This story is part of a series between OZY and Well Being Trust called Mental States of the Nation, where we explore ways that different states across the U.S. are enforcing and facilitating mental health parity. Linda Vollinger has been a school nurse for 10 years at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School in Palos Hills, Illinois. But if you think her job involves just handing out ice packs and Band-Aids, think again. President of her local chapter of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) and a former ER trauma nurse, Vollinger says her fellow school nurses do a lot more. Beyond scrapes and stomach aches, many school nurses are now the first stop for treating kids’ mental health. According to a 2018 study in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, the number of American children diagnosed with anxiety and/or depression has risen from 2.6 million in 2012 to nearly 15 million in 2018. Luckily, there’s growing evidence showing how school nurses can step in to help early on. Just up the highway from Amos Alonzo Stagg is Libertyville High School — another school dealing with the same mental health problem. School nurses here are seeing more and more students come to their office not just for small medical treatments, but also for quiet spaces to relieve stress. To meet these new demands, school nurses are being offered extra training in mental health as well as resources from the NASN. Some nurses are even being encouraged to develop detailed cooperation plans with school guidance counselors and social workers who have more formal training when it comes to dealing with mental health issues. “The school nurse is now more of a health detective,” Vollinger says, teasing out what might really be going on beneath a child’s ailments. “We have to look past benign complaints of stomach aches to see what the root of those problems really is. It could be issues at home, or depression, or stress at school.”
I think the school nurse will be a key person to help these students excel. Linda Vollinger, school nurse Vollinger believes that part of the reason they see so many more kids coming forward with their mental health issues is that there’s been a shift in the mindset of mental health. She feels society is becoming much more accepting of these health conditions. “People are seeing that it’s not something made up or something you can push under the rug.” Robin Henderson, PsyD and clinical liaison for Well Being Trust, agrees that mental health is becoming less stigmatized, but feels there’s still a long way to go. “If you had a kid in your school system who had cancer, you’d rally and do fundraisers,” she says. “If a kid attempts suicide and ends up in a psych unit, we don’t talk about it.” She is emphatic that adults have to change their frame of mind and understanding when it comes to mental health. Fortunately, both Amos Alonzo Stagg and Libertyville are cutting edge in this regard. Along with a team-based approach to treating the mental health issues, Vollinger’s school also created a space they call “the intervention room.” This space allows students — who would normally be expelled or suspended for their behavior — to remain in their classes, but also experience a consequence for their behavior. The intervention room has evolved over the years beyond just discipline. Staffed by a teacher and a teacher’s aide, it’s now the place for students who have returned to school from a long absence to decrease their stresses and anxiety over coming back. Additionally, if the nurse’s office or school counselor’s office isn’t available to help a student who needs a safe space to go, the intervention room can serve as a place for that too. The nurses at Libertyville are making a point to consult online resources and share information with one another, doing their best to learn how to talk to students struggling with mental health issues in a way that helps to position them for the best continued care. And given that the onset of mental health issues takes place for many people well before the age of 18, school nurses could play a vital role in helping people address, and overcome, challenges early on. Benjamin F. Miller, chief strategy officer for Well Being Trust, believes that if “there is an opportunity for early intervention, we are more likely to see people improve their outcomes and even recover from their problems.” This can be seen at Willow Bend Elementary in Rolling Meadows, Illinois where school nurses are making a point to talk more openly about mental health issues with the young students. Nurses will even consult with teachers, taking a more team-based approach to ensure all students feel safe at every point in school. But challenges persist. Illinois, for instance, does not mandate nurses in every district, so there are currently only 700 school nurses in the Illinois Association of School Nurses and almost 4,000 public schools across the state. School nursing positions can also be lower paying than traditional nursing jobs. However, Vollinger is encouraged by the number of younger women she sees going into school nursing as a profession. According to registered Census data, there were roughly 1.9 million registered nurses in the U.S. in 2009. And in just eight years, that number has grown to 2.4 million. “As time goes on and we see more and more individuals with mental health diagnoses,” she says, “I think the school nurse will be a key person to help these students excel.”
