Bill O’Reilly has more to say about why Fox News let him go.

The former O’Reilly Factor host, who was ousted from the network in April after a series of sexual harassment allegations were filed against him, spoke with Matt Lauer on Tuesday’s Today about the firing, calling the Fox News dismissal a “business decision.”

“They had a contractual clause that they could pay me a certain amount of money and not put me on air. And they exercised that clause,” O’Reilly told Lauer. “There are billions of dollars at stake, and they made a business decision that they could possibly prosper more without me. It was as simple as that.”

O’Reilly stood by his original post-firing statement that he did “absolutely nothing wrong” at the network, adding that “not in 42 years… did I have any interaction with HR or any complaints filed against [me].”

Upon being asked if he’s done some soul-searching in the five months since his firing, O’Reilly put the focus instead on one of the women who accused him of harassment, who was also arrested in 2015 for filing a false police report.

“It goes to credibility, doesn’t it?” he said. “This was a hit job. A political and financial hit job.”

Before the Q&A turned to O’Reilly’s new book Killing England, Lauer asked the onetime host if there were any “self-inflicted wounds” that led to his departure from Fox News.

“Nobody’s a perfect person,” O’Reilly said, “but I can go to sleep at night very well, knowing that I never mistreated anyone on my watch in 42 years.”

Bill O’Reilly has more to say about his recent ousting from Fox News.

The embattled TV host — who, last Wednesday, was fired from the cable news network after a series of sexual harassment allegations against him — spoke about his dismissal in a podcast posted to his official website.

“I am sad that I’m not on television anymore,” O’Reilly told listeners. “I was very surprised how it all turned out. I can’t say a lot, because there’s much stuff going on right now.”

He continued: “But I can tell you that I’m very confident the truth will come out, and when it does, I don’t know if you’re going to be surprised — but I think you’re going to be shaken, as I am…. I can’t say anymore because I just don’t want to influence the flow of the information. I don’t want the media to take what I say and misconstrue it. However you, as a loyal O’Reilly listener, have a right to know, down the lane, what exactly happened. And we are working in that direction.”

O’Reilly’s firing came after weeks of scandal, beginning with the revelation that Fox had paid out more than $ 13 million to settle five separate sexual-harassment lawsuits against him. The host was officially let go after more accusers came forward, and dozens of companies dropped their ads from The O’Reilly Factor.

According to reports, O’Reilly stands to collect as much as $ 25 million in a severance payout.

In his initial statement, O’Reilly said his dismissal was “tremendously disheartening” and “due to completely unfounded claims.”

'Stephen Colbert' Reacts to Bill O'Reilly Firing: 'Stay Strong, Papa Bear' https://briefnews.eu/stephen-colbert-reacts-to-bill-oreilly-firing-stay-strong-papa-bear/ https://briefnews.eu/stephen-colbert-reacts-to-bill-oreilly-firing-stay-strong-papa-bear/#respond Thu, 20 Apr 2017 05:15:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stephen-colbert-reacts-to-bill-oreilly-firing-stay-strong-papa-bear/

When the news of Bill O’Reilly‘s firing broke, there was only one pundit we wanted to hear from: Stephen Colbert. (No, not that one.)

The Late Show host resurrected his Colbert Report alter ego — one that heavily borrowed from O’Reilly’s combative broadcasting style — on Wednesday’s show, with “conservative pundit Stephen Colbert” appearing via satellite to eulogize the ousted Fox News host — or, as Colbert affectionately calls him, “Papa Bear.”

To set things up, Colbert explained that he spent nine years playing a version of O’Reilly, “and then twelve months in therapy to de-bloviate myself.” He then went live to “Bill O’Reilly’s biggest fan” — aka his Colbert Report persona — who quickly launched into a tirade against the PC culture that toppled O’Reilly: “Suddenly, sexual harassment is a crime?”

But he invited O’Reilly to come live with him in the remote cabin in the woods he shares with Jon Stewart: “We’ve got an animal sanctuary. Jon and I milk the goats… and soon, I hope, we’ll be milking you.” Colbert got faux-choked up, imploring O’Reilly to “stay strong, Papa Bear” before crying out: “Oh God, is this really happening?”

