Today, a tale of two documentaries, the legend of the aged doctor-turned-rapper, some thoughts on the Oscar race, and an enlightening new interview with a comedy survivor.

Scott Tobias on the dueling Fyre Fest documentaries.

The massive boondoggle of the Fyre Festival, the 2017 promotional music festival/island getaway that turned into a Lord of the Flies for “influencers,” prompted plenty of fallout: a social media frenzy, charges for the fraudster in charge, and now, the oddest cinematic race-to-the-release-date since the great Lambada/Forbidden Dance Massacre of 1990. Netflix earmarked today for the release of their (very good) documentary Fyre, from American Movie director Chris Smith; on Monday, just as the review embargo for that one lifted, Hulu surprise-released Fyre Fraud, another documentary account of the disaster. And they are, unsurprisingly, going after each other a bit. Writing for The Ringer, Tobias talked to both filmmaking teams about their films and controversies:

Fyre and Fyre Fraud arrive at many of the same conclusions about what happened with the festival, and both documentaries place much of the blame on McFarland, a scam artist who was subsequently sentenced to six years in federal prison for wire fraud. However, the major difference between them is that the Hulu doc has an exclusive interview with McFarland and the Netflix doc does not. In the course of preparing a profile on Chris Smith (American Movie, Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond) for The Ringer, coming later this week, I asked Smith on Monday about the Hulu documentary that was released earlier in the day. What he said wound up sparking a kind of ethics-off between the two camps.

Dave Itzkoff interviews Conan O’Brien.

Next week, Conan returns to TBS — but it’s perhaps more accurate to just say Conan returns to TBS, since the show carrying his name will be a different beast than the one that stopped airing in October. It will run half as long, at 30 minutes; it will dispense with late-night talk-show conventions like a desk set and a house band. At the New York Times, Itzkoff talks to O’Brien about what caused those changes, where he sees his career going, and how he’s come to terms with his own limited shelf life:

Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think’s that what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

Jeff Maysh on “Dr. Rapp.”

Dr. Sherman Hershfield was your average, over-worked California doctor, until a series of strokes rendered his speech slurred and stuttered. Yet he discovered a strange new gift for speaking in rhyme — and found that when he did so, his new speech difficulties disappeared. So he devoted himself to learning how to rhyme well, which led him to an unlikely hang-out for a white Beverly Hills denizen: “Project Blowed,” the notoriously heated open-mic workshop at Leimert Park in South Central. And, as The Atlantic‘s Jeff Maysh tells it, he became a legend:

Back at Project Blowed, Hershfield intensified his efforts to dominate the mic. But his double life soon became strained as his two worlds splintered. “His friends in Beverly Hills did not approve of this at all,” said Kaplan, Hershfield’s journalist friend. “They were so shocked. Let’s just say none of his friends showed up at open-mic night.” By choosing rap nights instead of night shifts, Hershfield soon fell into another financial crisis. “I think he was more obsessed with rapping than he was going to work,” his stepson, Scott, told me. Sometimes, Michiko told me, the guys from Leimert Park would lend Hershfield money for the bus.

Soon Hershfield’s voice became hoarse from shouting rhymes over African drums and staying out all night. Then, during one particularly hot evening, everything went black. “Dr. Rapp had a seizure,” recalled Tasha Wiggins, who worked for kaos Network. “Other rappers caught him. Everybody stopped what they were doing, trying to nurture Dr. Rapp.” As Hershfield lay unconscious on the floor, the crowd started chanting his name.

Nate Jones on this year’s Oscar villains.

When Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody won the Best Picture prizes at the Golden Globes earlier this month, the online side-eyes and murmurs came to a roar; how were these two movies, out of all the movies of this extraordinary year, front-runners. At Vulture, Jones takes a look at how a musical biopic and a period race drama, the kind of movies that would’ve breezed through awards season not too long ago, became the year’s most controversial contenders:

I’ve also heard the complaints, less from voters than from pundits: Can we make any movies about white people these days? Does every Oscar movie have to be Moonlight? While I’m sympathetic to the point of view of the films’ defenders, I think these complaints miss the mark. The Favourite, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and The Wife all managed to have almost entirely white casts without any controversy. And while Roma and BlacKkKlansman certainly owe a bit of their Best Picture buzz to their contemporary resonance, the category’s current front-runner is A Star Is Born, a film that’s so old-fashioned it’s a remake of a movie from 1937. As long as a movie like Darkest Hour can still get nominated for Best Picture, I think old-school Oscar bait will be fine.

