Taking a break at the historic US-North Korea summit, Donald Trump offered his counterpart Kim Jong-un a rare glimpse inside the American presidential limo commonly known as ‘The Beast.’ The moment was caught on camera.

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un were seen on the grounds of the Capella Resort in Singapore, walking towards the black armored limousine nicknamed ‘The Beast.’ Following a gesture from Trump, a Secret Service agent slowly opened the passenger door.

Kim, smiling broadly, peeked inside before walking away with Trump. It is unclear whether ‘The Beast,’ known for its protective gear, made any impression on the North Korean leader. His own black Mercedes limo was spotted earlier in the streets of Singapore.

Much to the surprise of locals, it was almost entirely surrounded by bodyguards in identical black suits, jogging alongside the vehicle as it arrived at the St. Regis hotel where Kim stayed during the summit.

  • It could take up to 15 years for North Korea to be fully denuclearized, according to one of the leading experts on the rogue state’s nuclear capabilities.
  • This presents a significant obstacle to the Trump administration’s desire to see “rapid denuclearization.”
  • Siegfried Hecker, a nuclear scientist at Stanford University, has issued a report outlining what he and his colleagues feel is a more realistic approach to the denuclearization of North Korea.
  • Hecker’s approach would essentially see the US manage the risks posed by North Korea’s nuclear program while not rushing the rogue state in a way that would make it feel threatened.

  • A former top North Korean official believes North Korea will not agree to a US request for a “complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization.”
  • Thae Yong Ho, North Korea’s former deputy ambassador to the UK, said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will not loosen his grip on nuclear weapons.
  • The defector said the regime might be looking into tourism projects near coastal areas and eventually seek joint economic projects with South Korea.

An ex-North Korean official suggested that his former country may have a different definition of the term that has been circulating around foreign policy circles ahead of the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un: denuclearization.

Thae Yong Ho, North Korea’s former deputy ambassador to the UK, said he did not believe Kim would agree to a US request of a “complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization” due to likelihood that it would “strike at the core of North Korea’s power structure.”

  • North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has unilaterally decided to discuss denuclearization with the US, but seriously pursuing that line could end in his ouster and death.
  • Dictators like Kim run the risk of violent upheavals, as the North Korean people do not have legal recourse or any nonviolent method to change their leadership.
  • Whether or not Kim disarms, when North Korea becomes open for business, newly empowered North Koreans may rise up against the leader that has imprisoned and killed so many for political reasons.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made headlines for his diplomatic offensive, expressing unprecedented openness to talking to the US and exploring denuclearization.

But if Kim is serious about getting rid of his country’s nuclear weapons, and many doubt that he is, he opens himself up to the same fate that’s befallen many US foes and deposed dictators — a fall from power, and potentially his own death.

US ‘not surprised’ by Russia’s new nukes, boasts about own ‘unmatched’ arsenal (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/us-not-surprised-by-russias-new-nukes-boasts-about-own-unmatched-arsenal-video/ https://briefnews.eu/us-not-surprised-by-russias-new-nukes-boasts-about-own-unmatched-arsenal-video/#respond Fri, 02 Mar 2018 07:30:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-not-surprised-by-russias-new-nukes-boasts-about-own-unmatched-arsenal-video/ The US White House and Pentagon have dismissed Russia’s new nuclear arsenal as “no surprise.” American officials took the opportunity to accuse Russia of treaty violations and boast that their arsenal is “second to none.”

“We’ve been watching Russia for a long time. We’re not surprised,” said Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White following Vladimir Putin’s state of the nation address. Putin had unveiled a new Russian strategic arsenal that he said was bound to make Washington stop looking down on Moscow. Russia’s new deterrent, Putin said, is invulnerable to interception.

“America is moving forward to modernize our nuclear arsenal and make sure our capabilities aren’t being matched,” White bragged in response.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders reiterated the theme, pointing to America’s massive military budget, as well as US President Donald Trump’s own nuclear doctrine.

“US defense capabilities are and will remain second to none, and now because of the new defense budget of $ 700 billion our military will be far stronger than ever,” Sanders said. “As the president’s nuclear posture review made clear, America is moving forward to modernize our nuclear arsenal and ensure our capabilities are unmatched.”

She also accused Russia of violating a 1980s missile treaty. “President Putin has confirmed what the United States government has known all along, which Russia has denied: Russia has been developing destabilizing weapons systems for over a decade in direct violations of its treaty obligations,” Sanders said.

At the State Department, spokeswoman Heather Nauert attacked the CGI video simulation played during Putin speech to demonstrate the new missiles’ capabilities. Nauert claimed it depicted an attack on the US, despite there being no depictions of presumed targets or points of impact. When journalists in the briefing room, both Russian and American, pointed out that detail, she deflected their comments.