Bill O'Reilly Officially Out at Fox News https://briefnews.eu/bill-oreilly-officially-out-at-fox-news/ https://briefnews.eu/bill-oreilly-officially-out-at-fox-news/#respond Wed, 19 Apr 2017 19:18:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bill-oreilly-officially-out-at-fox-news/ There’s no good way to spin this: Fox News is parting ways with Bill O’Reilly.

The controversial political commentator is out after more than two decades with the network, 21st Century Fox confirmed via the following statement: “After a thorough and careful review of the allegations, the Company and Bill O’Reilly have agreed that Bill O’Reilly will not be returning to the Fox News Channel.”

The O’Reilly Factor host has been mired in scandal for weeks, with the recent revelation that Fox has paid out more than $ 13 million to settle five separate sexual-harassment lawsuits against him. That led to more accusers coming forward and an extensive advertiser boycott, with dozens of companies dropping their ads from Factor, costing the network millions in lost revenue.

Tucker Carlson, who currently anchors the 9 pm slot, has reportedly been tapped to replace O’Reilly at 8 pm.

O’Reilly has hosted the primetime news show The O’Reilly Factor since 1996, and made it into Fox News’ top-rated program, with viewers tuning in each weeknight for O’Reilly’s commentary on the day’s political news. His brash, no-nonsense style (he famously labeled his show “the No-Spin Zone”) and “Talking Points Memo” format, with on-screen text matching his comments, were lampooned by Stephen Colbert on his Emmy-winning Comedy Central show The Colbert Report.

No word yet on whether O’Reilly might take his act to another TV network, but he does have a writing career to fall back on: He’s written or co-written more than a dozen books, including the bestsellers Killing Lincoln and Killing Kennedy, both of which were recently turned into National Geographic TV movies.

O'Reilly Out At Fox https://briefnews.eu/oreilly-out-at-fox/ https://briefnews.eu/oreilly-out-at-fox/#respond Wed, 19 Apr 2017 18:51:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/oreilly-out-at-fox/

Bill O’Reilly is out at Fox News amid several sexual harassment allegations against him, the company said in a statement.

He was scheduled to return from a vacation on Monday, but that will no longer happen.

“After a thorough and careful review of the allegations, the Company and Bill O’Reilly have agreed that Bill O’Reilly will not be returning to the Fox News Channel,” the statement said.

Attorney Lisa Bloom, who represents Wendy Walsh, who has accused O’Reilly of becoming hostile after she didn’t return to his hotel room with him, said in a statement: “This is what happens when women speak our truth: we can slay dragons. I am very proud to have stood with my brave clients who stood up for themselves and all the silenced women.

“Fox News should have fired him in 2004 when Andrea Mackris spoke out, but at least they did it now. They did it because we persisted.”

Several reporters tweeted an internal email from Fox owner Rupert Murdoch and his sons, Lachlan and James, saying, “This decision follows an extensive review done in collaboration with outside counsel.”

“By ratings standards, Bill O’Reilly is one of the most accomplished TV personalities in the history of cable news. In fact, his success by any measure is indisputable,” the email read, adding, “We have full confidence that the network will continue to be a powerhouse in cable news.”

NPR is reporting that Tucker Carlson will taken his 8pm ET slot. New York Magazine is reporting The Five will move to 9pm.

Media Matters President Angelo Carusone, who also ran the @StopOReilly Twitter account that pressured advertisers to abandon the show, said: “Fox News was forced to act. They had years to address serial sexual harassment at Fox News. They didn’t; they actually enabled it. So, individuals and groups took action to educate advertisers.

“Without advertisers, Bill O’Reilly’s show was no longer commercially viable,” the statement added.

Bill O’Reilly is stepping out of the spotlight for a moment.

Addressing viewers of The O’Reilly Factor on Tuesday, the Fox News staple announced that he’ll be MIA from his nightly talker for an unspecified period of time while he treats himself to a little vacation:

–
“Last fall, I booked a trip that should be terrific, [but] I’m not going to tell you where it is,” O’Reilly said, adding that viewers can visit to his website to submit their guesses as to where he’s going. (My guess? This social media experiment won’t end well.)

As you might expect, many are questioning the timing of O’Reilly’s vacation. Amid recent reports that he and Fox News paid $ 13 million in sexual harassment settlements, advertisers have been pulling out of The O’Reilly Factor in droves.

