Rising levels of carbon dioxide in seawater could be a major threat to the planet’s shellfish population, with a new study showing how the pollutant stunts growth and strips away the protective shields of marine life. In a joint project by the UK’s University of Plymouth and the University of Tsukuba in Japan, researchers analysed the effect of the pollutant from a natural gas vent on the sea snail charonia lampas, or triton shellfish. READ MORE: Lobster pot: Restaurant gets shellfish high on marijuana prior to cooking Famous for its large colorful shell, the triton was once harvested for jewelry, like necklaces. The unique shellfish is now facing a very different and encompassing threat in the form of increasing carbon dioxide in the planet’s oceans. According to the new study, which featured in the peer-reviewed Frontiers in Marine Science journal, tritons were smaller in seawaters predicted to absorb higher levels of Co2. There is also a threat to the animal’s protective shell which is used to ward off potential predators. Thickness of triton shells displayed “visible deterioration” in waters off Shikine-jima island, Japan, where scientists studying ocean acidification have previously visited a gas vent near near Mikawa Bay. READ MORE: Woman lucky to survive after flying fish slits her throat (PHOTOS) Dr Ben Harvey, assistant professor in the University of Tsukuba’s Shimoda Marine Research Center, said the acidification of oceans is a “clear threat to marine life.” “Here we found that the ability of the triton shells to produce and maintain their shells was hindered by ocean acidification, with the corrosive seawater making them smoother, thinner, and less dense,” he explained. The evidence uncovered by researchers signals “profound consequences” for calcified sea creatures in the future, Harvey warned. Like this story? Share it with a friend!
Florence, a Category 2 hurricane that has already prompted massive evacuations in the US, is far from being the only one roaming through the Atlantic. Another hurricane, Helene, is devolving in the eastern part of the ocean and moving northeast towards Europe, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) says. However, this Category 1 hurricane is expected to lose steam before it actually arrives at Europe’s shores, as the scientists believe it will eventually come to the western part of the continent in a form of a storm early next week.
Meanwhile, in the Caribbean Sea, a tropical storm Isaac is making its way through the Lesser Antilles as its wind speed reaches more than 70 kilometers per hour. However, it is also expected to lose power and arrive in Jamaica in a form of a tropical depression next Monday.
Another storm, Joyce, has also formed in the Atlantic Ocean and is now heading towards the Portuguese islands of the Azores, where, according to NHC forecasts, it will arrive as a tropical depression early next week.
The Atlantic, however, has more potentially unpleasant surprises up its sleeve. On Thursday, meteorologists recorded a disturbance in the center of the Gulf of Mexico that in the next 48 hours could become yet another tropical storm.
It is also not the only part of the Northern hemisphere hit by foul weather. In the Pacific Ocean, the super typhoon Mangkhut is approaching the northern part of the Philippines, where the authorities have already ordered evacuations. Meteorologist Tim Heller has tweeted that during his 35-year career he has “never seen so much activity in the tropics all at the same time.”

The oceans are “exploding with cyclonic activity,” The Washington Post says in an article explaining that the simultaneous formation of several storms in the Atlantic is due to the sudden alignment of two factors: energy and wind. Strong winds in the atmosphere can prevent the development of storms at the lower altitudes but now the winds in all these regions are mild. In addition, wind shear has reached its seasonal minimum, causing any incipient tropical disturbance to become a storm.

