“On the ground the intelligence is non-existent, we don’t have an embassy there anymore, we don’t have any kind of official or formal presence there anymore, and… what the military collects remotely can only go so far,” Kiriakou, a former CIA officer-turned whistleblower, told RT.
The Pentagon earlier implied that it has some intelligence on hand, including of its own, which it has to look into before a final decision on Syria can be made. “We’re still assessing the intelligence — ourselves and our allies,” US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Wednesday.
Kiriakou doubts that any of the countries that have leveled accusations against Syria possess any clear intelligence. For instance, British PM Theresa May, he said, chose to use reservations, saying, “all indications point to” the Syrian government culpability instead of explicitly attributing the blame to Damascus.
“That tells me that there is no intelligence that says: this is what happened, this is who did it.”
At an urgent meeting of the British Cabinet on Thursday, the ministers also appeared to leave room for error, stating that it was “highly likely” that the Syrian government was to blame.
“Unless you already have people on the ground who are reporting back and who you’ve cultivated over the course of years you are not going to get information,” the former CIA agent explained, adding that it will be even harder, if not outright impossible, to find out who was behind the alleged incident in a post-factum investigation.
“It could be easy to determine that chlorine was used, or something else was used, it’s going to be virtually impossible to find out who did it,” he said.
A potential assault on Syria, an independent country, by the US cannot be justified under international law, Kiriakou said.
“A response by us would be clearly a violation of the United Nations charter, which makes it a war crime,” he said, noting that the US neither has the permit from the UN Security Council nor from the “legitimate internationally recognized government of Syria to attack their property, their land.”
It is “a big guessing game” what happens in Syria next, Kiriakou said. There is, however, a plan for de-escalation if tensions over Syria with Russia and Iran reach a boiling point, he believes.
“Plan B, I think, is backing off. It’s declaring victory and going home,” Kiriakou said, adding that it is not the US military but, ironically, the US diplomats who are pulling the world dangerously close to an all-out war.
“When I was at the CIA, one thing that was very clear to me was that it was the military that was least excited to use force. It was the State Department, that always wanted to attack, attack, attack.”
With Bush-era war hawk John Bolton now advising the president on matters of national security, this scenario has all the chances to become reality, Kiriakou said.
“Now that John Bolton is a National Security Adviser, we have a real problem with the willingness in this White House to use force,” he said.
Were it solely up to the generals to decide on using the military option, “there would not be any of that,” Kiriakou said. But with Bolton calling shots, the US risks entrenching in Syria and going far beyond a single major strike, as it was in the case of the US missile attack on Syria’s Shayrat Airbase last year.
“I fear that we’re going to go deeper, far deeper this time than we did a year ago. This isn’t going to be a pinprick strike if we finally decide to move in.”

The head of Nigeria’s statistical authority made an embarrassing blunder Thursday when he accidentally tweeted the country’s latest inflation figures an hour before their official release.
Dr. Yemi Kale, the Statistician-General of Africa’s biggest economy, tweeted the data at 8:03 a.m. Nigerian time (8:03 a.m. BST), 57 minutes before the data was meant to be published.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Fox News host Sean Hannity accidentally referenced Hillary Clinton’s nonexistent administration on Monday, continuing an unusual emerging trend among allies of President Donald Trump.
While discussing an Obama administration-era uranium deal that many Trump supporters have tried to link to the Clintons for years, the host tripped up.
“Now that we have no Trump collusion, here’s what we do have tonight,” Hannity said. “This is what the media will ignore. This is what matters, these are the facts, this is where the evidence comes in.”
“What did President Clinton, or President Clinton wannabe, President Obama, and key members of the administration — what did they know about the Uranium One scandal?” he said.
Hannity wasn’t the first Trump ally in recent days to accidentally reference Clinton’s nonexistent administration while stoking anger over the Uranium One nuclear deal.
Over the past several days, another top administration booster has repeatedly referred to Clinton’s nonexistent administration.
In an interview on “Fox & Friends Weekend” on Saturday, former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski mocked pending indictments of former Trump campaign officials, arguing that media were ignoring the 2012 Uranium One deal. The deal allowed Russia to acquire a partial stake in US uranium production, requiring the confirmation of nine government agencies, including the then Clinton-led state department.
“The speculation is so insane right now,” he said. “What we should be focusing on are the continued lies of the Clinton administration, the continued fallacies that they perpetuate.”

