A study from Wood Mackenzie found that some wells in the Permian Wolfcamp were suffering from decline rates at or above 15 percent after five years, much higher than the 5 to 10 percent originally anticipated. “If you were expecting a well to hit the normal 6 or 8 percent after five years, and you start seeing a 12 percent decline, this becomes more of a reserves issue than an economics issue,” said R.T. Dukes, a director at industry consultant Wood Mackenzie Ltd., according to Bloomberg. As a result, “you have to grow activity year over year, or it gets harder and harder to offset declines.”

Moreover, shale wells fizzle out much faster than major offshore oil fields, which is significant because the boom in shale drilling over the past few years means that there is more depletion in absolute terms than ever before. A slowdown in drilling will mean that depletion starts to become a serious problem.

A separate study from Goldman Sachs takes a deep look at whether or not the shale industry is starting to see the effects of age. The investment bank says the average life span for “the most transformative areas of global oil supply” is between 7 and 15 years.

Examples of these rapid growth periods include the USSR in the 1960s-1970s, Mexico and the North Sea in the late 1970s-1980s, Venezuela’s heavy oil production in the 1990s, Brazil in the early 2000s, and US shale and Canada’s oil sands in the 2010s. Each had their period in the limelight, but ultimately many of them plateaued and entered an extended period of decline, though some suffering steeper declines than others.

US shale is entering the lower end of this range at about 7 years. While shale is still growing, there are some signs that the “Shale Tail,” which Goldman says is “the phase when shale becomes a less meaningful driver of global oil supply,” may not be that far off.

Goldman lays out the five signals to watch out for, which would indicate that the glory days of shale are over. Although Goldman says the real trouble may be a few years off, there is some evidence that some of those dynamics are beginning to occur. The investment bank offers a breakdown as follows:

1. When inventory is being revised down, not up. This is already occurring in some areas, such as the Eagle Ford. Goldman notes that EOG Resources’ inventory fell in the Eagle Ford in the second quarter, with the company having drilled more wells than it added in new areas.

2. When well productivity stops improving. This one is inconclusive although perhaps it is beginning to become a concern. Goldman notes that the industry posed explosive productivity gains in 2017, but those gains slowed this year. Decline rates have accelerated in the Eagle Ford and Delaware Basin, but in the aggregate, there may still be some room for improvement for a little while.

3. When supply cost rises for structural reasons. Costs have climbed recently, but largely because of cyclical reasons, Goldman argues. High rates of drilling have created bottlenecks and pushed up costs, but those would come down if the cycle soured. It is still early for this metric.

4. When capital shifts to other regions. This looks the least threatening of the five warning signs. US shale remains a top priority and the oil majors have stepped up their spending in shale, pivoting out of other regions. Spending on non-OPEC non-shale crashed post-2014 and hasn’t recovered. There has been some shifting of capital within shale plays – such as from the Permian to the Eagle Ford and the Bakken – but this is mostly due to pipeline constraints.

5. When growth is no longer impactful/meaningful (lagging indicator). Goldman Sachs still sees US shale adding 1 million bpd+ at least through 2020. This indicator won’t become clear until the production gains actually start slowing down.

The investment bank says that shale-focused companies are still a solid bet through the early 2020s, and it singles out companies like Concho Resources or Pioneer Natural Resources, two large Permian drillers. But by 2025, shale E&Ps will begin to see their stars fade.

At that point, Goldman warns investors to pivot out of shale pure-play companies and focus either on diversified companies that have assets outside of shale, or on the integrated oil majors. “[W]e believe future resource additions outside shale deemed low on the cost curve will likely be positively received by investors,” Goldman stated, citing Hess Corp. as a company that might fit this description because of the huge oil fields it is developing with ExxonMobil in offshore Guyana.

Put another way, depletion will become “a greater theme” in the future, so companies that are sitting on assets that deplete quickly will fall out of favor. Those that can stave off declines will fare much better.

The investment bank still expects US shale to add around 1 million barrels per day each year through 2021 at least. But with early signs of strain, limits on productivity and steeper decline rates, it is clear that the industry’s glory days are numbered.

  • A former top North Korean official believes North Korea will not agree to a US request for a “complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization.”
  • Thae Yong Ho, North Korea’s former deputy ambassador to the UK, said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will not loosen his grip on nuclear weapons.
  • The defector said the regime might be looking into tourism projects near coastal areas and eventually seek joint economic projects with South Korea.

