The mysterious Kuiper Belt object 2014 MU69 now exists as more than a generic-looking blob. NASA has posted its sharpest-ever images of the object, captured a relatively close 4,109 miles away at 12:33AM on January 1st. While scientists already knew some details about MU69 before now, such as its unusual two-part ‘pancake’ shape, these higher-quality images show details that just weren’t visible before. You’ll find circular pieces of terrain, deep pits (visible toward the top) and other details that were previously elusive.

The space agency is keen to brag about the feat. New Horizons got closer to MU69 than it did its main target, Pluto, thanks to “unprecedented precision” in calculations across multiple countries. There was a real chance the camera would miss the object entirely, according to mission team Principal Investigator Alan Stern.

You’re not going to get better pictures than this, unfortunately. However, they’re good enough that they could provide further insights around the object’s formation and the kind of interactions it has roughly 4.1 billion miles from Earth. They’re brief snapshots, but they could provide years of insights.

Last night at Adobe Max’s Sneaks session, a showcase unveiling potential software features, comedian Tiffany Haddish and Adobe evangelist Paul Trani announced ten new tools that the company is exploring. The sneaks run the gamut from fun voice-to-music features to impressively useful tools like Smooth Operator, an intelligent vertical video cropping tool.

Sneaks could end up as part of an application within the Adobe Creative Cloud, or they could stand alone — or Adobe may not choose to move forward with them at all. There are some pretty interesting applications in this year’s sneaks, however, and some of could have very cool implications for photo and video editors.

So, about that voice-to-music tool, it’s called Project Kazoo, and it turns your voice into an instrument. The practical application is that you can sing to your computer and easily create your own soundtracks with just your voice — and a very helpful assist from Adobe’s AI-enable Sensei technology.

Another highlight is Project Fast Mask, which should delight video editors for sure. Fast Mask allows you to select an entire object (a person, for example) with just a few clicks. The feature then works across multiple frames of the video, meaning you select the object once and can edit the rest of the video around it. Project Fast Mask also uses Adobe Sensei to reduce a very time-consuming process to just a few clicks.

Got complex vector graphics you want to edit? Project Good Bones may be just the ticket for you. After selecting a full graphic, Project Good Bones creates a skeleton and “handles” for the graphic which you can manipulate however you want. Similar to Project Fast Mask, Good Bones takes a once arduous process and replaces it with to a simple, easy-to-use function. It’s pretty powerful, time-saving technology that could be a real benefit for designers and artists down the line.

Russian subsidiaries of banking majors, including Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Raiffeisen, JPMorgan, Deutsche Bank and HSBC Holdings, have voiced their objections to plans that would limit the Russian units to depositing just 20 percent of their capital abroad at their parent companies. Under the current regulations, there is no limit for banking operations of this kind.

The Central Bank of Russia proposed the rationing measures in response to fresh anti-Russia sanctions from the US and Europe that could allow foreign lenders to block access to the funds for its units based in Russia, two sources close to the issue told Bloomberg. The targeted lenders say they will have to reduce their loan services in Russia, according to unnamed people quoted by the agency.

If the new rules enter force, most of the local units run by foreign banks will inevitably be in violation of the mandated capital ratios. Some of the lenders, including Nordea Bank and Commerzbank, say the measure will create “unequal” conditions for local banks and foreign-owned subsidiaries.

Ahead of the US mid-term elections in November, the US Congress is actively discussing potential punitive measures against Russia over its alleged meddling in US elections. Among the penalties is a ban on using US dollars for some of Russia’s biggest banks. In August, local banking bonds brought investors a loss of 5.1 percent in dollar terms, the worst of any sector domestically, according to a Bloomberg Barclays index.

According to the Central Bank of Russia, the final version of the rule is still being discussed. The regulator didn’t elaborate on the goal of the restrictions or on the fate of the proposal.

A viral video has captured a motorcyclist experiencing very bad luck when driving on a busy road.

Multiple cars can be seen driving on the narrow roads, surrounded by trees.

Filmed from a dashboard camera, they are all driving at speed when suddenly a tyre comes off a car up ahead.

It flies through the middle of the road, narrowly missing a number of vehicles.

What happens next has to be seen to be believed.

A car on the right side of the road is hit by the tyre despite swerving out of the way.

The tyre then bounces off the side of the speeding car and flies into the other side of the road.

And then the tyre hits a motorcycle square on, pushing the bike out from underneath him and knocking him to the ground.

The car pulls over and stops as the man drops and rolls.

Thankfully he doesn’t appear hurt thanks to his leather gear.

The Imgur user has since had over 162,000 views, with many praising the man on the motorbike rider for wearing the correct outfit.

One wrote: “With the right gear it’s better to skid than roll.

“Rolling can break your bones with enough speed, skidding won’t hurt you. at all.”

Another realised the bad luck the poor driver experienced.

They remarked: “The odds of that happening are astronomical.”

Another motorcyclist suffered at the hands of another driver on the road.

They can be seen waiting at the traffic lights when a red car reverses backwards.

The bike rider quickly realises what happens and jumps off at the last minute.

