U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Samuel Alito, Jr. sit next to each other as all of the justices on the court pose for their group portrait on November 30, 2018.

  • RBG would have fought back against Samuel Alito's Roe v. Wade opinion, her longtime friend says.
  • NPR's Nina Totenberg discussed the late Supreme Court Justice in an interview this week.
  • Totenberg said Ginsburg's words were taken "out of context" in Alito's majority opinion.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg would have been displeased with her inclusion in Justice Samuel Alito's majority opinion overturning Roe v. Wade earlier this year, according to Ginsburg's longtime friend and peer.

NPR legal correspondent Nina Totenberg spoke about her years-long friendship with the late judge in an NPR interview this week while promoting her forthcoming book "Dinners with Ruth." During the conversation, Totenberg suggested that Ginsburg, a fierce defender of women's rights, would have fought back against Alito's choice to quote her in his polarizing opinion.

The Supreme Court in June overturned Roe v. Wade in a 5-4 decision that gutted the nearly 50-year-old landmark ruling that legalized abortion nationwide, following an unprecedented leak of the draft opinion in the case.

In his majority decision, Alito cited Ginsburg twice in arguing his belief that Roe was "egregiously wrong from the start,"

"Everybody knows that if she had been alive, she would have taken his skin off over that section, but it remained in the opinion," Totenberg said of Ginsburg's quote.

In a lecture published in the 1992 issue of the New York University Law Review, Ginsburg argued that Roe v. Wade didn't go far enough in enshrining a women's right to choose.

"Roe…halted a political process that was moving in a reform direction and thereby, I believed, prolonged divisiveness and deferred stable settlement of the issue," Alito quotes Ginsburg near the start of his 98-page opinion.

Totenberg said Alito's decision to include Ginsburg's voice was one made in bad faith.

"I think that's an indication of how much bad feeling there is among the justices on this court that that section was not taken out because it was written out of context completely," the journalist said.

Ginsburg throughout her life was open in her reservations about the legal basis on which Roe was passed, arguing that the landmark ruling actually "stopped the momentum that was on the side of change" in favor of abortion rights. She believed it would have been more effective for the court to consider a case that emphasized a woman's right to choose on the matter of equal protection under the law, rather than the right to privacy on which the case was ultimately decided.

Ginsburg died at the age of 87 in 2020. Her death opened the door for then President Donald Trump to appoint Justice Amy Coney Barrett in his effort to support judges who would overturn Roe v. Wade — which she ultimately helped do.

In the aftermath of her death, some have criticized Ginsburg for not stepping down when Barack Obama was president so he could appoint a liberal judge to replace her.

Totenberg suggested that Ginsburg's reason for remaining was twofold: She thought the Republican-controlled Congress would block her successor, and she believed Hillary Clinton would be the next president and wanted to give the first female leader the opportunity to appoint her successor.

"She rolled the dice, and she lost," Totenberg said.

‘He’s off!’ Andi Peters runs off Lorraine as he refuses to chat to reporter Ross King https://briefnews.eu/hes-off-andi-peters-runs-off-lorraine-as-he-refuses-to-chat-to-reporter-ross-king/ https://briefnews.eu/hes-off-andi-peters-runs-off-lorraine-as-he-refuses-to-chat-to-reporter-ross-king/#respond Thu, 08 Apr 2021 09:24:26 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/hes-off-andi-peters-runs-off-lorraine-as-he-refuses-to-chat-to-reporter-ross-king/

Andi Peters joined Cat Deeley on Lorraine in the studio as he shared details of the latest competition. However, he quickly rushed off when Cat revealed Ross was coming up next on the show to talk about his exclusive interview with singer Demi Lovato. Andi didn’t even bother to make an excuse for his exit but simply got up and ran off.

Cat remarked: “I think he’s asleep,” pointing to Andi, who could be seen reclining in an armchair.

“No I’m just relaxing, sunbathing,” Andi shouted. “What’s on next?”

Cat replied: “Ross, he’s in LA,” before the presenter jumped up and ran off set.

“Oh God Ross, okay, no way, can’t stay for that,” Andi exclaimed as he disappeared leaving Cat stunned.

The presenter was left looking a little confused before welcoming the entertainment reporter live from LA.

“Ross, good morning,” she began as Ross joked: “Good morning, everyone’s a critic.”

Cat confirmed Andi was still in the ITV studios but had just hidden behind the cameras.

As a shot of the presenter popped up, Andi said: “Love you Ross,” before blowing him a kiss.

Another added: “Love, love, love #CatDeeley ! Keep her permanently please!”

A third continued: “Cat Deeley on the box. In for #lorraine Hope this become a permanent fixture!”

However, some weren’t as impressed as they begged for Lorraine Kelly to return to her chat show.

“@catdeeley is god awful on this show. She’s managed to push her way in now she failed in the USA,” one unimpressed viewer posted.

