Relief special. It’s not the only BBC series to face backlash in recent months. Little Britain, Blackadder and The League of Gentleman have also come under fire for the language used. The BBC was also slammed in January after they aired Grease and viewers complained John Travolta’s character Danny was racist, homophobic and used bullying language. The 1978 classic is one of the most popular films but when it aired on BBC One on Boxing Day, it was slammed by viewers with many viewers writing movements such as #MeToo. One viewer posted on Twitter: “The drive-in/botched make-out session between Danny and Sandy hasn’t aged well. Film kinda glides right into song (“Sandy”) before viewers register the date rapey vibe of the scene they just saw #Grease.” Another commented: “Ahhh man. Just watching #Grease one of my favourite films and it’s so of its time. Misogynistic, sexist and a bit rapey.” A third shared: “Grease is far too sexist and overly white and should be banned from the screen. It is nearly 2021 after all.” Titled The Nativity, the BBC‘s festive special of The Goes Wrong Show aired at primetime back on December 22 at 7pm. The half-hour Christmas play saw a handful of amateur performers take to the stage to deliver a take on the classic nativity associated with Christmas Day. However, it’s safe to say the tone of the episode didn’t sit well with all viewers, with some branding it an “insult” and “unacceptable” to Christianity. The BBC’s synopsis for the episode reads: “The Goes Wrong Show team present their take on the nativity story, generously funded by a corporate sponsor after the BBC refused to pay for any more of the Cornley Dramatic Society’s work. “As ever, all soon descends into chaos: an ingenious pop-up book set soon proves a physical danger to both cast and crew, the angel Gabriel develops a firework obsession, the actors inside a donkey have a terrible falling out that results in unnecessary nudity, and there is much more fire than anyone anticipated. In between, the greatest story ever told is told.” The Goes Wrong Show Christmas special starred the likes Henry Shields, Charlie Russell and Henry Lewis hoping to provide the laughs. But the episode had the opposite desired effect with some, with several BBC viewers venting their outrage online. READ MORE: Charlie Stayt sparks uproar from BBC viewers for misgendering Eddie Izzard Taking to Twitter, one disgruntled viewer said: “#bbc what a disgrace I have just watched BBC TV The Goes Wrong Show “Series 2: 1. The Nativity I am a Christian and found the show totally unacceptable.” And they weren’t alone as a second echoed: “The Goes Wrong Show: The Nativity @bbc canned laughter, not funny, so offensive to millions of Christians across London.” “The Goes Wrong Show tonight in BBC 1 – appalling and an insult to the Christian religion,” weighed in a third. “However, we are always very conscious of how jokes might resonate with those with direct experience of the subjects we cover, and we never set out to mock or undermine their beliefs and experiences.” Despite some of the criticism from viewers, there was still a number who enjoyed the festive tongue-in-cheek comedy. One viewer added to the debate: “Have just caught up with the #GoesWrongShow nativity.. absolutely brilliant!! Can’t wait until we can see the amazing @mischiefcomedy live again!” “#GoesWrongShow nativity was absolutely brilliant. Thank you @mischiefcomedy. Whole family in fits of laughter,” added a second. Squidbillies star Stuart Baker, who voices dad Early Cuyler on the Adult Swim animated comedy, has been fired after posting a number of incendiary statements on Facebook. Baker, who goes by the stage name Unknown Hinson, called Dolly Parton a “freak titted, old Southern bimbo” and a “slut” after the country singer voiced support for the Black Lives Matter movement, per our sister site Variety. He went on to tell his liberal fans to “unfollow me, please. Because I don’t want you UN-AMERICANS around!… HAVE FUN forsaking your own race, culture and heritage.” Squidbillies creators Jim Fortier and Dave Willis announced Baker’s firing in a tweet on the show’s official Twitter handle on Sunday: “We’re aware of the extremely offensive and derogatory social media posts made late last week by Stuart D. Baker. The views he expressed do not reflect our own personal values or the values of the show that we and many others have worked hard to produce over the past 15 years. For those reasons, production of Squidbillies will continue without Mr. Baker, effective immediately.” Debuting back in 2005 on Adult Swim, Squidbillies follows father-and-son mud squids Early and Rusty, who live in the Georgia backwoods. The show often touches on topical political subjects, including a 2016 episode that saw Early rage against a local Confederate flag ban and join a Southern heritage group. Squidbillies was renewed for a 13th season last year. Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid welcomed Professor Kehinde Andrews and journalist Tom Harwood onto Good Morning Britain today to discuss whether controversial historical statues should remain after the statue of plantation and slave over Robert Milligan was removed in London, following Black Lives Matter protestors who toppled a Edward Colston statue. During a debate on whether the statue of Lord Nelson should be taken down and if so, should the Nelson Mandela statue be pulled down too, Andrews compared Hitler with Winston Churchill. Morgan asked: “Would you target Lord Nelson and by the same logic would you target Nelson Mandela?” Andrews dismissed the idea of Mandela’s statue being pulled down before addressing an earlier argument between Harwood and Morgan on whether he would have agreed with statues of Hitler being pulled down. Morgan hit back: “I rate Mandela along with Churchill as the two greatest people of my lifetime. I had the pleasure of meeting him, he was a remarkable man and he came out as a man of peace but he went into prison as a man who advocated violence for political ambition and he’s admitted himself that he did that. “My point is you can construct a negative about Mandela as you can about Churchill and others, where is the line?” Explaining his argument, Andrews said: “I just want to really point this out; the two people you mentioned – Winston Churchill and Lord Nelson are both famous for what? Read more: Tory MP admits UK was ‘slow into lockdown’ in fiery GMB interview “Violence! I mean, levels of violence which ail in comparison to the small amounts of violence Mandela committed.” He continued: “The key thing about this is, what is the history we want to remember, statues are not about history – you don’t learn about history from walking around the street, you learn history from schools etc. “It’s what is the version of history we want to present and do you want a version of history that is slave traders, colonists, fascists – is that what you want in your public space? “That’s the debate that we’re having and I think it’s about high time we get rid of theses statues – however we get rid of them – these campaigns have been going for years and sometimes to make an omelette you have to crack eggs.” Andrews said: “That’s one of the things about the racism of the Nazis, eugenics, University Central London where they’ll be tearing their statue soon. Churchill believed in eugenics and those beliefs which led to the extermination of the Jews were not that different the beliefs that led to the slavery of us they can from the same place.” Interrupting, Morgan said: “I’ve got to defend Winston Churchill, when this country was threatened with its greatest threat to civilisation we ever had, of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis and when it looked like the odds were insurmountable, he almost single–handedly railed this country to defeat the most racist person there’s ever been.” “That’s why I said to you, you can paint a negative picture of the early life of Nelson Mandela too, many people did. I’m not equating them but if you’re going to equate Churchill to Hitler you’re making an equivalent that I find offensive too,” Morgan added. Those watching the discussion at home took to Twitter to express their own views on the matter. One said: “If you can’t accept that Churchill held racist views & made comments in favour of eugenics while also doing a great thing in fighting against Hitler then you’re very blinkered. All those things can be true at the same time (and they are) #GMB.” “Get this idiotic professor off comparing Churchill to Hitler. #GMB.” someone else wrote. Another added: “Fair argument until he compared Churchill to Hitler.. absolute idiot #gmb.” “Wow, this bloke comparing Churchill to Hitler.. @piersmorgan is right when he says that’s offensive #GMB,” a viewer wrote. Someone else argued: “To be clear, In the mind of Britain, Churchill wasn’t a racist he just did and said racist things #GMB.” Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am. MTV has “severed ties” with The Challenge star Dee Nguyen over a pair of since-deleted tweets in which she made light of the Black Lives Matter movement and the death of George Floyd. Nguyen on Saturday tweeted, “Idk why some of u think I’m anti BLM. I’ve been saying that since the day I lost my virginity.” She also commented on an Instagram post about Floyd, writing that “people die every f–king day,” according to Us Weekly. In response to these posts, MTV on Monday took to social media with an announcement of its own: “As a result of Dee Nguyen’s offensive comments on the Black Lives Matter movement, we have severed ties with her,” the MTV reality competition series announced via Twitter on Monday, June 8. “Out of respect for our Challengers, we’ll air our season as planned. We strongly condemn systemic racism and stand with those raising their voices against injustice.” Nguyen reacted to her firing Tuesday morning on Instagram: “The last 24hrs have made me realised what is important and that is forgiveness. I would like to offer my sincerest apology to my colleagues to whom I have hurt directly and indirectly due to my insensitive remarks. Let me be clear I am a POC that cares about BLM. I believe in this movement and I’m stepping away from social media to focus on my wellbeing and mental health. This is not a goodbye, it’s a I will see you again.” First introduced to TV audiences via the British reality hit Geordie Shore, Nguyen joined The Challenge franchise in 2019, competing in War of the Worlds and War of the Worlds 2. Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson is choosing to forego “the usual contrition” after audio surfaced of him making offensive remarks during a radio call-ins from years ago. During call-ins to the Bubble the Love Sponge shock jock radio program, which took place between 2006 and 2011 and were brought to light on Sunday by Media Matters — an organization that “pushes back on right-wing misinformation, hypocrisy and smears” — Carlson refers to Martha Stewart’s daughter, Alexis Stewart, as “c–ty”; calls Arianna Huffington a “pig”; and labels Britney Spears and Paris Hilton “the biggest white whores in America.” Carlson also says that women are “extremely primitive” and enjoy being told to “be quiet and kind of do what you’re told.” He also minimizes the crimes of then-Most Wanted fugitive Warren Jeffs, who arranged illegal marriages between his adult male followers in the FLDS Church and underage girls in Utah. “[A]rranging a marriage between a 16-year-old and a 27-year-old is not the same as pulling a stranger off the street and raping her,” he says on the tape. “That’s bullsh–t.” Hours after the audio surfaced, Carlson said on Twitter that he would forego the apology that public figures confronted with past indiscretions typically offer up. Instead, he invited anyone who disagrees with his views as expressed these days on TV to come challenge him on Tucker Carlson Tonight. A senior scientist at Pisa University has sparked anger following a talk he gave on the role of women in physics at Cern, the European nuclear research centre, in which he said that physics was “invented and built by men”. Responding to the backlash, Cern released a statement which said the talk given by Prof Alessandro Strumia had been “highly offensive” to women in science. During the talk, Strumia said that male scientists were being discriminated against and that men were being passed over for jobs in favor of women based on “ideology rather than merit”. There was a workshop at @CERN recently: "1st Workshop on High Energy Theory and Gender". Apparently Strumia gave a talk and manages to hit every horrible idea on gender issues in STEM while demeaning his female colleagues (at CERN and everywhere else). 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ — Dr Seyda Ipek (@sheydaipek) September 30, 2018 Strumia presented the results of a study published scientific research papers which he said “proved” that physics was not sexist against women, rather that this notion is “part of a political battle coming from outside”. Strumia also claimed that research by male scientists was cited more by other scientists in their own publications, which he said was an indication of higher quality work. He also showed data which he said showed that male and female scientists were cited more equally at the beginning of their careers, but that as they progressed, men scored better. Hey @CERN is Alessandro Strumia fired yet? He told a room full of early-career scientists and women that "Physics invented and built by men, it’s not by invitation." and that "Smarter people less affected by implicit bias, traps, etc." He needs to go. #MeTooSTEM — Tisha Bohr 👩🏻🔬🔬 (@tishabohr) October 1, 2018 Cern has removed the slides used in Strumia’s talk from its website “in line with a code of conduct that does not tolerate personal attacks and insults”. The senior scientist, however, has said he was just delivering factual information, telling the BBC that “people say that physics is sexist, physics is racist. I made some simple checks and discovered that it wasn’t, that it was becoming sexist against men and said so.” During the presentation, Strumia also said that “men prefer working with things and women prefer working with people” and said there was a “difference even in children before any social influence”. To back up his points, Strumia said that Oxford University “extends exam times for women’s benefit” and that Italy offers “free or cheaper university” for female research students. Unsurprisingly, not everyone was delighted by his presentation and it sparked an angry online reaction, with some pointing out that it was important to provide incentives for women trying get their foot in the door in a male-dominated field. The utterly false & misogynistic talk by Strumia at @CERN workshop on gender & high energy physics is a kick in the teeth for everyone who's spent years volunteering as @STEMAmbassadors working to engage the next generation of scientists & engineers. Massively unhelpful. — Tim McCann #FBPE #FinalSayForAll (@mccanntb) October 1, 2018 Short summary of Strumia’s talk: women aren’t as good at physics as men and they’ve been allocated too much funding/ been promoted into positions of power unfairly. He said this to an audience of early career #womeninSTEM. pic.twitter.com/HqZATl8Wal — Dr Jess Wade 👩🏻🔬 (@jesswade) September 30, 2018 Some also suggested that Strumia’s presentation was the result of anger he felt at being passed over for a job by a woman scientist — an event which he made reference to himself. Reading through Strumia's slides… Imagine being so petty about not getting a job that you invent the idea that physics is sexist *against men* to make yourself feel better 🙄 #womeninSTEMpic.twitter.com/8DKf1CU4Dl — Conor McKeever (@conor_mckeever) October 1, 2018 Some also pointed out that it was a woman, Marie Curie, who was the first person ever to be awarded two Nobel prizes for science — one of which was in physics. "Male scientists produce better research than female scientists"–Prof Strumia? Tell that to madame Curie, first person–male or female–to be awarded two Nobel prizes for physics! — Paul Rogers (@paulrogers002) October 1, 2018 And the double standards are staggering. He says that physics welcomed Curie after she got her Nobel. Where is Strumia’s Nobel? Why are women perennially held to standards that the vast majority of male scientists don’t achieve? — Jennifer L. Rohn (@JennyRohn) October 1, 2018 It’s not the first time a male scientist found himself in hot water over comments made about females in science, either. Nobel laureate Tim Hunt ended up resigning from University College London in 2015 after he told a room of young female scientists at a talk in South Korea that the “trouble with girls” in science laboratories is that “when you criticize them, they cry.” Like this story? US President Donald Trump has signed off on a new cyber strategy – the first such document in 15 years – outlining defensive priorities and threatening offensive action against foreign hackers. “Today the president signed a national cyber strategy, the first fully articulated cyber strategy in 15 years,” National Security Adviser John Bolton told reporters on Thursday. “The strategy takes effect today.” The 35-page document, made public by the White House, is the first time the US has articulated an offensive cyber strategy. It rolls back many of the restrictions placed on Washington’s digital warriors under Trump’s predecessor, according to Bolton. "We're not just on defense," said Bolton about the new cyber strategy. It includes retaliatory options, he said. And it is meant to target foreign adversaries, nothing domestic. Said US looking to create "powerful deterrent structures" against foreign cyber threats. — Mark Knoller (@markknoller) September 20, 2018 “Our hands are not tied, as they were in the Obama administration,” Bolton said. “Our presidential directive effectively reversed those restraints, enabling offensive cyber operations through the relevant departments.” Any country that takes cyber activity against the US can expect Washington to “respond offensively as well as defensively,” Bolton added. “Beyond that, I’m just not going to go at this point.” The primary goal of the strategy, according to Bolton, is to secure critical government and infrastructure systems, improve incident reporting, and fight cyber crime. There will also be a focus on attributing cyber attacks, in order to create “norms of responsible state behavior.” The strategy also seeks to promote open, reliable and interoperable internet worldwide, Bolton said. Among the listed goals was also the development of a “superior cybersecurity workforce” and promotion of US innovation in cybersecurity. Think your friends would be interested? Share this story! Taliban militants have captured eight police security posts in northern Afghanistan amid an insurgents’ offensive that continues in the conflict-ridden country, local media report. The clashes in Sari-Pul province started on Sunday night, local officials confirmed to TOLOnews, adding that the militants had attacked the area from three directions. “If the government does not send reinforcements, the center will collapse to the Taliban,” Provincial Governor Zabihullah Amani admitted. According to Pajhwok news agency, the group captured at least eight security posts in the province. Heavy clashes and fighting were also reported in two more provinces in the north of the country. At least 13 security forces personnel were killed in an attack on a checkpoint in Kunduz province, Mohammad Yusouf Ayubi, head of the provincial council, told AP. The fighting in Zawzjan province resulted in eight police officers being killed, provincial Police Chief Gen. Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani added. There were also casualties among the Taliban, officials confirmed. Clashes didn’t abate even during the unprecedented Eid holiday ceasefire in June. “We are ready to strike if chemical weapons were used again,” Armed Forces Chief Francois Lecointre told a small group of reporters Thursday.
“They can be carried out at national level but it’s in our interest to do it with as many partners as possible,” he added.
The threats come a week after the Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov warned top diplomats in Washington that militants in Idlib were planning a false-flag chemical attack, in order to frame the government of Bashar Assad as his forces prepare for an offensive to recapture the northern province.
US President Donald Trump too has warned Assad over the Idlib offensive, tweeting on Monday that his forces must not “recklessly attack” the province. The US earlier stated that it would “retaliate” against any chemical attacks by the Syrian government, using more firepower than it did back in April.
France joined the US and the UK as partners in the April strikes, launching more than 100 missiles at Syrian government targets. The move was in retaliation for an alleged poison gas attack in the city of Douma, 10km northeast of Damascus.
French involvement saw three cruise missiles launched from French Navy frigates deployed in the eastern Mediterranean, while French Air Force Rafale fighter jets launched nine airborne missiles. However, several salvos malfunctioned.
In the aftermath of the strikes, French President Emmanuel Macron defended the coalition’s actions, saying that “history will judge” whether the operation was justified.
Notably, the bombardment was carried out hours before the first experts from the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons were due to arrive in the area of the suspected assault.
The Western narrative that Damascus was responsible for the alleged gas attack has also been called into question in the months since the April bombing.
An interim report published by specialists from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said it found no traces of nerve agents at the site of the suspected chemical attack in the Syrian city of Douma.
Western journalists too have countered the mainstream media’s claims. Speaking to citizens of Douma after fighters from the jihadist group Jaish Al-Islam left the city for Idlib in April, the Independent’s Robert Fisk found that many he talked to had “never believed in” gas stories.
Instead, they attributed poison gas claims to stories put out by armed groups.