Lenox Hill Hospital
Nurses Lisa Schavrien and Erin Ainslie Smith wanted their patients’ voices to be heard on Election Day, even if they were unable to physically leave the hospital. So the two Lenox Hill nurses, along with a 20-person volunteer group, came together to help patients cast their vote this past Tuesday, according to the New York Post.
The volunteers headed into New York’s five boroughs to submit the applications, retrieve ballots, and bring them back to the hospital. After distributing the ballots, the volunteer team ran back to the boroughs to submit patients’ votes before the polls closed.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

She also dreamed of being a jazz trumpeter, a travel agent, a singer and even for a short period an astronomer.
However, in the end she took a completely different path and aged 17 started training to become a nurse.
“I didn’t realise then that I wanted to live many lives, to experience different ways of living… [Nursing is about] stepping into other shoes all the time,” she says.
The 20 years she spent nursing form the backbone of The Language Of Kindness, a touching and thought-provoking memoir that makes an impassioned plea for the appreciation of the nursing profession in a society where “the act of caring is not considered valuable”.
It charts her progress from her early days as a student nurse, when the sight of blood would make her faint, through the years spent at the frontline of the NHS, to the moment when “compassion fatigue” leaves her exhausted and burnt out. She has not worked as a nurse for two years.
“Nursing,” she says, “is a career that demands a chunk of your soul on a daily basis”, an assertion which, upon reading the book, feels like something of an understatement.
One of her early placements is on a paediatrics ward in a hospital in east London.
Her uniform is “neatly pressed”, her belt buckle “shining”. “I am ready,” she says, full of first-day enthusiasm.
She is in for a rude awakening. “Within two weeks I have scabies, impetigo and nits.
“I’ve been bitten by a child and had to have a hepatitis booster and I have had an ‘eye washout’ after a baby who was having a nappy change had explosive diarrhoea all over my face.”
It is not only the physical aspects of the profession that prove arduous. The emotional toll of nursing is a theme she returns to time after time.
Watson spent much of her career working with sick children and her memoir is full of heart-rending stories about families struggling to cope in the most difficult of circumstances and the vital role nurses play in supporting them.
Nurses are there, she believes, to bridge the gap between doctor and patient, providing the support and care that is as essential as the diagnosis.
“The best nursing comes from the heart and not from the head… A doctor can explain the science. But a nurse knows that the language of science is not enough,” she says.
Watson’s debut novel Tiny Sunbirds Far Away won the Costa First Novel Award and she is an elegant, eloquent writer who brings an immediacy to her work.
You are right there beside her all the way as she provides a fascinating insight into the trials and triumphs of life in an NHS hospital.
It is not always an easy read and nor should it be but the chapter on the care crisis that faces our ageing population is particularly bleak.
“Dying is not always the worst thing. Living a long life and suffering cruelty in old age is the terrible fate that awaits many of us,” she says.
For Watson the key to good nursing – and to life generally – is to treat everyone you meet with “kindness, empathy, compassion and dignity”.
“Nursing is – or should be – an indiscriminate act of caring… and empathy. It should be a reminder of our capacity to love one another.”
It is, in short, a rallying call for kindness and compassion that every one of us should embrace.
On Thursday, Saskatchewan nurses will vote on proposed bylaw changes that would allow them to prescribe opioid substitution therapies, like methadone.

Call The Midwife got a little racy when the nurses visited a ‘strip club’
But the first episode of the new series went all chocolate bourbon and Pulp Fiction on us: we visited a “strip club”.
From what I could see, this ill-lit but well-heated premises offered a constant stream of attractive ladies who could only afford to dress in their underwear – “in the coldest winter for 300 years” – thus provoking the attentions of the opposite sex.
