Nearly 100 years after it was taken in a German village, the photo shed light on a family secret that connected Heibel to a cousin he had never known in faraway Tennessee.

In this centennial year marking the end of World War I, the discovery illuminates a postwar occupation of Germany that most Americans have never heard of: A quarter-million U.S. troops, including the men in the photo carried by Heibel’s father, held some 2,500 square miles of Rhineland for four years after the November 1918 armistice that ended the fighting. The American troops were deployed, along with French, Belgian and British troops in other military zones, to ensure Germany didn’t resume attacks to the west if negotiations failed to reach a final peace agreement at Versailles.

The photo shows seven American doughboys, with one kneeling in front of the others. They were part of the Cooks and Mechanics section of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division of the U.S. Army. The photo was taken in 1919 in the village of Bannberscheid, about 47 miles southeast of Bonn. Heibel still lives nearby.

A lot of relationships were kept secret until these women started getting pregnant. That put the Army in a bind.

Alexander Barnes, author and command historian, Virginia National Guard

During the occupation, U.S. Army soldiers were billeted in private homes. The military struggled, mostly unsuccessfully, to prevent “fraternization” between soldiers and local women. Among the more famous offspring of the era is the provocative late writer Charles Bukowski, born not far from Bannberscheid, in Andernach, on Aug. 16, 1920.

While many couples married, other American soldiers either didn’t know their liaisons had produced children before they were shipped back to the U.S. or didn’t own up to it, says Alexander Barnes, command historian for the Virginia National Guard and author of the illustrated book In a Strange Land: The American Occupation of Germany 1918–1923.

Heibel had learned his family secret — that his paternal grandfather was an American soldier — but nothing more. Two years before his father, Erwin Heibel, died in 2003, Heibel asked him about his life.

Erwin, who was born in 1920, revealed that he’d learned the identity of his birth father only when he was 23, home from the Russian front during World War II and about to marry the woman who became Johannes’ mother. The ceremonial personal registry that German families use to record milestones had no entry for Erwin’s father. His mother, born Frieda Keil, had let him believe that her German husband, Paul Johann Heibel, was his father. Frieda was still alive, but it was her sister who broke the news to Erwin.

“That was earth-shattering for my father,” Heibel says. “He realized that many people in that little village must have known. Only he didn’t know.”

Frieda died in 1956 without revealing her American lover’s name, and Erwin tried without success in the 1950s and ’60s to find his birth father, Heibel says. In 2001, he showed Johannes a photo his aunt had given him — seven American soldiers posing in front of the home of Frieda’s parents. Frieda’s sister had said the kneeling man was Erwin’s father. But no one knew his name.

Unnamed copy

“A lot of relationships were kept secret until these women started getting pregnant,” Barnes says. “That put the Army in a bind.” Should they punish the soldier and ship him home, or evict the woman from the occupation zone? Either way, they’d be forcibly separating a father- and mother-to-be. Letters from German town officials to the U.S. Army show efforts to track down soldiers to pay child support.

Johannes Heibel contacted Barnes when his book was published in 2011. The author scoured Army archives and contacted dozens of military historians. One noticed the men in the photo held meat cleavers, bone saws and other implements, and Barnes discovered a cooks and mechanics unit had been housed in Bannberscheid. He found a few possible names, but none panned out.

Finally, Barnes suggested Heibel get his DNA tested in hopes of finding a matching relative somewhere in the world. A month later, the results turned up a close match with David Harstin, now 58, a United Methodist pastor in Bethel Springs, Tennessee. “That was more than a wonder,” Heibel says.

