As bitcoin crashes through multiple $ 1,000 milestones, it looks like the crypto boost chip makers AMD and Nvidia have enjoyed is finally coming to an end.
“While the Blockchain software technology is here to stay … we expect crypto-mining will be a much less meaningful market for AMD/NVDA in 2018,” Vijay Rakesh, an analyst at Mizuho Securities said in a note to clients.
Both Nvidia and AMD have enjoyed increased demand for their graphics processing unit chips thanks to their abilities to speed up some cryptocurrency mining. But, as the power required to mine bitcoin remains out of reach for individual miners, and ethereum looks to move to a different payment verification system in the next six months, it looks like that demand will be much lower than current levels.
When bitcoin first started, individuals known as miners would lend computing power to bitcoin’s blockchain network to help verify payments and were rewarded with small payments in bitcoin for their services. These miners soon figured out that GPUs from AMD and Nvidia were well suited to the type of math used to verify payments and bought them in droves.
As bitcoin, and other cryptocurrencies, exploded in price and popularity, it looked as if AMD and Nvidia’s share prices would mirror bitcoin’s rise. Both companies have said that cryptocurrency miners have made it hard for retailers to keep their products in stock, and the graphics card business has been booming because of it.
The companies approached the crypto market a bit differently, though. AMD has said previously that it appreciated the crypto boost, but has not focused on addressing it directly because it doesn’t see crypto mining as “long-term growth driver.” Nvidia has had the opposite reaction to the boom, saying it will stay very close to the market and react as needed.
Now, Rakesh thinks that both companies should move on.
“We believe it is increasingly important for AMD/NVDA to show traction in core PC/NB, DT, Gaming and Data Center markets in 2018,” Rakesh wrote.
Rakesh reiterated his buy rating for both companies. He has a price target of $ 225 for Nvidia and a $ 17 price target for AMD.
AMD is down 1.46% this year, while Nvidia is up 106.71%.

Shares of Nvidia and AMD, two of the world’s largest chipmakers whose businesses have recently been fueled by supplying graphics cards for cryptocurrency mining, are falling Friday morning after almost every single cryptocurrency slumped. Some were down by as much as 35%.
NVDA was down 1.52% at $ 192.92 a share, while AMD was lower by 4.65% at $ 10.38.
Both companies have profited from the explosion in interest surrounding cryptocurrencies and the necessity of so-called mining, which was born alongside bitcoin in 2009.
Miners quickly figured out the type of math required to mine digital coins was made faster by introducing graphics cards initially used to improve video game graphics. Nvidia, as well as rival AMD, has profited massively from the trend.
Some analysts have already argued that the two companies’ moat was shrinking as bitcoin and ethereum begin to slow their astronomical ascent, but an RBC Capital Markets analyst said last week that there’s still room to run on smaller cryptocurrencies that aren’t as large as the big three (bitcoin, ethereum and bitcoin cash).
Unfortunately, even smaller coins were getting smacked down on Friday — and things could really go downhill for Nvidia and AMD from here.
Ethereum, which has a market cap of $ 60 billion according to coinmarketcap.com, is contemplating a shift to a “proof of stake” system instead of the industry-standard “proof of work.” This means payments on the Ethereum blockchain might soon happen via a sort of voting system rather than a race to find the answer to a complicated math problem, which is the current verification method. That could decimate the impact a GPU has on the mining prices.
Still, Wall Street remains rather bullish on both stocks. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg give NVDA and AMD prices targets of $ 224 and $ 14.60, respectively — both healthy premiums to where they are currently trading.