Most shockingly, some men even appeared rather interested.
The focus of the episode fell on one of the female operatives in the club who turned up for her regular lunchtime (“for beginners”) performance in, as her helpful madame explained, a “winceyette nightie and a quilted house coat”.

Trixie managed to complete a tricky breech birth on a dancer
The first episode of the new series went all chocolate bourbon and Pulp Fiction on us: we visited a “strip club”
OK, we’re really interested now. Alas, this outfit was conceived to disguise the fact that she was with child but without the traditional home set-up. That’s the really shocking bit – or “Heavens to Murgatroyd!” as one of the midwives would say later.
She was also exclaiming at the general air of crisis seeping into Nonnatus House, normally a centre of terrifying calm.
Not only was the winter proving to be cold (shock), an old German lady was dying while her house was under threat of being knocked down, people were moaning about the number of foreign workers and there were power cuts.
It was all resolved impressively, within the hour, although the dear German lady did die after all. They can’t perform miracles you know.
Trixie (Helen George) did also manage to complete a tricky breech birth on our “dancer” without a bead of sweat appearing on her brow and with a full face of make-up pleasingly intact. That’s real class.
She has undoubtedly brought some much-needed glamour to that AA meeting.
But, as ever, my favourite will remain the indomitable Sister Monica who is fighting off dementia with enormous courage and determination.
Faced with a shortage of nurses, she boomed: “Our numbers are unconscionably depleted!”
God bless her – and feel free to put in a call to Jeremy Hunt. But just mind how you go using any East End rhyming slang.
James Norton in McMafia (BBC1, Sunday) continues to act superbly. He is now very good at looking transfixed while peering into a screen of numbers.
The tension also rises considerably when his “secret”, second mobile phone rings. When this happens at home, his flaky fiancée can appear very distressed.
Last week’s episode was in danger of getting exciting for five minutes or so.
Alex Godman’s (Norton) associate, Mr Kleiman from Tel Aviv, was framed for raping a young man. Improbably, Godman flew off there immediately to sort it out.
He did a splendid job – until the apparent victim’s real boyfriend was shot in cold blood.

Disappointingly, it was the only execution-style shooting in the episode.
Godman is no better now than the uncle he is apparently avenging. I don’t believe that side of his character for a moment.
Or perhaps, in episode eight, we will see him walking slowly into the Serious Fraud Office with a large manilla folder full of really interesting numbers.
He will spill the sheets across an investigating officer’s desk and we will all cheer…
As we did when Ant and Dec picked up another host of gongs at the National Television Awards (ITV, Tuesday).
They present the best (word used advisedly) reality show, I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! and make Britain’s Got Talent the most watchable talent show on TV.
When the boys are finally bought up by moneybags streaming channel Netflix, in a bid the size of Germany’s GDP, ITV will have to fly the white flag over its Southbank headquarters. No one could replace them.
The NTAs are a bizarre selection of gongs in an event that is a 150-minute showcase of ITV shows.
Why doesn’t the BBC do its own popular awards for TV? Might as well.

Ant & Dec picked up numerous awards at the National Television Awards on Tuesday
Audiences love watching clips of television programmes. They will even watch “ordinary” people talking about clips of television shows on Gogglebox, which picked up another award for the least obvious format for a TV show ever.
The low point of the evening was not the prospect of Piers Morgan hosting (he would actually be better than Dermot O’Leary) but the “Comedy” section, for which only three nominations could be found.
The first was the now limp Big Bang Theory, which is not even British in case they hadn’t noticed.
Then it was Still Open All Hours, which has protected “Last Of The Summer Wine status”, while the winner was the excellent Car Share from Peter Kay.
The state of our comedy is laughable but with all the money going into drama, the prospect of a second series of Amanda Holden’s Big Top is more likely.
The best moment of the evening was undoubtedly hearing the extraordinary story of the underwater photographer who was filming Blue Planet II when he was almost dragged to his death by a humpback whale.
