Remainers have likened the revelation to “self-immolation.”

The possibility of a no-deal Brexit made the Ministry of Defence “dust off” blueprints to use of army trucks and helicopters to deliver key supplies to far flung parts of the UK – something usually reserved for civil emergencies, like severe weather.

However a source inside the department said they have not yet received “a formal request” to assist the civilian authorities, according to the Sunday Times.

An unnamed minister downplayed the alarmist nature of the news to the paper, saying that the government was “just being realistic” about the potential pitfalls of a no-deal, adding that the army would only be called in if blockages at ports were preventing the supply of food, fuel, and medicines from entering the country.

“There is a lot of civil contingency planning around the prospect of no deal. That’s not frightening the horses, that’s just being utterly realistic,” they told the Times report.

Without securing a new Free Trade Agreement with the EU, a no-deal, the UK would revert to World Trade Organization rules resulting in the imposing of tariffs on goods that the UK sends to the EU, and on goods the EU sends to the UK.

This lack of “frictionless trade” could see a 10-mile-long motorway in south-east England turned into a “holding area” for goods vehicles, as up to 10,000 trucks a day would suddenly require customs checks to enter the EU, according to the Financial Times.

The pro-EU Labour MP David Lammy took aim at the news on Twitter saying: “God, help us. This is not coming from Remainers. This is not project fear. Pro-Brexit Ministers are drawing up blueprints for the army to deliver food, fuel and medicine if we leave the EU with no deal.”

“We have a duty to prevent this self-immolation,” he added.

However, the former Brexit secretary David Davis, who resigned from the position earlier this month over his dissatisfaction with a possible soft Brexit deal, dismissed the story as an attempt to scare people in order to secure a Free Trade Agreement “which will tank the economy.”

Talk of shortages of food and medicines in the wake of a possible no-deal has come to the fore recently, with NHS bosses planning to stockpile key drugs and blood supplies in the event the service has to go on a permanent winter-crisis footing.

Supermarkets, meanwhile have told suppliers to make plans for a no-deal which could see them stockpile goods such a tea and coffee for periods much longer than normal.

PARIS (Reuters) – Airbus issued its strongest warning yet over the impact of Britain’s departure from the European Union, saying a separation without a final deal between Britain and the EU would force it to reconsider its long-term position in the country.

In a statement issued late on Thursday, Airbus also said current plans for a transition period ending in December 2020 were too short for the planemaker to adapt its supply chain and would mean no further expansion in its UK supplier base.

  • A “doomsday” style Brexit could see the country grind to a halt within a fortnight.
  • This is because the Port of Dover would collapse on “day one,” according to scenarios drawn up for David Davis, as reported by The Sunday Times.
  • From there, things just get worse as food would run out “within days” and hospitals would run out of medicine “within weeks.”
  • A spokesman for the Department for Exiting the European Union has dismissed this scenario from becoming reality.

  • Amber Rudd is reportedly under pressure to publish the Brexit immigration bill sooner than planned.
  • The bill — which will propose what Britain’s post-Brexit immigration policy should look like — isn’t expected until the end of the year.
  • However, the Home Secretary’s Cabinet colleagues believe the bill is key to ensuring Britain is prepared for a no-deal Brexit.

LONDON — Home Secretary Amber Rudd could bring forward a key Brexit immigration bill which deals with the rights of EU nationals as a Cabinet row over Britain’s preparations for a no-deal Brexit escalates.

The Home Secretary is reportedly under pressure from Cabinet colleagues to bring forward a bill — not currently due in parliament until the end of the year — which details plans to register the 3 million EU nationals currently living in the UK and sets out the UK’s post-Brexit immigration policy.

Macron accuses UK of ‘bluffing’ over threats of no-deal Brexit https://briefnews.eu/macron-accuses-uk-of-bluffing-over-threats-of-no-deal-brexit/ https://briefnews.eu/macron-accuses-uk-of-bluffing-over-threats-of-no-deal-brexit/#respond Fri, 20 Oct 2017 13:25:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/macron-accuses-uk-of-bluffing-over-threats-of-no-deal-brexit/ French President Emmanuel Macron has accused UK politicians of “bluffing” over a “no-deal” Brexit option. Much “still needs to be done” before the next round of negotiations can begin, he added.

