Disney’s latest Christmas film takes a classic tale and reimagines it for a new audience.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms features an A-list cast, impressive CGI and world-class dancing to bring the story to life.

The movie is based on ETA Hoffmann’s short story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King as well as Marius Petipa’s The Nutcracker ballet.

Of course, one way to see the movie is to head to cinemas.

Can you watch The Nutcracker and the Four Realms full movie online? Is it legal?

Unfortunately for those not wanting to brave the cold nor the crowds, you cannot watch The Nutcracker and the Four Realms online.

Any site purporting the movie for streaming is undoubtedly illegal, so steer clear.

The estimated release date for a digital download and DVD is February 2019.

Sites like Amazon offer pre-ordering of the DVD, but there is no confirmed date for when it will be released.

So far there are only DVD and Blu-ray options for preorder, but a digital download will likely accompany them in time.

The home entertainment releases will likely include behind the scenes footage, interviews, and deleted scenes.

For its opening weekend, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms came in at the lower end of industry estimates.

However, the Disney movie still placed second in opening weekends (coming behind Bohemian Rhapsody’s box office takings).

Disney is set to launch its own streaming website in 2019.

With this addition to the plethora of streaming sites, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms will likely end up on Disney’s site, instead of on sites like Netflix or Now TV.

Time will tell whether Disney’s gamble on its in-house streaming service pays off.

For now, if you want to see The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, you’ll have to head to cinemas.

Unless you’re in Australia, Hungary, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Romania, or Russia.

For Australia and Hungary, you’ll have to wait until November 22, for France until November 28, and for Hong Kong until November 29.

Japan and Romania have a November 30 release date, while Russia is last with a December 8 release.

Though The Nutcracker and the Four Realms has not received critical acclaim, it will likely resonate with children.

The film stars Keira Knightley, Mackenzie Foy, Eugenio Derbez, Matthew Macfadyen, Richard E. Grant, Misty Copeland, Helen Mirren, and Morgan Freeman.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is out in UK and US cinemas now.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Whatever algorithm it is through which modern Disney movies are made (young women whose smarts are demonstrated by a penchant for tinkering, a missing parent, dubious authority figures, a cast peppered with recognizable stars), it’s hit a high point with The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Though the film occasionally descends into the same CGI soup that made the recent Beauty and the Beast so baffling, it manages to keep a firmer grip on reality — which means that its flights into fancy are that much more of a delight.

Directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, the film’s offerings aren’t so much to do with its plot as with visual spectacle and character turns. It’s lush and colorful in a way that’s refreshing when so much of popular media trends towards blandness or darkness — and, of course, in a way that befits its status as a holiday-themed story. At times, it becomes so colorful that it’s tempting to compare the film to anime rather than any of the other films in the Disney stable, especially as the adventures veer into somewhat demented territory and star Mackenzie Foy’s eyes seem to grow larger by the minute.

As Clara Stahlbaum, she’s charged with bringing order back to the magical Four Realms, which she stumbles across after following clues left by her late mother and her godfather Drosselmeyer (Morgan Freeman). To aid her is, of course, Nutcracker soldier Philip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), as the Sugar Plum Fairy (Keira Knightley), Shiver (Richard E. Grant), and Hawthorne (Eugenio Derbez) attempt to maintain peace while Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren) wreaks havoc.

Though Clara is an appealing heroine — she is the first female protagonist in such a movie who’s really been allowed to demonstrate a measure of aggression and selfishness without being judged or reproached for doing so — the show ultimately belongs to Knightley. The four regents all look outrageous (which I mean in the best way possible) but Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy takes the cake. Armed with what 30 Rock referred to as a “sexy baby voice” and a mountain of pink candy floss hair, she turns in the kind of performance that is essentially her Colin Farrell in The Lobster, her Jude Law in Dom Hemingway, her Brad Pitt in Burn After Reading. It’s like nothing we’ve ever seen her do before — it’s camp to the degree that it’s irresistible — and seems to signal that she’s about to buck every preconceived notion as to her niche and enter into an era of wildcard character actor roles.

