An official Vatican publication has exposed the widespread economic exploitation of nuns for cheap or free labor by the Catholic Church’s male hierarchy. It called for an immediate end to the servitude.

‘The (nearly) free work of the nuns’ was published in the March edition of Women Church World – the monthly magazine on women distributed alongside the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano. The article includes accounts from several nuns, using pseudonyms, on their experiences working for free or little money in the Catholic Church.

One nun called Sister Maria, for the purpose of the article, said several nuns work long hours in the homes of bishops and cardinals, cleaning and cooking, and are not invited to share meals at the same table. “They are deeply frustrated but they are afraid to speak because behind everything there can be very complex stories,” Sister Maria explained.

Another nun using the pseudonym Sister Paule said that in many cases the sisters do not have contracts with the parishes they work with so they earn little or nothing.”It is an injustice that also occurs in Italy, not only in distant lands,” she said.

The economic exploitation poses practical problems for nuns and their communities who worry about looking after ill sisters and carrying out their mission with no funds. However, according to the sisters interviewed, the lack of recognition is the greatest issue.

Male vocations are valued, while the work of women is not, they say, highlighting the inequality inside the church. The nuns claimed that sisters with PhDs in subjects such as theology had been sent to do domestic work, with no explanation.

“Behind all this, there is unfortunately still the idea that the woman is worth less than the man. Clericalism kills the Church,” says Sister Paule.

“My sisters and I live very poorly and we do not aim at wealth, but only to live simply in decent and just conditions. It is a question of survival for our communities,” another nun, identified as Sister Cécile, said.

In its Friday edition, L’Osservatore Romano published a preface written by the pope for a Spanish-language book on women. In it, he voices his concerns over society’s chauvinistic mentality and admits the Church is no exception. “I am concerned that in the church itself, the role of service to which every Christian is called, often, in the case of women, slides into roles of servitude rather than service.”

Pope Francis has previously called for nuns to be treated with greater respect and in 2016 commissioned a study on the possibility of ordaining female deacons. The pope said at the time that should someone “ask you to do something that is more of servitude than service, you are courageous to say no!… Your vocation is for service, service to the church … but not of servitude.”

Unlike his predecessors, Pope Francis lives in a Vatican guest house and is catered for by paid waiters. Pope Benedict, who resigned in 2013, was looked after by about eight female members of a lay Catholic organization known as Memores Domini while the late Pope John Paul, who reigned from 1978 to 2005, had a team of five Polish nuns who ran his household.

Gone To Pot: Viewers in hysterics as 'Pat Butcher' smokes a spliff with nuns 'TV Gold!' https://briefnews.eu/gone-to-pot-viewers-in-hysterics-as-pat-butcher-smokes-a-spliff-with-nuns-tv-gold/ https://briefnews.eu/gone-to-pot-viewers-in-hysterics-as-pat-butcher-smokes-a-spliff-with-nuns-tv-gold/#respond Tue, 14 Nov 2017 04:46:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gone-to-pot-viewers-in-hysterics-as-pat-butcher-smokes-a-spliff-with-nuns-tv-gold/

The new ITV documentary sees a bunch of celebrities including Pam, Loose Women’s Linda Robson, former darts player Bobby George and ex-footballer John Fashanu, travel the United States to explore the legalisation of marijuana.

And during the first episode, they visited the Sisters of the Valley who grow their own cannabis plants mainly to produce cannabis medicine but they also use it for recreational use.

Pam, 75, – who played Pat Butcher in the BBC One soap – was the first person to accept a cannabis cigarette off of nuns, with many calling the scene “TV gold”.

After the experience, the actress said: “That first puff with the nuns after a few minutes you get a relaxed feeling.”

Bobby, 71, found the situation surreal as he told the camera: “It was weird to see Pat Butcher, that’s her name ain’t it from EastEnders, smoking a joint.“

Those watching the show found the scene hilarious as many were gobsmacked at the turn of events.

One person wrote on Twitter: “Pat Butcher is about to get stoned with stoner nuns. This is not a drill. #GonetoPot.”

“#GoneToPot is the programme that I didn’t know I needed in my life but it has most definitely made my day,” said another.

A third amused viewer commented: “Never would have thought this programme could work but it had me in stitches. Pat Butcher smoking a joint with a group of nuns absolute tv gold #GoneToPot

While another added: “Pat Butcher smoking a spliff with a group of nuns is quite possibly the funniest thing I’ve seen on TV this year #GoneToPot.”

Gone to Pot continues Wednesday at 9pm on ITV.