What the two disparate reactions to Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody are really about is a dispute over the utility of pop-culture comfort food. Everyone agrees that the two movies are beige depictions of the real-life history, that they sanitize their subjects in ways that make them more appealing, but less specific. The question is, amid the trauma of the Trump era, is this kind of comfort a necessary balm, or a harmful distraction? Older Oscar voters have suggested to me that this divide is generational, and while that may be true in a broad sense, I suspect it’s as much a difference of philosophy and outlook as it is demographics. (Think of the way Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have more in common with each other than either does with Hillary Clinton.) It’s tempting to talk about the Academy as if it’s a singular body with singular tastes, but as my colleague Mark Harris reminds me, it’s actually a fractious group of 6,000 people who disagree with each other as much as you would expect a group of thousands of people who work in the same general industry to.

Kavanagh, O’Brien fined over cobalt https://briefnews.eu/kavanagh-obrien-fined-over-cobalt/ https://briefnews.eu/kavanagh-obrien-fined-over-cobalt/#respond Tue, 27 Feb 2018 06:59:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kavanagh-obrien-fined-over-cobalt/ TRAINERS Mark Kavanagh and Danny O’Brien have been fined $ 4000 and $ 8000 respectively at the end of the long-running cobalt case.

Justice Garde of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal delivered his decision on penalty on Tuesday after the two were originally disqualified by racing authorities for the administration of cobalt to horses in their care.

VCAT overturned the bans and Racing Victoria took the case to the Court Of Appeal which agreed they should be penalised for presentation but that neither had knowledge of administration.

O’Brien, speaking on behalf of Kavanagh and himself, said litigation for the pair hadn’t finished as they were taking civil action against Flemington Equine for considerable damages.

O’Brien said they would also apply for maximum costs at VCAT against RV when they were awarded next month. “We were exonerated on March 17 last year so we’ve known we’ve been in the clear since then,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien said RV had cost itself a lot of money in the case. “We would have pleaded guilty to presentation straight up. Instead we spent 26 days in court clearing our name,” he said.

Netmarble enlists Conan O’Brien to market Lineage 2: Revolution https://briefnews.eu/netmarble-enlists-conan-obrien-to-market-lineage-2-revolution/ https://briefnews.eu/netmarble-enlists-conan-obrien-to-market-lineage-2-revolution/#respond Sat, 21 Oct 2017 06:25:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/netmarble-enlists-conan-obrien-to-market-lineage-2-revolution/

Netmarble Games is preparing to publish its blockbuster mobile game Lineage 2: Revolution in the West, and it has enlisted TV late-night comedian Conan O’Brien to help it raise awareness in the U.S. and Europe.

The O’Brien appearance is part of an aggressive marketing campaign as the company prepares to launch the free-to-play, massively multiplayer online action role-playing game in the U.S. and Europe on November 15, said Seungwon Lee, chief global officer of Netmarble Games, in an interview with GamesBeat. The stakes are high, as Lineage 2: Revolution scored an astounding $ 176 million in revenues in its first month in South Korea alone. More than 1 million people have signed up for the global version.

“We really hope this game will do well in the U.S. and Europe,” Lee said. “We are being much more aggressive with this launch than we have been before for any other game.”

Lineage 2: Revolution December 2016 in South Korea, and it expanded to 11 other countries in Asia in June. Tencent plans to publish the game in China. Netmarble is showing the multiplayer gameplay off this weekend at TwitchCon in Long Beach, California, where livestreamers and broadcasters are gathering for a convention.

O’Brien will appear at Netmarble’s TwitchCon booth this afternoon as part of a Twitch livestream.

At TwitchCon, streamers will take the Esports Stage for a 30 vs 30 Fortress Siege, a battle between two clans to conquer a fortress in Lineage 2: Revolution. Next year, Lineage 2: Revolution will add a 200-person Castle Siege mode, where 50 players defend a castle against 150 attackers. The mobile version of Lineage 2: Revolution is based on the popular PC online game Lineage 2.

Lee said Netmarble’s Los Angeles division and its newly acquired Kabam Games studio in Vancouver have worked for as long as a year now in localizing the game for the West. It will be available in English and numerous European languages on November 15.

Soledad O’Brien on the Power of Showing Up https://briefnews.eu/soledad-obrien-on-the-power-of-showing-up/ https://briefnews.eu/soledad-obrien-on-the-power-of-showing-up/#respond Thu, 28 Sep 2017 19:16:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/soledad-obrien-on-the-power-of-showing-up/ Soledad O’Brien worked for years to become one of America’s most recognizable broadcasters, at NBC and CNN. And then she made an abrupt career change.

In 2011, she created a production company, Starfish Media Group, that makes documentaries and TV shows. Having worked as a journalist, O’Brien knew plenty about media and storytelling, but she says that it was critical that she sought out guidance as she embarked on the new challenge of running a business.

For The Atlantic’s series, “On the Shoulders of Giants,” I talked to O’Brien about the kind of guidance she sought out for her new endeavor, as well as her work with the PowHERful Foundation, an organization she founded that mentors and financially supports young women seeking to earn a college degree. The conversation that follows has been edited for brevity and clarity.

