Super Mario Odyssey modder TheSunCat takes you through his insanely difficult custom level for the game.

Since a simple method for unlocking most Switch hardware was revealed back in March, much of the hacking community has been focused on developing homebrew software/emulators for the system. But a small community of Super Mario Odyssey fans has been using their expanded Switch access to modify the game with new costumes, gameplay features, and even entirely new levels.

The modifications started a few months ago with simple save file edits that let players overflow the game’s coin counter or unlock all the game’s costumes, including some costumes that have yet to be officially released. From there, hackers started to figure out how to make cosmetic edits to in-game files, leading to mods that replace the power moons with old-school power stars or give Mario a Sonic the Hedgehog outfit, for instance. And why listen to that boring Mario music when you can replace it with “Despacito” (or watch a “Despacito” music video on a screen in Snow Kingdom)?

It wasn’t long before the hackers were digging into the game code to modify the way Super Mario Odyssey plays, too. Hacker Simon Aarons created a mod that lets players run with super speed and “moon jump” to otherwise impossible heights. Others have made mods that let Mario breathe indefinitely underwater or play as Bowser in unintended areas of the game.

James Cameron has been in the internet’s hot seat lately for saying a lot of dumb, polarizing things. But this one may take the cake.

Cameron was asked about his cinematic influences that helped him shape his decades-long career as one of the sci-fi greats — one of which was understandably Stanley Kubrick’s seminal 2001: A Space Odyssey. But Cameron apparently loves nothing more than the taste of his feet, because his latest quote is a classic foot-in-the-mouth move from the Titanic and Avatar director.

James Cameron loves 2001: A Space Odyssey, but he doesn’t like it. And no, he’s not misquoting a Flo Rida song, Cameron is explaining how he could not completely embrace a film that helped shape him as a director.

In an interview with The Star, Cameron said that Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi magnum opus “had an enormous, enormous impact” on him when he was younger, but still finds it a little too “sterile.”

“It’s not a film that I like; it’s a film that I love. When I say I don’t like it, it’s that I don’t like the feel of the film. I don’t like its sterility. I like a film with a little more emotional balls, just as a movie, to get involved in. But as a work of art, I love [2001]. It had an had an enormous, enormous impact on me, at a certain point.”

But sterile or not, Cameron still thinks of the film fondly, recounting to The Star how he first saw the movie at age 13 in Toronto, five days after it opened in 1968. “It was probably five days after it opened, the summer of ’68,” Cameron says. “I watched [2001] from front row centre in the balcony, which put me dead in line to the Star Gate [Jupiter trip sequence], right on the axis, so I felt like I was falling down through the Star Gate.”

Cameron is not the only major director to look to 2001 as a major influence on his work. Christopher Nolan is famous for his undying love for 2001: A Space Odyssey, which he thinks should be required viewing for every 7-year-old. Nolan is even bringing an unrestored 70mm print of 2001 (probably his own personal copy) to screen at Cannes next month, just in time for the 50th anniversary 70mm re-release hitting select theaters this May. Let’s hope Nolan doesn’t hear what Cameron has to say about 2001. Or actually, let’s hope that he does, because I suddenly want to see these two major sci-fi filmmakers tussle over the honor of a 50-year-old classic film.

“Forza Motorsport 7” continues to maintain its freshness by offering new playable cars in its monthly downloadable Car Packs. April’s DLC has some really special offerings, as we see in the leaked trailer above. There are two classic Porsches. There’s a 1985 Nissan GT racer and a Greenwood Corvette. The 1948 Ferrari 166 Inter Sport looks particularly beautiful. There’s even a 2017 Maserati Levante S, so you can give that a virtual test drive before you head to your local dealership. Perhaps most surprising (if this isn’t some cruel joke) is that gamer moms and dads will get to take the 2018 Honda Odyssey that might be sitting in their driveway, and flog it on virtual versions of the world’s topflight racing circuits in “Forza 7.”

Interestingly, the minivan isn’t shown in the trailer above, only listed on the closing title screen as part of the April Car Pack. Perhaps developers thought the Odyssey looked too out-of-place next to a 1980 Porsche 924 Carrera GTS — though the Levante doesn’t exactly fit in, either. Somehow, the Honda’s visual absence only makes it more mysteriously enticing, like some plump dark horse waiting in its paddock for its turn to humiliate the competition. We drove the 2018 Honda Odyssey on the mountain roads above Kona, Hawaii, but our thumbs are itching to steer it around Spa-Francorchamps.

2015’s Alto’s Adventure was a surprise hit. It launched on iOS as a premium game with no microtransactions, and it landed at the top of App Store charts all over the world. It was developed by Team Alto, a collaboration between a Canadian company called Snowman and artist Harry Nesbitt, which had not previously published a game. Its sequel, Alto’s Odyssey, launched this week to positive reception once again—the game has a 91 on Metacritic.

On iOS, Adventure has no in-app purchases (IAP) other than a physical gear store that is unrelated to gameplay. On a platform loaded with free-to-play games that aren’t actually so free-to-play thanks to complex microtransaction schemes, only a few games achieve the kind of success Adventure has without IAP. Odyssey doesn’t have any IAP either, though the Android version of Adventure does.
