***** Old Baggage by Lissa Evans (Doubleday, £14.99) It is 1928 and former suffragette Mattie lives in Hampstead with her friend, Florrie Lee, known as The Flea. Mattie is 58, unmarried, writes a column for the Hampstead & Highgate Express and gives lectures on her days of political campaigning to halls of disengaged audiences. She interferes unashamedly in other people’s business and is forthright, fearless and unconventional – when her handbag is stolen she hurls a miniature bottle of whiskey at the thief. Then Mattie bumps into an old friend and former suffragette who is now, with her husband, running a fascist-leaning organisation for young people. It makes Mattie realise she misses her campaigning days, so she sets up a feminist group for teenage girls who meet on the Heath for exercise, debate and political education. We meet a rich and varied cast of characters across the social divide as Mattie endeavours to educate and empower her attendees. Mattie is a vibrant, formidable creation, beautifully drawn and fully realised by Lissa Evans. Headstrong and yet subtly vulnerable, she is a woman who, like so many of her generation, is clever and sharp yet lacks an outlet for her talents. The novel is joyously funny and the author has a fine eye for the comedic in everyday life. But there is also much poignancy and social commentary. Old Baggage is a gloriously entertaining and deeply moving novel about what courageous women do when society does not afford them a role and how one’s purpose in life can be found in the most unexpected places. Hannah Beckerman **** Love & Ruin by Paula McLain (Fleet, £14.99) Paula McLain has a rare gift for bringing history alive. The Paris Wife transported us to the champagne sparkle of the French capital at the height of its irresistible jazz-age glamour as she charted the whirlwind romance of Ernest Hemingway and Hadley Richardson. Paula McLain confidently blends meticulously researched fact with fiction once more in Love & Ruin, taking up the story of Hemingway as he encounters the fiercely independent Martha Gellhorn. This novel’s sweep is much broader as their stormy, tragic relationship plays out around a warring world, stretching from the ruined streets of Madrid during the Spanish Civil War to the opium dens of Hong Kong and the blood-soaked Omaha Beach at the time of the Normandy landings. Recounting true events seen through the eyes of real people, including Ingrid Bergman and Eleanor Roosevelt, the novel never loses sight of the tangled emotional lives of Hemingway and the ambitious Gellhorn. Both were talented writers and flawed individuals with a swashbuckling hunger for experience and an appetite for danger that seemed to make them a perfect match. Gellhorn was at the beginning of her lengthy career as a distinguished war reporter and novelist when she met the author, a married man and father of three. The novel captures the electric intensity of their attraction and her struggle to avoid becoming lost in the long shadows of Hemingway’s fame and volatile personality. It often feels like a losing battle. Fast paced and compelling, this is a novel that screams out to be filmed, the bantering insolent dialogue and the sparring partner protagonists reminiscent of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in the film of To Have And Have Not. A complex heartbreaker of a love story that makes for an enthralling read. Allan Hunter **** House Of Gold by Natasha Solomons (Hutchinson, £12.99) Greta is unhappy. She is a member of the Jewish Goldbaum clan, an international banking dynasty whose wealth, influence and power extends across Europe. So her family has very definite ideas on whom she should wed – and they choose a fellow Goldbaum she has never met. Greta, rebellious, impulsive and strong-minded, is aghast at the prospect of marrying boring Albert whose “manners were as meticulous as his person”. She tries “to imagine what it must be like to be an ordinary person and not a Goldbaum, and to be able to choose: a woman free to select her own husband; a man free to decide his own vocation”. Greta’s brother Otto is similarly restricted, expected to become a banker when he longs to be an astronomer. Natasha Solomons brilliantly sets the scene. The Goldbaums live a gilded life but a caged and claustrophobic one too. It is a far cry from the world of Karl, a sewer rat who searches the tunnel beneath the Goldbaums’ Viennese mansion for lost or discarded coins, bones and assorted rubbish to sell. His life will become entwined with Otto’s as the world heads inexorably towards war. The author follows Greta as she attempts to work out how to navigate her marriage. It is a tricky task. Greta is impassioned and emotional whereas Albert, a collector of butterflies and beetles, has very precise ideas about the role of women in relationships. Greta, on the advice of her mother-in-law, turns her attention to plants and begins to build “a garden of defiance” – wild, unruly and unregimented, a haven from emotional upheaval as war and loss make their mark on the family. House Of Gold is a compelling read and full of lavish detail but undercut by the realities of war and what it means to be Jewish in an anti-Semitic world. Eithne Farry

In 2013, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling released a book called The Cuckoo’s Calling under the pseudonym “Robert Galbraith.” It was the first in a series of crime novels following the adventures of a private investigator named Cormoran Strike, a former member of the Royal Military Police, and now Cinemax has adapted the first three novels into a miniseries. Watch the first C.B. Strike trailer below.
