Arike Ogunbowale’s jumper from the corner with a second left lifted Notre Dame to a 91-89 overtime victory over UConn on Friday night in the national semifinals.

She finished with 27 points and Jackie Young had a career-high 32 to lead the Irish back to the championship game for the first time since 2015.

“I know I just had to shoot it at the last minute,” Ogunbowale said. “I didn’t want to give them a chance to get the ball. I went into Mamba mentality. Kobe’s here, so that’s what I tried to channel.”

It’s the second consecutive year an undefeated UConn team lost in the Final Four on a last-second shot in overtime. Last time it was Mississippi State and Morgan William, ending the Huskies’ 111-game win streak.

UConn was down five with under a minute to go in regulation before Napheesa Collier hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left and Kia Nurse had a steal for a layup a few seconds later to tie it. After Notre Dame turned it over with 3.6 seconds left in regulation, Gabby Williams’ runner was short, sending the game to overtime.

Nurse, from Hamilton, Ont., finished with 10 points.

The Irish will face the Bulldogs — who won again in OT earlier Friday — on Sunday night in the title game. Muffet McGraw’s squad will be looking for its second national championship to go with the one the Irish won in 2001.

Ogunbowale had a chance to seal the game in the final minute of overtime, but she missed two free throws. Crystal Dangerfield then hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 89, setting up the fantastic finish. The Huskies threw the ball down the court after the 3, but didn’t get a chance to tie it.

“We were a little dejected at the end of regulation, but Arike I think was madder than anyone,” McGraw said. “She wanted the ball in her hands and we put it there for the end of the game.”

This was the latest chapter in the greatest current rivalry in women’s basketball. The sellout crowd that included Lakers great Kobe Bryant, who was sitting behind the Huskies bench with his wife and daughters, saw quite the show with epic comebacks from both teams.

The teams traded shot for shot in overtime before the Irish led 86-84 with 2:37 left in the extra period. Young then made three free throws over the next 2 minutes to give the Irish a five-point lead with 43 seconds left.

Collier then scored to make it a three-point game. Ogunbowale missed her two free throws a few seconds later. She atoned 37 seconds after a Notre Dame timeout with the shot that set off a wild celebration from the Irish faithful that made the trip.

“I practise this all the time,” Ogunbowale said. “It’s everyone’s dream to get a game-winning shot, so you practice this in the gym when you’re by yourself. So I was prepared for this moment.”

This might be one of the most improbable NCAA runs by McGraw’s team, despite being a No. 1 seed. The Irish lost four players over the course of the season to ACL injuries. With only seven healthy scholarship players left, the Irish rallied from second-half deficits in the last three NCAA games.

Just like their regular-season meeting, Notre Dame started out hot. The Huskies trailed 24-11 late in the first quarter before Katie Lou Samuelson hit a 3-pointer just before the end of the period. That began a 28-6 run over the next 9 minutes to give the Huskies a 39-30 advantage. Azura Stevens had 10 points during the run as UConn took over, much to the delight of the sellout crowd of nearly 20,000 fans.

The Huskies (36-1) led 41-34 at the half before Notre Dame rallied. The teams traded the lead in the third quarter before the Huskies went up 60-57 heading into the fourth quarter.

Collier finished with 24 points for the Huskies. Stevens added 19.

Video footage has emerged of the recent attack near Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, showing a hammer-wielding man attacking police and officers responding with gunshots.

The attack took place in a crowded area in front of the cathedral in the French capital on Tuesday.

The footage, recorded by a surveillance camera, shows a man charging at police officers and hitting one of them with a hammer.

Officers then are seen immediately responding and opening fire on the attacker.

The assailant reportedly shouted “this is for Syria,” French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said following the incident.

A 22-year-old police officer was slightly injured in the attack and taken to hospital, Collomb added.

Collomb later said that the man was an Algerian student and appeared to have acted alone.

The assailant was identified as Algerian-born Farid Ikken, a PhD student of communications, who also had two kitchen knives in his possession, French media reported.

Paris Notre Dame hammer ATTACK: Is it safe in France's capital city for tourists? https://briefnews.eu/paris-notre-dame-hammer-attack-is-it-safe-in-frances-capital-city-for-tourists/ https://briefnews.eu/paris-notre-dame-hammer-attack-is-it-safe-in-frances-capital-city-for-tourists/#respond Tue, 06 Jun 2017 16:14:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/paris-notre-dame-hammer-attack-is-it-safe-in-frances-capital-city-for-tourists/

It is being reported an attack has taken place in Paris outside the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, France.

A man has allegedly attacked a police offer with a hammer and has since been shot by the police – although reports say the attacker was not killed.

