Nuisance calls are hugely irritating but there is a way to stop them

When my 11-year-old was given a smartphone at Christmas there was plenty that concerned me.

Blocking inappropriate websites, deleting social media apps and setting parental controls were all top of my list before being allowed to roam free with this exciting new gadget.

However, there was one thing I was totally unprepared for and that was the nightmare of nuisance calls.

Getting cold called is something most adults have to deal with on an almost weekly basis but I was shocked by how quickly these unsolicited calls started on a phone given to a child.

What made this even more baffling is the phone and SIM were brand new and the number had only been given to a few very close friends and family.

But somehow, within days of the smartphone being activated, this number was in the hands of call centres across the UK with them brazenly attempting to sell life insurance, PPI  and accident compensation to a minor.

On one particular day we had to fend off four separate calls plus a scam text message posing as a popular supermarket.

So how can this happen?

Having spoken to my mobile network they guarantee that no numbers are ever given out to marketing or cold call companies.

However, as there simply aren’t an infinite amount of telephone numbers, some are often recycled meaning call centres may already have it on record.

Unscrupulous firms also use automated number generators that bombard networks in the hope they find a phone that’s switched on and in service.

It’s shocking to think it’s this easy for a new number to become so readily available in such a short amount of time and even worse that children can be contacted without any fear of firm’s being held accountable.

Sadly, it seems my experience is just the tip of the iceberg.

Recent figures show that over two billion unwanted calls and texts arrived on phones in the UK last year.

So what can you do about it?

Luckily, it seems there is a fairly simple way to deal with unwanted calls.

The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service that allows you to opt out of receiving unsolicited calls.

Once your number is registered with the TPS it is then illegal for companies to cold call you unless they have your consent to do so.

You can register with the TPS here.

Will this stop all calls?

The honest answer appears to be no.

The TPS says that there’s been a rise in the number of unsolicited calls being received by people registered on the service. 

These calls mainly come from companies that deliberately ignore the law and either hide or disguise their identity. 

They might withhold the number they are calling from or display a fake number. 

And they sometimes use generic sounding names that cannot be used to accurately identify an organisation.

Understandably this makes contacting these companies or targeting them for enforcement extremely difficult or even impossible.

There are thousands of calls every day from companies like these trying to benefit from short term financial opportunities based on generating sales leads for things such as accident claims, PPI claims, solar energy installation, and insulation grants etc.

There is one more thing you can do

The TPS has recently launched an app which aims to fight the issue of cold calling.

This TPS Protect app can monitor calls and tell you if they are coming from fake number.

Users can then opt to block the calls and report the company for making contact illegally.

The TPS says: “We take the data we collect from you and provide a service that warns you if an incoming call is a suspected scammer, or from someone that is causing a nuisance. 

“There is even the option to just send all the unwanted calls straight to voicemail so that you are not disturbed.”

What to do if you continue get nuisance calls?

but the advice is simple.

Never give any personal details to anyone who you don’t know even if they claim to be from a reputable company.

Avoid answering the phone by saying your telephone number and name as a greeting and avoid including these details on your answerphone or voicemail.

Try and get the name of the company and person on the other end of the phone.

If they are real and abiding by the law they should have no problems giving this to you.

You can also ask the caller to remove your name from their database which means you shouldn’t be contacted again.

Floyd Mayweather has vowed to “go to” Conor McGregor in their August 26 bout and fight an offensive fight, but many are skeptical.

Mayweather traditionally fights a defensive battle, using his patented shoulder rolls and defensive tactics to avoid big punches and win by points.

The style is not without its critics. Many people think that Mayweather’s style can be dull to watch and that he should attack other fighters more rather than just avoiding them.

This was a complaint many had after his blockbuster fight with Manny Pacquiao in 2015 failed to live up to its billing. Many expect him to do the same against McGregor, an ill-suited opponent who really only stands a chance of beating McGregor if he can land a couple big shots.

It’s not a new complaint, however. In 2007, after Mayweather defeated Oscar De La Hoya, then the biggest opponent of his career, in a 2-1 decision, De La Hoya voiced the same complaint (via the Washington Post).

“I landed the harder, crisper punches,” De La Hoya said at the time. “I felt when I landed my punches I could see I was hurting him. If I hadn’t pressed the fight, there would be no fight.”

Likewise, after that fight, even Mayweather’s father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., said he thought De La Hoya should have won.

“I thought Oscar won the fight on points, threw more punches and was more aggressive. My son had good defense and caught a lot of his punches, but I still thought Oscar pressed enough to win the fight.”

Eight years later, Pacquiao said something similar after losing to Mayweather.

“I thought I won the fight,” Pacquiao said, adding, “He didn’t do nothing.” Pacquiao at one point referred to Mayweather as “running” from him.

Of course, some don’t see Mayweather’s style as an issue. Sam Girard, a Mayweather opponent from 1998 who quit boxing shortly after being knocked out in two rounds, told Business Insider that not getting hit is the name of the game.

“That’s the name of the game. You ain’t supposed to get hit, you’re not supposed to let guys hit you,” Girard said, while acknowledging that Mayweather does evade opponents a bit. “The name of the game is hit and not get it. And he does it real well.”

Time will tell if Mayweather will stick to his word and truly go after McGregor. But if he reverts back to his defensive style, don’t be surprised if McGregor, hardly a shy fighter, to also voice his disgust with it.

Notorious nuisance call offenders will be blacklisted by the firm and these calls with be automatically diverted to a junk voicemail box to prevent BT’s customers from dealing with the irritating callers.

Up to 15 million calls will be blocked a week by the service, according to BT’s data.

The service will come as godsend to people sick of answering the phone to callers looking to sell them something they don’t want.

As well as BT automatically diverting calls from main offenders, BT customers can simply and easily block numbers, which will be added to the company’s data base if enough people block them and become automatically blocked for all users.

You can report numbers by dialing 1572 after hanging up on the latest irritating caller.

Kelly from BT Consumer told Which: “It could see 30m nuisance calls per week automatically diverted to a junk voicemail box, before they can be answered.

“Customers will be able to compile their own personal blacklist by adding individual unwanted numbers. They do this by dialling 1572 after receiving the call or by going online.

“If large numbers of customers identify troublesome numbers they wish to divert, these will be added to the wider BT blacklist.”

Esther Rantzen recently issued a warning to elderly Brits over nuisance callers.

Appearing on Sky News, Esther Rantzen revealed how to avoid being caught out by menace phone calls.

Esther, who works with TalkTalk, said: “If you receive a call that you aren’t sure about, there is a way to ensure you are speaking to a genuine company.

“Talk to the person on the other end of the phone – be perfectly polite.

“Then hang-up, go and make a cup of tea, and call whoever they say they are back.

“Don’t call the number they have given you, but find their company number independently – Google it or look them up in the phonebook.

“This is to make sure you are using the right number, as if it was a scam company who called you, they can make it look as if they are anyone, calling from anywhere.

The elderly are more vulnerable to nuisance callers as they are most likely to answer their landlines and least likely to have caller-ID installed.