The first book sees Cormoran Strike (what a name) teaming up with a female partner and investigating the apparent suicide of a model, and the show doesn’t appear to do much to differentiate itself from its contemporaries like Sherlock and Luther. But with procedurals like this, it’s often not as much about the plots as spending time with the characters, so we’ll see how well the idea is executed when it comes to the small screen Stateside this summer.
All of the episodes have already played in the U.K. on BBC One last summer, and at the time, The Telegraph compared one of its episodes to the works of Agatha Christie and another to True Detective and David Fincher’s Seven.
If you’re interested in checking it out, the first episode debuts on Friday, June 1, 2018 on Cinemax. New episodes will follow each Friday; the show kicks off with three one-hour episodes that cover the first book in the trilogy, and the remaining two books – The Silkworm and Career of Evil – will be covered in two episodes each, bringing the total number of miniseries episodes to seven. But there’s always the opportunity for more, since Rowling reportedly wants to write at least ten more books in the series. Lead actors Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger have said they’re interested in returning, but they’ll wait for Rowling to publish another book before reprising their roles again.
Here’s the official breakdown:
C.B. STRIKE is based on the bestselling crime novels written by Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. Starring Tom Burke (“Only God Forgives”) and Holliday Grainger (“The Borgias”), the story centers on Strike, a war veteran turned private detective, operating out of a tiny office in London’s Denmark Street. Although wounded both physically and psychologically, Strike’s unique insight and his background as a military police investigator prove crucial in solving three complex cases that have baffled the police.
C.B. STRIKE is a CINEMAX Miniseries presentation in association with BBC; a Bronte Film and Television production; “The Cuckoo’s Calling” executive produced by Ben Richards, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and J.K. Rowling; “Career of Evil” and “The Silkworm” executive produced by Tom Edge, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and J.K. Rowling.

Neil Gaiman is stepping up his TV game. The author has been gradually making his way over to the small screen, first executive producing the Starz adaptation of his magnum opus novel, American Gods, then taking on the role of showrunner for the BBC adaptation of Good Omens. Now, he will be teaming up with Akiva Goldsman to develop a TV adaptation of fantasy novels that he had no part in writing.
Gaiman and Goldman will be adapting the Gormenghast TV series, based off of Mervyn Peake’s acclaimed fantasy series.
The Tracking Board reports that Gaiman and Goldman will be collaborating with FremantleMedia North America to develop a Ghormenghast TV series.
Mervyn Peake’s fantasy series, which follows the inhabitants of the decaying gothic Castle Gormenghast, has been called a literary classic on par with J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series, its more-famous contemporary. Originally conceived as a single novel, Peake would write three novels Titus Groan (1946), Gormenghast (1950), Titus Alone (1959) and a novella, Boy in Darkness (1956), before his death in 1968.
The series is rife with political intrigue, following a slew of “characters including Titus, the heir to the throne of the House of Groan, scheming kitchen boy Steerpike and twin sisters Cora and Clarice,” according to The Tracking Board.
Gaiman said in a statement accompanying the announcement:
“There is nothing in literature like Mervyn Peake’s remarkable Gormenghast novels. They were crafted by a master, who was also an artist, and they take us to an ancient castle as big as a city, with heroes and villains and people larger than life that are impossible to forget. There is a reason why there were two trilogies that lovers of the fantasy genre embraced in the Sixties: Lord of the Rings, and theGormenghast books. It’s an honor to have been given the opportunity to help shepherd Peake’s brilliant and singular vision to the screen.”
Gormenghast has been adapted for the small screen before. The first two books of Peake’s series, Titus Groan and Gormenghast, were adapted in 2000 by the BBC as a four-part miniseries starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Christopher Lee. The trailer is quite…something.
The series sounds highly ambitious and weird — a perfect combination for the king of ambitious and weird, Neil Gaiman. We have yet to see Gaiman’s talents behind the camera in Good Omens, but it sounds like Gormenghast will test his storytelling and TV producing skills.
However, it’s unclear what part Gaiman will play with the series in the long run, as FremantleMedia is currently meeting with potential showrunners. Barry Spikings (The Deer Hunter) will also executive produce, along with David Stern (Howards End). Akiva Goldman is the wild card here, as he does have his Oscar win for A Beautiful Mind under his belt, but has produced a string of flops, including A Winter’s Tale and The Dark Tower. But I could see Gaiman as the creative muscle in this team, while Goldman works his Hollywood connections. I’m not sure yet if it’s a match made in heaven, but consider me intrigued by this weird, high-concept premise.