The cast of the Ocean’s 11 franchise is quite the star-studded ensemble. But on top of the core members of the heist team led by George Clooney, the franchise has also featured some cameos by familiar faces, and one of them nearly appeared in all three of the films from director Steven Soderbergh.
Topher Grace appears in both Ocean’s 11 and Ocean’s 12 as an exaggerated version of himself, and it turns out he was meant to make an appearance in Ocean’s 13, but his role as Eddie Brock (AKA the villain Venom) in Spider-Man 3 kept him from making what would have been another hilarious cameo in the film franchise. Thankfully, Grace has revealed what that cameo would have entailed.
Before we get to the Topher Grace Ocean’s 13 cameo, let’s remember his cameos in the other movies:
In Ocean’s 11, Topher Grace appears as himself as one of several young celebrities learning how to play poker better from Rusty (Brad Pitt). Around the table are also Joshua Jackson (Dawson’s Creek), Holly Marie Combs (Charmed), Shane West (A Walk to Remember), and Barry Watson (7th Heaven). They’re all terrible at the game, especially Topher, who tries to win with a hand that’s “all reds” but nowhere close to a straight, flush or anything resembling a decent hand.
I love the kinds of cameos where celebs make fun of themselves, appearing to be dimwitted Hollywood stars who can’t do anything themselves. Grace explained to The Film Stage that this cameo came about when he was doing ADR for Traffic, his first movie role, also directed by Steven Soderbergh. The director asked him if he wanted to do something in Ocean’s 11, and the rest is history.
At the beginning of Ocean’s 12, Rusty is responding to some kind of situation in one of the hotels he runs. The problem turns out to be Topher Grace having a total breakdown and trashing his hotel room. His hair is long, he’s wearing many bracelets, and he’s hung up on some girl. He also quit That 70s Show and “totally phoned in” his role in the film In Good Company with Dennis Quaid and Scarlett Johansson.
Funnily enough, Dennis Quaid had been in Traffic, but the real payoff here was that the trailer for In Good Company was playing before Ocean’s 12, which made that joke work on a fantastic level when people saw the movie in theaters.

So what would a Topher Grace Ocean’s 13 cameo have entailed? The actor revealed to The Film Stage that it would have added another perplexing layer of instability to the life of his fictional self:
“The thing I can tell you that no one else knows is that in Ocean’s Thirteen, which I couldn’t do because of Spider-Man, I was gonna see Rusty [Pitt’s character] going into a casino and I was gonna stop him and the whole time I was going to be holding an Asian baby but we weren’t gonna say anything about it. The first was one was cars, second was wreck a hotel a room, and the third one was that.”
I love that this was a running gag that was meant to continue. And that it all resulted from the fact that Topher Grace happened to be at the right place at the right time is just so perfectly Hollywood.

Now look, I’m not suggesting that Ocean’s 8 is nearly as putrid as American Pie Presents: Band Camp– it’s an absolutely good-enough piece of summer fluff, and it’s probably some sort of blasphemy to invoke a title like that anywhere near the vicinity of a cast like this. But again, once it was in my head, it was hard to get it out. The similarities (tone, pair of shared supporting characters, sibling-driving plot) are the same here as in the original Ocean’s trilogy: Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) is fresh out of the joint, where she’s concocted an elaborate and ingenious heist that will not only make her and her team of super-crooks rich, but will settle a personal score to boot. Yet it feels like a warmed-over retread, lacking the personal touches and bits of pizzazz that made that original trilogy so special.

You can’t fault the cast, which does their very best with the thin script by Olivia Milch and director Gary Ross. Bullock is ideally cast – she is absolutely the female equivalent of Mr. Clooney, who has a similar breezy, offhand way of delivering his cocky line readings in these things. Cate Blanchett is magnetic and unflappable, Helena Bonham-Carter is uproarious, and Akwafina steals pretty much any scene she wanders into. The standout, however, is Anne Hathaway, with a portrait of movie-star vanity and self-absorption that’s so marvelously self-aware, I’m not sure why they bothered to give her character another name. (This is, after all, the series in which Julia Roberts once played both her character and herself.) She has a tiny moment of ecstasy, when first trying on the necklace at the heist’s center, that’s so simultaneously funny and sexy, you’ll wish she’d been born early enough to do a couple dozen screwball comedies.
To its credit, Ross and Milch’s script has a couple of good lines (“Aren’t there any hackers who aren’t Russian?” “There are barely any Russians who aren’t hackers”) and clever details, and the job itself is quite satisfying – as one character notes, “It’s always the grace notes and the little attention to detail that really makes the whole thing sing.” And there’s one funny, tacit acknowledgment of a lightweight movie like this in the swirl of discussion about onscreen representation, a pep talk in which Bullock advises her crew not to do this for themselves or each other: “Somewhere out there, there’s an eight-year-old girl in bed dreaming of being a criminal. Do this for her.”

