A support document from Apple drives another nail in the coffin for the original Apple TV, first introduced in 2007. On May 25, 2018, first-generation Apple TV devices will no longer be able to connect to the iTunes Store due to new security changes to be implemented by Apple. In addition to first-gen Apple TVs, any PCs running Windows XP or Windows Vista will also lose access to the most recent version of iTunes.

According to the document, the “obsolete” original Apple TV won’t be updated in the future to support access to the iTunes Store. After May 25, users will only be able to access iTunes on second-generation Apple TVs and newer streaming devices.

The same security changes affecting the first-gen Apple TV will also affect Windows XP and Vista machines. Users on such devices can still run previous versions of iTunes, so they should still be able to play their music library without problems.

Commercial flights often have two pilots which include a captain and first officer.

This is so that, in the case of an emergency, there is always one person to fly the plane.

It also keeps pilot errors to a minimum when there are two people observing the flight deck.

But could planes one day only have one pilot?

The aviation industry is currently suffering from a shortage of pilots, something that is increasingly becoming a problem.

Whilst flight routes double, the number of those applying to be a pilot has yet to catch up, therefore decreasing the number of pilots needed in a cockpit could help the problem, in theory.

According to the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), all aircraft must be able to be flown by a single pilot, meaning that controls only need one person at a time.

An EU-funded project called the Advanced Cockpit for Reduction of StreSs and workload (ACROSS) is looking into the potential issues that could be raised by single-pilot flights. 

According to Air & Space Mag, the change could mean planes would be made with “smaller, more efficient cockpits”.

It also goes one step further into planes being without pilots altogether and instead run by technology.

Yet both changes incite fears within passengers and experts alike, citing safety concerns.

The 2015 Germanwings crash is one example of the problems that occur when just one pilot is within the cockpit.

Co-pilot Andreas Lubitz locked the captain out of the cabin before crashing the plane into the French Alps.

Boeing 757 is currently testing cargo plans being flown with just one pilot, although Boeing research and technology vice-president Charles Toups told the Guardian that it would take “a couple of decades” for passengers to be happy with a single-pilot aircraft carrier.

A pilot recently debunked a popular flying myth that planes can already fly without pilots altogether.

US pilot Patrick Smith told Traveller: “One of my biggest pet peeves is the public’s widely held belief that jetliners essentially fly themselves.

“Travellers have come to have a vastly exaggerated sense of the capabilities of present-day cockpit technology, and they greatly misunderstand how pilots interface with that technology.”

Brands are dead, or they might be in the future.

According to Aaron Shapiro, the CEO of the marketing firm Huge, brands will take a backseat as technology like artificial intelligence and machine learning become more prevalent.

“As machines start to take more decisions for people it makes it harder for marketers to figure out how to enter into that equation and how to influence consumer behavior,” Shapiro told Markets Insider. “It’s very disruptive for many companies.”

Artificial intelligence powers technology like Apple’s new face-recognition unlock tool and Google’s smart assistant. AI is in its infancy, but it already is showing up in users’ lives in a big way, which could be a big problem for marketing firms like Shapiro’s.

Shapiro says to understand AI’s impact on brands, picture a futuristic smart fridge. The fridge has cameras to track the food inside, and it sees that your milk is running low. Because it’s connected to your credit card and your preferred online grocery store, it automatically orders new milk based on data it has gathered about your previous shopping habits. The fridge already knows which kind of milk you prefer based on what it’s already seen you buy, so you don’t have to pick the brand or even type of milk to reorder.

“You’re already locked into your preferences, and you’re done,” Shapiro said. “You’re not even deciding what food you want to buy anymore.”

That exact fridge may not exist yet, but it could soon. A Samsung smart fridge already can track your food and can offer recipes based on what’s in your fridge. Visa has said it expects all fridges in the future to be connected to your credit card and have built-in food-delivery capabilities.

But AI won’t just affect your snacking habits. Shapiro said Amazon’s Alexa assistant already let you order products without being too specific.

When asking for more soap, for example, Amazon will pick a soap it thinks you will like based on its algorithm, and while it has you confirm that choice, Amazon already is able to sort through hundreds of brands and pick a soap for you.