Louis C.K. Hosts SNL: Alec Baldwin Plays Trump and O'Reilly, Pepsi Ad Mockery and More Highlights https://briefnews.eu/louis-c-k-hosts-snl-alec-baldwin-plays-trump-and-oreilly-pepsi-ad-mockery-and-more-highlights/ https://briefnews.eu/louis-c-k-hosts-snl-alec-baldwin-plays-trump-and-oreilly-pepsi-ad-mockery-and-more-highlights/#respond Sun, 09 Apr 2017 06:39:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/louis-c-k-hosts-snl-alec-baldwin-plays-trump-and-oreilly-pepsi-ad-mockery-and-more-highlights/

You might have expected Louis C.K. to begin this weekend’s Saturday Night Live with commentary on the Trump administration. Instead, he delved into a monologue about a racist chicken, and it was delightful.

“Here’s a joke: Why did the chicken cross the road?” the Louie star asked the audience. “Because there was a black guy walking behind him. He was new to the city, this chicken, and he was like, ‘I feel like he’s following me, but I’m not sure’… So he crossed the road and the black guy went home… and the chicken thought, ‘Oh, I’m such a racist.’”

That, ladies and gentleman, was the perfect start to a near-perfect episode. C.K., in his fourth turn as host, starred in a number of memorable sketches, but perhaps none quite as memorable as Alec Baldwin playing both Bill O’Reilly and Trump in a post-Weekend Update O’Reilly Factor sketch. (Baldwin had already played Trump in the cold open, which you can watch and discuss here.) The evening also featured the inevitable mocking of that ridiculous Pepsi ad fronted by Kendall Jenner.

THE O’REILLY FACTOR
Baldwin’s O’Reilly began the sketch by talking about “a scandal no one thought I’d have the guts to address head-on, about the shocking allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of power that have been leveled against the Obama administration.” After discovering that his investigative reporter no longer worked for Fox News (“Did she get the check?”), O’Reilly turned to another reporter (played by Cecily Strong) who was reporting “via satellite from 500 yards away.” After a word from some less-than-desirable sponsors (including dog cocaine and the movie CHiPs), he finally addressed his own scandal by bringing on the only man who would come to his defense: President Trump.

PEPSI
Because of course the show had to talk about that Pepsi ad, this pre-taped sketch featured Beck Bennett as the man whose “singular vision” was responsible for the controversial commercial. After telling his sister over the phone about the concept of the video, “a homage to the resistance” that is “reminiscent of Black Lives Matter” starring Jenner, he is told that he has made a huge mistake. Unfortunately, it’s wayyyyy too late to make any changes.

THANK YOU, SCOTT!
This over-the-top music video cast C.K. as a man who was celebrated not for actually getting off of his couch and attempting to make the world a better place, but for watching the world fall apart on TV and “sharing an article with 84 Facebook friends.” It was perhaps the best political commentary of the night, poking fun at those who want to see change, but never take the initiative.

BIRTHDAY CLOWN
Bobby Moynihan played a clown under the assumption that he had been hired for a children’s birthday. Instead, he had been hired by 53-year-old Ernie, who was just trying to work through some stuff. A+ cringe comedy here.

SECTIONAL SOFA EMPORIUM
What seemed to be an ad for a thriving furniture business turned into the bizarre (and oft-hilarious) tale of a man (C.K.) who “used to have a family,” but instead devoted his life to sectional couches and lost everything.

IFC has renewed Brockmire for a second season — just hours before the new, Hank Azaria-led comedy steps up to the plate.

Brockmire, which stars its executive producer Azaria (The Simpsons) as the titular character, follows a famous baseball announcer 10 years after a public meltdown (triggered by his learning of his wife’s infidelity) that ruined his reputation and made him a viral sensation. The show’s cast also includes Amanda Peet (Togetherness) as the strong-willed owner of the Morristown Frackers minor league team and Tyrel Jackson Williams (Lab Rats) as an social media-savvy intern.

“This show is the most fun I’ve ever had. Well, the most fun I’ve ever had while working, anyway,” says Hank Azaria. “It is truly my favorite thing I’ve ever done. Well, while being filmed, that is. Thanks to IFC for letting us do whatever we wanted to. Well, mostly.”

The series premieres tonight at 10/9c on IFC. Season 2’s eight episodes will premiere in 2018.