Her performance has the effect, however, of making the rest of the film pale by comparison, as none of the rest of it (Grant and Derbez are sadly wasted, possibly a result of the film changing directorial hands) holds a candle to just how hard she leans into the material. Granted, that has a little to do with the fact that the rest of said material is fairly cookie-cutter in relation to how hard the film’s creative team has worked to make the settings pop. The balance shows, sometimes — the film coheres best when what’s being showcased merits that kind of lavish visual attention.

For instance, there’s an inevitable nod to The Nutcracker‘s ballet iteration (as filtered through a Fantasia lens that mostly serves to remind us of that superior movie), and Misty Copeland’s accompanying performance is perhaps the most stunning part of the film. There’s little that can compare to Tchaikovsky’s original work, which we as an audience are reminded of each time the score lifts passage from the composer’s work to underscore the action.

That said, the film at least has its cast in its favor. I mean Knightley and Foy, but everyone else as well, particularly the charming Fowora-Knight. Besides A Wrinkle in Time, this is the first significant Disney film to seem to feature color-blind casting, and it’s a gambit that mostly pays off. Though Fowora-Knight is the only major character played by a person of color (Drosselmeyer is a tertiary character at best, and Derbez has even less to do), the overall world is still populated with people of color in a way that doesn’t stick out — it feels normal.

There’s plenty to groan about in The Nutcracker and the Four Realms as far as life lessons go, but there’s such a manic energy and undercurrent of unapologetic weirdness to the proceedings that it’s a delight nevertheless. Its idiosyncrasies are its selling points — including a Mouse King straight out of the nightmares of most, if not all, New Yorkers, or anyone who’s ever dealt with mice at home — and it’s an edge that’s welcome in a landscape where fairytales and children’s movies are generally dreadfully anodyne.

REVIEW: The Nutcracker at Royal Albert Hall https://briefnews.eu/review-the-nutcracker-at-royal-albert-hall/ https://briefnews.eu/review-the-nutcracker-at-royal-albert-hall/#respond Sat, 30 Dec 2017 00:28:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/review-the-nutcracker-at-royal-albert-hall/

How many Nutcrackers can one city need?

London has an embarrassment of riches this year as The BRB’s inventive take on the classic pitches up in the grandest tent of all.

The Royal Albert Hall is a glorious venue but it is a huge echoing cavern, quite a challenge for any show without the advantage of sets and the curving seating pattern preventing any sight-blocking scenery on either side.

On its debut of this new variation, this reworking of the BRB’s annual home production rises to the challenge in a production that is impressive if not perfectly en pointe.

It’s worth seeing for the magical moment it snows in front of the awe-struck audience alone.

This is a show almost as famous for the tunes as the toe-twinking delights and the fine orchestra played the famous score with brio and clarity, making those overly familiar numbers from countles adverts fresh and spine-tingling. Elevated on a balcony above the stage, with the Hall’s glorious organ towering over it, the orchestra becomes a feature of the staging adding real grandeur.

Two huge screens either side of the organ rise up during the transformation scene. The projections are from the award-winning 59 Productions, who worked on the hit stage show An American in Paris as well as London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. The tree may not grow but huge baubles descend fron the ceiling and huge projections shimmer actoss the entitre backdrop. It’s a moment more Cirque de Soleil than classic ballet, but tremendously effective.

Indeed, it is best to view this not as a traditional ballet but rather as a grand entertainment.

There was much to enjoy from the company itself, sharp and effective throughout with Tzu Chao Cho outstanding as the acrobatic Jack-In-The-Box.

The addition of male dancers as The Winds in the iconic snowflakes scene adds drama and dazzling dynamism. The costumes here and in the sumptuously danced Waltz of the lowers are particularly stunning.

