Thomas Ulsrud and his Norwegian squad bolted into the curling fashion limelight at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver by wearing their splashy, patterned pants. For years they garnered a lot of attention at every bonspiel for them.

Norway second Christoffer Svae was the one behind his team's trademark eye-catching attire. The Norwegians were preparing for the Games when a miscommunication left them with less-than-desirable uniforms.

Svae took charge and ordered the first wave of flashy pants that became the team's signature look.

"We were going to practice with them but never play in them," Svae said. "But the last day of practice before the Olympics we were talking to some other Norwegian athletes from snowboarding and they said we should wear them."

The rest is history.

But if you assumed it was about to catch on in curling, think again. In a lot of ways, curling is reserved for the traditional — stepping outside of that familiar vibe is often frowned upon.

"Our sport is so conservative and singular. Why do we need to follow that mould when there are so many people in the sport who aren't that way?" Colin Hodgson said.

"We're pigeon-holing people into acting and looking a certain way and suppressing the flair that could exist in the sport."

Going out on a limb

Hodgson is the lead for Team Carruthers out of Manitoba. He's best-known for his funky hairstyles, something he started years ago after watching the Brad Pitt movie Fury.

"I still get some looks sometimes but growing up I've realized I'm not happy when I care about what those people say," Hodgson said. "Leads don't get that much attention so I have to find a way to stand out. I'm living in the shadow of Reid and Mike [McEwen]."

Hodgson wants to change the way people view curling through what the players are wearing. That's why a few years ago he started his own apparel company called Dynasty Curling with business partner Faron Asham.

"One of the first jerseys we did was something crazy, the Viking uniform for Edin. This was five years ago. That just changed it all. They wanted to go out on a limb. We saw how popular it was immediately and our company exploded because of it," Hodgson said.

There were four teams who took a chance on Hodgson's company early on. Teams skipped by Edin, Chelsea Carey, Kerri Einarson and Val Sweeting all signed up to be the first to wear Dynasty Curling uniforms.

"They kind of took a chance on us. My own team wasn't even using my apparel because we had a previous sponsorship," says Hodgson.

Now he is the official clothier of more than 1,000 rinks from 25 different countries, including the team of former NFL players skipped by Jared Allen.

"They're wearing our apparel. I got that call in the middle of the summer this year and had to keep it quiet until they announced they would be curling and wearing them," Hodgson said.

It's been a wild fashion curling journey for Hodgson who just secured the contract for Curling Canada events over the next four years. He hopes to push the limits when it comes to traditional looks in the traditional game.

"It's going away from the boring and conservative to bright and vibrant. It's going along with the movement," he said.

White belts and Technicolor trousers

One of the first teams to really shake things up was Team Howard when they introduced white belts to their wardrobe. At the time, it was something Glenn Howard says just wasn't the norm.

"I'm still wearing it," Howard said, laughing. "I think it was Richie Hart back in the day who came up with that when Craig, Brent and I played together."

Howard said they were always wearing white belts golfing and thought they could do it on the ice too. But it wasn't always met with a positive response.

"We kind of got the hairy eyeball for a while but if you see the junior curlers are all wearing them, I love the way the game is going."

This week in North Battleford, Rylan Kleiter's Saskatchewan rink had psychedelic pants — similar to some of the Norwegians' finest. They were also met with some side-eyes at times.

Howard, who has been around the game longer than most on the ice, says he wants to see more of it.

"It spices up our game. I think it's great. We're all wearing black pants. Brad Gushue is wearing blue. McEwen had the red pair years ago. "I love the fact the there are new pants coming out."

A small Norwegian town on a remote archipelago near the North Pole, where polar bears outnumber residents, has been shaken by the first-ever bank robbery in its living memory.

On Friday morning, a 29-year-old Russian tourist visited a bank in the town of Longyearbyen on Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. He threatened bank personnel with a Mauser riffle and demanded 70,000 Kroner ($ 8,000), the Svalbard Governor’s office said.

Locals and tourists are allowed to carry weapons on the island due to a huge number of polar bears (over 3,000), whose population surpasses the residents’ community of 2,000.

However, the unlucky robber couldn’t get away with his crime and quickly got arrested.

