THE PERFORMER | Grant Gustin THE SHOW | The Flash THE EPISODE | “The Last Temptation of Barry Allen, Pt. 1” (Nov. 26, 2019) THE PERFORMANCE | When you torture Barry Allen, you torture all of us. But under the category of “silver lining,” you also, without fail, elicit an especially moving performance by Grant Gustin. As if Barry didn’t have enough to worry about with the looming Crisis/his unavoidable death and all, this week he found himself face to face with Dr. Ramsey Rosso, for a conversation that took a darkly surreal turn. Barry got his first sense that something was amiss when Ramsey casually revealed that he is aware of the CSI’s superhero identity. Then, the view from the West-Allens’ loft window turned suddenly apocalyptic, in the vein of the fiery Crisis that Barry sneak-peeked earlier in the season. Eventually, the Speed Force — in the form of Barry’s late mother Nora (Michelle Harrison, again helping bring out some of Gustin’s finest work) — informed Barry that his cells had been infected by Rosso, who aimed to take control of Flash. As this stark terror dawned on Barry, Gustin conveyed every bit of the hero’s despair. Usually, Barry emerges triumphant over such a setback. But the resolution here was far from as simple. No, Ramsey used the infection to skew his victim’s perception of truth, and Gustin had us wincing at Barry’s susceptibility. All the while, the Speed Force urged Barry to resist. A tug-of-war for his free will was afoot, and as Barry was figuratively torn, so were our hearts. Team Flash for a fleeting moment thought Barry fended off Ramsey’s takeover. But with a final, very unsettling button on his performance, Gustin added just enough coldness to tip off Iris, and us, that the beloved Barry had in fact lost. THE PERFORMER | Josh O’Connor THE SHOW | The Crown THE EPISODE | “Imbroglio” (Nov. 17, 2019) THE PERFORMANCE | Netflix’s sumptuous royal drama can always be counted on to boast more great performances than the Queen has Corgis, and Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham Carter were indeed superb in their debut season as Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret. But another member of the royal family grabbed our attention in Season 3: Elizabeth’s eldest son Prince Charles, with O’Connor painting a captivatingly empathetic portrait of the king in waiting. O’Connor shined throughout the season, but he peaked in Episode 9, as Charles’ romance with a young Camilla Shand became a hot topic at Buckingham Palace. O’Connor was downright giddy as Charles confessed his feelings to his widowed great aunt Wallis, but she gave him a stern warning: “Watch out for your family.” And she was right: Charles’ relatives conspired to ship him overseas, to keep him and Camilla apart. The Prince of Wales is typically a buttoned-up chap, but O’Connor tapped into a deep wellspring of rage as Charles unloaded on his mother, his voice cracking with emotion as he accused her of trying to break him and Camilla up. Later, Charles learned that Camilla is still in love with her ex Andrew, and O’Connor let us see Charles’ heart shatter right in front of our eyes, Ralph Wiggum-style. It’s a level of emotion we might not have even imagined Prince Charles is capable of, based on his public persona, but that’s the power of O’Connor’s portrayal: His carefully honed work here helps us see the Prince of Wales in an entirely new light. It can’t be easy trying to act alongside heavyweights like Colman and Bonham Carter, but O’Connor proved he’s more than fit to wear the crown. Which performance(s) knocked your socks off this week? HONORABLE MENTION | What Watchmen‘s June said in Sunday’s episode was true: William Reeves was an angry man. And a closeted one. And a brave one. And Jovan Adepo, who was tasked with bringing Will’s prior traumas to life, blended all of these facets to give us a stunning black-and-white portrait of a man pushed past his limits. He took Will from a naïve New York City Police neophyte to an embittered masked crusader in the space of an hour, imbuing every gesture with the frustration he felt at having to hide who he truly was in order to make everyone else feel comfortable. The crescendo — Will’s unrelenting takedown of the Cyclops warehouse followed by his devastation at seeing his son donning the white makeup — was a thing of brutal beauty. Adepo deserves all the kudos coming his way and more.
HONORABLE MENTION | Spencer and Corey’s saga of heartache and regret reached a beautiful yet tragic conclusion on Monday’s All American, a devastating hour that solidified Daniel Ezra as one of the finest performers ever to grace The CW. Spencer and his father’s long-awaited reconciliation was a cathartic moment, both for them and for the audience, so when their future as a family was suddenly ripped away, our hearts didn’t just break — they shattered. The guttural wail Spencer released upon discovering his father’s lifeless body slumped in his living room chair will remain with us for a long time.
HONORABLE MENTION | For years, NCIS: Los Angeles has invited us to be invested in the Eric/Nell relationship, but no single episode has moved the needle as much as last week’s, which in turn gave Barrett Foa and Renée Felice Smith some great material. As an oblivious (and caffeine-infused) abduction target, Boa really got to lean into the comedy, exasperating his NonCIS captors to the point of amusement and/or downright irritation. Smith meanwhile made us feel both Nell’s anxiety and her determination to rescue her love. When Eric eventually returned to HQ, he was met by the team’s expected pleasantries, but once alone with Nell, Smith really brought it home, expressing with every of her being how much Nell missed, and misses, her partner in Ops and more.

