At 91, the legendary actor recently told Disney he was “looking into winding down this particular character.” That forced the company to ask itself how do you even replace Jones? The answer Disney eventually settled on, with the actor’s consent, involved an AI program.

If you’ve seen any of the recent Star Wars shows, you’ve heard the work of Respeecher. It’s a Ukrainian startup that uses archival recordings and a “proprietary AI algorithm” to create new dialogue featuring the voices of “performers from long ago.” In the case of Jones, the company worked with Lucasfilm to recreate his voice as it had sounded when film audiences first heard Darth Vader in 1977.

According to Vanity Fair, Jones had signed off on Disney using recordings of his voice and Respeecher’s software to “keep Vader alive.” Lucasfilm veteran Matthew Wood told the outlet that James guided the Sith Lord’s performance in Obi-Wan Kenobi, acting as “a benevolent godfather,” but it was ultimately the AI that gave Vader his voice in many of the scenes.

While there’s something to be said about preserving Vader’s voice, Disney’s decision to use an AI to do so is likely to add fuel to disagreements over how such technology should be used in creative fields. For instance, Getty Images recently banned AI-generated art over copyright concerns. With Jones, there's the possibility we could hear him voice Vader long after he passes away.

Star Wars filmmaker Kathleen Kennedy and franchise vet Ewan McGregor took the stage at the close of the D23 Expo on Friday evening to announce/confirm that the Scottish actor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a live-action series for Disney+.

In fact, Kennedy touted that all of the scripts are already written, with production scheduled to start in 2020.

The as-yet-untitled Obi-Wan series, from Lucasfilm, marks the second live-action Star Wars project for the new streaming service. Already set to debut with Disney+ on Tuesday, Nov. 12 is The Mandalorian, which stars Pedro Pascal in the title role and boasts a supporting cast that includes Nick Nolte, Giancarlo Esposito, Ming-Na Wen, Carl Weathers,Gina  Carano and Werner Herzog.

In Star Wars canon, The Mandalorian is set “after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order,” which would place it somewhere between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

If you just felt a great disturbance in the Force, you’re not mistaken: Ewan McGregor has signed on to play Star Wars icon Obi-Wan Kenobi once again in a new series for Disney+, according to our sister site Deadline.

The series — slated to hit Disney’s upcoming streaming service, which launches in November — is still untitled, and details are scarce at this point. But McGregor is reportedly set to reprise the role of the wise Jedi master he played in the three Star Wars big-screen prequels: 1999’s The Phantom Menace, 2002’s Attack of the Clones and 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. (McGregor, of course, took over the role from Sir Alec Guinness, who first played Obi-Wan in the original 1977 Star Wars film.)

McGregor’s Obi-Wan series joins a pair of Star Wars live-action TV shows already set to debut on Disney+: The Mandalorian, from executive producer Jon Favreau and starring Game of Thrones and Narcos veteran Pedro Pascal; and a Rogue One prequel, with Diego Luna returning to star as rebel leader Cassian Andor.

Best known for his film work like Trainspotting and Moulin Rouge, McGregor recently hit the small screen to star in Season 3 of FX’s Fargo as brothers Ray and Emmit Stussy. He earned an Emmy nomination for the dual role, and took home the Golden Globe for best actor in a limited series or TV movie.

Ahead of his appearance in the movie Christopher Robin, Ewan McGregor appeared on the American TV panel show The View.

McGregor was part of the Star Wars franchise prequels, movies which were panned by audiences and critics alike.

He played a young Obi-Wan Kenobi (to Alec Guinness older iteration in the original trilogy).

When asked about his role in a future Obi-Wan centred solo story, McGregor was coy but positive.

He replied: “I would totally do it, of course,” but added, “there’s no plans as such to do it, as far as I know.”

McGregor continued: “I’ve been asked this question for years and years. I’d be happy to do it.

“There must be a good story to tell as they’re doing spin-offs – there’s likely to be a good Obi-Wan between me and Alec Guinness.

“I’ve answered ‘yes’ so many times it looks like I’m touting for work!”

The rumours around an Obi-Wan Kenobi solo movie have been swirling for what feels like aeons.

But the likelihood of one coming to fruition seemed dashed by the relative disappointment of the Solo: A Star Wars Story spinoff.

The box office flop was said to have put any plans for future spinoffs on hold.

But then, a glimmer of hope arrived in the form of an article in The Belfast Telegraph.

The Belfast paper wrote: “The latest spinoff in the Star Wars franchise coming here in April 2019.”

STAR WARS EPISODE 9: IS STAR WARS EPISODE 9 THE LAST ONE?

George Lucas was also reported to be in Northern Ireland in the months before Christmas to secure the filming location deal.

These facts seem to indicate a Star Wars spin-off is on the table, and if there’s going to be one, fans can only hope it’s Obi-Wan and not Boba Fett.