The criminal probably didn’t take into account that almost everyone in the town knows each other. He also apparently failed to work out potential escape routes – a local airport is the only means of leaving the settlement during the polar night.

The Russian was transported to the town of Tromso on the Norwegian mainland, where he will be questioned. The governor admitted that the remote Arctic archipelago is no longer free from crime.

The bizarre heist was ridiculed online, with people wondering how on Earth the robber had planned to get away.

Low-cost carrier Norwegian just sweetened our summer plans with some new budget-friendly flights to Europe. The airline on Tuesday said it will add two more nonstop routes for summer 2019 out of Boston’s Logan International to Rome and to Madrid.

Norwegian will also be moving its existing London service from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to Miami International Airport, and its London service from Oakland International Airport will move to San Francisco International Airport.

Bochkarev travelled to Norway to take part in an international seminar held in the Norwegian parliament on September 20-21. The man, who works in the Central Office of the Russian Senate, was invited to the event by the European Center for Parliamentary Research and Documentation, the ministry’s statement says, adding that the event was public and was attended by “parliamentary representatives from a dozen countries.”

“It is incomprehensible why the presence of a Russian representative at the seminar has led to such provocation,” the ministry said, adding that a “wave of spy hysteria” that has recently engulfed the West had taken a particularly “despicable form” in Norway. It also said that Oslo’s move would not be “left unanswered.”

Norway then rushed to explain that the arrest of the Russian man accused of “gathering some data” has nothing to do with politics and is treated as a criminal case. “This is not a political issue,” Prime Minister Erna Solberg told the Norwegian NTB news agency.

Several western countries have, indeed, gone on an apparent spy hunt, with mainstream media at times dominated by headlines on alleged “Russian agents.” Swiss and Dutch newspapers reported mid-September that the two countries carried out a joint operation with the UK, resulting in the Netherlands expelling two suspected Russian spies in March. This was later confirmed by Switzerland’s intelligence agency, which claimed it had foiled “a Russian plot,” targeting a Swiss laboratory which tests nerve agents such as Novichok.

The details provided by the western media and officials were so scant that it prompted the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to call on them to “present some facts” first, so that Moscow could respond to these allegations.

Meanwhile, the British authorities tirelessly accuse Moscow of being behind the poisoning of the former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter. Most recently, London presented the CCTV footage of two men it claimed were agents of the Russian military intelligence, the GRU, and accused the two of poisoning the Skripals.

The men, identified as Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, gave an interview to RT’s editor-in-chief, Margarita Simonyan, where they said they claimed to be businessmen and tourists that got wrongly accused by the UK. Their explanation, however, appeared to be not convincing enough for London, which immediately rushed to denounce it as a blow to the “public’s intelligence.”

Meanwhile, across the pond, the US authorities are still looking for proof of Russia’s alleged interference in the US 2016 elections but have failed to find any so far. As part of the Russiagate scandal sweeping the US, a Russian gun rights activist, Maria Butina, got arrested. Butina, who has been accused of being an unregistered Russian lobbyist and basically a Russian agent, has been kept in prison for more than two months without any solid evidence of her guilt being presented.

Norwegian Palestine-solidarity activist Kristin Foss was shot twice in a week by Israeli soldiers. The first time she was shot whilst standing with her hands raised, and the second occured when she was retreating from tear gas.

Foss was standing still with her hands raised when she was shot in Kafr Qaddum during a weekly demonstration last Saturday. Video taken by Foss captures the moment she was hit.

Foss and another activist were walking with an elderly Palestinian man who asked them to help him get back to his car which the soldiers were using as a shield. International activists often attend Palestinian protests in a bid to discourage Israelis from using excessive force.

The man was talking to the soldiers and Foss and the other activist were filming from a distance. A soldier tells Foss it is dangerous and she responds: “It’s dangerous that you’re pointing a gun at us,” as a shot is fired. Seconds later, another shot is heard and Foss is hit in the abdomen.

The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said last week it had asked the Israeli authorities to explain the circumstances, VG reports.