Trump-backed Republican Sen. Troy Balderson held a narrow lead over his Democratic challenger, Danny O’Connor in Tuesday night’s special election in Ohio’s 12th congressional district. With 100% of precincts reporting, Balderson led the race by nearly 1,800 ballots, in a deep-red district that Donald Trump won by 11 points in the 2016 presidential election.
Balderson is expected to take the House seat abandoned by Republican Rep. Pat Tiberi, who announced his resignation in October, midway through his term.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

AFTER years of suffering with a serious eating disorder, Irish playwright and actress Eva O’Connor is speaking out to help others.![]()
After a lengthy search, Warner Bros. and DC Films have finally hired a director for Suicide Squad 2: Gavin O’Connor, the man behind movies like The Accountant, Miracle, and Pride and Glory. Find out more about the new Suicide Squad 2 director below.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news about O’Connor directing the antihero sequel, as well as the fact that O’Connor has also been tapped to write the movie’s screenplay. That whooshing sound you hear? That’s a huge sigh of relief coming from WB executive board rooms, because Suicide Squad 2 has been a priority for the studio ever since it made $ 745 million worldwide during its theatrical run. They’ve been having trouble locking someone in to direct, first flirting with Mel Gibson before choosing The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra…only to have Collet-Serra bail before signing on and head across town to direct Dwayne Johnson in Disney’s Jungle Cruise movie.
O’Connor is a fine choice, someone who’s already in the WB stable and who recently had a hit with The Accountant – so much so that he’s still attached to direct that movie’s sequel. Before that, he stepped in to wrangle the troubled production of Jane Got a Gun, but that movie didn’t make a peep when it finally crawled into theaters. For my money, though, O’Connor’s best film is 2011’s Warrior, an under-seen family sports drama about two brothers who face off in an MMA tournament that features excellent performances from Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, and Nick Nolte. Seek it out if you haven’t seen it, and you’ll instantly understand why O’Connor was on everyone’s short lists to direct big blockbusters for a little while after that film came out.
Suicide Squad 2 will feature the return of Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), the villainous Joker (Jared Leto), and presumably the rest of the antihero squad: Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), and Diablo (Jay Hernandez). Slipknot, we barely knew ye.
Not long ago, Kinnaman said that the plan was to shoot this sequel sometime in 2018, so it’s a good thing they’ve locked someone in early. David Ayer’s first Suicide Squad movie was an utter mess (he’s since moved on to Gotham City Sirens), and its production problems have been extensively documented, so hopefully O’Connor will have enough time to write and prep this sequel and give himself a fighting chance to make a strong follow-up.
What do you think? Is O’Connor a good choice to write and direct Suicide Squad 2?

TROUBLE-PRONE former Wallaby James O’Connor has escaped major sanction but must attend behavioural awareness training after French rugby officials finalised his punishment for a cocaine bust in Paris earlier this year.
The French national rugby league has just handed down its decision on sanctions for O’Connor, and his friend and former All Black Ali Williams, after they were arrested by police in a drugs sting at a Parisian nightclub near the Arc de Triomphe in February.

Williams, 35, who was alleged to have bought a small amount of cocaine from dealers outside L’arc nightclub, was fined 1500 euros ($ 2000) by league headquarters.
He was earlier sacked by his club Racing 92.
O’Connor, who was fined by police for using cocaine, not for buying or possessing it, was not fined by the league, but instead ordered to attend behavioural awareness programs alongside Williams.

The 26-year-old was suspended by his club, Toulon, after the arrest, but is now playing again. His contract expires shortly and his future is not clear although it is widely reported that his contract will not be renewed.
As he left the disciplinary hearing a week ago, O’Connor told waiting media: “I have given all the evidence, and I think they will understand that I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, so yes, I’m sure it will work out.”

SPECULATION that troubled Australian player James O’Connor’s rugby career at Toulon is finished has been heightened after the club left him out of the team to play this weekend.
It was the second match the 26-year-old has missed since being arrested and placed in custody two weeks ago after being caught in a cocaine bust by undercover police outside a chic Parisian nightclub.

The former Wallaby, who plays for French club Toulon in the Top 14 league, was initially suspended by the club for a week, but no updates have been given about his future.
He and the mate he was arrested with, All Black Ali Williams, who plays for French side Racing 92, will be hauled before the French NRL disciplinary committee on March 29, according to league president Paul Goze.
O’Connor was fined for using cocaine and Williams, 35, was charged with purchasing 2.4 grams of the drug, and will appear in court at a later date.

Toulon club owner and president Mourad Boudjallel, who was originally expected to reveal what future, if any, O’Connor had with the club on Tuesday, has dodged questions all week about his plans for the fullback, who was temporarily suspended last week while the club decided his fate.
Rumours have been circulating that O’Connor, whose contract with Toulon ends in July, would either be asked to move on, or accept a greatly reduced pay packet.

Super rugby clubs in England are thought to have expressed some interest in O’Connor.
He is understood to have wanted to return to Australia but his latest indiscretion, following off-field incidents in Australia which saw his Wallabies contract torn up, will likely have put off any potential suitors.
Another Australian player who has previously been disciplined for using cocaine in Australia, Ben Barba, has been named in the squad for Toulon’s home game against Bayonne.

AUSTRALIAN rugby player James O’Connor will find out next week if he has a future with French club Toulon after he was suspended today following his arrest for using cocaine during a night out in Paris.
O’Connor, 26, met club president Mourad Boudjallel a short time ago and was told he was suspended for a week, meaning he will miss this weekend’s crucial match against Brive in France’s Top 14 league.

A further meeting has been scheduled for next week to give the club time to make a final decision on his future.
He is out of contract in July and had been in negotiations with Toulon to renew it, although was also thought to be in talks with several Australian clubs.
O’Connor was arrested alongside his mate, former All Black Ali Williams, outside a Paris nightclub at 3am last Saturday by plain-clothed police who allege Williams purchased 2.4 grams of cocaine from a dealer while O’Connor allegedly kept watch.

In a statement, RC Toulon said: “as he previously announced, Mourad Boudjallel wanted to meet his player before taking any decision concerning him.’’
Toulon held a closed training session today which O’Connor did not attend.
