The Rookie‘s Season 3 premiere ended with John Nolan sweeping up plaster dust at his home. But whether he can clean up the mess he made of his career remains to be seen. The new season picked up right where the last one ended, with sirens wailing outside Nolan’s home just as he discovered the evidence planted inside his bedroom wall by dirty Detective Nick Armstrong. Nolan smartly phoned a lawyer, Wes, just before Sergeant Gray came to lead him away in cuffs. Back at the cop shop, Nolan ignored much of a frustrated Wes’ advice, choosing not to keep mum but instead tell all about what he and Harper had been through in the name of proving Armstrong is on the Darien crime family’s payroll. With Armstrong himself recuperating from his gunshot at the hospital, Nolan threw a hail Mary, offering to arrange a meet with Ruben Darien under the premise of wanting to replace Armstrong as his inside man. Gray begrudgingly agreed to the scheme, but despite the team’s best efforts they lost track of Nolan after he got picked up and had a hood thrown over his head. Next thing Nolan knew, he was dropped off at night in the middle of a junkyard lot, where he was met by Ruben… as well as Armstrong, who slipped away from his hospital detail with Rosalind Dyer’s help. What happened next… well, it was a bit unclear? Armstrong’s gun jammed when he went to put down Nolan, and a weird melee broke out. Scrambling on and out of shadows, Nolan picked off the henchmen one by one, then got the drop on Darien himself and called 911, while Armstrong appeared down for the count Back at the precinct, Harper tried to take the blame for Nolan’s misguided, rule-bending approach to justice, but Gray wasn’t having it. And while Nolan wasn’t booted off the force, his brush with noble cause corruption (“the end justifies the means”) did earn him a letter of reprimand in his file. And for a rookie, that typically demarks a big, dead end. Meaning, any dream of one day being a detective is (probably) dashed. Breaking down the decision to dampen the oldest rookie’s prospects, Hawley says, “I do think that it’s very important that actions have repercussions, and noble cause corruption is a huge thing. It is a big problem of policing, but it’ll also open up other opportunities for him, and it’ll give him something to try and overcome, which is ultimately more dramatic than him just getting an easy pass.” So while Nolan in success can become P2 (a regular patrol officer) and, in theory, become a training officer at some point, “to get out of uniform, to become a detective, or even to go to a specialized unit like S.W.A.T.” is not going to happen, Hawley explains. “It’s important that we set up situations that we honor,” Hawley says, as was done in the Season 1 episode where Nolan killed an armed robber. “We took everybody through that process of what it was like, and that set a bar for us,” he notes. “On most cop shows, cops kill people and they end up back on the street after the commercial break. We can’t. That’s not what we do. And it definitely affects our storytelling, I think, in a good way. In the same sense, we need to honor this punishment, but it’ll open up other doorways for stories for us.” “Her point, which is very relevant, is that she can’t show up on Day 1 pregnant, because they’ll see her differently. They’ll judge her,” says the EP. “They’ll think she’s delicate, and they won’t give her a real shot. This is a struggle that a lot of other women go through in the workplace, and a lot of women do hide this, and so we will explore that and the toll that takes — and then, at some point, when she decides to talk about it. It adds a really important dynamic.” Wednesday’s episode of Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists perpetuated a theory long held by the Freeform franchise: Never trust a handsome gentleman with a British accent. Through the magic of cyber-sleuthing, Taylor obtained the IP address of the computer used to cause the blackout the night her brother was killed: “It was a Hotchkiss device, logged onto by… Jeremy! He timed the Beacon Guard blackout to give himself a window of time to get up on the roof, then arrive back at the bottom before the crowd showed up.” What’s more, “Jeremy was walking towards Thorne Hall moments before the blackout.” Taylor’s discovery was enough to convince the other Liars, all of whom ditched a Beacon Heights University gala to confront Nolan’s possible killer by the docks. After a few vaguely ominous statements (“If I tell the police what I did, my life will be over!”), Jeremy tried to get away, but Quickdraw Hotchkiss was packing heat and took him down with a single bullet. Though the Liars were more than willing to craft a cover story for their murderous pal — Ava