Time to get the Koosh balls out of storage: Rosie O’Donnell is reviving her Emmy-winning daytime talk show for a one-night-only, star-studded fundraiser that will stream live online this Sunday night.

Per our sister site Deadline, the fundraiser will stream live on Sunday, March 22 at 7/6c via Broadway.com and that site’s YouTube channel, and will feature interviews and appearances from Matthew Broderick, Kristin Chenoweth, Darren Criss, Gloria Estefan, Billy Porter, Morgan Freeman and more. Erich Bergen (Madam Secretary) will co-produce with O’Donnell.

The money raised will go to benefit The Actors Fund, a non-profit that supports performers and behind-the-scenes workers in the arts and entertainment industry — an industry hit hard by the closures and shutdowns put in effect to fight the global coronavirus pandemic.

“Everybody who knows me knows that Broadway has been one of the brightest lights in my life since the time I was a little girl,” O’Donnell said in a statement. “It has also been the lifeblood of New York City for generation after generation. After all, Broadway has given to the world, now — in this time of tremendous need — it’s our turn to give something back. There is no better way to support this community than via The Actors Fund. And, with a line-up like this, I dare you not to tune in.”

O’Donnell’s daytime talk show The Rosie O’Donnell Show debuted in 1996 and became a pop culture phenomenon, winning five Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Talk Show. The show wrapped up a six-season syndicated run in 2002. The leader of O’Donnell’s house band, John McDaniel, will also return for the one-night-only revival.

Two of Will Smith‘s most famous, breakout roles almost went to very different actors. In the case of Bad Boys, Jon Lovitz was originally going to play his part opposite of Dana Carvey. After Lovitz and Carvey bailed on the buddy cop movie, the studio had to be convinced Smith was right for the project. On Men in Black, director Barry Sonnenfeld had to do some persuading as well to secure Smith a part producer Steven Spielberg wanted to go to Chris O’Donnell.

Spielberg’s one stipulation for Men in Black was that O’Donnell, who had just starred in Batman Forever and In Love and War, would play Agent J, the newbie of the Men in Black. As for the old and wise Agent K, the executives were adamant about hiring Clint Eastwood, but Sonnenfeld knew he wanted Smith and Tommy Lee Jones .

In an excellent and candid career-spanning with Huffington Post, Sonnenfeld explained how he convinced O’Donnell to turn the role down:

[Spielberg] told me I had to go to dinner with Chris and convince Chris to be in the movie. But I knew I wanted Will Smith, so I told Chris that I wasn’t a very good director and I didn’t think the script was very good and if he had any other options he shouldn’t do Men in Black. He let it be known the next day that he was not interested.

Who else turned down the part? David Schwimmer. Apparently, Smith also passed on the role at some point, but his wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith, convinced him to do it. Sonnenfeld got Spielberg onboard about casting Smith when the director introduced them and they hit it off.

As for Jones, Sonnenfeld thought he “was very intimidating.” In the same interview with The Huffington Post, he mentioned he regretted casting Kevin Kline in Wild Wild West, who didn’t want to play a reactionary character. “You want the funny guy and the flat guy,” says Sonnenfeld:

Tommy and I got along great, especially after the first movie and he saw how funny he could be by trusting me. He didn’t like my direction while we were working because he thought I was trying to make him not be funny….You want the funny guy and the flat guy. Cary Grant is the most brilliant comedy actor there is because he’s never trying to be funny.

When you rewatch Bad Boys or Men in Black, it’s obvious how Smith became the star that he is. His charisma level in the right role can still be off the charts, but his early work drips of pure movie star charm. His playful style of acting at the time meshed perfectly with the deadpan Jones. They’re the kind of great performances that make it difficult to imagine anyone else in those roles.

President Donald Trump on Thursday dug up a months-old tweet from Rosie O’Donnell to quip about FBI Director James Comey’s recent firing.

O’Donnell’s tweet, from December 20, 2016 read: “FIRE COMEY.”

The tweet ostensibly referenced consternation among some Democrats who believed Comey’s public comments about an investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server cost her the White House.

“Rosie, we finally agree on something,” Trump tweeted Thursday.

O’Donnell later told MSNBC that Trump’s tweet was “a clear indication of his seriously declining mental health.”

The tweet was just another wrinkle in the decade-long feud Trump and O’Donnell have had, which precedes Trump’s career in politics and dates back to a disagreement about the handling of an incident involving one of Trump’s beauty queens.

Here are the exchanges between O’Donnell and Trump over the years.

It started in 2006 when the reigning Miss USA, Tara Conner, was accused of drug-use. Trump called a press conference to discuss her fate, where he decided not to take her crown.

Rosie O’Donnell was not happy with that decision. As a co-host on ABC’s “The View,” O’Donnell slammed Trump, bringing up his bankruptcy allegations, his multiple marriages, and called him a “snake-oil salesman.”

Trump wasn’t happy about that. He fired back in People magazine, calling O’Donnell “a real loser” and “a woman out of control.” He threatened to sue her and said he looked forward “to taking lots of money from my nice, fat little Rosie.”

People on social media suggested O’Donnell for the role, and she responded enthusiastically.

 

For now the Grim Reaper plays Steve Bannon on “SNL,” in a dark joke about the strategist, though we don’t know who’s under the costume. In the next sketch starring Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump — and hopefully Melissa McCarthy as press secretary Sean Spicer, given her hilarious performance over the weekend — the Grim Reaper could show up and remove the mask, revealing O’Donnell. 

On Sunday morning, O’Donnell sang McCarthy’s praises after seeing her performance as Spicer.

If this whole thing plays out, it would not be surprising to see angry tweets about it from Trump’s personal Twitter account. 

The feud between the two started in 2006 when O’Donnell criticized Trump on “The View,” and the two tweet criticisms of each other often. Trump has called O’Donnell “a real loser” and “a woman out of control.”