Lewandowski’s clip went viral. Two days later, he slipped up again.
During an interview on Fox Business Network on Monday, the former campaign manager called for a special counsel to investigate the Uranium One deal.
“We knew that the members of the CFIUS committee, the committee of foreign investments in the US, of the members that are sitting on that committee, I think seven or nine of them had ties to the Clinton administration, I mean the Clinton Foundation,” Lewandowski said.

Showtime was hit with a federal class-action lawsuit amid reports that it delivered shoddy or non-existent $ 99 streams of the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight Saturday. This is contrary to Showtime’s promise of 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second.
“Instead of being a ‘witness to history’ as defendant had promised, the only thing plaintiff witnessed was grainy video, error screens, buffer events, and stalls,” declared the lawsuit (PDF) filed in federal court on behalf of a Portland man named Zack Bartel. The suit seeks to represent “thousands of other consumers” unable to stream the Mayweather fight in HD as Showtime advertised.
Defendant intentionally misrepresented the quality and grade of video consumers would see using its app, and knowingly failed to disclose that its system was defective with respect to the amount of bandwidth available, and that defendant’s service would materially fail to conform to the quality of HD video defendant promised.
Bartel bought the service from the Showtime PPV app to stream on his Apple TV, the suit said.

This February, Garmin International got sued (PDF) by inventor Leigh Rothschild and his patent-holding company, Rothschild Connected Devices Innovations LLC (RCDI). RCDI had already sued 68 other companies. A few weeks later, Rothschild’s lawyer got in touch. He wasn’t interested in discussing the technology behind his client’s two patents, which describe making customized mixed beverages. Instead, he asked Garmin to get on board with Rothschild’s “early settlement program,” for a fast payout of $ 75,000.
Garmin didn’t pay up. Instead, the company’s outside counsel Rachael Lamkin sent a letter to Rothschild’s lawyer, explaining that his patents on a “system and method for creating a personalized consumer product” weren’t valid, and ran afoul of Section 101 of the US Patent laws. That’s the section that bars patents that are overly abstract, including “do it on a computer” type patents.
“Whether or not systems and methods for generating customized products are patent-eligible is a well-trodden question, repeatedly decided in the negative,” Lamkin informed him, citing several earlier legal cases.
]]>Moreover, Irina told Russian media that one day before the beating the unidentified perpetrators spilled beer on his head and made him smoke a cigarette. She denies receiving debt recovery letters or taking the loan in the first place.
Yekaterinburg police have confirmed to Life.ru that Irina indeed has no bank loans.
Meanwhile, Irina has revealed that her sister and near-identical twin, Olga, might be the one the debt collectors were seeking. Olga took a car loan from the bank in 2011, Irina said.
“She has the same surname as me, the same date of birth and she is registered at the same place as me,” Irina said. She noted that while her twin reportedly paid back the principal sum of the loan, 300,000 rubles, she also had the same amount due in interest.
Being aware of her looming troubles with the debt collectors, Olga, whose car has been since confiscated and all her credit cards canceled, changed her contact numbers and has for a long time not been living with her sister.
Russia’s Investigative Committee has launched a probe into the suspected extortion of money and is searching for three male suspects in what is being described as a “cynical beating” of a “helpless minor,” Aleksandr Shuryga, the senior aide to the head of the Russia’s prosecutor’s office Yekaterinburg branch, told media.
“All the circumstances will be carefully examined,” Shuryga said, adding that medics are to review the extent of the bodily harm inflicted on a child by the assailants. If caught and convicted, they face up to seven years in prison and a hefty fine.
According to Irina, the battered boy has been severely shaken by the incident and refuses to speak about what had happened to anyone but her.
“Gleb is a special child. He studies at a special school, experiences mental problems, epileptic fits and is a little bit delayed in development,” Irina said. The boy used to have a disabled status, but it was removed last year, she added.
While the incident is still being investigated, the Life.ru report has alleged to have uncovered the collector agency in question, which it says bought the debt from the bank in 2015 and was one of the biggest in the industry. However, it was allegedly excluded from the national association of the collector agencies after it failed to pay the membership fee in March last year. Reporters say the agency cannot be reached for inquiry.