“You said you need to be careful because they have big teeth Barnes is a busy area there’s lots of kids, lots of dogs going along,” Holly interjected.

“Do you have to be careful with your dogs to make sure they don’t go near the seal? If you’ve got children they’re going to be inquisitive but they need to keep a safe distance.”

“Absolutely,” Scott replied. “These creatures, it’s a joy and it’s a blessing that we can have them. I’m finding it incredibly inspirational that you can be in central London and find this wildlife.

“You do want to make sure that you stay protected, yes these seals carry some nasty bacteria in their mouths, they can bite very hard. But we just want to keep them around, we want them to be happy here and they are enjoying the fact theses waters are clean. We need to respect our wildlife if we want to enjoy them as well.”

‘He’s walking off’ James Martin shakes his head in dismay over Holly Willoughby comment https://briefnews.eu/hes-walking-off-james-martin-shakes-his-head-in-dismay-over-holly-willoughby-comment/ https://briefnews.eu/hes-walking-off-james-martin-shakes-his-head-in-dismay-over-holly-willoughby-comment/#respond Mon, 08 Mar 2021 15:18:29 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/hes-walking-off-james-martin-shakes-his-head-in-dismay-over-holly-willoughby-comment/

James, 48, joined Holly Willoughby, 40, and Phillip Schofield, 58, on This Morning to whip them up a number of delicious dishes. As is routine, the trio usually picks fun at each other and this often leads to rather hilarious moments on the ITV show. However, it seems the chef was less than impressed with a comment the mother-of-three made about it him when the programme returned to screens after an advertisement break.

With the chef getting set to make some pork crackling, Holly decided to tell viewers what James was going to make preparing.

In doing so, she made a joke about his “meat”, which left the culinary genius shaking his head as he cringed at the joke.

Going one step further, the kitchen wizard then headed towards the doors of the studio and make a swift exit from the set.

The hosts were both left in hysterics and desperately tried to compose themselves after watching their guest walk off.

Taking to Twitter, viewers were more interested in how much butter the chef was putting into his dishes, with one writing: “Do you need any butter for this recipe James?”

“Never have I been so glad to see James Martin and his mound of butter,” another avid viewer posted on the social media platform.

Whilst a third fan jokingly remarked: “James is a great advert for his all butter diet any way #ThisMorning.”

A fourth shared: “Where the f**k is James Martin and the EU butter mountain when you need them, eh?! #ThisMorning.”

James continued: “Martin Frizell, who’s the boss of This Morning, phoned me up the year after and said, ‘We want you back,’ and I said, ‘Not a b****y chance.’

“That’s the toughest job in TV. No rehearsal, I didn’t know what was going on and the first subject was about a six foot woman goth with a crow and a Great Dane.

“The following conversation was about some women’s issues. I thought, ‘What am I doing here?!’,” he told Platinum Magazine.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.

Dancing on Ice viewers distracted by ‘off putting’ fake audience: ‘Can barely watch!’ https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-viewers-distracted-by-off-putting-fake-audience-can-barely-watch/ https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-viewers-distracted-by-off-putting-fake-audience-can-barely-watch/#respond Mon, 01 Mar 2021 05:08:59 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-viewers-distracted-by-off-putting-fake-audience-can-barely-watch/

Dancing on Ice bosses have had to make several changes this year as usual proceedings have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The number of contestants taking part has also drastically fallen following multiple injuries over the last few weeks. To still bring energy to the ITV programme, sound effects of people clapping and cheering on the remaining stars have been introduced in this series. However, those watching at home weren’t best pleased with the changes.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: “That clapping is really off-putting and I’m not even skating! No real audience would clap the whole way through #DancingOnIce.”

Another posted: “Wow the fake audience clapping on #DancingOnIceis really jarring tonight, could barely hear the music even @dancingonice.”

Whilst a third commented: “I absolutely hate this fake studio noise I can barely hear the music that there skating to #DancingOnIce.”

“Can we have the incessant seal-like clapping in the back and music more in the foreground please Mr #DancingOnIce sound person,” a fourth shared.

A fifth opined: “Calm the crowd noise down #DancingOnIce,” with a sixth stating: “Turn down the audience ‘clapping’ #DancingOnIce.”

Sunday night’s show was the first episode to air since bosses decide to put the programme on a brief hiatus last weekend.

Instead of a live instalment of the competition, a rundown of some of the biggest moments to air from the show was broadcast.

Therefore, the remaining five contestants wanted to do their best to prove they are worthy to be crowned champion.

The celebrities still taking part at the beginning of the show included Colin Jackson, 54, and Rebekah Vardy, 39.

Sonny Jay, 27, Lady Leshurr, 32, and Faye Brookes, 33, made up the rest of the line-up as five celebrities have pulled out following injuries sustained in training or from testing positive from coronavirus.

Faye also performed for the first time with her new partner Matt Evers, 44, after Hamish Gaman, 37, had to withdraw after injuring himself.