Mercedes-Benz pulls ads from The O'Reilly Factor after sexual harassment allegations https://briefnews.eu/mercedes-benz-pulls-ads-from-the-oreilly-factor-after-sexual-harassment-allegations/ https://briefnews.eu/mercedes-benz-pulls-ads-from-the-oreilly-factor-after-sexual-harassment-allegations/#respond Tue, 04 Apr 2017 01:35:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mercedes-benz-pulls-ads-from-the-oreilly-factor-after-sexual-harassment-allegations/

In the wake of a report from The New York Times regarding the sexual harassment of female employees by cable news host Bill O’Reilly, Mercedes-Benz has pulled advertising from his Fox News show, The O’Reilly Factor. According to CNN Money, Mercedes explained that the advertisements were “reassigned” amid the controversy, and that the allegations are “disturbing” and don’t reflect the automaker’s view of the importance of women.

Five cases totaling roughly $ 13 million have been settled regarding sexual harassment or verbal abuse by O’Reilly, according to The Times. His show has been on air for nearly 20 years and is one of the most profitable shows on Fox News. The show generated $ 446 million in ad revenue between 2014 and 2016. While Mercedes-Benz may be the first company to pull ads, it may not be the last. Lexus also currently has ads airing during the show, and told CNN Money that it will monitor and evaluate the situation as it develops.

We have reached out to Mercedes-Benz for comment.

Report: Fox News' Bill O'Reilly Linked to $13 Million in Harassment Settlements https://briefnews.eu/report-fox-news-bill-oreilly-linked-to-13-million-in-harassment-settlements/ https://briefnews.eu/report-fox-news-bill-oreilly-linked-to-13-million-in-harassment-settlements/#respond Sat, 01 Apr 2017 23:34:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/report-fox-news-bill-oreilly-linked-to-13-million-in-harassment-settlements/

In a new report published on Saturday, The New York Times claims that Bill O’Reilly and Fox News have paid $ 13 million in harassment settlements involving five different women who have accused O’Reilly of misconduct. Of the five, two settlements are said to have been reached following the departure of former Fox News chairman Roger Ailes, who resigned last July in the wake of a harassment suit filed against him by former network personality Gretchen Carlson.

According to the Times, an investigation found that five women have “received payouts from either Mr. O’Reilly or [21st Century Fox] in exchange for agreeing to not pursue litigation or speak about their accusations against him.” Of the settlements, two of the five were previously known, including a $ 9 million settlement paid out in 2004 to former producer Andrea Mackris. Of the other three, two are said to involvement allegations of sexual harassment, while the other alleges that O’Reilly verbally scolded “a young producer in front of newsroom colleagues.” All of the accusers either worked for the host of The O’Reilly Factor or appeared on his show.

O’Reilly has since responded to the report via his website. In his statement, he refers to himself as a “target” who is “vulnerable to lawsuits” as a “prominent” person, but does not deny that settlements have been reached. His full statement reads as follows:

“Just like other prominent and controversial people, I’m vulnerable to lawsuits from individuals who want me to pay them to avoid negative publicity. In my more than 20 years at Fox News Channel, no one has ever filed a complaint about me with the Human Resources Department, even on the anonymous hotline.

But most importantly, I’m a father who cares deeply for my children and who would do anything to avoid hurting them in any way. And so I have put to rest any controversies to spare my children.

The worst part of my job is being a target for those who would harm me and my employer, the Fox News Channel. Those of us in the arena are constantly at risk, as are our families and children. My primary efforts will continue to be to put forth an honest TV program and to protect those close to me.”

21st Century Fox, meanwhile, issued the following response:

“21st Century Fox takes matters of workplace behavior very seriously. Notwithstanding the fact that no current or former Fox News employee ever took advantage of the 21st Century Fox hotline to raise a concern about Bill O’Reilly, even anonymously, we have looked into these matters over the last few months and discussed them with Mr. O’Reilly. While he denies the merits of these claims, Mr. O’Reilly has resolved those he regarded as his personal responsibility. Mr. O’Reilly is fully committed to supporting our efforts to improve the environment for all our employees at Fox News.”

O’Reilly has been with Fox News for over 20 years. According to The Wall Street Journal, his contract was recently renewed by the cable news network despite having knowledge of what was reported by the Times.