The car continues to reverse back despite this and crushes the bike.

Whilst they don’t appear hurt, the motorcyclist raises their hands in annoyance.

One woman’s inanimate object is another’s one true love. At least that’s the case for the growing number of objectum sexuals, i.e. people who fall in love with and often marry what most deem to be an insignificant other.

Liberty bought the 90-year-old light fixture, which she named ‘Lumiere,’ for £400 (€565) after stumbling upon it on eBay – a moment she describes as, “love at first sight.”

A rollercoaster of emotion

Linda Ducharme married her ‘husband,’ Bruce, in 2013 after a 30-year relationship full of ups and downs, literally. Bruce is a Ferris Wheel. Linda fell in love with Bruce at a carnival in 1982. The pair suffered a rough patch in 1986 when a storm knocked him down and put him out of commission, but Linda is now attempting to return him to his former glory and the couple live happily together in Florida.

Pirate ghost

While not necessarily an object, it’s an unconventional marriage all the same. Last year Irishwoman Amanda Teague married a 300-year-old Haitian ghost pirate named Jack Teague who died by execution in the 18th century.

Amanda and Jack married in international waters and she describes their physical relationship as being similar to that of a human couple.

Modern-day fairy tale

Los Angeles-based Aaron Chervenak eloped to Las Vegas to marry his smartphone after developing a deep and emotional relationship with the device.

“If we’re gonna be honest with ourselves, we connect with our phones on so many emotional levels. We look to it for solace, to calm us down, to put us to sleep, to ease our minds, and to me, that’s also what a relationship is about. In a sense, my smartphone has been my longest relationship,” he explained.

The deceiving laptop lover

Not all love stories have happy endings. Case in point Chris Sevier, who was denied the right to marry his laptop by a federal judge in Utah on Monday. US District Court Judge David Nuffer rejected Sevier’s plea as it appeared he was not actually in love with the computer, but was, in fact, attempting to make a mockery of same-sex marriage.

Sevier had argued that marrying someone of the same sex is comparable to marrying his laptop, and has filed similar lawsuits in several other states, in an apparent attempt to overturn the US Supreme Court’s Obergefell v. Hodges ruling that made same-sex marriage legal nationwide.

Google Maps is one of the most useful tools available on the internet, allowing people to visit all areas of the world from the comfort of their own home. 

But as well as its informative qualities, the site also provides countless entertaining images. 

Alongside the ordinary looking residential streets and national parks is everything from the amusing to the downright bizarre. 

One particular image shows an isolated iceberg off the coast of Antarctica. 

At the coordinate 72°43’13.53″S 78°40’21.56″W is a block of ice around 500 metres long. 

Apart from its placing, the iceberg looks nothing out of the ordinary. 

But according to UFO hunters the object is an underwater alien lair. 

The website, UFO Sightings Hotspot, believes it doesn’t fit the normal iceberg description. 

The site reads: “Icebergs can be classified on the basis of their shape.

“The two basic types of iceberg forms are tabular and non-tabular. 

“The shapes and forms from this iceberg look very different if we compare it with all the different shapes and forms of tabular and non-tabular icebergs.

“I’m not an iceberg expert but this object is really peculiar and looks like a vessel disguised as an iceberg.

“It looks out of place.”

But UFO sceptic Scott Brando has said: “I don’t see any mystery, it just looks like ice.” 

This isn’t the only alien or UFO related sighting that’s been spotted on Google Maps. 

A satellite image posted on Google Earth shows a circular piece of land in Argentina, which conspiracy theorists believe is a hiding place for a UFO.

Sketchfab is taking one of its biggest steps yet today and launching features so that users can buy and sell 3D objects.

The startup is supporting the industry standard glTF as its download format, which should make it easy for creators to take the objects purchased from the siteand import them into creativity software.

Google recently launched Poly, which offers similar functionality, but that service is more focused on objects with a limited amount of detail. In addition, Poly launched with only free functionality — so there are no built in tools for creators to use if they want to make money from their creations.

Sketchfab CEO Alban Denoyel said there are 2 million models hosted on Sketchfab and though only around 4,000 are available for purchase on Day One, he’s confident the repository is large enough that people should be able to find what they are looking for. Available content ranges from low polygon objects like those found on Google’s service up to animated objects and highly detailed 3D scans. The service includes an inspector to check out the details of a file including the materials and textures used.

There are other services as well like Unity’s Asset Store that resemble what Sketchfab is doing. Many 3D and VR content creators, however, rely on Sketchfab’s cross-device support to ensure people looking at their work can access it no matter what device they’re using. The addition of a store to that core functionality could be a big plus for artists struggling to find a way to support themselves by creating cool things in VR.

Pope Francis was struck by what appears to have been an item of clothing or a towel as he greeted crowds from the popemobile on his way to an open-air Mass in Chile’s capital, Santiago, on Wednesday.

The 81-year old was hit on the left side of his face, footage from Santiago’s O’Higgins Park shows. The pontiff appeared to be unharmed, however, and maintained a smile as he waved to worshipers as though nothing had happened.