even planted a blunt object in Jeremy’s hand to make it look like Taylor was acting in self-defense — they won’t be needing it, as Caitlin discovered at the last minute that Jeremy is, in fact, alive. Oops? Other developments worth discussing… * Prior to the events mentioned above, Claire informed Mona that her position at BHU has been terminated due to her inappropriate behavior with Mason — because apparently PLL suddenly decided to start cracking down on its teacher-student relationships. * Taylor revealed that she created Beacon Guard to keep people safe after her own father was murdered. (That said, I’m not giving up on my theory that Mr. Hotchkiss is alive and connected to his son’s death.) * Despite a last-minute assist from Andrew, it’s really starting to look like Dylan will be expelled from BHU for cheating. * Ava shared a kiss with Zach, which could also be their last, depending on how aggressively Dana goes after her over the bag of stolen money she discovered at Caitlin’s house. Do you believe that Jeremy really killed Nolan? If not, who’s No. 1 on your list of suspects? This was the last episode before the big season finale, so drop a comment with your best guesses below. “He got as close to getting fired as he could,” showrunner Alexi Hawley tells TVLine. And though Nolan (played by Nathan Fillion) in an upcoming episode “will be hopeful that he can overcome” this roadblock, it will be made clear to him, “That letter went to everybody, and they’re all younger than you are, so they’re going to outlast you,” Hawley previews.
Elsewhere in the season opener, on a lighter but similarly career-shifting note: Officer Angela Lopez (played by an expectant Alyssa Diaz) learned that she and Wes (Shawn Ashmore) are expecting a child, just before Sergeant Gray (Richard T. Jones) delivered the news that she has been promoted to detective. But rather than share her personal situation with Gray right then and there, her plan is “to keep her pregnancy a secret as long as she can, as long as she’s not showing enough,” says Hawley.

Ever since he played Bruce Wayne’s wry butler Alfred Pennyworth in 2005’s Batman Begins, Michael Caine has been a good luck charm for director Christopher Nolan. The Oscar-winning actor has appeared in every feature Nolan has directed in the past decade, including Dunkirk, the filmmaker’s World War II film that’s currently in theaters. Find out about the Michael Caine Dunkirk cameo below.
Despite seeing the movie in a pristine, immersive 70mm IMAX format, I didn’t see Caine anywhere on screen in the new movie. It turns out that’s for good reason: he doesn’t actually appear on screen at any point in Dunkirk. Caine’s cameo consists of a vocal performance – his voice can be heard over the radio giving orders to British fighter pilots, including Tom Hardy‘s character.
Nolan confirmed the cameo in an interview with NJ.com:
“Yes, good for you for spotting him. It’s shocking to me that a lot of people haven’t, when he has really one of the most distinctive voices in cinema. I wanted very much to squeeze him in here. It’s a bit of a nod to his character in Battle of Britain. And also, it’s Michael. He has to be in all my films, after all.”
I’d never heard of Battle of Britain before, but in that 1969 film (which, perhaps not coincidentally, also mentions the soldiers at Dunkirk), Caine plays a Royal Air Force pilot who takes to the skies and fights the German Luftwaffe even though they’re tremendously outnumbered. Early James Bond producer Harry Saltzman produced, Goldfinger director Guy Hamilton directed, and the movie co-starred Laurence Olivier, Christopher Plummer, Robert Shaw, and a young Ian McShane. Here’s the trailer:
That’s a nice little shout-out from Nolan. But the trouble is, Dunkirk’s sound mix is so uneven that not only did I not understand most of what Caine said over the radio, I didn’t even notice that it was him speaking in the first place. Caine has one of the most easily identifiable voices in Hollywood, so it’s a shame his vocal cameo is practically unintelligible.
Maybe it’s just me, but one of my biggest complaints about Dunkirk was not being able to hear or decipher what the actors were saying. Granted, the film is so reliant on its powerful visuals to tell the story that it could be a silent movie and still get its point across, but for a film that actively chooses to feature sparse dialogue, I wish I could have better understood what little there was to hear.
Dunkirk is in theaters now.

(Welcome to Movie Mixtape, where we find cinematic relatives and seek out interesting connections between new releases and older movies that allow us to rethink and enjoy what’s in our theaters as well as the favorites on our shelf. In this edition: Dunkirk.)