The policeman, Sky News reports, has been taken to hospital with injuries but is believed to be alive. Paris Police’s SGP Unit confirmed one of their officers was “slightly wounded in the head by a hammer blow”.

The FCO explained there were “reports of an incident” at Notre Dame cathedral in Paris; the area has been sealed off.

It warns Britons in Paris that they should avoid the immediate area of the incident and follow any local police instructions.

Due to ongoing threats to France by Islamist terrorist groups the French government has warned the public to be especially vigilant and has reinforced its security measures.

Tourists inside the cathedral are being told to stay put and reportedly are in ‘lock down’, although authorities are saying the situation is now over and the attacker has been neutralised.

Police have sealed off the area and told people to stay away from the scene. The prosecutors office has said the French counter-terrorism office is to open an investigation into the incident.

A British tourist inside the cathedral spoke to Sky News saying there are a “couple of thousand” people locked inside because there was a “police incident” outside and no-one was to leave until it was safe to leave.

Gunshots have been heard by the eyewitness, who is sitting in the aisle at the world-famous landmark.

Ticia Verveer tweeted: “900 people confined in Notre-Dame after attack on police at the cathedral square #Paris #NotreDame.” Police told everybody in the cathedral to raise their arms to show they were not armed.

The US Embassy in France has informed US citizens that a security incident has occurred at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

It reads: “US citizens should avoid the area and follow advice of French authorities.

“US citizens are encouraged to monitor media and local information sources and factor updated information into personal travel plans and activities. Citizens may wish to download the Government of France smartphone application, SAIP, that will alert users to terrorist attacks or other exceptional events.”

Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in France

FCO travel information

Neil Sanchez, a witness at the scene, told LBC: “We heard the two shots ring out, and then all of a sudden people were screaming all around us and running away from the scene.”

The streets surrounding Notre Dame have been cleared by police.

It comes just days after the attack in London where seven were killed. The reported attack raises concerns regarding the safety of the French capital.

The UK gov.uk website states that terrorists are “very likely” to try to carry out attacks in France – although this attack has not been named as a terrorist incident.

The terror threat has been at the same level since the Paris attacks last year.

It also states the French government has extended the national state of emergency until 15 July 2017.

Travellers are warned to be vigilant at all times especially when in tourist areas.

The high number of attacks in France over the recent years has raised concerns regarding the safety of the country.

In 2015, terrorist attacks killed over 130 people across the centre of Paris.

Another terrorist attack in 2016 also took place in France after 84 people were killed after a truck drove through Nice.

It follows on from the recent knife attack inside the Louvre earlier this year which injured a French soldier.

After widespread rioting spilled into central Paris earlier this year – in February – Frank Brehany, of Holiday Travel Watch, told Express.co.uk: “Whilst the world experiences turmoil, we still have to get on with our daily lives and where possible take trips away.

“I am a regular visitor to Paris and I am struck by the visible security at ports and public spaces and whilst these may not deliver complete security, it does nonetheless offer a sense of vigilance which has to be backed up by holidaymakers following the authorities instructions and always reporting their suspicions.”

Travel implications for tourists

Flights and trains remain unaffected to and from the country.

There are no new reports of any cancellations or restrictions as of yet.

Frank Brehany, Consumer Director of HolidayTravelWatch, told Express.co.uk: “It is clear that the Paris Police responded with speed and the matter was resolved quickly. Tourism is important to France, as with any country, but the French State are clearly doing everything they obviously can in the towns and cities across France to protect their citizens and tourists.

“I would also recommend downloading the SAIP app, offered by the French government, which provides the latest advices, tailored to the exact location you are staying.”

Terrorism abroad remains a threat to British travellers, due to the attacks targeting westerners. Britons are warned to follow any media reports from within the country, as well as to stay aware during public holidays and any open spaces that attract foreign tourists.

Brits abroad are also warned to always keep their mobile phone on with them to be able to alert the emergency services, as it is advised to run and hide rather than to surrender or attempt to negotiate with the terrorists.

The US recently issued a terror alert for its citizens who are travelling to the UK, France or Sweden light of the attacks.

Notre Dame's Best Player Won't Shake the Memory of His Late Teammate https://briefnews.eu/notre-dames-best-player-wont-shake-the-memory-of-his-late-teammate/ https://briefnews.eu/notre-dames-best-player-wont-shake-the-memory-of-his-late-teammate/#respond Mon, 06 Mar 2017 05:29:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/notre-dames-best-player-wont-shake-the-memory-of-his-late-teammate/ V.J. Beachem hears the critical radio calls. He reads the mean tweets. He’s not aggressive enough, they say. He’s afraid to take the big shot. Luckily for Notre Dame, their key to a potential March Madness run is adept at blocking out the noise.

“I listen to a lot of Frank Ocean, man. I like to keep it stress-free before the games.”