An ex-North Korean official suggested that his former country may have a different definition of the term that has been circulating around foreign policy circles ahead of the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un: denuclearization.

Thae Yong Ho, North Korea’s former deputy ambassador to the UK, said he did not believe Kim would agree to a US request of a “complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization” due to likelihood that it would “strike at the core of North Korea’s power structure.”

Bill O’Reilly’s days at Fox News may be numbered https://briefnews.eu/bill-oreillys-days-at-fox-news-may-be-numbered/ https://briefnews.eu/bill-oreillys-days-at-fox-news-may-be-numbered/#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2017 22:00:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bill-oreillys-days-at-fox-news-may-be-numbered/ Bill O'ReillyMark J. Bill O’Reilly may not be returning to Fox News after his vacation, according to a New York Magazine story published Tuesday.

Three sources cited by the publication said Fox News founder Rupert Murdoch was fighting to keep the controversial commentator on, while Murdoch’s sons, James and Lachlan Murdoch appear to be leaning toward booting O’Reilly for good.

James Murdoch is the chief executive of 21st Century Fox. Lachlan Murdoch is a co-chairman at the company.

The latest report comes after a New York Times story earlier this month that said O’Reilly had paid $ 13 million over the course of several years to agree “not pursue litigation or speak about their accusations.”

The exposé was then followed by a week-long exodus of advertisers from O’Reilly’s hit show “The O’Reilly Factor,” and street protests outside of Fox News headquarters — all of the events stemming from a sexual harassment scandal that has disrupted not only O’Reilly’s brand, but the structure of the show.

Having had the highest-rated first quarter in history with an average of almost four million viewers per show, each episode subsequently suffered a massive pull-out from notable advertisers after the allegations came to light. Forcing a dramatic change in the show’s structure, including longer on-air segments and fewer commercial breaks.

“It’s worse than Glenn Beck,” one source said, referring to another advertiser pull-out from Beck’s time slot on Fox News in 2011.

Amid the public outcry and allegations against the controversial television personality, more accusations are still coming to light. Another woman accused O’Reilly of sexual harassment, according to a Hollywood Reporter story published Tuesday. The African-American clerical worker from Fox News alleged that the anchor called her “hot chocolate” in 2008.

If true, the rumors may have been fueled by the Murdochs’ $ 14 billion takeover plans of Sky, a European media company, where a media regulator was assigned to determine whether the Murdochs were “fit and proper” to stake their claim. Having O’Reilly ousted from the network may “appease critics and help close the Sky deal,” New York Magazine’s Gabriel Sherman wrote.

Additionally, Sherman reported that the social culture at Fox News may have played a factor in determining O’Reilly’ future.

“Morale is awful,” said a Fox female executive to the magazine. “There’s been no word from management to calm the masses.”

Nissan makes one of the world’s best engines — but its days could be numbered https://briefnews.eu/nissan-makes-one-of-the-worlds-best-engines-but-its-days-could-be-numbered/ https://briefnews.eu/nissan-makes-one-of-the-worlds-best-engines-but-its-days-could-be-numbered/#respond Sun, 19 Mar 2017 21:50:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nissan-makes-one-of-the-worlds-best-engines-but-its-days-could-be-numbered/ Infiniti QX70 3.7L engineInfiniti

Business Insider’s Transportation team loves engines.

And it’s a great time to be an engine lover, with all manner of powertrains now propelling modern cars and trucks. We’ve driven big American V8s, exotic V10s and W12s, lots of turbocharged four-cylinder powerplants, a fair number of twin-turbocharged supercar engines, and of course a wide range of gas-electric hybrids and full-electric vehicles.

Sometimes, the good old workhorse engine of the auto industry, the venerable V6, has gotten lost in the shuffle.

But at other times, a really stupendous six-banger distinguishes itself.

That’s been happening lately with Nissan’s VQ motor, a six-cylinder masterpiece that’s been around since the mid-1990s and is found throughout the Nissan/Infiniti lineup.

