Think about your closest batch of friends. Would they survive in a world inspired by Norse myths and monstrosities? Against two other coordinated factions? Rend takes groups of players and tests their abilities to survive against creatures, the elements, and their rivals, with victory leading to even further power.

Rend prioritizes working together as a team. This may mean putting together a stronghold to fortify your territory or going out to take down some nasty monsters, gather resources, discover artifacts, or just go on a killing spree. It’s all helpful in the long run, but only one faction will be declared victorious at the end of a cycle. Survival is as important as going out and clobbering opposing teams, so you will need to watch out for more than just the attacks of your online opponents.

If you’re skilled enough to be crowned victorious, the rewards you are given can be used in the next round to bolster your strength. Just hope you have a good enough team to be able to use them efficiently. Not that you can’t grow you character through unique skills tree to otherwise gain strength, but the victory boost is always nice when you’re dealing with colossal mythological monsters, with Rend offering a little history lesson alongside its action and survival-based play.

Given a certain movie that released last year, you might be familiar with Ragnarok, the end-times of Norse Mythology, the apocalyptic battle that kills god and monster alike. But before the battle rages, winter comes, the titular fimbulwinter destined to wipe out life on earth. It’s during this raging final storm that Fimbul takes place, pitting your Viking warrior against the low poly beasts of Norse myth.

In your quest to save Midgard, you guide an old Viking berserker through the snowswept Norse woods, engaging in dodge-heavy melee fights with other humans, looming trolls, and powerful Jotun. Hacking and slashing with your sword and shield lets you slice through hordes of foes, using powerful combos and abilities to keep from being overwhelmed.

You won’t be fighting alone either, sometimes battling alongside fellow Vikings to bring down bosses or letting those charging Jotuns obliterate a group of soldiers for you before moving in to defeat the remaining enemies. Outside of battle, the story of Fimbul will be told through comic book panels, presenting your hero and his world in a different and colorful aesthetic.

Archaeologists have uncovered an enormous Viking encampment in eastern England, a discovery that reveals much about the Norse armies that invaded Britain in the 9th century.

The new study by the universities of York and Sheffield shows that the Torksey camp on the River Trent in Lincolnshire was larger than most contemporary towns. Home to thousands of Viking warriors and their families, a force much larger than previously believed, the Norsemen are thought to have wintered in the area before launching a larger invasion.

“The Vikings had previously often raided exposed coastal monasteries and returned to Scandinavia in winter, but in the later 9th century they came in larger numbers, and decided to stay,” Professor Julian Richards from the University of York said.

“This sent a very clear message that they now planned not only to loot and raid – but to control and conquer.”

Scientists had known of the Torksey camp for years, although its size and exact location has been a source of much debate.

Now, the study reveals that the camp lay within a naturally defended area of higher ground, partially surrounded by marshes and bordered on its western side by the River Trent.

Using metal detectors, the researchers found evidence of Vikings repairing their boats and melting down looted gold and silver to make metal bars to trade. More than 300 lead game pieces were also found, suggesting the Vikings passed a lot of their time playing games, waiting for spring and the start of their next offensive.

The discovery forms the basis of a new virtual reality exhibition at Yorkshire Museum illustrating what life was like in the camp in the winter of 872-873 AD.

Professor Dawn Hadley, who led the research, said: “The Vikings’ camp at Torksey was much more than just a handful of hardy warriors – this was a huge base, larger than most contemporary towns, complete with traders, families, feasting, and entertainment.”

The study says that the Torksey evidence allows for a radical reappraisal of the character of Viking winter camps, and the legacy of the Vikings in Anglo-Saxon England.

Aston Martin has a long history of giving its more potent models names that start with the letter V. “Vantage” was first used as long ago as 1950 to distinguish higher-powered versions of existing cars, although it has since become a model in its own right. Since then, Aston has also used Virage, Vanquish, and, for last year’s millionaire track tool, Vulcan. Now there’s set to be another V car, and it will be the quickest yet, with the British sports-car maker confirming that its forthcoming somewhere-beyond-hyper car will be called the Aston Martin Valkyrie.

We’ve already told you about Aston’s grandiose plans for the Valkyrie, which was previously known by its code name of AM-RB 001. It’s being developed by a team led by Red Bull Racing’s chief technical officer, Adrian Newey, and we are promised that it will offer performance comparable to an LMP1 race car in its fully stripped-out track guise; a street-legal version also will be available.

Although we will still need to wait for full technical details on this adjective-stretching machine, Aston has also confirmed that Michelin will be making the tires, with unique-to-the-car Pilot Sport Cup 2s under development. These will be 265/35R-20s at the front and enormous 325/30R-21s at the rear.

As for the origins of that name, Aston has helpfully added a note to its press release to give more details, upon which we won’t even attempt to improve:

“Norse Mythology: The Valkyrie—literal translation from Old Norse being ‘Chooser of the slain’—are female figures who select who may live and who may die in battle. The Valkyrie then bring half of those slain on the battlefield to Valhalla, the afterlife governed by Odin, Ruler of the Gods.”