Bitcoin is still too risky for many investors with a lot of money at stake.
But there’s a handful of stocks that stand to benefit from bitcoin and the underlying blockchain technology, according to Tom Lee, a strategist at Fundstrat and one of the most prominent advocates for the cryptocurrency.
The basket of 12 stocks he recommended in a note Friday has gained 136% this year. That’s more than the S&P 500’s 18% rally, but is dwarfed by bitcoin’s 1,588% rise.
“We believe investors should have exposure to blockchain, particularly given bitcoin has essentially zero correlation to equities, bonds and commodities — hence, as a portfolio strategy, bitcoin is a good diversification tool,” Lee said. He sees one bitcoin costing $ 25,000 by the end of 2022.
The stocks Lee recommends offer “three types of leverage— (i) price gains of bitcoin/tokens; (ii) transaction activity (either wallets or exchanges); and (iii) mining based on proof of work or proof of stake.”
Here they are, in ascending order of how much exposure Lee estimates they have to bitcoin:

Cryptocurrencies have had a crazy year. As an example, ethereum has rocketed about 2,073.24% higher over the last year. The meteoric rise has been a big boost for graphics card makers like AMD and Nvidia, but the end is in sight.
Ethereum’s rise has been good for AMD and Nvidia because the companies’ graphics processing units are used to “mine” ethereum.
With ethereum’s price dramatically increasing, it became economical to buy a GPU and use it to mine ethereum. Both AMD and Nvidia have profited from miners buying their GPUs, to the point that the cards from both companies were hard to find on shelves.
The question is, how long will ethereum miners continue to buy AMD and Nvidia’s cards? According to one analyst at Barclays, the companies can breathe a sigh of relief for now, although a change in mining algorithms is coming and could be a problem.
“Artificial difficulty bombs are delayed until (estimated) 4Q18 as Proof-of-Stake is not ready yet,” Blayne Curtis, an analyst at Barclays, said in a note to clients. “This means difficulty increases much more slowly, improving the trajectory of expected profits (holding all else equal) and likely sustains GPU sales for mining.”
The proof-of-stake system Curtis called a “difficulty bomb” is a new way of verifying payments on the ethereum network. Instead of asking miners to solve complicated math problems that are well-suited to being calculated on GPUs, it operates under a sort of voting system where users vote on which payments are correct. The ethereum network is expected to eventually shift to this sort of verification, but it’s not ready yet.
If and when ethereum does move to proof-of-stake verification, GPUs wouldn’t give miners as much of an edge on the network, meaning the cards would fall out of vogue as a way of grabbing a larger piece of the verification payments. Luckily for Nvidia and AMD, this move was pushed back, and isn’t expected until the end of 2018.
Because of this, Curtis raised his price targets for Nvidia and AMD. Essentially, both companies get to ride the cryptocurrency wave that increased demand for their chips for another year. Curtis raised his target for AMD from $ 9 to $ 10, and his price target for Nvidia from $ 140 to $ 200.
Curtis favors Nvidia because of its dominance in AI and he predicts that Nvidia’s cards will continue to perform at higher levels than AMD’s for the foreseeable future.
“The Crypto tailwind is hard to quantify but likely 2x the $ 170-180 million AMD/Nvidia identified in June with some gaming card manufacturers seeing 50-70% of current demand from mining as gaming demand is actually declining this year,” Curtis said.
AMD is up 17.37% this year, while Nvidia is up 77.55%.

Tesla
Tesla may be parting ways with Nvidia for good.
The electric car maker will no longer use chips from Nvidia to power its massive infotainment console, Bloomberg’s Ian King first reported. Instead, Tesla will use chips supplied by Intel, the world’s largest chipmaker.
The Model 3 and new versions of the Model X and Model S will rely on the Intel chips, according to the report.
Nvidia declined to comment on the report. A Tesla representative said the company doesn’t comment on speculation.
Nvidia also supplies the chips to power Tesla’s Autopilot system, but may not do so for much longer. CNBC reported Wednesday that Tesla is developing its own chip to power its future self-driving cars.