Perhaps if there were more bits like that, in which Ross and his ace ensemble allowed themselves to untether from the franchise and do their own thing, Ocean’s 8 wouldn’t feel like such a pale imitation. But it follows those films, particularly the first one, so closely that it ends up inviting unflattering comparisons. The first scene (it’s in the trailers), in which Ms. Ocean assures her parole board that she’s a changed person, is a virtual carbon copy of Ocean’s Eleven’s opening – so it’s that much more noticeable that whereas original director Steven Soderbergh staged and shot it with mood and flair, Ross makes it look like an episode of Law & Order. Soderbergh’s novelty wipes and transitions are aped nearly as poorly, and the script keeps replicating the beats of Ted Griffin’s Eleven script (Bullock’s reunion with former and now slumming partner Blanchett, in the Brad Pitt role; a scene where Blanchett calls Bullock out for jeopardizing the job by making it personal) with equal parts laziness and clumsiness. James Corden appears late in the film, extending the narrative as a tireless investigator, a postscript that unavoidably recalls Soderbergh’s more recent heist pic, Logan Lucky. And I’m sorry, it’s impossible to set the climax of a heist movie in the Met without making your audience think of that wonderful Thomas Crown Affairremake.
There’s nothing automatically wrong with a film that echoes its predecessors – the heist movie in particular is built on the foundation of cinematic tradition – but Ocean’s 8, in scene after scene, is done no favors by the reminders. Or maybe the point is that Soderbergh (who is credited as a producer here) was able to not only execute those grace notes, but to do them with such effervescence that it looked easy. It clearly isn’t; Ross isn’t light on his feet the way Soderbergh is, so the picture drags, and he keeps muffing the half-hearted buttons, leaving scenes that just kinda peter out.
It’s a shame. Ocean’s 8 isn’t offensively bad, and there are long stretches that basically work. But with this premise, and this cast, it should’ve been an all-timer. I kept waiting for it to become that. And then it ended.
“Ocean’s 8” is out today in wide release.

Reviews for “Ocean’s 8” are in, but the reception has been lukewarm.
The “Ocean’s 11″ spin-off follows Debra Ocean (Sandra Bullock), the estranged sister of George Clooney‘s iconic character Danny Ocean, as she tries to pull off a heist at the Met Gala. She pairs up with a team of talented women — played by Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, and Awkwafina — to steal from Anne Hathaway’s celebrity character. At the beginning of every year, director Steven Soderbergh releases a list of everything he watched and read the previous year. As far as lists go, Soderbergh’s are always fascinating, particularly because he tends to rewatch specific titles over and over again. His new list for 2017 is here, and reveals that so far he’s watched Ocean’s 8, the reboot of his Ocean’s 11 franchise, nine times already. Check out Steven Soderbergh’s 2017 list below.
If you’ve ever wondered about the movie-watching and reading habits of filmmakers, look no further than Steven Soderbergh’s annual list. Soderbergh, the filmmaker behind Traffic, Haywire, Logan Lucky and the Ocean’s 11 films, has an annual tradition of uploading a list to his website that reflects everything he watched or read through the previous year.
Soderbergh’s latest list, reflecting what he read and watched in 2017, is a doozy. There’s a lot to unpack here: the filmmaker took in the gonzo 2017 film A Cure For Wellness in June; on Christmas day, he treated himself to a triple feature of Memento, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Vertigo; and on June 26, he rewatched the phenomenal eighth episode of the new Twin Peaks, which lead him to add the only annotation on the list: “(episode 8 again—wow!)”.
The list also offers some insight into films Soderbergh is associated with: on June 1, he lists that he’s begun production on his new film Unsane, and then proceeds to list Unsane five more times – likely indicating he was rewatching the footage he shot on those particular days. Also worth noting: Soderbergh lists the upcoming Ocean’s 8 – a reboot/sequel to his own Ocean’s 11 franchise – a total of nine times. Check out the full list below.

