It all kicks off at 8 a.m. PT today, so make sure to come here for the latest updates from Nvidia or watch the RTX 4090 event live.
This is a breaking story. Once the keynote begins, this page will continue to be updated live as more announcements and updates roll in from the event.
]]>
Graphics card manufacturer eVGA has made a name for itself manufacturing and selling Nvidia’s GeForce GPUs for two decades, including some of the more attractively priced options on the market. But according to the YouTubers at Gamers Nexus, analyst Jon Peddie, and an EVGA forum post, EVGA is officially terminating its relationship with Nvidia and will not be manufacturing cards based on the company’s RTX 4000-series GPUs.
EVGA’s graphics cards have exclusively used Nvidia GPUs since its founding in 1999, and according to Gamers Nexus, GeForce sales represent 80 percent of EVGA’s revenue, making this a momentous and arguably company-endangering change. But EVGA CEO Andrew Han told Gamers Nexus that the decision was about “principle” rather than financials—Han complained about a lack of communication from Nvidia about new products, including information about pricing and availability.
Nvidia’s pricing strategy was apparently another sore point for EVGA. Nvidia’s first-party Founders Edition cards could often undercut the pricing of cards offered by EVGA and other vendors, forcing them to either lower prices or lose sales as a result.
]]>In a statement to Gamers Nexus, which broke the news, EVGA stated “this is not a financial decision, it is a principled decision.” EVGA has accused Nvidia of keeping partners out of the loop on future products, cutting GPU prices without warning, and limiting what prices GPUs can be set at. According to an Nvidia staff member who spoke to Gamers Nexus, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang sometimes wonders “why are these guys [EVGA and other Nvidia partners] making money when they’re not doing much?”
One of the main issues is that Nvidia sells its own Founder’s Edition models for significantly less than models from partners. EVGA reportedly loses hundreds of dollars on each RTX 3080, 3090, and 3090 Ti it sells as it needs to cut prices to remain competitive with Nvidia. That figure only considers manufacturing, however.
Although EVGA says this isn’t a financial decision, finances are certainly at play. Jon Peddie Research noted that the gross margin for Nvidia has continued to increase year after year while the already small margin for GPU partner companies has declined. In its 2022 estimate, Jon Peddie Research believes Nvidia will see about 65% gross margin for its entire business while AIB partners will just see 5%. Declining margins are down to increasing costs for production, R&D, and marketing. According to Jon Peddie Research, making up low margins on volume is no longer appealing.

Gamers Nexus was skeptical of EVGA’s story, however. In its report, host Steve Burke suggest the company was probably ordering too many GPUs during the crypto boom and could have gotten burned by the sudden decline in mining. Burke notes that something similar happened with its RTX 20-series GPUs when the company lost money in the six-digit range.
EVGA CEO Andrew Han might also have personal reasons for ending the partnership. Gamers Nexus says that Han, who is in his 60s and has been CEO since EVGA was founded in 2000, wants to spend more time with his family as he approaches retirement and feels that Nvidia’s allegedly disrespectful attitude is no longer worth the trouble.

Although 78% of EVGA’s revenue is derived from its graphics business, the company says it will continue to operate its other ventures. The company’s next largest venture is power supplies, and while it only makes up 20% of EVGA’s revenue, it has four times the gross margin of its graphics business. Losing the vast majority of its revenue is still problematic, however, though EVGA explicitly denied that there would be any layoffs.
Han also denied he would sell EVGA. The company is apparently in a healthy financial position. Furthermore, the CEO didn’t want to deprecate EVGA’s reputation by selling it to another company that might only be interested in profit.
While EVGA could potentially partner up with AMD or Intel to preserve its AIB GPU business, the company has make it clear that it will not be making any GPUs in the future. Gamers Nexus speculates that EVGA’s CEO might have personal reasons for not wanting to pursue a partnership with Nvidia’s competitors, similar to his personal reasons for terminating the partnership with Nvidia.
As for existing EVGA GPUs, the company confirmed it would honor warranties and RMAs as long as supplies last. Its supply of RTX 30-series cards will run out by the end of the year, however, and it’s not certain how easy it will then be for EVGA to uphold its warranties, whether or not the company is willing.
]]>The company says the event will include "the latest breakthroughs in gaming, creating and graphics technology." NVIDIA is expected to reveal its RTX 40-series graphics cards during the broadcast — an image the company shared to promote the event includes the GeForce RTX Logo. NVIDIA previously said it would release its first Ampere Next-based GPUs this year. Those will supplant graphics cards with the current Ampere architecture.
It remains to be seen just how well the RTX 40-series cards will perform. In the meantime, the 30-series GPUs are finally readily available after the cryptocurrency market cratered.

If you needed any further evidence that NVIDIA is becoming more of a direct competitor for Intel, you might just have it. A Calcalist source claimed that NVIDIA has made an offer to acquire Mellanox, a chip maker best known for its high-performance computing and networking tech. While it’s not clear how much NVIDIA has been willing to pay, Reuters insiders said that NVIDIA could pay more than $ 7 billion — well past the $ 6 billion Intel reportedly offered a few months ago.
Mellanox and Intel have declined to comment, while NVIDIA wasn’t available for comment on the weekend. Xilinx is also believed to be involved in the bidding, but Reuters believed that NVIDIA is close enough that it could unveil a deal as soon as March 11th.
While the exact reasons for a potential deal aren’t clear, NVIDIA would have more than a few incentives to buy Mellanox — some of which you might notice. It could be most helpful for servers, supercomputers and other situations where you need many processors working in tandem. At the same time, it could also be useful for self-driving cars (where multiple processors may have to coordinate actions), or even ensuring fast connections between multiple GPUs in workstations and gaming PCs.
For Intel, it would be more of a defensive play. Intel and Mellanox have both cornered the market for the InfiniBand technology used to link computer clusters, and this could help keep the technology out of the hands of NVIDIA, AMD and other competitors. It could also help with Intel’s ambitions as it eyes quantum computing and other technologies that could depend on very fast connections.