The two men began to correspond. Harstin knew his maternal grandfather, Lester Denton of North Carolina, and his younger brother Paul Harding Denton, had served in the Army during World War I and after in the postwar occupation during the time Erwin would have been conceived. And Paul had been billeted in Frieda’s town. Further DNA testing confirmed it: Paul Denton was Johannes’ mysterious grandfather.

harstin and heibel together

Barnes hasn’t found a specific document describing the circumstances under which Paul returned to the U.S. in mid-1919, so it remains a mystery whether he knew of Frieda’s pregnancy. Harstin, who served in a U.S. Army Pershing ballistic missile unit in Germany during the Cold War, said he learned Paul had been gassed during World War I and contracted tuberculosis. Records also show that Paul was captured, apparently briefly, by the enemy. After returning from Germany, Paul married, but died prematurely.

Heibel and Harstin met for the first time this month, as Harstin and his wife visited Germany to be interviewed for a German TV documentary to air later this year on descendants of the era and German-American relations since then. Heibel, 62, and his wife greeted their American visitors at the Frankfurt Airport with hugs — and a friend to help translate.

“It was immediate affection,” says Harstin. Adds Heibel, it was “as if we already knew each other forever.”

Sudo-history: BoJo likens Crimea’s accession to Russia to Nazis’ occupation of Czechoslovakia https://briefnews.eu/sudo-history-bojo-likens-crimeas-accession-to-russia-to-nazis-occupation-of-czechoslovakia/ https://briefnews.eu/sudo-history-bojo-likens-crimeas-accession-to-russia-to-nazis-occupation-of-czechoslovakia/#respond Sun, 25 Mar 2018 15:32:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sudo-history-bojo-likens-crimeas-accession-to-russia-to-nazis-occupation-of-czechoslovakia/ UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson seems to have become fixated on comparing Russia with Nazi Germany. Most recently, he has likened Crimea’s reunification with Russia to Hitler’s annexation of the Sudetenland.

The trouble with raising the specter of an enemy is that one can very easily take it too far. Johnson has apparently been so gripped by hysterical Russophobia that he has started seeing parallels between Russia and its sworn enemy, the Third Reich.

In his latest outburst to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, he went as far as to claim that Crimea joining Russia, following an overwhelmingly supportive referendum in March 2014, was similar to the partial occupation of what was then Czechoslovakia by Hitler’s forces back in 1938. Johnson then claimed that it was “wholly apposite” to draw such comparisons between the Nazis then and Russia now.

“Russia annexed a sovereign European territory,” the foreign secretary said of Crimea. He then emphatically pointed out that “we did not do anything about the Sudetenland, you know,” referring to European leaders’ decision to allow the peripheral Czechoslovak territories to be annexed by the Nazis. Later on, using their position behind the Czechoslovak defenses, the Wehrmacht were able to enter Prague unopposed.

Johnson warned that Europe’s failure to stand up to what he called Russia’s “pattern of provocative behavior” would encourage the Kremlin in its “revanchist feeling.” He attempted to scare Europe further by claiming that a lack of action on Moscow’s “assertive” policy would be similar to the appeasement of Adolf Hitler.

As he made his far-reaching conclusions, Johnson completely neglected one fact: It was the West, namely France and the UK itself, which “sold” Czechoslovakia to Hitler by signing the 1938 Munich Agreement. Better known as the ‘Munich Betrayal’, the treaty allowed Nazi Germany to annex parts of Czechoslovakia.

The pact was signed by Hitler and Italian Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini – as well as Britain’s then-Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and his French counterpart Edouard Daladier. Notable by its absence was the Soviet Union, and even Czechoslovakia’s leadership did not take part in the negotiations on the agreement.

The British media has apparently fallen victim to this selective historical amnesia. The Daily Express, for example, briefly mentioned in its piece that Chamberlain merely “refused to intervene” when Hitler’s forces occupied the territory.

It is not the first time Johnson has allowed himself to make such far-fetched comparisons. On March 21, he likened Russia’s hosting of this year’s World Cup to the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany, adding that such a “comparison with 1936 is certainly right.”

This provoked an angry reaction from Moscow. The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denounced Johnson’s words as “totally disgusting” and “not appropriate for any foreign minister.”