Boasting NBA-level athleticism and premier shooting ability, Beachem is far and away Notre Dame’s most gifted player. But the 6-foot-8-inch senior’s time in South Bend has been marred by inconsistent play. This year, though, particularly in the second half of the season, 22-year-old Beachem has caught fire. Though he still turns in occasional single-digit disappearing acts, his outside shot is enough to put any defense on high alert. At 23-8, Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish rank second in the ACC, with Beachem scoring 15.4 points a game. He recently surpassed 1,000 career points. Things look good for the Irish. But Notre Dame’s postseason hopes, and Beachem’s NBA aspirations, hinge on which version of the still-inconsistent sharpshooter appears in March.

The mixed performance has tamed an ego that might otherwise be soaring on a star in the making. When asked to explain his dismal two-point outing in a January 4 win over Louisville, Notre Dame’s captain seems proud of his teammates for pulling through when the Cardinals shut him down. “Whether I score two or 25 points, if we win, it’s fine with me,” he tells OZY. It’s not the voice of a ball hog. But, ironically, the team may be looking for him to lead a little bit tougher. “We need him to be an aggressive scorer for us,” Coach Mike Brey said in a preseason press release. “He needs to hunt his stuff.”

Beachem grew up in New Haven, Indiana, a stone’s throw from Fort Wayne. His lanky frame and silky jump shot stood out in one of the state’s most fertile talent grounds. Like millions of Hoosiers before him, the only child learned the game via one-on-one training sessions in the driveway with his father. Victor Beachem, a factory worker in Fort Wayne, taught his boy proper shooting technique, hesitation dribbles and smooth midrange up-and-unders. He still works his son out every chance he gets, usually during the summer.

By the time he reached high school, Beachem was a known commodity on the recruiting scene. It was widely assumed that Indiana would snag the four-star recruit. He finished his prep career as a two-time All-State selection and the 2013 Fort Wayne News Sentinel Player of the Year. Joining him on those two All-State teams was his best friend, future Irish teammate and current Boston Celtics point guard Demetrius Jackson. The opportunity to play alongside Jackson played a pivotal role in helping Brey sign his wing scorer of the future.

Beachem was far from NBA-ready when he arrived in South Bend. He came off the bench in his first two years, providing scoring depth behind two future NBAers — Chicago Bulls point guard Jerian Grant and Portland Trail Blazers shooting guard Pat Connaughton. Last year, following their departure, Beachem took over a starting role and has held it ever since. He led his team to a second consecutive Elite Eight, averaging 17.5 points in the tournament. NBA scouts salivated. With Brey’s blessing, Beachem declared for the 2016 NBA Draft.

Luckily for Irish fans, Beachem chose to return to school after not receiving a first-round draft projection. But he walked straight into tragedy: On May 11, eight days after withdrawing from the draft, Beachem organized an evening pickup session with some former high school teammates. One of the regulars in attendance was his close friend Steve McElvene, a 7-foot center who had just finished a promising sophomore season at Dayton. “Big Steve was playing so well,” Beachem tells OZY. “We talked about how much potential he had and how he was going to be the next big name out of Fort Wayne.”

The next morning, hours after leaving the gym with his friend, McElvene was found dead of a previously undiagnosed cardiac issue. Losing his friend forced Beachem to reconsider his daily approach, both on and off the court, and to mature emotionally. He says that McElvene’s smile and love of life are what he has most tried to emulate. “You never know when God’s going to decide that it’s your time to join Him,” Beachem tells OZY. “I’ve got to represent for Steve now.” One way to do that, he says, is by “leading my team.”

One can already see the fruits of his work. Beachem’s defense has improved markedly since his early days with the Irish. He’s become a strong wing defender, shot-blocker and, most importantly, a top scorer. Notre Dame’s equal-opportunity offense focuses on ball movement and finding the open man. The emergence of point guard Matt Farrell and All-America candidate Bonzie Colson has taken some weight off of Beachem’s shoulders. But, as Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports’ College Basketball Insider notes, there’s still cause for concern. While Beachem has been great down the stretch, Rothstein says that he “doesn’t play well if he doesn’t start the game heavily involved.” Because of that, Brey typically runs some designed plays for Beachem early in the game. “I can be more aggressive,” Beachem admits. “But fans have to understand our offense and our flow. We don’t force anything through one guy.”

Balance is certainly important, but when it matters most, every team needs one scorer who can be counted on to will his squad to victory. For past Irish teams, Grant, Ben Hansbrough, and Luke Harangody were the guys. National champions turned NBA stars Kemba Walker (UConn) and Carmelo Anthony (Syracuse) have proven how far one clutch scorer can take a team in March. The Irish are praying that Beachem can shoot them into the final game.