B.R.J. O’Donnell: When you launched your own media-production company, did you look to others to help you in that transition?

Soledad O’Brien: It probably took me about a year before I realized that I could ask smarter questions about the help I needed. I was blown away by how willing people were to share their experiences. Everybody had a philosophy and a strategy that they had come to—and they were just so willing to share it. People would break it down and say, “Listen, this is what you should think about.” I was amazed at how willing everyone I asked was to show me how they structured their business by sketching it out on the back of a napkin. And now, when someone comes to me and says, “I’m an entrepreneur and trying to start something,” I sit them down and ask, “How can I be helpful to you?”

O’Donnell: What was the most counterintuitive advice that you got when you were in the middle of that process?

O’Brien: As a journalist, you’re very comfortable thinking on the level of a single story. But instead of just thinking as a journalist, people would ask me to think about the overall structure of what I was doing. If you are building a media-production company, it can’t be that you are just running out on assignments—it’s not an assignment desk. So you have to think at the 35,000-foot level: What are you trying to build?

O’Donnell: How have your perceptions of mentorship changed over time?

O’Brien: I think good mentorship is about consistency. It’s like going to the gym. It’s not about asking, “Did you work out for 45 minutes today?” It’s about asking, “Over time, did you just consistently go, and go, and go some more?” For me, that’s how mentoring is. You develop a relationship with someone, and eventually you look up and you say, “Wow, we’ve known each other for five years.” That’s how you get a great mentor.

O’Donnell: Why did you decide that PowHERful would include a mentorship component in addition to financial aid?

O’Brien: When people are struggling, it can be death by a thousand paper cuts. It’s not that they don’t want to go to class—it’s that they can’t afford the $ 125 to fix their car to get them there, and so then they start missing class. It’s this spiral of things that go wrong. And it’s often because they just don’t have the padding to make it through. I remember when I was first starting out, if I had to pay a babysitter extra to stay later, I could, because I had a good job. But if you don’t, you’re stuck. For a lot of our young women at PowHERful, they were stuck. I realized that, first, we needed to help people financially, but second, we also needed to give them mentors that would help them grow and succeed.

O’Donnell: You recently put out a documentary with Ice-T about the killings of the rappers Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. Was that project shaped by any advice you’ve gotten from mentors in the past?

O’Brien: This project was very different for me. I had mentors who told me, “Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing—what are you interested in doing?” They told me, “Do the projects that you are interested in and then do them well.” When I started a production company, it wasn’t just about doing news, but figuring out what stuff you want to accomplish before you die. Making “Who Shot Biggie and Tupac?” is one of those projects for me.

‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ Trailer: Dylan O’Brien Goes to War with WCKD https://briefnews.eu/maze-runner-the-death-cure-trailer-dylan-obrien-goes-to-war-with-wckd/ https://briefnews.eu/maze-runner-the-death-cure-trailer-dylan-obrien-goes-to-war-with-wckd/#respond Mon, 25 Sep 2017 01:17:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/maze-runner-the-death-cure-trailer-dylan-obrien-goes-to-war-with-wckd/ Maze Runner The Death Cure Trailer

Fans have been patiently waiting to see the concluding chapter of the Maze Runner trilogy after Dylan O’Brien was injured during a stunt gone wrong while the film was shooting in 2016. Originally set for release earlier this year, Maze Runner: The Death Cure is now coming to theaters in February of 2018, and the first trailer has just been unleashed.

At the end of Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) was preparing to take the fight to WCKD to rescue Minho, kill Dr. Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson), and bring the rebel group The Right Arm and the rest of his fellow Gladers with him. The first Maze Runner The Death Cure trailer, which debuted during the finale of Teen Wolf on MTV, shows us that Thomas isn’t screwing around anymore.

It’s a quick teaser that fills some time by showing us some key moments from the first two installments of the Maze Runner franchise before getting into the action of the third. However, the glimpses of the sequel shown in the teaser don’t give us much to sink our teeth into. Clearly Thomas is on a mission to rescue his friends and defy WCKD’s misguided agenda, but otherwise, we’re just given hints of confrontations and large scale action sequences (including possibly the one that injured Dylan O’Brien during the initial production).

We’ve got plenty of time to see more footage from the concluding chapter of this young adult franchise since it doesn’t arrive until early next year, but if you want to see more from Maze Runner: The Death Cure, check out this featurette right here.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure is directed by franchise helmer Wes Ball and also features Kaya Scodelario, Ki Hong, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Giancarlo Esposito, Aidan Gillen, Barry Pepper, and it sounds like Will Poulter will be coming back for the concluding chapter of this trilogy as well.