“Most of the internet up until today has been about more options,” Shapiro said. “Now with machine learning, it’s not about everything — it’s about the perfect product just for me.”

Shapiro says this means the companies that own the most successful versions of these AI-equipped systems will wield immense power in the future.

That’s probably why Google is working so furiously on its smart assistant. As Shapiro noted, Google’s business today is ad-supported; it sells brands spots at the top of search results. If users stop searching for the best types of soap and instead rely on algorithms to pick out soap for them, Shapiro said, soap brands will stop buying those ads and Google will lose its biggest source of revenue.

When asked what the future of advertising looks like in a world dominated by smart fridges and voice assistants, Shapiro says he doesn’t know but is excited to find out.

“I love technology that makes things simple and more powerful for people,” Shapiro said, alluding to AI. AI, he said, is “both very exciting and really scary if you’re trying to market.”

Kroger is beating Amazon and Walmart in the race to give shoppers a cashier-free shopping experience.

In 2018, the grocery chain is rolling out a new service to 400 stores that will enable shoppers to scan and pay for their items without checkout lanes, registers, or cashiers.

Here’s how it works: shoppers scan the barcodes of items they wish to purchase using a handheld scanner, provided by Kroger, or the chain’s “Scan, Bag, Go” app on any smartphone.

The technology will keep a running tab of shoppers’ total order and offer applicable coupons. It will also eventually alert customers when they walk past an item on their shopping list. 

When customers are finished shopping, they can visit a self-checkout register to pay for their order. Soon, shoppers will be able to skip that step and provide payment through the app instead, the company said. That means they won’t have to stand in line or visit a register at any point during their shopping trip.

Amazon revealed plans in December to introduce a similar technology to its own brick-and-mortar grocery concept, called Amazon Go, which is still in the planning phases.

Walmart is also testing its own cashier-less technology in more than a dozen stores in Texas, Florida, South Dakota, Arkansas, Georgia, and Kentucky.

Kroger will be the first to offer the technology to a mass market, however, when it expands the “Scan, Bag, Go” program to 400 of its more than 2,700 stores in 2018.

It seems like everyone is getting divorced these days. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Anna Faris and Chris Pratt. Great Britain and Europe. But it doesn’t stop there. Fewer and fewer couples are electing to tie the knot in the first place. The number of people in the United States getting married has fallen steadily for decades: Barely half of adults now live with a spouse, down from 70 percent in 1967. And marriage rates are not just falling in the U.S. A United Nations survey of data from more than 100 countries between 1970 and 2005 revealed that marriage rates fell in the vast majority — roughly four-fifths — of them.

A formalized lifetime commitment to one person is certainly starting to feel a bit outdated to some. According to a 2011 Pew Research poll, nearly 40 percent of U.S. respondents agreed that marriage was becoming obsolete, up from 28 percent in 1978.

But marriage rates are not falling across the board. Despite the popular perception that marriage is in decline because of growing educational and employment opportunities for women, one group that is bucking the marriage and divorce trends is college graduates, who may be delaying nuptials but are choosing to marry — and staying married longer — than other Americans. Indeed, there are plenty of financial incentives to think seriously about getting married. “If you care about money,” says Jay Zagorsky, an economist and research scientist at Ohio State University, whose research suggests that people who are cohabiting do not build as much wealth as people who get married, “then marriage is certainly not obsolete.”

Others might argue that the notion of monogamy itself is a relic, giving way to the rise of polyamory.

The future of passport control could lie within a revolutionary new passport app guaranteed to speed up your customs queues.

Airport queues can sometimes be hours long, delaying a trip before it’s even started.

Mobile Passport Control is the first app in the US that claims it can speed up an American citizen’s re-entry to the country.

The official app has been authorised by the US Customs and Borders protection so it’s a legitimate (and free) way to help travellers get through the airport much quicker.

Travellers should note however that it doesn’t replace the original passport, and will still need it to travel. 

With four simple questions about the trip and then four hours validity to get from the plane and out of the airport, it is an exciting change to travel.

Canadian citizens are also able to use this along with US citizens.

With its success at the current 20 international airports that accept it, it is sure to expand across the globe with its success.