Momoko Hirata steals the show as an exquisite Sugar Plum Fairy and Karla Doorbar is fresh and joyous as Clara, bringing light and grace to every step.

Given the absence of major sets, it’s a shame that Jonathan Payne makes so little impression as Drosselmeyer. His character should be powerful and mysterious, driving the show and the plot. In such a large space on an unadorned stage he needs to sweep the audience along with Clara into a world of magic, but Payne was more like a kindly uncle, lacking mpact.

Similarly, I struggled to connect with the Nutcracker’s story. Once he is human and has taken Clara to the Land of Snow, he is mainly AWOL until he returns to dance the grand pas de deux with the Sugar Plaum Fairy.

This narrative choice removes the budding romance with Clara and fudges the underlying core story that he needs to be rescued. Cesar Morales is solid in the role but also lacked charisma. With no emotionally cathartic and redemptive resolution to Clara and Drosselmeyer’s stories at the end, the show somewhat fades out rather than leaving an overwhelming  glow.

This is a show with grand and innovative set pieces and some wonderful dancing. With some minor tweaks it could be a thrilling alternative to rival the best that London has to offer.

The ENB Nutcracker at London Coliseum is a Christmas cracker of a show https://briefnews.eu/the-enb-nutcracker-at-london-coliseum-is-a-christmas-cracker-of-a-show/ https://briefnews.eu/the-enb-nutcracker-at-london-coliseum-is-a-christmas-cracker-of-a-show/#respond Sat, 16 Dec 2017 07:13:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-enb-nutcracker-at-london-coliseum-is-a-christmas-cracker-of-a-show/

In just a few years, the ENB has made its latest Nutcracker a real contender in the overcrowded Christmas stages across the UK.

Last year’s London leg saw almost 80,000 thrilled by the sumptuous retelling of the most seasonal of ballets.

This year has seen the ENB dazzle London with Akram Khan’s jaw-dropping reinvention of Giselle before settling back in the comfortable crinolines and confectionary of the perennial favourite.

A new cast saw Shiori Kase as Clara and Joseph Caley as the Nephew in a performance that delivered pace and virtuoso delights.

It’s easy to become cynical about this ballet. Performed every year by a bewildering array of companies, it’s tempting to dismiss it as a tired cliche, a childish anachronism. But then you sit there in the dark as toys come to life, snow starts to fall and childishness gives way to childlike wonder.

From the moment the curtains reveal ice skaters in snowy Victoriana, this production never lets up the pace, but it’s when midnight strikes that this version comes to joyous life.

The rats are nicely done and the toy soldiers and their hobby horses have the delightful and familiar feel of well-loved toys rather than flashes costumes. I also particularly loved the inventive use of a giant rat trap to catapult cheese back the massed military foe.

Drosselmeyer’s hot air balloon also provide a moment of truly splendid wonder for kids (and the rest of us) of all ages.

The ENB decision to have Clara danced by an adult principal rather than a teenage waif can be a huge advantage. Shiori Kase is technically impressive in the role and comes into her own in icy spelndour for the grand pas de deux and iconic finale.

She is less convincing as the innocent young Clara and stiffly fails to communicate any sense of wonder or girlish glee as she starts her extraordinary adventure.

and Alina Cojocaru is a dream from the moment she is swept in the snowy forest. Leaps, extensions and spins float as featherlight as her fluttering shift and your spirits soar with her.

Guilherme Menezes as her Nutcracker is dynamic and Joseph Caley is a delight of clean lines and beaming exhuberance as the handsome Nephew (the Nutcracker in human form).

The corps de ballet is pleasingly drilled and full of delights in the snowflakes set piece. They also make a sumptuous and stirring explosion of colour and clarity in a thrilling Waltz of the Flowers that raised as many cheers as the usual crowd-pleasing solos.