During his address, Putin said everything Russia is doing to strengthen its defenses is within existing arms control agreements. “I should specifically say that Russia’s growing military strength is not a threat to anyone; we have never had any plans to use this potential for offensive – let alone aggressive – goals.”

Russia’s embassy to the US issued a separate statement, pointing out that the Sarmat missile Putin showcased is within the provisions of the 1982 INF treaty.

President Putin rebuffed accusations by Western media outlets that he was starting a new arms race. That race, he said, was kicked off when the US pulled out of a 30-year anti-ballistic-missile treaty with the Soviet Union and Russia. “If we are to speak of an arms race, then an arms race started precisely at that point,” he told NBC host Megyn Kelly in an interview, referring to a decision taken by George W. Bush in 2002.

Trump’s craving for more nukes a ‘rip off’ that only benefits military industrial complex https://briefnews.eu/trumps-craving-for-more-nukes-a-rip-off-that-only-benefits-military-industrial-complex/ https://briefnews.eu/trumps-craving-for-more-nukes-a-rip-off-that-only-benefits-military-industrial-complex/#respond Sat, 13 Jan 2018 02:40:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trumps-craving-for-more-nukes-a-rip-off-that-only-benefits-military-industrial-complex/ The Trump administration’s blueprint for building more nuclear warheads to contain “strategic competitors” is a “rip-off” that only benefits manufacturers, not the American people, foreign policy analyst Robert Naiman told RT.

The plan to expand the US low-yield nuclear arsenal, outlined in the draft of the upcoming Nuclear Posture Review leaked to the media, is an “outrageous and foolish” idea that will add nothing to US national security, argues Robert Naiman, policy director at Just Foreign Policy and president of the Truth Out organization.

Trump’s new nuke ‘posture’: Draft allows nuclear response to conventional attack & new warheads

“The United States has already more than enough nuclear weapons, and the idea of building more is foolish, dangerous and unnecessary and robbery of other priorities,” Naiman told RT. By channeling money into more nukes, Trump betrays his voters, who expected him to focus on infrastructure projects at home, he added.

“He talked about America First, rebuild America, people thought that meant we’re going to fix the roads and the bridges. Nah, we are going to build more nuclear weapons,” Naiman said.

While the nuclear plan is expected to be unveiled by Trump next month, the rather hawkish draft is still in the works and requires congressional approval, Naiman noted. He hopes lawmakers contest it.

Naiman also hopes other countries will not be “so stupid as to take the bait” and allow themselves to be dragged into an expensive new arms race. The funds that would be funneled into the pockets of arms manufacturers are US taxpayer dollars, stolen “under pretext of defending the US,” he stressed.

“Every billion dollars that are spent on nuclear weapons is a theft from education and healthcare and medical advances and roads – things that people need. Things that people need. We can’t eat nuclear weapons, we can’t educate ourselves with nuclear weapons. It’s a rip off.”

Attempts by the Trump administration to justify the nuclear build-up by claiming Russia and China pose a threat to the US do not hold water as “nobody really thinks that any sane person is going to do nuclear weapons in a strategic competition.”

While Russia and China are indeed “strategic competitors” to the US, the “idea that this means we need to produce more nuclear weapons doesn’t follow at all,” Naiman argued. In terms of nuclear deterrence, according to Naiman, it is not the quantity of nuclear weapons that matters, but the mere fact that the country possesses them.

The analyst believes it will be weapons manufacturers who will be the primary beneficiaries of the shift in nuclear policy, which is “not in the interest of the world” and “not in the interest of the majority of people in the United States.”

“The huge driver of this is the Pentagon industrial complex. Pentagon contractors are going to make money off producing nuclear weapons,” Naiman said, stressing that “parochial interests” of certain military industry players might be behind the overhaul. “We are not going to be more safe if we spend money on weapons that we don’t need.”

Trump’s top national security adviser just said the US is ready to take North Korea’s nukes by force https://briefnews.eu/trumps-top-national-security-adviser-just-said-the-us-is-ready-to-take-north-koreas-nukes-by-force/ https://briefnews.eu/trumps-top-national-security-adviser-just-said-the-us-is-ready-to-take-north-koreas-nukes-by-force/#respond Wed, 20 Dec 2017 16:43:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trumps-top-national-security-adviser-just-said-the-us-is-ready-to-take-north-koreas-nukes-by-force/ Donald Trump H.R. • President Donald Trump’s national security advisor said the US is prepared to make North Korea denuclearize against its will.
  • This would likely require a massive act of warfare, and flies in the face of experts who say North Korea’s missiles are now so advanced that they should deter a US attack.
  • But Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis doubts North Korea’s ICBM, and it looks like the military isn’t ready to be counted out of the North Korean crisis.

H.R. McMaster, President Donald Trump’s national security advisor, just took an incredibly bold stance on North Korea that points to the worst possible outcome — all out war.