Johnson is no stranger to statements that encourage a distorted view of Russia. For example, he has publically claimed that getting rid of former spies is just a part of Russian nature. In his opinion piece for the Washington Post, he called the poisoning of double agent Sergei Skripal nothing other than the manifestation of “blatant Russian-ness.”

It almost goes without saying that Johnson never bothered to provide even the slightest proof to substantiate his claims. Instead, he trumpeted the “overwhelming support” that the UK received from other western countries following the poisoning of Skripal. Johnson interpreted this as a clear sign that the whole “Western world” shares his take on Russia’s “provocative behavior.”

On March 4, Skripal, 66, and his 33-year-old daughter were found unconscious on a bench outside a shopping center in the British town of Salisbury. Police later said they had been poisoned with some sort of a Soviet-era nerve agent. London was quick to blame Moscow for the incident and its Western allies were quick to join in, even though no solid evidence of Russian involvement in the incident has been presented so far.

Russia has repeatedly denied having anything to do with the poisoning of Skripal. Moscow has offered cooperation in the probe and demanded the details be shared, as it involves Russian citizens.

Talk to Palestinians or pay price of ‘perpetual occupation’ – German FM to Israel https://briefnews.eu/talk-to-palestinians-or-pay-price-of-perpetual-occupation-german-fm-to-israel/ https://briefnews.eu/talk-to-palestinians-or-pay-price-of-perpetual-occupation-german-fm-to-israel/#respond Thu, 01 Feb 2018 16:09:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/talk-to-palestinians-or-pay-price-of-perpetual-occupation-german-fm-to-israel/ Israel could pay the price for “perpetual occupation and conflict” and face the prospect of being stuck in a “fully-fledged annexation” if it abandons reconciliation with the Palestinians, the German foreign minister has warned.

Speaking in Tel Aviv at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), Germany’s top diplomat Sigmar Gabriel said Israel should finally begin to move things forward in the Arab-Israeli peace process or face the grim prospect of unending conflict in a state of “unequal rights.”

Referring to the two-state solution, which embraces the creation of two sovereign states for Jews and Palestinians, Gabriel said Berlin, “as a friend of Israel,” would like to know if the Jewish state “is not supporting a negotiated solution to this conflict anymore.”

“I ask those who oppose a Palestinian state: how do you want Israel’s future to look like?” he said, adding: “Are you prepared to pay the price of perpetual occupation and conflict – a price that will continue to grow if there is no hope for self-determination on the Palestinian side?”

Many EU members back the creation of a separate Palestinian state as part of the two-state solution, and there is “clearly growing frustration with Israel´s actions” among the Europeans, Gabriel said.

In Germany itself, young people feel “increasingly less inclined to accept what they deem an unfair treatment of the Palestinians,” the diplomat added.

Israel is now facing two prospects – it either bears “the consequences of fully fledged annexation, a one-state reality of unequal rights” or it accepts “a single democratic state between the sea and the river.”

Over the past decades, there have been a number of attempts to broker an Arab-Israeli peace solution, but none have succeeded. Israel is seemingly turning a blind eye to the expansion of Jewish settlements in the annexed West Bank, and is tightening its grip over the Gaza Strip and the rest of Jerusalem.
Germany is worried “by the lack of convincing answers” to questions emanating from the stalled peace process, Gabriel noted, before offering some “good news.”

Berlin “is looking forward to the day when it will be able to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem,” the foreign minister said, then offering an explanation: “But let me add: in two states with Jerusalem as their capital.”

The status of Jerusalem is another stumbling block to making lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. Initially thought to become a city enjoying special international status under an UN mandate, it was occupied and later proclaimed the capital by the Israelis following the 1967 Six-Day War.

Most Western countries do not formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. However, in December last year, US President Donald Trump announced Washington will “acknowledge the obvious” and regard Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. In a statement, Trump left the door open for possible talks, saying: “The United States would support a two-state solution if agreed to by both sides.”