Starz’s royal court is getting rather full: The premium cabler has greenlit The Spanish Princess, a limited series based on two Philippa Gregory novels, TVLine has learned.
It’s been almost seven years since the last book in the fantasy author’s Game of Thrones series was released.
While Martin hopes The Winds of Winter will come out this year, there’s still A Dream of Spring to go to complete A Song of Ice and Fire as a series.
Presumably with the recent big gaps in publication, the fact that the final two novels will be 1500+ pages and his hectic schedule with other books and projects, it’s unlikely the series will be finished until at least the mid-2020s – when Martin is in his late 70s.
Now one fan has written a frustrated opinion piece for Forbes arguing the author might not even get around to finish it.
They said: “I think it’s reasonable to begin burying our expectations.”
Taking into account a delay until the middle of the next decade, the concerned fan pointed out: “Martin is no spring chicken at 69.
“It’s reasonable to worry that he might not be able to finish at this rate and equally reasonable to suspect he doesn’t much care.”
With such a long-writing process, Martin has previously been angered when fans were concerned he might die before finishing the series like fellow fantasy author Robert Jordan.
Jordan died in 2007, so his 14-volume Wheel of Time series, which started in 1984, had to be finished by Brandon Sanderson in 2013 after three more novels.
The Winds of Winter is estimated to be released in 2018 or 2019.
Rankin, 57, who has written 25 novels, 21 featuring the detective John Rebus, said growing numbers of terror attacks and mass shootings, were leading people to crave “kind and gentle” books.
He also said the Trump presidency could spark a change in reading habits.
Rankin, from Fife, said: “Fiction must be credible. The real world right now feels to me like the opposite of that.
“People crave normality and stories of kind people helping each other.”
And he predicted “a move away from serial killers and bleak dystopian crime fiction”.
He added: “Maybe good will be seen to triumph and ordinary people will overcome crises in psychological crime novels.”
But Joseph Knobbs, crime fiction buyer at Waterstones, disagreed.
He said: “No doubt some readers will go looking for that comfort book but as…The Jinx, Serial and Making A Murderer suggest, people are still enraptured by tales of crime and punishment.”
Rankin told the Hong Kong Literary Festival he was too set in his ways and too much of a cynic to give up on Rebus.
He said: “Maybe my books will become wilder and more chaotic instead.”

It may seem silly to talk about a movie’s sequel before the first one is even in theaters, but Andy Muschietti‘s adaptation of It demands the conversation. Stephen King‘s massive novel was divided in half for the film adaptation and the scenes that take place 30 years after the “Losers’ Club” battle Pennywise the Clown (and its various other guises) were excised. But they weren’t forgotten. Even when we visited the set, the filmmakers were already talking about their plans for the sequel.
And with It finally hitting theaters on Friday, Muschietti is saying even more. Specifically, that some of the book’s deranged, cosmic weirdness could take center stage in the follow-up.
The early buzz suggests that It is a very good movie, but also that it strips down some of the novel’s more outrageous and bizarre elements (some of which won’t be missed, to be completely honest). However, speaking with Yahoo Movies, Muschietti revealed that some of the wilder and “transdimensional” elements could surface in a sequel:
I really wanted to focus on the emotional journey of the group of kids. Getting in to that other dimension — the other side — was something that we could introduce in the second part. In the book the perspective of the writing… is always with the Losers, so everything they know about Pennywise is very speculative and shrouded in absurdity, so I wanted to respect that mystery feeling of not knowing what’s on the other side.
Muschietti’s answer could be coming from an honest place (he made it clear in our interview that he prefers the kid portion of the book to the adult storyline), but it could also be read as “the studio wouldn’t let us get too weird with this one.” If it’s the latter, the film being a box office hit could give him the sway (and the budget) to pull off the book’s trippier sequences.
Without going into spoilers, the final stretch of It is a psychedelic trip into a hellscape full of inter-dimensional creatures, ancient beings, and threats that can drive characters insane with a single glance. It’s like Uncle Stevie gave H.P. Lovecraft a few snorts from his private stash. As the book makes abundantly clear, Pennywise the Clown isn’t Its true form – it’s just Its favorite form. It’s a shapeshifting being with cosmic origins that are difficult to talk about here. I’m still note entirely sure what the hell goes down in the final 100 pages of It. I’ll just let Mr. Muschietti deal with that.
It opens this Friday.