We recently savored this excellent engine in an Infiniti QX70 crossover. This VQ is the 3.7-liter flavor, making a robust 325 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. For my money, 3700 cubic centimeters of displacement is the absolute sweetspot for a traditional V6 motor, with no extras bolted on — no turbos or supercharger, just a straight engine crafted from aluminum, sucking in air, combining it with gasoline, blowing up the mixture, and creating movement. Internal combustion at its finest.

The definitive example of this is the legendary Buick 3800, a V6 that arrived in the early 1960s and earned the awesome-cool “Fireball” nickname.

Infiniti QX70Infiniti

A great V6 is a thing of beauty because it can serve up power and torque without requiring the two extra cylinders of a V8, thereby achieving better fuel economy. The 3.7-liter on the QX70 doesn’t deliver particularly amazing MPGs — 22 highway/16 city/18 combined — but it isn’t awful, and the performance is majestic. This straight-up engine, coupled with a seven-speed transmission, can launch the QX70 from 0-60 mph in six seconds, which is eminently respectable.

The feel of that acceleration is refined rawness, with the power flowing to the wheels in a linear manner. No turbo-lag here, nor late-arriving supercharger punch. You put the pedal down and the thing just goes.

That’s a satisfying sensation, one that a truly good V6 can serve up. A V8 might kick harder, and a turbo four might get you there with buzzier thrills. But the VQ gets in done the old-fashioned way.

Sadly, as good as this engine is, the fuel-economy numbers are going to catch up to at some point. Infiniti already dropped a V8 as a QX70 option, and the trend in the industry is to use turbo fours in place of dated sixes, keeping the V8s for the higher-performance vehicles, and even then, often using turbocharged sixes instead.

But for the time being, engine lovers can enjoy the mighty Nissan VQ, while it’s still around.

Michael Flynn’s days in the Trump administration may be numbered https://briefnews.eu/michael-flynns-days-in-the-trump-administration-may-be-numbered/ https://briefnews.eu/michael-flynns-days-in-the-trump-administration-may-be-numbered/#respond Tue, 14 Feb 2017 03:10:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/michael-flynns-days-in-the-trump-administration-may-be-numbered/ Michael FlynnCarolyn Kaster/AP

New details on National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s correspondence with Russia have emerged, after US officials say the White House was warned late last month that Flynn had misled officials and that he was susceptible to Russian blackmail.

According to The Washington Post, former acting Attorney General Sally Yates, who was fired by President Donald Trump, told the White House that she believed Flynn had misled officials about the extent of his communication with Russia’s ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak.

Yates’ message came at a time when concerns arose after Flynn told Vice President Mike Pence that he denied discussing US sanctions against Russia with Kislyak.

Former Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper and former CIA Director John Brennan both said at the time that “Flynn had put himself in a compromising position,” with Russia and agreed that Pence deserved to know he had been misled, according to officials cited by The Post. It remains unclear what White House counsel Donald McGahn did with that information.

Flynn reportedly apologized on Monday to Pence, saying that he may have discussed the Obama administration’s sanctions with Kislyak before Trump was sworn in. Prior to this, Flynn denied allegations of talks with Kislyak, including one on the day President Barack Obama announced new sanctions on Russia for that country’s attempts to disrupt the US election.

As the evidence of discussions grew, including transcripts of calls, Flynn’s spokesman said that Flynn “indicated that while he had no recollection of discussing sanctions, he couldn’t be certain that the topic never came up.”

The damage may have already been done, however, as The New York Times reports that three administration officials familiar with the situation say that Pence has become incensed at Flynn for witholding information, and embarassing him after making several television appearances in Flynn’s defense.

If the allegations are true, Flynn’s actions would be in contention with the Logan Act, which prohibits US citizens from interfering in foreign diplomacy. However, a case involving the 1799 statute has never been successfully prosecuted.

Earlier Monday, press secretary Sean Spicer said in a statement that the White House was “evaluating the situation” with Flynn. A senior Trump administration official also said that they were aware of the situation and that they were “working on this for weeks.”

Calls for Flynn’s resignation are already being sounded in both sides of the aisle. On Monday, Republican Rep. Mike Coffman of Colorado released the statement: “As national security advisor, Michael Flynn is responsible to the President, Vice President, and the American people. It is his duty to be fully transparent and forthright in his actions — anything less is unacceptable. If in fact he purposely misled the President, he should step down immediately.”