Here’s the official synopsis of the novel for those curious:

In the epic finale to the Maze Runner saga, Thomas leads his group of escaped Gladers on their final and most dangerous mission yet. To save their friends, they must break into the legendary Last City, a WCKD-controlled labyrinth that may turn out to be the deadliest maze of all. Anyone who makes it out alive will get answers to the questions the Gladers have been asking since they first arrived in the maze.

The final chapter of the trilogy hits theaters on February 9, 2018.

‘American Assassin’ Red Band Trailer: Michael Keaton Trains Dylan O’Brien to Make a Killing https://briefnews.eu/american-assassin-red-band-trailer-michael-keaton-trains-dylan-obrien-to-make-a-killing/ https://briefnews.eu/american-assassin-red-band-trailer-michael-keaton-trains-dylan-obrien-to-make-a-killing/#respond Thu, 17 Aug 2017 22:08:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/american-assassin-red-band-trailer-michael-keaton-trains-dylan-obrien-to-make-a-killing/ american assassin red band trailer

The trailers for American Assassin are a tad generic, but the filmmaker behind the thriller doesn’t make generic movies. Michael Cuesta knows how to craft a drama with some real firepower. The director of 12 and Holding and Kill the Messenger has never made a thriller quite like his adaptation of Vince Flynn‘s novel, which stars Dylan O’Brien and Michael Keaton. The trailers paint a movie you’d probably watching during daytime TNT (which I intend as a compliment), but since Cuesta directed the film, I suspect there’s more to American Assassin than the trailers suggest.

Below, watch the American Assassin red band trailer.

Here’s the American Assassin red band trailer, which starts off fairly serious and contained but then goes surprisingly big and ridiculous towards the end.

Director Edward Zwick (Glory) was once attached to direct this thriller, but he lef the director’s chair ( he’s still credited as a co-writer). A lot of talent came and left the project before it finally got made. Antoine Fuqua (The Equalizer) was once going to direct American Assassin, and Chris Hemsworth and Colin Farrell were attached to star in it not too long ago.

Dylan O’Brien ultimately landed the role of Mitch Rapp, the lead character in 16 novels written by Flynn. American Assassin is a prequel novel, showing how Rapp went from an athlete studying Arab linguistics to working as a black ops agent for the CIA. He’s trained and instructed by the best of the best of the best, Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton).

It’s not an overly fatherly role based on the trailer. The trailer shows Keaton involved in some of the action, so he won’t just be sitting behind a desk calling shots – which is a generally boring role and I’m sure he’d make sitting behind a desk look really cool. Still, you want to see an actor like Keaton unleashed in a thriller, and not be confined to an office barking orders. After watching the American Assassin trailer, it looks like he has the juiciest role in the film, or maybe it just looks that way because he’s Michael Keaton.

Another actor who makes me curious about American Assassin is Taylor Kitsch, who tends to thrive in substantial supporting roles. Friday Night Lights, Lone Survivor, The Normal Heart, and True Detective show off his talent and range, which wasn’t utilized well in some big-budget flops like Battleship and John Carter. Those are his most famous movies, but they don’t highlight most of his talents. Neither movie gave him a lot of support. I think we’re going to see him do even more great work in movies, especially when he’s given roles meatier than John Carter and Lieutenant Alex Hopper.

AMERICAN ASSASSIN follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien), a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War.

American Assassin opens in theaters September 15, 2017.

A Mexican viewer posted a thank-you letter to Conan O’Brien for his special episode of his TBS late-night show “Conan,” which was shot in Mexico City. And now the letter is going viral.

TBS aired the episode, “Conan: Made in Mexico,” on Wednesday. It was shot by a Mexican production crew.

“I’m watching the special you made in Mexico and I just wanted to say thank you so much,” Reddit user “FrankOcean2” wrote on the site. “Thank you for showing us as we really are. Not what some people say in political rallies, not what the narrative of some part of the US political discourse tells a part of the American electorate… So many Mexicans like myself, that is a child of the internet, that grew up with Mr. Rogers and ‘Thundercats,’ are embracing the notion of how similar we are.”

The letter ended with, “So, thank you Conan. As a Mexican I felt so represented today, you raised the voices of millions of us who when we view the U.S.A we view them as a friend, not as an enemy. And for that, Thank you so much.”

In addition to featuring sketches of O’Brien crossing the border, asking Mexican citizens for donations to pay for President Donald Trump’s planned border wall, among other things, he also interviewed former Mexican President Vicente Fox and “Rogue One” actor Diego Luna.

Although there were a lot of laughs and digs at Trump’s Mexican wall and immigration initiatives, O’Brien emphasized the show’s message of respect between the people of both countries.

“I’ve talked to many, many Mexicans since I arrived,” O’Brien said. “And this is the biggest feeling that I get from them — they feel misunderstood and their feelings are hurt. They’ve heard these things that were said at campaign rallies… and I’ve spent a lot of time trying to explain to them that many people in the United States love the Mexican people. This is a misrepresentation of how people feel.”