‘5 decades of de-development’: UN report blasts Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands https://briefnews.eu/5-decades-of-de-development-un-report-blasts-israeli-occupation-of-palestinian-lands/ https://briefnews.eu/5-decades-of-de-development-un-report-blasts-israeli-occupation-of-palestinian-lands/#respond Wed, 13 Sep 2017 02:11:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/5-decades-of-de-development-un-report-blasts-israeli-occupation-of-palestinian-lands/

A new strongly-worded UN report has slammed the occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, calling Israeli settlement activity a “major obstacle” to the economic development of the Palestinian territories and a huge stumbling block to a two-state solution.

Israel fought the Six-Day War against Egypt, Jordan and Syria in June 1967. Following the defeat of the Arab forces, Israel redrew the boundary lines, seizing East Jerusalem, the West Bank from the Jordanians, the Golan Heights from Syria, as well as the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt.

Over the next five decades, Israel went on to impose its rule over the Palestinians in the occupied lands, considered illegal under international law. The issue remains at the heart of negotiations for a two-state solution.

The pre-1967 borders are still the primary reference point in any discussions for a peaceful settlement between Israel and the Palestinians.

“Instead of the hoped-for two-State solution envisaged by the United Nations and the international community, occupation is currently even more entrenched, while its complex socio economic toll has worsened over time,” the report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), reads.

The strong-worded report described Israel’s occupation as “five decades of de-development.” UNCTAD further said that Israel has since 1967 steadily “suppressed” the human potential of the Palestinians and denied them the “right to development.”

Recalling the December 2016 UN Security Council resolution demanding an end to the construction of Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian territories, UNCTAD reminded Tel Aviv that the settlements have “no legal validity and constitute a flagrant violation of international law.”

Following the passage of Resolution 2334, Israel suspended its multimillion dollar contribution to a number of UN bodies. The government headed by Benjamin Netanyahu also defiantly embarked on an aggressive settlement expansion course.

This year, Israel “intensified the expansion of settlements and housing units in the occupied West Bank,” the report noted. “Further plans have been announced to build more than 5,000 new housing units and for the retroactive legalization of 4,000 units in settlements and outposts.”

The report also revealed that in 2016, housing construction in the settlements was 40 per cent higher than in 2015, directly impacting on the demographics in the region.

“In recent years, the settler population growth rate has not only surpassed the rate in Israel but also the growth rate of the Palestinian population,” the report said. It added that the settler population has “more than doubled” since 1995, and currently stands at between 600,000 and 750,000 people.

In addition to pointing out the construction of new homes for Jewish settlers, the report also expressed concern over the demolition of Palestinian homes.

“In 2016, more Palestinian structures were demolished in the West Bank than in any other year,” the report stated. Israel demolished or seized 1,094 Palestinian structures resulting in the displacement of over 1,600 Palestinians, half of whom were children, the document said.

Palestinians in the West Bank remain subject to “many forms of violence by settlers,” who in turn are offered preferential treatment, the UN report said.

“There are two parallel legal systems in the occupied West Bank, namely the domestic law of Israel with more guarantees for defendants is applied to Israeli settlers, while Palestinians are subject to Israeli military law. Restrictions on the freedom of movement and access of Palestinians continue to be stringent near settlements,” UNCTAD said.

The UN body argues that restrictions on movement has a “direct impact” on the economy, employment and poverty.

The report also noted a steady decline in Palestinian gross domestic product (GDP) growth for the last 20 years and the theft of Palestinian natural resources by Israel.

‘Unlawful occupation’: Native Americans seek to reclaim ancestral land from Brown University https://briefnews.eu/unlawful-occupation-native-americans-seek-to-reclaim-ancestral-land-from-brown-university/ https://briefnews.eu/unlawful-occupation-native-americans-seek-to-reclaim-ancestral-land-from-brown-university/#respond Tue, 22 Aug 2017 21:53:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/unlawful-occupation-native-americans-seek-to-reclaim-ancestral-land-from-brown-university/

More than 50 members of the Pokanoket Nation and their supporters have set up an encampment in Rhode Island, arguing that the land bequeathed to Brown University was illegally taken from them hundreds of years ago.