Some productions stage the final act in a palace, making the succession of folk dances become slightly wearisome in a static setting. The ENB makes a virtue of economy by leaving it in the forest with changing backdrops and lighting for each dance, transporting us to Spain, Arabia, China and beyond. It’s the first time I actually enjoyed each one as a standalone vignette.

With deft and delightful choreography throughout by Wayne Eagling and lavish sets and costumes, this is a fine Nutcracker, indeed.

‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’ Details and Release Date Revealed [D23 Expo 2017] https://briefnews.eu/the-nutcracker-and-the-four-realms-details-and-release-date-revealed-d23-expo-2017/ https://briefnews.eu/the-nutcracker-and-the-four-realms-details-and-release-date-revealed-d23-expo-2017/#respond Mon, 17 Jul 2017 05:11:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-nutcracker-and-the-four-realms-details-and-release-date-revealed-d23-expo-2017/ Disney Franchise Timeline

While there are plenty of heavy-hitters at this edition of D23, Disney also used the expo to introduce a film that, while it has a famous title, may not be on as many radars as the movies coming out of Lucasfilm and Marvel. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is a fantastical take on an iconic story and the footage screened at the film’s panel suggests something similar to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland…with a lot more dancing.

The film will be released on November 2, 2018 and it’s clear the Disney sees this as one of next year’s big holiday releases. After all, The Nutcracker is a classic Christmas tale and if you add a lot of adventure and special effects, you may have a serious blockbuster on your hands.

The trailer we saw opens with a carriage moving through the snow, while the instantly recognizable voice of Morgan Freeman narrates that it is Christmas Eve, a time of mystery. We then see an elaborate Christmas party, with a young girl wandering through the house, following a strange thread. Eventually, her path leads her into a snow-covered land, fantastic and over-the-the-top in its design. There are a lot of patterns in this world and it looks, for better or worse, very similar to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland remake.

Interestingly, our own Peter Sciretta noted that the concept art shown after the trailer maybe looked more like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings rather than Alice in Wonderland.

What the trailer didn’t show was the Nutcracker himself, who will be brought to life via CGI. The elaborate ballet dance numbers will be created by Misty Copeland and Sergei Polunin, two of the world’s most respected modern dancers.

Lasse Hallström (Chocolat, A Dog’s Purpose) was hired to direct a live-action version of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms in March of 2016. Black List scribe Ashleigh Powell is writing the screenplay, Mark Gordon (Grey’s Anatomy) is producing, and Lindy Goldstein will serve as an executive producer.

Mackenzie Foy will play Clara, Keira Knightley will play the Sugar Plum Fairy, Morgan Freeman will play Drosselmeyer, Eugenio Derbez will play the Flower Realm King, Helen Mirren will play Mother Ginger, Miranda Hart plays Dew Drop Fairy, Ellie Bamber plays Louise, and ballerina Misty Copeland will star as The Ballerina.

The classic Nutcracker story, which debuted in 1892 from author E.T.A. Hoffmann, follows a young girl named Clara. On Christmas Eve, she and her family receive a bounty of gifts from their toymaker godfather, including a wooden nutcracker shaped like a man. When Clara goes to check on her new toy later that night, the clock strikes twelve. Suddenly the nutcracker grows to life size, and Clara finds herself in the middle of a battle between gingerbread men and mice. The story was adapted into one of the world’s most famous ballets, but there has yet to be a Nutcracker movie adaptation that has captured the world’s attention in a major way.

While the studio has recently turned its attention to creating live-action adaptations of their own classic films, this is one of the rare adaptations they’re working on that doesn’t have a famous animated Disney predecessor. But considering that the play has become a holiday classic, the idea of creating the definitive Nutcracker movie (and swimming in all of the money they’d stand to make from subsequent TV broadcasts every holiday season) must be extremely appealing to the Mouse House.