‘The Little Hours’ Review: Nuns Go Wild in One of 2017’s Funniest Films [LAFF] https://briefnews.eu/the-little-hours-review-nuns-go-wild-in-one-of-2017s-funniest-films-laff/ https://briefnews.eu/the-little-hours-review-nuns-go-wild-in-one-of-2017s-funniest-films-laff/#respond Fri, 23 Jun 2017 14:11:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-little-hours-review-nuns-go-wild-in-one-of-2017s-funniest-films-laff/ The Little Hours review

The Little Hours is based on one of the tales found in The Decameron, a collection of 14th century novellas from Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio. But even if, like me, you’d never heard of that author before (let alone read his work), all you really need to know about this film is that it features a cast of hilarious people doing filthy, hysterical things. The trailer prominently features a quote from the Catholic League that refers to the movie as “pure trash” – but there’s an important distinction that needs to be made there. It may be trashy, but it’s definitely not trash. The Little Hours is one of the funniest films of 2017.

In the year 1347, a European convent loses its gardener when he quits after being constantly harassed by Sister Alessandra (Alison Brie), Sister Fernanda (Aubrey Plaza), and Sister Genevra (Kate Micucci), a few of the nuns who live there. Meanwhile, a virile young man named Massetto (Dave Franco) works as a servant to the flamboyantly dressed Lord Bruno (Nick Offerman) in a nearby castle. While the paranoid Bruno hilariously and drily drones on about a potential Florentine conspiracy (this is some peak Offerman, folks), Massetto screws Bruno’s wife on the side. Bruno inevitably finds out about his wife’s infidelity, and Massetto makes a run from the castle to avoid getting killed. And hey, a gardener job at a convent just opened up – how convenient!

The priest who runs the joint, Father Tommasso (John C. Reilly), hires Massetto under one very specific condition that I won’t spoil, but it’s partially to prevent the nuns from tormenting him as they did the previous gardener. But it turns out they torment him in an entirely different way: they’re super repressed and super horny, and all three of them separately want to get it on with the hot young stud.

Writer/director Jeff Baena (Life After Beth, Joshy) doesn’t even bother attempting period-appropriate dialogue or having his actors adopt accents; his characters speak like modern people, causing a dissonance between setting and dialogue that takes a second to get used to but eventually just makes everything even funnier. Fred Armisen has a ton of great lines in a small role as a bishop, but he receives his biggest laugh simply by showing up on screen for the first time looking ridiculous, with a goofy grin on his face. The film’s downside is that Baena’s script sort of sputters to an ending, but what came before is so funny, it hardly matters.

At its core, The Little Hours is about desire and how hiding under the guise of religion doesn’t quell those  desires, but might inflate them further. It addresses the all-too-common hypocrisy of churchgoers (the most “pious” families often aren’t nearly as clean as they appear on the surface) and clergy alike, but fittingly, the film is ultimately more concerned with telling a funny story than preaching to its audience about its messages. For all its revelry, swearing, nudity, and witch rituals, there truly is a beating heart at this movie’s center, and the way it treats it wraps up its character arcs is surprisingly tender and sweet. But this is a comedy first and foremost, and a wildly successful one at that: The Little Hours is uproariously funny and will easily go down as one of the funniest movies of the year.

Christine Meeusen, who goes by the name Sister Kate, grew up going to a private Catholic school and was taught by nuns. The sense of sisterhood and honorable work appealed to her.

But these days, Sister Kate, 58, answers to a different, higher calling.

Sister Kate is a self-proclaimed nun, though not of the Catholic order, and the founder of a medical cannabis company that operates out of her home in California’s Central Valley. Her mission is to erase the negative stigma around the plant and create jobs for women who believe in its healing powers. In 2016, Sisters of the Valley generated roughly $ 750,000 in sales.

“No matter what we read about cannabis in the last 20 years, we didn’t listen to it,” Sister Kate told Business Insider last year. “Because we knew we were dealing with a healing plant. We knew, intuitively, without having the science [to back us], that it was being demonized.”

Business Insider visited the Sisters of the Valley in March 2016. Take a look inside the most pot-friendly abbey in America.

In a California ranch house, the seven members of the Sisters of the Valley wear white blouses, long denim skirts, and habits made from old pillowcases.

They might look the part, but the Sisters of the Valley are hardly the convent types.

The sisters make a line of salves, tinctures, and oils derived from hemp, a type of cannabis plant that contains only trace amounts of the psychoactive ingredient in weed.

‘The Keepers’ Trailer: Netflix Explores a Nun’s Murder in Its Latest True Crime Series https://briefnews.eu/the-keepers-trailer-netflix-explores-a-nuns-murder-in-its-latest-true-crime-series/ https://briefnews.eu/the-keepers-trailer-netflix-explores-a-nuns-murder-in-its-latest-true-crime-series/#respond Wed, 19 Apr 2017 23:24:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-keepers-trailer-netflix-explores-a-nuns-murder-in-its-latest-true-crime-series/ The Keepers Netflix

With the rise of NPR’s popular Serial podcast, HBO’s riveting limited series The Jinx, and Netflix’s wildly addictive Making a Murderer over the span of a couple of years, the true crime genre had never been hotter. It’s cooled down a bit since 2015, but it seems like the public will always be intrigued by a murder mystery, and if a story is framed in the right way, it can still become an outright sensation.