Apparently someone on Gogglebox said, “Wow, that’s extraordinary,” when they saw it.
ONE in four of the nation’s nurses is obese, a new study suggests.![]()
This rises to almost half when considering nurses aged 45 and over, researchers found.
Experts said the figures were “deeply worrying”.
Meanwhile, one in three unregistered care workers – such as care home workers and nursing assistants – was found to have a Body Mass Index (BMI) score which classed them as obese.
Researchers from London South Bank University and Edinburgh Napier University set out to assess obesity prevalence among healthcare professionals working in England.
The study, published in the journal BMJ Open, saw them examine data from more than 20,000 working-age adults who took part in the Health Survey for England between 2008 and 2012.
Participants were split into four groups: nurses, other healthcare professionals – including doctors, dentists and physiotherapists, unregistered care workers and people employed in non health-related jobs.
Of the 422 nurses polled, 25.1 per cent were obese, with a BMI score of more than 30.
Among those aged 45 and over the figure rose to 47.1%.
Meanwhile, 31 per cent of 736 unregistered healthcare workers were obese, as were 14.4 per cent of other healthcare professionals.
Among the 18,500 people from the general population surveyed, the rate of obesity was found to be 23.5 per cent.
The authors cautioned that the high rates of obesity among nurses and unregistered care workers were “concerning” because it increases the risk of musculoskeletal conditions and mental health conditions – some of the main causes of sickness absence in the health service.
Co author Dr Richard Kyle, from Edinburgh Napier University, said: “Obesity is a global pandemic and healthcare professionals are at the heart of efforts to bring down high levels of obesity among the population.
“That one in four nurses in England have been found to be obese is deeply worrying, not least because we know that obesity is linked to diseases such as cancer, cardio-vascular disease, and diabetes.
“It is vital that we redouble our efforts to take care of our healthcare workforce who do so much to care for others.”
Professor Jane Wills, from London South Bank University, and co-author of the paper, said: “The high prevalence of obesity among the healthcare workforce should urge policymakers and employers to provide solutions through workplace initiatives that support staff to maintain a healthy body weight.”
Kim Sunley, a senior employment relations officer at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), said: “There is no doubt obesity is a major public health issue, and we know nurses sometimes struggle to make healthy choices due to long hours, shift work and stress.
“In response, the RCN has worked with partner organisations to develop the Nursing You resource.
“This helps nurses recognise triggers for unhealthy decisions and make better food choices.
“This is the latest addition to the RCN’s Healthy Workplace, Healthy You initiative, which aims to improve nurses’ health by working with employers to improve conditions and promote self-care.”

ATLANTA (AP) — Two nurses lost their licenses after a television station persuaded courts to unseal a video secretly recorded by the family of a man who died in their care.
The video shows the World War II veteran repeatedly calling for help, saying he can’t breathe. It also shows the nurses failing to take life-saving measures and laughing as they try to start an oxygen machine.
The family of 89-year-old James Dempsey of Woodstock, Georgia, sued the Northeast Atlanta Health and Rehabilitation Center in 2014.
Dempsey’s family declined to comment, citing a settlement with the nursing home, the station said.
A statement from the center says care has improved since then, under different leadership.
But WXIA-TV said the nurses didn’t surrender their licenses until this September, after it sent The Georgia Board of Nursing a link to the video the nursing home fought three years to keep secret.
The nurses included a nursing supervisor who told attorneys that, when she learned Dempsey had stopped breathing, she rushed to his room and took over CPR, keeping it up until paramedics arrived. The video shows that nobody was doing CPR when she arrived, and she did not start immediately.
After being shown the video, she told the attorneys it was an honest mistake, based on her normal actions, the station reported.
WXIA said records showed continued problems, including $ 813,000 in Medicare fines since 2015. It said the nursing home got a good inspection report in May, but still has Medicare’s lowest score, a one-star rating.