In the early summer of 1940, a group of Allied soldiers had to be evacuated from their position on the beach of Dunkirk, France, after being surrounded by Nazi troops in the first weeks of the Fall of France. The events necessitating their rescue, according to Prime Minister Winston Churchill, were a “colossal military disaster,” and the resulting mission (Operation Dynamo) is now know rightly as the Miracle of Dunkirk.
Unless you’ve had your head in the sand, you know that’s the subject of Christopher Nolan’s latest film, which has near-universal praise from critics. Some are pointing to the bleachers to predict an Oscar. Others are calling it his best film in a career littered with greatness.
Let’s see what kinds of movie connections we can make to Dunkirk as it dominates screens (big and bigger) this weekend.
Men who were afraid and the men who wouldn’t let them be! The Dunkirk released a half-century before Nolan’s came during a fascinating crossroads in the late 1950s, when the appetite for war films – especially those documenting Allied victories in WWII – was still high, but filmmakers felt bolder about adding layers of moral complication to the stories. The triumphs were still there, but the tone of rah-rah patriotism wasn’t a pre-requisite any longer. Dunkirk‘s complexity is flavored by director Leslie Norman’s own experiences after serving as a Major during WWII.
Thus, you have famed dinosaur-resurrecter Richard Attenborough playing a war profiteer whose actions are contextualized by the dire situation hundreds of Allied soldiers find themselves in. At the heart of the film is the renowned John Mills, playing a Corporal who stands steadfast in the face of doom both for the sake of the survival of his men, but also their spirits.
If you want even more time on the beach, the Jean-Paul Belmondo-starring Weekend at Dunkirk is another great option.
It’s time to take this movie’s reputation back from the meme machine. Oliver Hirschbiegel’s stirring drama is much more than the “Nein! Nein! Nein!” scene.
The film, which takes place in the final drastic days in Adolf Hitler’s (Bruno Ganz) bunker obviously represents the other side of the war from Dunkirk. Like bombastic siblings, one represents Allied triumph near the beginning of the war and the other represents Nazi failure at the end of it. Downfall is peerless in its subject matter and the intensity of its portrayal. Ganz is a beast, and Traudl Junge is the kind of incredible character who could only exist in real life. Alexandra Maria Lara gives us a human handhold while shutting the heavy doors inside the bunker, and the real-life Junge’s appearance at the end is a sobering reminder that past is prologue.
And, sure, Hirschbiegel is a fan of the memes, too.
Like Harry Styles long after him, David Bowie utilized pop stardom as a vehicle for an acting career (he’s in less than two seconds of the comedy war film Virgin Soldiers). The responses to Styles in Dunkirk seems to be “He’s actually good!” but the responses to Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth ranged from “Huh? What?” to recognition of a beautiful, raw performance. Bowie plays an alien visiting earth from a planet on the verge of a calamitous drought. He becomes the wealthy head of a tech company by patenting his people’s inventions here on earth, but he also discovers sex and alcohol to disastrous effect, and, when his alien nature is discovered by a close colleague, it sets his story off on a chaotic spiral.
There are dozens of performances by young pop stars leveraging their fame to get into movies. This one is the best.

Movie and TV tie-in books and games are a thing of the past — these days, it’s all about virtual reality. Fox made one to go with The Martian and HBO created a VR Castle Black to promote Game of Thrones. We even got to explore Westworld’s and The Man in the High Castle’s universes through their VR experiences at New York Comic-Con. Now, Warner Bros. has given Christopher Nolan’s action flick Dunkirk the same treatment by teaming up with Intel, Microsoft and Dell to create an experience that shows you what it’s like to be trapped on a beach while being attacked by enemy soldiers during World War II.
360-degree VR videos like this are typically optimized for standard HD and 4K media, but Practical Magic (the company that created it) had to stitch images 40 times that resolution. To make that possible, the team used Dell blade servers and workstations powered by Intel Xeon processors. While the movie itself won’t be out until July 21st, the experience, which will drop you straight “into each of the movie’s three key perspectives — land, sea and air,” is now available for the HTC Vive, Oculus and Samsung Gear VR. Although not as immersive, you can also watch it on your computers through YouTube and Facebook 360.