That’s clearly what Netflix is hoping for with The Keepers, the streaming service’s new seven-part docuseries about the unsolved murder of a Baltimore nun and the potential cover-up that’s been going on for nearly fifty years.

The Keepers trailer

I know there’s still an audience out there for true crime shows like this, but does anyone else feel that the genre is beginning to fall in a bit of a rut? All of these series are starting to look the same to me, and it’s only in extraordinarily rare cases like The Jinx where there’s actually a satisfying conclusion at the end of the tunnel.

Still, I’ll admit that The Keepers looks fascinating; its allegations of corruption and a cover-up that may have lasted almost half a century help it stand out from its contemporaries. And corruption within the Catholic church is likely something that’s still relatively fresh on the minds of many cinephiles in the wake of Spotlight’s Best Picture win not too long ago.

Netflix seems to be leaning into the true crime genre pretty hard with this, Casting JonBenet, and an impending second season of Making a Murder on the way. Since they don’t release viewer numbers, we won’t know exactly how many people tune in to those shows, but Netflix wouldn’t be continuing to churn them out if the company’s algorithm didn’t indicate a significant portion of its audience would be curious enough to check it out. Are you one of them?

All seven episodes of The Keepers arrive on Netflix on May 19, 2017.

Directed by Ryan White (Serena, The Case Against 8), The Keepers will have everyone asking the question “who killed Sister Cathy?” The series was produced by Film 45 and Tripod Media for Netflix. Along with White and Jessica Hargrave, Josh Braun, Ben Cotner, Jason Spingarn-Koff and Lisa Nishimura are executive producers.
Through interviews with dozens of friends, relatives, journalists, government officials and Baltimore citizens determined to uncover the truth, White pieces together a story that goes beyond the death of a beloved Catholic schoolteacher to encompass clergy abuse, repressed memories and government and religious institutions that he says “at best, dropped the ball over the last 45 years – and, at worst, covered it up.”

‘The Little Hours’ Trailer: Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza & Kate Micucci Are Dirty, Horny Nuns https://briefnews.eu/the-little-hours-trailer-alison-brie-aubrey-plaza-kate-micucci-are-dirty-horny-nuns/ https://briefnews.eu/the-little-hours-trailer-alison-brie-aubrey-plaza-kate-micucci-are-dirty-horny-nuns/#respond Wed, 19 Apr 2017 08:29:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-little-hours-trailer-alison-brie-aubrey-plaza-kate-micucci-are-dirty-horny-nuns/ The Little Hours Trailer

Last year, director Martin Scorsese brought us Silence, a pensive, harrowing story of 17th-century Portuguese missionaries, who embark on a perilous journey to Japan to find their missing mentor and struggle with the decision of renouncing their faith or suffering an agonizing death. This year, director Jeff Baena brings us a trio of raunchy, horny nuns who just want to fuck the new servant at their convent.

The Little Hours follows Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza and Kate Micucci as three nuns who are anything but holy. I’ll just leave it at that, because the red band trailer does a much better job of showing you just how wild these sisters can get. Watch red band The Little Hours trailer below. Yes, this is NSFW because of ample dirty language and even some nudity.

This looks positively ridiculous, almost like Monty Python and the Holy Grail by way of David Gordon Green (though the filmmaker who tried that with Your Highness has nothing to do with this production), and I love everything I’m seeing here. An especially nice touch among the critical acclaim from the Sundance Film Festival is a nice quote from The Catholic League saying, “It is trash. Pure trash.” Though pure trash sounds like a contradiction in terms, you couldn’t ask for a more ringing endorsement for a movie like this.

In addition to our three nuns, the supporting cast includes Dave Franco as the new servant Massetto, John C. Reilly as Father Tommasso, Nick Offerman as Lord Bruno, Fred Armisen as a bishop, Molly Shannon as Mother Superior, and supporting roles filled out by Jemima Kirke, Paul Reiser, Adam Pally and more. That’s a great array of comedic talent to upset the establishment, if you ask me.

Medieval nuns Alessandra (Alison Brie), Fernanda (Aubrey Plaza), and Ginevra (Kate Micucci) lead a simple life in their convent. Their days are spent chafing at monastic routine, spying on one another, and berating the estate’s day laborer. After a particularly vicious insult session drives the peasant away, Father Tommasso (John C. Reilly) brings on new hired hand Massetto (Dave Franco), a virile young servant forced into hiding by his angry lord. Introduced to the sisters as a deaf-mute to discourage temptation, Massetto struggles to maintain his cover as the repressed nunnery erupts in a whirlwind of pansexual horniness, substance abuse, and wicked revelry.

The Little Hours gets a limited release on June 30 and will expand in the following weeks.
