Weight loss diets come in all shapes and sizes, and many involve cutting out certain food groups.

But choosing the right diet for you can be difficult.

An expert, Lloyd Bridger, co-founder of leading online training guide provider, LDN Muscle, has ranked seven of the most popular diets exclusively for Express.co.uk.

“All diets cause weight loss by limiting your calorie intake. That’s it. There’s no magic insulin fairy or adaptive hormonal changes that make one diet superior to another, they all work by causing you to eat fewer calories than you are burning,” he explained.

“So when talking about specific diets, we want to look if they are sustainable in the long term (to help you keep weight off) and whether they are promoting a healthy mental relationship with food.”

Ketogenic

Ketogenic, or ‘keto’ for short, champions the idea that by only eating fat your body will achieve a state called ketogenesis where it only burns fat for energy.

Unfortunately, for many people due to their genetics this isn’t possible, plus it doesn’t even guarantee weight loss as you have to be eating fewer calories than you are consuming.

Vegan

Veganism is the biggest fashion trend right now in dieting. While it does encourage better food choices and advocacy of better animal welfare, going vegan does not ensure weight loss as you can still gain fat by eating too many calories. It can also lead to deficiencies in certain minerals and vitamins if you’re unaware of your food choices.

Paleo

The idea that you only eat what your ancestors did is fundamentally flawed. If you fail to look into your genealogy for thousands of years, how do you know if they were in a region where avocados even grew?

There are many subsets of paleo which have different rules on what you can and can’t eat, as there is no overall consensus on what constitutes paleo.

It can however help to improve your choices and eat more fresh, nutrient dense foods.

Nordic

Similar to the Mediterranean diet, Nordic diet puts emphasis on eating a variety of fresh foods local to Scandinavia.

Oily fish is a staple of the Nordic diet, which many of us lack, so it will help increase your omega oil intake. Plus it means you can eat dansk aebleskiver (danish donuts), right?

Rapid weight loss is unsustainable and stats show that most people who try this gain back the weight they lost within a year, and more!

There are no proven benefits to avoiding solid food, and doing this will inevitably cause decreased satiety – which means you will feel hungry all the time.

This sort of restriction leads to binge eating, which leads to feelings of failure and more restriction. It’s a vicious circle.

Dukan

I don’t really know where to start with this diet, it’s terrible.

Limiting yourself to 100 foods for the rest of your life to maintain weight lost during the diet (while only eating 72 of these during the ‘phases’) – it’s completely unnecessary, nor is it realistic if you ever want to enjoy food again.

By limiting your food intake to 500 kcal for 2 days of the week, you are creating an overall weekly calorie deficit which means you will lose weight.

The 5:2 diet shows you that you can still eat a normal diet and lose weight, but fasting has been shown to hold no benefit over a small daily calorie deficit – which is more sustainable in the long term.

As for non-EU member Norway, only 10 percent suggested that it would be a good idea for the country to join the European Union. The concept of the so-called ‘Nordic Union,’ which would see Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland implementing joint policies, was backed by 32 percent of Norwegians.

The poll was conducted in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, with around 1,000 people surveyed in each of the countries. The researchers didn’t ask those in Finland and Iceland for their opinion.

The respondents weren’t asked in the survey to explain the reasons behind their low level of trust in the EU.

With the bloc going through a massive migrant crisis since 2015, Sweden and Denmark were forced to accommodate thousands of people fleeing unrest in North Africa and the Middle East.

In Sweden, the right-wing Sweden Democrats, who promote an anti-migrant agenda, have been recently polling at a record 20 percent and are seen as among the favorites in the September 9 election. The country has received 400,000 asylum requests since 2012, with migrants believed by many to be contributing to the rise in crime and social tension.

The authorities in Denmark have taken a tough stance on migrants, admitting that integration policies have failed in the country. They announced plans to teach “Danish values” to children in ghettos and introduced a ban on burqa female full body veils, with huge fines for repeat offenders.

Stranded on a foreign island, Eirik and his family have to build a settlement from scratch, fend off bad guys, and just try to survive from one day to the next. That last part is actually the hardest, since hunger, dehydration, sleep deprivation, and depression are much more fearsome adversaries than the occasional raider.

Dead in Vinland is, at its very core, a management game, wrapped up in a well-done Nordic narrative and garnished with some turn-based combat that has the tactical depth of Darkest Dungeon. I half-expected to not like it due to its heavy reliance on micromanagement, but it turns out that I cannot help but adore this game.

You start with your family of four, driven from their homes by invading Vikings and stranded on unknown shores. Each day is divided into three phases, two of which can be spent on various activities and the last one for relaxation, nourishment, and sharing stories around the camp fire. During the day, you delegate activities, such as exploring the island, gathering resources or food, or developing new activities.

In order to survive, you need to balance all these things – otherwise you’ll starve to death, die of thirst or sheer exhaustion, or succumb to despair. Each one of your characters has different traits and stats which make them more suitable for specific tasks – but sometimes you’ll just have to improvise to make ends meet.

The thing is: you’re always on the brink of annihilation and way too often saved by some narrow escape or windfall. It’s death by atrition if you don’t play it right, and it certainly feels that way. Despair is the name of this game and every new day without bad news feels like a gift.

Thankfully, your little camp will grow, with additional characters joining your settlement and adding their talents to your ragged group of survivors. Of course, this also means that you’ll have more mouths to feed… And then there’s the “ruler” of the island – and he demands a tribute.

Dead in Vinland is a game of thriving against all odds, of despair and hope, and it completely got me under its spell. While I’m constantly tempted to restart on a more forgiving difficulty, I just cannot abandon these people. Not as long as everyone is alive – which seems less likely with every passing day. The game’s presentation is lovely as well – the slow and sad, almost dirge-like music in particular is quite wonderful.

THE Vikings were slow to adopt coins. They preferred to pay by cutting pieces off silver bars, at least until contact with the rest of Europe convinced them of the benefits of standardised coins. On September 25th Nets, a payments firm based in Denmark, announced that Hellman & Friedman, an American private-equity firm, had offered to acquire it for DKr33.1bn ($ 5.3bn). Nets is following Bambora, a Swedish-based payments firm, for which Ingenico, a French electronic-payments firm, offered €1.5bn ($ 1.7bn) in July.