Despite this change, the former Coronation Street actress is still the favourite to win the competition.

According to the latest odds from Coral bookmakers, the soap star stands at 1/2 to be crowned victor in a few weeks time.

Coral spokesperson Harry Aitkenhead said: “Five celebrities remain to battle it out on the ice to be crowned Dancing on Ice 2021’s champion and we make Faye the hot favourite to go all the way.”

They also believe Rebekah was the favourite to leave the show as her chances of leaving were 5/4 just 24 hours before the latest live episode.

“The betting spells bad news for Rebekah, who is our favourite to be next to go,” Aitkenhead explained, before stating: “She will have to upset the odds if she is to finish any better than 5th place.”

Not far behind Faye in contention for the title of the victor is Capital FM presenter, Sonny, at 3/1, with Colin in third place at 12/1.

Earlier this week, it was announced that because of all the withdrawals, the final would be pushed forward by one week.

An ITV spokesperson said: “The competitions final will now take place on Sunday 14th March.

“Our production team and cast have delivered a fantastic show during incredibly challenging times.

“Continuing to make the best TV for our viewers is our top priority and we look forward to the rest of the series.”

Dancing on Ice continues Sundays at 6:15pm on ITV.

Spokesperson Harry Aitkenhead said: “The celebrities remain to battle it out on the ice to be crowned Dancing on Ice 2021’s champion and we make Faye the hot favourite to go all the way.”

Speaking of being partnered with Matt Evers, 44, after Hamish Gaman’s, 37, exit, Faye said: “Well my head was spinning, obviously, but what’s so lovely is I owe everything to Hamish for teaching me all the basics, the technique, to how to perform, and I fell in love with ice skating.

“Things have changed and I got given Matt, he has been here since day one which is phenomenal, he knows what the judges are looking for and, but he’s a pro, we’ve had to work ridiculously hard in the last week and just kind of go with it,” she told This Morning.

Matt added: “It’s a whole new world, literally we’ve had 11 hours together to get ready for Sunday.”

Emmerdale spoilers: Faith Dingle returns to Village as beloved family member ‘killed off’ https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-faith-dingle-returns-to-village-as-beloved-family-member-killed-off/ https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-faith-dingle-returns-to-village-as-beloved-family-member-killed-off/#respond Wed, 13 Jan 2021 00:35:28 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-spoilers-faith-dingle-returns-to-village-as-beloved-family-member-killed-off/

Faith (played by Sally Dexter) was last seen on Emmerdale when she confessed to son Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) she knew he had a secret child in Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter). The betrayal was too much for the village bad boy to bear and he offered his mother an ultimatum; either she leaves or he would. Having kept her distance, the matriarch is making her triumphant return to the ITV soap to see if she can bury the hatchet of the wrongdoings from her past. However, it seems she might have another reason for wanting to reunite with her family as her comeback is centred around death.

The drama kicks off in February when Cain’s wife Moira Barton (Natalie J Robb) inadvertently crosses paths with her mother-in-law.

Faith looks somewhat different as she is dressed like an undertaker and is in the process of stealing a hearse when she bumps into her daughter-in-law.

It has not yet been explained why the mother-of-two seems to have found a new profession, but could it be an estranged family member has died and she wants to give them a fitting send-off?

Never one to stick to the straight and narrow path, the feisty character could be trying to lay her loved one to rest with as little cost as possible.

However, how would her loved ones react back in the Village if they realise they wouldn’t have been given the chance to say their goodbyes?

After their chance meeting, Faith will turn up in the Dales and ask Moira if she thinks her son will ever forgive his mother.

Having just got her marriage with Cain back on track, it is unlikely the farm owner will want to upset the apple cart.

Will she convince her mother-in-law to stay away and focus on getting over her grief of losing a family member?

Or will the feisty character decide she wants the chance to rebuild her relationship with her son, regardless of the repercussions?

“A character bursting with fun, Faith’s certainly set to ruffle a few feathers and will test the Dingle’s loyalties like never before,” she continued.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome Sally back to Emmerdale, an actor exuding vibrant charm,” Sophie concluded.

Viewers have been calling for the character to return ever since she left the Village in the Autumn of 2019.

Taking to Twitter, one fan of the feisty grandmother wrote: “#Emmerdale is really missing Faith Dingle, missing all the humour.”

Another posted late last year: “I would personally love a Faith return at Christmas. I know she could be a pain, but I think #Emmerdale needs some more big characters again!”

Executive producer Jane Hudson had only teased Faith’s return a week ago when she told the press what was coming up in the next few months.

The soap boss told Express.co.uk and other publications: “We have a very much loved character coming back to the village!

“They light up the screen. There’s going to be lots of fun. The actor/actress has returned to shooting. Look out for their return coming up soon.”

Viewers will have to wait and see what drama follows Faith in the coming weeks and months.

Emmerdale continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.