President Donald Trump cited a nonexistent incident in Sweden while talking about the relationship between terror attacks and refugees around the world during a rally in Melbourne, Florida, on Saturday.
“You look at what’s happening in Germany. You look at what’s happening last night in Sweden … Sweden … who would believe this? Sweden, they took in large numbers, they are having problems like they never thought possible. You look at what’s happening Brussels, you look at what’s happening all over the world,” Trump said.
No incident occurred in Sweden on Friday night.
However, Fox News host Tucker Carlson ran an interview on Friday night’s broadcast of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” with documentarian and media personality Ami Horowitz, who presented a clip from a new film documenting alleged violence committed by refugees in Sweden. The segment went on extensively about a supposed crime surge in Sweden and its links to immigrant populations.
Crime rates in Sweden have stayed relatively stable, with some fluctuations, over the last decade, according to the 2016 Swedish Crime Survey.
This isn’t the first time that there has been a correlation between Trump’s statements and programming on cable news, of which he is a noted fan.
In late January, Trump tweeted about gun violence in Chicago shortly after after an “O’Reilly Factor” segment on the same topic, which cited the same statistics and even used the word “carnage,” a recent favorite noun of Trump’s.
In February, Trump declared in a tweet that he was calling “my own shots” in his administration shortly after MSNBC “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough asked on air whether Trump’s chief White House strategist, Steve Bannon, was “calling the shots” in the White House.

]]>White House press secretary Sean Spicer suggested he misspoke when he cited an Atlanta terror attack that never happened.
At least three times last month, Spicer mentioned a nonexistent Atlanta, Georgia, terror attack while defending Trump’s controversial travel ban. Spicer named Atlanta alongside the Boston Marathon bombings and the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California.
In a statement to ABC News Wednesday night, Spicer said he “clearly meant Orlando,” apparently referring to the mass shooting in June at a gay nightclub in Florida.
The Daily Beast first caught Spicer’s misstatements on Tuesday.
On Jan. 29, Spicer explained on ABC’s “This Week”:
“What do we say to the family who loses somebody over a terroristic [sic] — to whether it’s Atlanta or San Bernardino or the Boston bomber? Those people, each of whom had gone out to a country and then come back.”
The very next day, Spicer took to MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to defend Trump’s travel ban again:
“What happened if we didn’t act and somebody was killed? … Too many of these cases that have happened — whether you’re talking about San Bernardino, Atlanta … would you wait until you do? The answer is we act now to protect the future.”
Finally, at a press briefing on January 30, Spicer once again referenced Atlanta:
“But I don’t think you have to look any further than the families of the Boston Marathon, in Atlanta, in San Bernardino …”
Atlanta Police Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Espy said in a statement to CNN the department was unaware of any recent terrorist attacks. “From what we can recall, the last known terrorist attack in the state was 1996 in which Eric Rudolph was implicated,” she wrote, referring to a bombing that happened at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta.
Top Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway last week was criticized for citing a “Bowling Green Massacre” — another terror attack that never happened.
Earlier this week, the White House released a list of 78 terror attacks that it alleged went underreported by the media, ostensibly to support its argument for the travel ban. Several incidents on that list, however, were indeed widely reported by news organizations worldwide.