Asked by BBC on Tuesday if the US was committed to a peaceful resolution to the North Korean crisis, McMaster abandoned the usual formality of political speech.

“We’re not committed to a peaceful resolution,” McMaster said. “We’re committed to a resolution.”

“We want the resolution to be peaceful, but as the president has said, all options are on the table,” said McMaster. “We have to be prepared if necessary to compel the denuclearization of North Korea without the cooperation of that regime.”

Denuclearization by force equals a massive war, no way around it

Of the seven possible courses of action on the North Korean crisis prepared for Congress by its internal think tank, denuclearization of the country by force is one of the harshest, most dangerous possible courses of action.

In separate comments to PBS News Hour on Monday, McMaster reaffirmed his belief that the chance of war with North Korea is growing every day, and added that “we have a very short amount of time to be able to address the problem.”

At the same time, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis dished out another revelation from the country’s top national security minds.

North Korea can not yet hit the US with a nuclear weapon, according to Mattis. Despite experts calculating that North Korea’s latest ICBM could hit any part of the US with a 1000 kilogram nuclear device, Mattis said the US remains doubtful the missile works as advertised.

Essentially, the missile can probably lob a heavy nuclear warhead as far as the US, but its ability to evade missile defenses and to function properly once it gets there isn’t a sure thing.

Is the US headed for war?

Vigilant Ace 18 US/South Korea Air ForcesAssociated Press

Taken together, the comments from the US’s top military advisers and officials paint a picture of a US that still sees a slim window to use force against North Korea.

For decades, as North Korea’s nuclear might has grown, US and South Korean leaders have been deterred by Pyongyang’s massive offensive output.

But today, as North Korea perfects its missile program to the point where it can nearly hold targets in the US at risk of nuclear annihilation, the world’s greatest military seems like they won’t allow a set of calculations on paper to tell them their strength is no good here.

  • The US and South Korea reportedly trained to ‘infiltrate’ North Korea and remove its weapons of mass destruction.
  • If war broke out between the US, its allies, and North Korea, this would be a vital early step.
  • Video shows US troops participating in the drill, which followed an exercise where stealth aircraft ran simulated bomb runs on North Korean targets.

The US and South Korean militaries carried out a training exercise focused on “infiltrating North Korea and removing weapons of mass destruction in case of conflict,” military sources told Yonhap News.

Lt. Col. Christopher B. Logan, a spokesman for the US military in South Korea, told Business Insider that the US military doesn’t “discuss specific scenarios,” but that “exercises are vital to the readiness of the US and our allies, and ensure we are ready and trained for combined-joint operations.”

Online video of the exercise, called Warrior Strike, shows US troops training in protective gear and in urban environments, much as they might if they had to fight through a situation where nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons had been used.

The training, which took place on December 15, followed up a week-long air drill that involved an unprecedented number of stealth aircraft carrying out simulated bomb runs on North Korean targets.

If war broke out between the US, South Korea, and North Korea, a key task early in the conflict would be seizing control of, or destroying, Pyongyang’s weapons of mass destruction.

Though its arsenal remains secretive, experts suspect North Korea possesses chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons. North Korea has frequently threatened nuclear attacks on South Korea and the US, and demonstrated nuclear devices six times.

At the moment, China and Russia accuse the US of escalating tensions with North Korea as it increases its military drills, while the US pushes the world to implement strict sanctions on Pyongyang and refuses to accept the nation’s illegally forged nuclear status.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has called the country’s nuclear weapons “a powerful deterrent” from US “nuclear threats” for itself and the whole world. The statement came as President Trump once again dismissed the idea of talks with Pyongyang.

“The nuclear weapons of the DPRK are a precious fruition borne by its people’s bloody struggle for defending the destiny and sovereignty of the country from the protracted nuclear threats of the U.S. imperialists. And they are a powerful deterrent firmly safeguarding the peace and security in the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia,” Kim Jong-un said at a Central Committee session on Saturday, as cited by North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Addressing what he called a “complicated international situation,” Kim said that nuclear weapons guarantee North Korea’s sovereignty and “rights to existence,” calling them “a treasured sword of justice to remove the nuclear clouds of tyranny bringing a horrible disaster to mankind and make it possible for the people to lead an independent and happy life under the clear and blue sky.”

Pyongyang refuses to give up its nuclear program, despite punitive sanctions imposed by the UN, the latest round of which follows North Korea’s sixth nuclear test in early September. The sanctions are “last-ditch efforts to completely stifle the sovereignty and the rights to existence and development” of North Korea, according to Kim, who said the country should keep “simultaneously pushing forward the economic construction and the building of nuclear force.”

At around the same time as Kim Jong-un’s address, US President Donald Trump commented that any negotiations with Pyongyang would be pointless, tweeting that 25 years of diplomatic approaches to North Korea’s nuclear ambitions have not yielded any results.

He went on to say that “only one thing will work,” but did not elaborate.