Foss, who is an International Solidarity Movement volunteer, returned to the village the next Friday to support demonstrators. The weekly protests at Kafr Qaddum are to demonstrate against the closure of a road which has been closed to Palestinians for seven years, forcing them to travel more than 14 km (9 miles) to reach the regional capital of Nablus.

In a video, filmed before she was shot, she said that although the demonstrations had not started, the IDF had already “invaded the town.”

Foss was walking away from the IDF’s tear gas when she was shot in the ankle by a rubber bullet. When she was in an ambulance with another man who had been shot in the shoulder, they had to turn back after another person was shot in the head.

An IDF spokesperson told RT that the protests were “violent riots” and “Palestinians threw stones at IDF soldiers and burned tires.”

“The foreign national mentioned in the article, in both incidents, stood amongst the rioters whilst they carried out violence against the security forces,” the spokesperson said. “The claims regarding alleged harm to uninvolved people by riot dispersal means, will be investigated and the findings will be examined by the Military Advocate General’s Office.”

Activist Nirit Haviv told Haaretz she asked one of the soldiers why they had shot a woman last week. According to Haviv, the soldier said, “What are you talking about, we don’t shoot women unless she was standing next to the primary inciter.”

While rubber-coated steel bullets are seen as non lethal, the injuries they inflict can be catastrophic, particularly when fired at close range.

“Thousands of Palestinians have been shot this year alone. By rubber coated steel bullets and by live ammunition.” Foss said in a statement. “Palestinians get shot for the crime of demonstrating for their basic human rights—or simply for the ‘crime of being born Palestinian’. Whilst my case have been blown up in media, theirs go unnoticed.”

International Airline Group (IAG), the company which owns British Airways has bought a stake in the rapidly expanding budget airline, Norwegian Air.

Although Norwegian Air has reported, they were unaware of the acquisition until today, the owners of British Airways may make a full bid for the airline.

Shares in Norwegian Air Shuttle have soared by 37 per cent according to Bloomberg after IAG referred to the potential investment as an “attractive investment.”

Norwegian have reported that they have not held talks with IAG, but that interest in bidding for the airline “confirms the sustainability and potential of our business model and global growth.”

In a statement released by IAG, the company said: “The minority investment is intended to establish a position from which to initiate discussions with Norwegian, including the possibility of a full offer.”

According to Bloomberg, IAG will use the 4.61 per cent stake in the budget airline to “initiate discussions with the Norwegian.”

Taking over Norwegian would rid the company of a rival that entices customers with its low, long-haul flight prices.

The purchase of Norwegian would allow IAG to “a fleet with some of the newest fuel-efficient jets” Bloomberg explained.

IAG, which already owns the budget airline, Aer Lingus, the flag carrier airline for Ireland, is said to have “pounced” after keeping a watchful eye on the Nordic airline for the past few months.

The Nordic airline went on to add: “Norwegian has not been in any discussions or dialogue with IAG about the matter. Norwegian believes that IAG’s interest in the company confirms the sustainability and potential of our business model and global growth.”

According to the Independent, Norwegian Air Shuttle has become the third biggest budget airline in Europe.

Second only to UK airline carriers easyJet and Ryanair.

However unlike the low-cost UK airlines, Norwegian has expanded into budget long-haul flights.

A large percentage of these flights depart from Gatwick to the US, but flight routes also include Buenos Aires and Singapore.

The airline launched in 1993 by Bjorn Kjos, a former fighter pilot who remains chief executive.

The announce of the potential bid for Norwegian Air Shuffle follows the BA announcement yesterday for lower flight prices for long-haul passengers.

British Airways passengers have introduced a “basic fare” for passengers of 10 flight routes.

In the hope of appealing to a broader range of passengers, the new cheaper fare will restrict passengers to hand-baggage only and could lower flight prices by up to £60.

Adam Daniels, British Airways’ chief commercial officer, said: “We know that when our customers travel with us, their needs vary from trip to trip – some will be flying on business, some for leisure, some will be on short hops, others will be longer stays.

“We need to ensure that the fares we provide reflect those differing needs so customers can select the best option for them on that occasion.

“Someone travelling for a short meeting or leisure break, who isn’t planning to check in a bag and is happy for us to allocate them a seat, will appreciate the option to secure a lower fare.