“We haven’t even got halfway there yet,” Macron told reporters in Brussels.

“Theresa May’s problem is that those who wanted Brexit never told the British people what the cost would be.”

He insisted that even if some in Britain say it would be possible to walk away from the EU without any deal, May has never mentioned the possibility. He called the speculation about that option “bluffing.”

His comments come as the UK prime minister called on EU leaders to break the deadlock and give her something she could “defend” to the British public.

On Friday morning, European Council President Donald Tusk said EU leaders have given the “green light” for internal preparations to begin on post-Brexit trade talks. He said, however, there has not been sufficient progress on the issues of citizens’ rights, Northern Ireland or the divorce bill to start formal talks.

While there have been efforts to show progress in the strained Brexit negotiations in Brussels, May had hoped by October to kick-start discussions with the other 27 EU leaders on a future trade deal, known as “phase two” of the negotiations.

Tusk added that reports of a deadlock between the EU and UK have been exaggerated, and insisted there has been progress. He said the EU hoped to move to the second phase of talks in December.

May has signaled Britain could pay billions of pounds more in a Brexit divorce bill to secure a start to trade talks before Christmas.

At a news conference on Friday, the UK leader was asked three times if she was offering more money to the EU and gave no denial.
“We will honor the commitments we have made during our membership,” she said.

“Now there has to be more detailed work on those commitments… and we will continue going through them line by line, and the British taxpayers wouldn’t expect its government to do anything else.”

“I know we have a long way to go,” May told reporters, adding “we should recognize what has been achieved to date.” She also insisted the UK “is in touching distance” of a Brexit deal.

May’s conciliatory tone this week has been welcomed by some leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, although others were less impressed. On Friday morning, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite and Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern both called for more tangible proposals from the UK, instead of “rhetoric.”

Merkel said suggestions in Britain that talks should be broken off were “absurd.”

“I have absolutely no doubts that if we are all focused… that we can get a good result. From my side there are no indications that we won’t succeed,” she said.

Pound to euro exchange rate: Sterling PLUMMETS amid Brexit ‘no-deal’ uncertainty https://briefnews.eu/pound-to-euro-exchange-rate-sterling-plummets-amid-brexit-no-deal-uncertainty/ https://briefnews.eu/pound-to-euro-exchange-rate-sterling-plummets-amid-brexit-no-deal-uncertainty/#respond Wed, 18 Oct 2017 07:13:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pound-to-euro-exchange-rate-sterling-plummets-amid-brexit-no-deal-uncertainty/

The pound has dropped even further against the euro amid the uncertainty surrounding the Brexit deal.

Yesterday the pound was trading at 1.126, before dropping to 1.120 today.

It comes after the prime minister Theresa May headed to Brussels to discuss a Brexit deal.

However talks have stalled as confusion rises amongst the EU leaders regarding the new relationship with the UK.

The fear of a no-deal Brexit comes after Amber Rudd declared it “unthinkable” following after Brexit Secretary David Davis told MPS that an option for leaving the EU was “sensible”.

However, the uncertainty surrounding it has caused confusion amongst MPs as they insist that it would harm the UK to consider this option.

Liberal Democrat Brexit spokesman, Tom Brake stated: “David Davis is either sneakily pushing us towards a no deal or has no idea what he’s doing.

“Either conclusion spells chaos for the British people and businesses.

TorFX currency analyst Laura Parsons commented: “Although the GBP/EUR exchange rate initially gained in reaction to the news that UK inflation had hit a five-year high, ongoing Brexit concerns prevented the pound from holding its higher levels.

“The uptick in inflation has increased the odds of the Bank of England (BoE) increasing interest rates next month.

“But with fears for a ‘no deal’ Brexit scenario far from quelled, Sterling’s upside potential is limited.

“However, GBP/EUR may gain if today’s UK jobs data shows an increase in average earnings.”

The drop also follows on from the UK inflation rates hitting a five year high.

Rising to 3 per cent in September, it is the highest reading since 2012, as stated by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

It is set to hit households hard, with food and fuel costing more than usual, as inflation rises quicker than wages.

This could also raise the chances of an increase in interest rates next month.