Everyone is focused on the wrong area of tech right now.
Augmented reality is arguably the hottest trend in the sector, and it’s one of the most exciting features of Apple’s recently announced iPhone X. Microsoft, Google, and Apple all have their own AR platforms and countless other companies have AR applications for those platforms already. It’s exciting stuff.
But, it’s all a distraction. In the future, AR will just be the surface level technology that covers the truly exciting technology underneath.
“AR is a very promising interface, as a way for people in interact with computers. Which is fantastic and important,” Aaron Shapiro, the CEO of the marketing firm Huge, told Business Insider. “But machine learning is a whole new way for computers to compute.”
Shapiro says that machine learning is the truly interesting technology for his firm. Marketers, including Huge, are working on AR applications right now, but ultimately will move to machine learning as well as development becomes easier. Shapiro illustrates this power of machine learning vs AR with a coffee shop example.
Huge Cafe is a real coffee shop in Atlanta that Shapiro’s company uses to test marketing ideas on real customers. He says that one day, customers won’t be ordering coffee in person. He said machine learning applications are going to realize that you are heading to the coffee shop based on factors like your direction, path and time of day. The applications are then going to place your coffee order, and automatically pay for you when you arrive and pick up your latte from the counter.

“If you think about today you can’t imagine having a service that is not mobile first, it’d just be odd,” Shapiro said. “Five years from it’s going to be just as odd using a service that is not smart and doesn’t continually adjust and adapt to how you use it and how it can better serve your needs. That’s the power of machine learning.”
If you need more evidence of machine learning’s importance to the future of tech, just look behind the scenes at the biggest tech firms.
Apple’s face recognition technology in the iPhone X was trained using machine learning, and the new processor powering the phone has a dedicated chip built in that makes machine learning applications on the phone faster than previous iterations.
Google has recently refocused the entire company on AI. “In an AI first world, we are rethinking all our products, and applying machine learning and AI to solve user problems,” Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai said at the company’s developer conference earlier this year.
Shapiro said that the best uses of AR in the future aren’t standalone apps, but the integration of AR into existing apps that will take advantage of machine learning. He said the best examples of this are furniture store apps that let you place virtual furniture in your home or apps like the one his company is working on with Lowe’s which will let you measure complicated objects in your home instantly by pointing your phone’s camera at them. Both of these applications use AR as a way to visually display results generated by the complicated machine learning algorithms that are working to process the images and measure and scale objects.
Companies with AR platforms stand to benefit the most from the technology, Shapiro said. Apple and Google both have developer platforms for AR, and large install bases ready to play and test new AR applications. Companies like Nvidia, Google, and AMD could benefit from the machine learning technology boom. Each of those companies makes chips that speed up the training of machine learning systems and could see an increase in demand as more companies start developing their own machine learning systems.
“I love technology that makes things simple and more powerful for people,” Shapiro said. “[Machine learning] is another step function ahead for tremendous simplicity and removal of friction in people’s day to day lives.”

The $ 1 billion equity long-short fund had been up about 10% after fees around this time last year, Business Insider previously reported. Carlson Capital manages about $ 9 billion firmwide.
Markets Insider“We are naturally disappointed by the performance of the first half of 2017,” the portfolio managers, Richard Maraviglia and Matthew Barkoff, wrote in the fund’s second-quarter letter, which was also reviewed by Business Insider.
In the letter, dated June, Maraviglia and Barkoff said their fund remained short the stock market, notably in the semiconductor space. But the surge in interest in bitcoin and ethereum has pushed shares of semiconductor makers higher. Their chips are used in the computers that solve complex equations to mine for cryptocurrencies.
From the letter (emphasis added):
“Our biggest short theme since the first quarter has been semiconductors where we see high inventories, double ordering, massive capex supply responses and actual pockets of weakening demand in smartphones, autos, and the Chinese optical market. Nonetheless, the sector has turned into something of a bubble characterized best by the surge in GPU stocks, Advanced Micro Devices and Nvidia, driven by a cryptocurrency mania. Bitcoin and Ethereum have fallen sharply over the past month, and we believe they will fall a lot more. We believe the other side of this incredibly powerful consensus move in technology will be very profitable for us but to date, it has been a significant drag on performance.”
Carlson’s flagship fund, Double Black Diamond, LP, is also down for the year, losing -2.1% this year through the end of July. That fund had just over $ 5 billion in assets as of 2013, founder Clint Carlson told trade publication P&I.
The firm has seven funds in total. Here’s Carlson’s scorecard for the firm’s five other funds, this year through July 31:
