The authors of the review said the cholesterol-lowering drugs, taken by six million Britons, may not help when used as the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

They also concluded that statin treatment has many serious side effects and claim these have been “minimised” by certain trials.

The results of the study of almost 1.3 million people was published last week in the Expert Review Of Clinical Pharmacology journal.

One of the authors, Prof Sherif Sultan, of the International Society for Vascular Surgery, said: “Millions of people all over the world, including many with no history of heart disease, are taking statins despite unproven benefits and serious side effects.”

Prof Sultan was also concerned that inhibitor drugs to further lower LDL cholesterol (LDL-C), referred to as “bad” cholesterol, are being promoted.

The study found no link between high levels of LDL-C and hardening of the arteries – known as atherosclerosis.

Prof Sultan said: “We suggest that clinicians should abandon the use of statins and PCSK-9 inhibitors, and instead identify and target the actual causes of cardiovascular disease.”

PCSK9 inhibitors are a relatively new class of cholesterol lowering treatments.

The paper disputes recommendations in a number of reviews of statin use and claims those are “based on misleading statistics, exclusion of unsuccessful trials and ignoring numerous contradictory observations”.

The paper says high LDL-C levels appear to be unrelated to the risk of disease, both in individuals with familial hypercholesterolemia – a genetic condition that causes abnormally high levels of LDL-C – and in the general population.

Some doctors and patients are worried about the long-term side effects of statins which have been linked in some studies to diabetes, muscle pain and memory loss.

They argue that in many cases risks can be lowered by making changes to an individual’s diet and exercise.

Others are concerned with the “overmedicalisation” of the middle-aged, which sees statins prescribed as a “just in case” measure to those who may develop heart problems in later life.

But statins supporters – including the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice), which produces national guidance on health and social care – say the pills should be given more widely to prevent thousands of early deaths.

The news comes a week after a major study in the British Medical Journal concluded that giving statins to elderly people in good health could be of no benefit.

The Spanish research of 47,000 over-75s found no evidence that statins make any difference to low-risk patients.

April Doss, the senior counsel to the Democrats on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) defined the scope of the investigation as anyone a subject “knows or has reason to believe [is] of Russian nationality or descent,” according to The Young Turks (TYT).

TYT researchers say they’ve obtained the email from Doss, which was copied to the Republican counsel Vanessa Le, and sent on December 19.

Doss is the former head of intelligence law at the National Security Agency (NSA), one of the three intelligence agencies behind the error-riddled ODNI report alleging Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. She was reportedly brought on to the Senate Intelligence Committee by Senator Mark Warner (D-Virginia), one of the leading proponents of Russiagate.

“The SSCI investigation is critically important, and it’ll be a privilege to return to public service in this role,” Doss said in April, when she joined the committee staff.

The definition of the investigation’s scope comes in response to a request for clarification by conservative blogger Charles C. Johnson. In July, Johnson received a letter from Senator Richard Burr (R-North Carolina) and Warner requesting a “closed interview” and that he hand over materials “relevant” to the investigation including “all documents, emails, text messages, direct messages, calendar appointments, memoranda, notes or other documents related to any communications with Russian persons.”

This is not the first time vague criteria have been used to define the scope of the investigation into alleged Russian meddling. During a SSCI hearing in November on Russia’s use of social media, Twitter Associate General Counsel Sean Edgett revealed that the company’s methods to detect “Russian-linked” accounts include use of a Russian phone number, mobile carrier, email address, IP address, Cyrillic characters in one’s username, and whether one has “logged in, at any time, from Russia.”

Meanwhile, the House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes (R-California) has issued a subpoena to David Kramer, an associate of Senator John McCain (R-Arizona), according to the Washington Examiner.

Kramer reportedly traveled to London on behalf of McCain to meet with Christopher Steele, the former British spy and author of the infamous dossier which contains salacious allegations of Trump’s ties to Russia. McCain delivered a copy to then-FBI director James Comey, although Steele had already provided portions of the dossier to the Bureau.

Kramer was interviewed by the House Intelligence Committee on December 19 and said that he knew the Russian sources in the Steele dossier, but refused to reveal them. Revealing those sources would be a determining factor in the conclusion of the investigation into the Trump-Russia affair, according to the Examiner. The subpoena directed Kramer to appear before the committee on January 11.

Friction Free Shaving (FFS) a UK start-up provides women with an honest view of shaving  – the advert depicts the reality of a woman shaving in the shower. 

Facebook has sparked outrage after it banned the advert – and now co-founder of Friction Free Shaving Briar Keen is fighting back. 

The British brand offers women subscription-order razors bridging the gender gap and helping women buy quality products without breaking the bank.

During initial research, FFS customers told the team they believed there was the lack of honesty when it comes to advertising female shaving products.

There are rarely ‘real women’ in real shaving situations being promoted in the mainstream media; adverts appear to favour images of models posing on the edge of expensive bath tubs wearing dressing gowns.   

Listening to this, FFS created a campaign all about real women in real bathrooms getting down to real shaving – they dubbed the moves ‘shoga’ or shaving-yoga. 

It was the first campaign for the company and the concept of shoga was embraced across Britain. The company decided to push the advert out to Facebook users. 

This was where FFS ran into an issue as the woman in the film ‘shaving’ was wearing a nude body suit, and the company decided to block out her breasts and nether-regions. 

Facebook deemed the blocking out of her modesty to be ‘suggested nudity’ – which is prohibited under section nine of their advertising policies. 

Co-founder of Friction Free Shaving Briar Keen said: “Our ad highlights the daily realities of women’s shaving in a fun way. We purposefully used a real woman, shaving naked as women do (although with her modesty covered) in a typical bathroom to achieve this. 

“We wanted to move away from traditional and outdated women’s shaving ads that are over-glamourised, sexualised and unrealistic. 

“We don’t think that a woman shaving is anything to be ashamed of and find it sexist and deeply offensive that Facebook have banned our ad on these grounds. 

“We know a lot of women will agree with us, so we’re calling on them to support us by watching our video in full at ffs.co.uk and sharing our story on their social media channels.”

Facebook advertising policy states: “Adverts must not contain adult content. This includes nudity, depictions of people in explicit or suggestive positions or activities that are overly suggestive or sexually provocative.

“Sexually suggestive content is: Nudity or implied nudity, even if artistic or educational in nature, excessive visible skin or cleavage, even if not explicitly sexual in nature, or images focused on individual body parts, such as abs, buttocks or chests, even if not explicitly sexual in nature.”

The advert was banned by Facebook, despite discussions between FFS and the social networking site.