For now, Lucasfilm shifted its attention to the contemporary trilogy with the recent release of the Episode IX cast list.

Most excitingly are the returns of Mark Hamill, the appearance of Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, and the use of unused footage to allow Carrie Fisher to reprise her role as Leia after her far-too-soon death.

Star Wars Episode IX is in cinemas Thursday, December 19, 2019.

Star Wars fans across the globe are suddenly very excited about a report in a local Belfast newspaper.

As the fan backlash and boycott drama continues to rumble on there had been fears that the planned spin-off Anthology movies had been put on hold or even dropped.

Solo: A Story has been a tremendous flop for the once-infallible franchise, with Last Jedi fan unhappiness a contributing factor. Not only that, but there were serious concerns that existing fans and general cinema-goers were not interested in seeing back stories of established characters.

Does anyone still want Obi-Wan?

The Belfast Gazette reported the booming array of international film and TV projects filming in the city.

It said: “The news is another huge boost to our growing TV and film industry, with Superman prequel series Krypton also being filmed locally and the latest spin-off in the Star Wars franchise coming here in April 2019.

“ creator George Lucas visited Northern Ireland before Christmas to seal the deal for the new standalone film.”

But fans need to rein in their joy, there are still some major potential problems with the story.

The report added: “The movie will centre on the life of Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi, with Ewan McGregor reprising the role he first played in 1999’s Star Wars prequel The Phantom Menace.”

Firstly, Lucas may have sealed a deal before Christmas, but that was before The Last Jedi backlash and Solo shock. Plans can change.

Secondly, McGregor has still not been confirmed in the role, with other reports suggesting he has subsequently accepted other roles while the project was in doubt.

Fans may also be less impressed at the considerable reports coming from Hollywood which assert that all the future Anthology and Star Wars Story movies will be released onto the upcoming Disney streaming channel, rather than in cinemas.

Is this a sign of diminished confidence in the box office potential of the Obi-Wan and rumoured Boba Fett projects? Will their budegts acordingl beslshed?

Solo is projected to make a dramatically large and unprecented loss for Disney and Lucasfilm. Even if the Obi-Wan movie goes ahead, will it be on the scale Star wars fans have come to expect?

Forget Kylo Ren and the First Order, a galaxy much closer to home has been having some serious problems recently.

After the Han Solo movie performed shockingly badly there were claims that it was partly due to a boycott by fans furious about The Last Jedi. Numerous reports and rumours foloowed that Disney and Lucasfilm were being forced to reconsider various upcoming projects.

First there was a report in Deadline that the future Anthology Star Wars Story movies including Obi-wan and Boba Fett projects had been put on indefinite hold.

Then a more drastic rumour surfaced that Last Jedi director Rian Johnson could lose his spin-off trilogy.

A major article by US broadcaster ABC revealed an aofficial statement by Disney on the subject.

It said: “Lucasfilm sources on Thursday characterized as “inaccurate” a report that future Star Wars movies falling outside of the regular trilogy storyline (Episodes I to IX) have been put on hold in the wake of the box office under-performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story.

“Instead, Lucasfilm told ABC News there are still “multiple” Star Wars films currently in development that have not been officially announced.”

“Those projects are moving forward separate from an already-announced Star Wars trilogy being overseen by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and another series of movies from Game of Thrones producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.”

It is worth noting that ABC is also owned by Lucasfilm parent company Disney.

While the statement sets the facts straight, it is also a clear indication that Disney has felt the need to address the swirling rumors which can only harm the integrity and strength of the entire Star Wars franchise moving forward.

Is Disney worried?

Solo: A Star Wars Story has taken $ 353million worldwide since its release. The previous Anthology movie, Rogiue One, took just over a billion.

Solo is also reported to be the most expensive Star wars movie ever, after the considerable reshoots ordered when the original directors were fired. At the current time, it is expected to be the first Star Wars movie to lose money, a concept that was previously unthinkable.

The Last Jedi cracked $ 1.3billion, far down on The Force Awakens $ 2billion.

The film news and reviews site Collider posted an exclusive report on Wednesday concerning the fate of future Star Wars films—and in particular, a long-rumored, not-yet-announced film focused on the classic character Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Citing “sources with knowledge of the situation,” Collider confirmed that all pre-production for Lucasfilm’s unnamed Obi-Wan “Star Wars Story” film is now “on hold.” Every contributor attached to that film’s pre-production process is “no longer involved,” the site adds, and any other Star Wars Story film projects are currently “on hiatus.” That includes a rumored Boba Fett film, which Collider reports was not as far along in a pre-production process as the Obi-Wan film was.

Other major film-gossip outlets—including Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, and Deadline—have not published similar news as of press time.

The Expanse has to be enjoyed for its broader political undertones along with the Sci fi and action. I hope you and your team give it a try. And I’m bummed they cancelled it.