On Monday, Nvidia took the unusual step of offering a revised Q4 2019 financial estimate ahead of its scheduled disclosure on February 14. The reason: Nvidia had already predicted low revenue numbers, and the hardware producer is already confident that its low estimate was still too high.
The original quarterly revenue estimate of $ 2.7 billion has since dropped to $ 2.2 billion, a change of roughly 19 percent. A few new data points factor into that revision. The biggest consumer-facing issue, according to Nvidia, is “lower than expected” sales of its RTX line of new graphics cards. This series, full of proprietary technologies like a dedicated raytracing processor, kicked off in September 2018 with the $ 1,199 RTX 2080 Ti and the $ 799 RTX 2080.
“These products deliver a revolutionary leap in performance and innovation with real-time raytracing and AI, but some customers may have delayed their purchase while waiting for lower price points and further demonstrations of RTX technology in actual games,” Nvidia said in a statement. As of press time, only one retail game, Battlefield V, has tapped into the RTX-only raytracing system.

HP saved a lot of updates to its Omen gaming family for CES 2019. Namely, the Omen Obelisk desktop—the pre-built machine that’s designed to tempt those who prefer to build their own gaming PCs—will be much more powerful in 2019 thanks to new processors, graphics, and memory support.
HP debuted the Obelisk at the end of last summer as a fully customizable gaming tower. Its starting price of less than $ 1,000 appealed to those who didn’t necessarily want to spend a ton on a gaming PC. However, the Obelisk could quickly cost more than $ 2,000 with various upgrades and enhancements.

A bunch of social media personalities have teased the Titan RTX, NVIDIA’s next flagship GPU, in what looks like a coordinated campaign. Google Brain co-founder Andrew Ng showed off the card on Twitter in an otherwise vanilla recruiting photo, “slow mo guy” Gavin Free teased a shot of it on Instagram with his cat, and Linus from Linus Tech Tips “accidentally” pulled the card out twice on his YouTube show.
It’s unlikely that these folks broke any kind of NDA, all simultaneously. That means NVIDIA wants us to know that the card is real and is trying to drum up excitement for a launch that’s likely happening soon.
We still don’t know the date, specs or price, but we can take a guess at all three. The Titan RTX will likely pack 72 RT cores and 12GB of GDDR6 memory, according to previous leaks, besting the RTX 2080 Ti’s 68 RT cores and 11GB of GDDR6 memory. That’s a pretty modest bump over the current top-end model, but gamers who want the best will no doubt pay.
And that price is likely to be steep — the last Titan XP model was released for $ 1,200, and the GTX 1080 Ti cost $ 700 last year. However, the RTX 2080 Ti already costs $ 1,200, so expect the Titan RTX to be north of that. As for the arrival date, the Titan XP launched about two months after the 1080 Ti, so by that standard, the Titan RTX is due (checks calendar) … imminently.

Greetings, Arsians! Courtesy of our friends at TechBargains, we have another round of deals to share. Today’s list is headlined by a bundle that pairs a Google Home Mini smart speaker with Nvidia’s Shield media streamer at no extra cost.
The deal applies to the standard Shield variant, which costs $ 179, as well as the $ 199 version that comes with the streamer’s dedicated gaming controller, if you have any interest in using Nvidia’s GeForce Now game streaming service. We’ve seen all manner of discounts on the Home Mini in recent months, but it normally goes for $ 49.
The Shield itself isn’t for everyone in a world where Roku and Amazon are selling 4K HDR streamers for $ 50. But if you’re not an Apple user, it’s still arguably the best streamer on the market for power users. The Shield has no Dolby Vision, but there is 4K, HDR10, and Dolby Atmos support, and its performance is still admirable in 2018. It particularly shines with local file playback, and it can serve as its own Plex server. The game streaming is a nice bonus, and while Android TV still has its cluttered spots, it’s simple enough to get around, and Nvidia has continuously supported the device with software updates. The Home Mini, meanwhile, is still capable if you’re on the Google Assistant train and can now turn on the Shield with voice commands.
]]>Nvidia’s new 20-series video cards, due to ship next week, will introduce a new overclocking system: Scanner.
Overclocking is typically a trial-and-error process: increase the clock speed, run some intensive workloads to make sure everything works OK, maybe fiddle with the GPU voltage to eke out a bit more stability. Push the clock speed too high, and the system stands a good chance of locking up and crashing. This means that finding the optimal settings can cause lots of rebooting and adjustment. Verifying that the GPU really is stable at a given speed is also a challenge, as not all workloads use all parts of the chip. A given clock speed might be fine for some kinds of software but not others.
Scanner will make this process a lot more automatic and trustworthy. It will run incrementally and increase the clock speed and voltage of the GPU to build a profile of a specific card’s capabilities, testing the GPU’s computing ability at each speed to make sure that it’s operating properly. Generally there will be arithmetic errors, rather than outright crashes, when the GPU is being operated only very slightly faster than it can support. So by making only small adjustments, Scanner can probe the limits of what the chip can handle without the crashes and reboots, and without human intervention. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