Over a dozen tents have been pitched at Po Metacom Camp on Mount Hope, or Potumtuk, a hill overlooking the Narragansett Bay. The activists have brought in firewood, food and water and set up toilet facilities, according to AP.

The Pokanoket Tribe said they will pray for healing and repatriation of their spiritual lands that they claim “Brown University has been unlawfully occupying,” according to video posted by The Fang Collective on social media on Sunday.

“We would like to sit down with Brown University right here on this property and break bread with them and talk about repatriating the lands back to the stewards of the land, the original peoples, the original inhabitants,” Sagamore William Guy (Po Wauipi Neimpaug) said on the video. A tribe’s sagamore is the chief of chiefs.

“We have done everything to engage with the powers at Brown, and they just do not want to talk to us, so this is the next step in trying to reach out. But they’ve acted as though we are an invisible people, so this time was the only means left open to us,” the sagamore said.

The Pokanoket have a pending lawsuit against Bristol and the state of Rhode Island, and have recorded public and constructive notices to the town authorities, according to EarthFirst.

The tribe claims Brown University does not have an aboriginal title to the land. The Wampanoag chief Metacomet (also known as “King Philip”) and his descendants never signed over their right to the land hundreds of years ago, the Pokanoket said in a statement.

In a statement issued Sunday, the Ivy League university said it upholds the right of people to assembly peaceably “provided that their actions do not infringe upon the rights of others.”

Tribe members and supporters have set up checkpoints at the access road to the 375-acre (152-hectare) parcel, which is located about half an hour’s drive from the university campus in Providence. Brown houses an extensive archaeology collection and environmental lab on the grounds.

The university said the land had been donated in parcels over a period of years beginning in the 1950s and it claims the ownership was legally transferred.

Afghan interpreter blown up by Taliban tells of dangers after working with occupation forces https://briefnews.eu/afghan-interpreter-blown-up-by-taliban-tells-of-dangers-after-working-with-occupation-forces/ https://briefnews.eu/afghan-interpreter-blown-up-by-taliban-tells-of-dangers-after-working-with-occupation-forces/#respond Tue, 07 Feb 2017 15:52:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/afghan-interpreter-blown-up-by-taliban-tells-of-dangers-after-working-with-occupation-forces/ A former interpreter with UK forces in Afghanistan who was blown up by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) has told the parliamentary Defence Committee about the dangers now faced by those who worked with occupation forces.

Former ‘terp’ Rafi Hottak was wounded by an IED in 2007 while working with a British military unit and later fled to Britain fearing for his life.

Since the withdrawal of the majority of UK forces from the region, and the collapse of Helmand province following the occupation, many interpreters have been targeted by local militants and some have even been killed.

Afghan interpreters lose court appeal for UK assistance

The majority of requests for relocation coming from soldiers, politicians and interpreters themselves have fallen on deaf ears due to the nature – specifically the cut-off dates – of the agreements made between the UK and locally employed Afghan translators.

Iraqi interpreters, for example, are perceived as having been given a much more favorable resettlement package.

Flanked by a former defense attache to Kabul and a former journalist who covered the UK’s bloody war in Helmand, Hottak said that regardless of whether the attached Afghans were in bases or on patrol, they faced the same risk as British soldiers.

“The enemy looks at interpreters as the eyes and ears of infidel forces. They used to categorize us in the same category, that we are part of the infidel forces,” Hottak told the committee.

“Then they went a step forward… they said that no occupation can be conducted without the help of Afghan interpreters.”

Questioned by Colonel Bob Stewart MP, Hottak said operations which saw houses broken into by soldiers and locals killed were particularly associated with the interpreters.

Hottak said that the risk to British soldiers ended when their tour did, but for an interpreter that risk was a permanent reality until the individual was either dead or relocated.