Kellyanne Conway’s Gucci ‘Nutcracker’ Inauguration Coat-Dress Outfit, ‘Baby’ Nickname By President Trump Gets Buzz [Video] https://briefnews.eu/kellyanne-conways-gucci-nutcracker-inauguration-coat-dress-outfit-baby-nickname-by-president-trump-gets-buzz-video/ https://briefnews.eu/kellyanne-conways-gucci-nutcracker-inauguration-coat-dress-outfit-baby-nickname-by-president-trump-gets-buzz-video/#respond Fri, 20 Jan 2017 21:35:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kellyanne-conways-gucci-nutcracker-inauguration-coat-dress-outfit-baby-nickname-by-president-trump-gets-buzz-video/ Kellyanne Conway's Inauguration Outfit, 'Baby' Nickname By President Trump Gets Buzz [Video]

Kellyanne Conway certainly got plenty of attention on social media, due to the outfit that Conway decided to wear during the 58th Presidential Inauguration of President Trump on Friday, January 20. As seen in the above photo, Kellyanne greeted former Vice President Dan Quayle, as Kellyanne wore a bright red hat. As seen in the following photo gallery showing Conway’s full outfit during the inauguration festivities, Kellyanne not only wore a bright red hat, along with white and blue on Friday – Conway chose to don a red dress the previous evening as President Trump kissed Kellyanne’s hand.

President Trump’s campaign manager drew mixed opinions for Kellyanne’s bold choice of an outfit for Inauguration Day. Conway has already had her own Twitter Moment created, with comparisons for Kellyanne to everyone from Paddington Bear to a toy solider to other images in memes being created online. Folks first spotted Conway’s red, white and blue outfit when Kellyanne was spotted at church services at St. John’s Episcopal Church. As soon as images and videos of Kellyanne were broadcast as Conway appeared at the church across from the White House in Washington, the response began on social media.

If anything, the kindest folks on social media are calling Conway’s look a patriotic outfit, since it contains all the colors of the U.S. flag, perhaps with Conway trying to represent more of a united front than the strictly Republican red dress Kellyanne donned the night before Inauguration Day.

A whole bunch of memes are comparing Conway’s outfit to the outfit donned by the Nutcracker soldier. First Lady Melania Trump also got plenty of notice for her powder blue Ralph Lauren ensemble, as seen in the below tweet.

With Conway showing up at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, on Friday, January 20, wearing such a bold outfit, the ensemble was sure to get notice. On Twitter, Conway’s outfit earned a plethora of comments. Some of those comments are noting that Kellyanne’s choice to wear such a notable outfit probably has sent the SNL costume designers into a frenzy, with the behind-the-scenes people likely trying to recreate Kellyanne’s look.

: “I’m sure the costume designers at are frantically recreating outfit for to wear tomorrow night!”

Whereas some people on Twitter are trying to figure out if Kellyanne wore a coat or a dress to the Inauguration Day events, others are reeling over the fact that President Trump called Conway “baby” the night before President Trump was sworn in as president. As seen in the below video from CNN, Mr. Trump praised Kellyanne for appearing certain networks that other men in the Trump camp would not. As a result, Trump kissed Conway’s hand as he said, “Thank you, baby.”

Meanwhile, some of the social media comments falling under popular phrases like “Conway dress” and “Kellyanne inauguration outfit” can be read below.

“Kellyanne Conway is bringing out the red, white and blue on .”

“Kellyanne Conway dressed as the era Trump wants to take America back to. ”

“Kellyanne Conway looked patriotic af today and if that bothers you, you should move. Also it was Gucci.”

“Kellyanne Conway’s out looking like the damn Republican Joker.”

“Why is KellyAnne Conway dressed like an American Girl doll? .”

“Is Kellyanne Conway’s inauguration outfit the sign that Trump wants to Make America 1776 Again? ”

“Meanwhile, Kellyanne’s clown costume is the latest in Trumpian fascist fashion.”

The fact that Kellyanne also visited a production of Hamilton received buzz online.