“We’re embarking on a new path for energy dominance in America, particularly on offshore,” Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said Thursday as he unveiled the plan, according to the New York Times. “This is a clear difference between energy weakness and energy dominance. We are going to become the strongest energy superpower.”
Zinke’s plan is considered the most ambitious offshore drilling proposal in decades, and is a consequence of President Donald Trump’s executive order in April encouraging more drilling rights in federal waters.
Under the 2019-2024 leasing program, 90 percent of the total US Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) would be made available and more than 98 percent of federal offshore areas would be available for oil and gas development. Currently, 94 percent of the OCS is considered off-limits.
Under the draft proposal, which will be available for public input, the US government is looking to lease 47 parcels, 19 off the coast of Alaska, 12 in the Gulf of Mexico, nine in the Atlantic and seven in the Pacific Region.

In Alaska, the plan would open up areas in the Beaufort Sea, Cook Inlet, Gulf of Alaska, and Kodiak, among others. No sales are proposed in the North Aleutian Basin Planning Area.
In the Pacific, leases are proposed in Northern California, Central and Southern California and Washington/Oregon.
The proposal would lift a ban on drilling imposed by President Barack Obama in his final days in office, protecting more than 100 million offshore acres along the Arctic and Eastern Seaboard. Leases would be offered in the Mid- and South Atlantic, North and the Straits of Florida. There have been no sales since 1983 and there are no existing leases in these areas.
Oil industry leaders praised the proposal, calling it long overdue.
“I think the default should be that all of our offshore areas should be available,” said Thomas Pyle, president of the American Energy Alliance, according to the New York Times. He said seismic testing would be needed to assess potential oil and gas reserves in the Atlantic Ocean, though it could take years before potential testing permits are issued.
“These are our lands,” Pyle said. “They’re taxpayer-owned and they should be made available.”
The expansion is likely to trigger huge political backlash, particularly on the West Coast and in Florida. Offshore drilling has generated sharp opposition from residents, environmental groups and businesses who fear a spills – such as BP’s in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 – could devastate beaches and destroy the tourist industry that is vital to the regional economies.

Frank Knapp, president of the Business Alliance for Protecting the Coast, told the Times that hundreds of small East Coast businesses, from restaurants to hotels to commercial fishing operations, have mobilized against allowing drilling off their state waters.
“It’s not consistent with our vibrant tourism, fishing and recreation. That’s what the East Coast is,” Knapp said. “Their concern is their livelihood, the local economies. We all saw what happened to the Gulf Coast with Deepwater Horizon.”
Finalizing the plan may take as long as 18 months, with public meetings slated to begin around the country on January 16. Venues and times will be posted on the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s website.

Though Soderbergh is only producing this time around, director Gary Ross and co-writer Olivia Milch genuinely seem to have honed in on the giddy energy of the Ocean’s series, thanks to its high style, gorgeous costumes, whip-smart humor, and ace ensemble (Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson and Awkwafina). And sure, it’ would’ve been swell if they could’ve found a woman to, y’know, direct, and James Corden is in there (why?), and though he’s not in the trailer, Matt Damon reportedly makes a cameo, at exactly the moment when we maybe don’t want to see him in a movie about women. But still! Looks like fun!
Ocean’s 8 hits theaters on June 8th, so we’ve only got six months of trailer down-voting and Rotten Tomatoes audience score campaigns orchestrated by men who’ll never know the touch of a real woman, and thus lash out against fictional ones. Enjoy!
