The piece Charlie was discussing was from today’s national newspapers, and he spotted a positive story.

He said: “On the theme of the outdoors, some of the negative stuff about people being outdoors was about the litter, and too many people getting together.

“On a slightly lighter note in relation to people going outside – the countryside code, which is a good thing, all the stuff people maybe know about, like shutting a gate and keeping your dog under control, don’t litter – in amongst all the advice now they’re talking about part of the new code.

“Which is to make other people feel more comfortable – the idea is that you should smile more. Some people feel as though the countryside is not a place for them so you can do something and make a difference.”

The Grand Tour’s James May rules out inviting Clarkson to cooking show: ‘No opportunity’ https://briefnews.eu/the-grand-tours-james-may-rules-out-inviting-clarkson-to-cooking-show-no-opportunity/ https://briefnews.eu/the-grand-tours-james-may-rules-out-inviting-clarkson-to-cooking-show-no-opportunity/#respond Thu, 05 Nov 2020 06:26:14 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-grand-tours-james-may-rules-out-inviting-clarkson-to-cooking-show-no-opportunity/

“I understand the delay because material for TV is a precious commodity at the moment and we don’t want to throw it away,” he exclusively said.

“You know, it’s a special. It’s got to go on to the right time.

“Yes, it is difficult to answer people when they go ‘where the bloody hell is it? We know you’ve made it. We know it’s ready. Why don’t they just put it on?’

“And I don’t know what to say apart from just ‘why not watch my cooking show in the meantime, you know?’ But it is coming. And it is I think pretty good.”

James May: Oh Cook launches on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, November 13, 2020.

Good Morning Britain was hosted by Richard Madeley and Charlotte Hawkins today and joining them live in the studio was Matt Hancock MP.

Speaking about his pitch to run for Prime Minister, the health secretary got into a heated discussion with Madeley and cut him off in order to explain his point of view.

Madeley said: “Good luck at uniting your party because at the moment you are completely split.

“You’ve got people like Boris Johnson MP and Esther Mcvey MP saying, ‘We are leaving on October 31 and that’s it and we are prepared to leave without a deal’ .

“And we’ve got people like you saying, ‘no, no, no, no, no, we’ve got to have a deal’ and I just don’t see how you’re going to bridge that?”

Replying, Hancock argued: “But Richard, the thing is this; we’re having this big debate, we then need to come together afterwards and we need to deliver according to whoever wins this and I as Prime Minister would expect that mandate to be followed -“

“So you expect Boris Johnson,” Madeley interrupted and Hancock hit back: “No! Hold on, hold on.”

But Madeley was on a roll and continued: “Hang on, hang on, let me pick up on that. So if Boris Johnson, were to win, the smart money is on him at the moment and we all know that the leader of the pack often falls.

“But lets say he does it and he does take us out [of the EU] on the 31st without a deal, you’d support him in cabinet, would you?”

Attempting to answer, Hancock replied: “I have -“ but that wasn’t good enough for Madeley when he clarified: “Yes or no?”

“Yes,” Hancock stated and then added: “I would support any of the current ten other contenders and I expect and hope they would support me too.”

As for what Hancock’s unique selling point is, he explained to Hawkins: “I’m going to look to the future and the technology to make Britain prosperous.

“I back businesses, I am a big supporter of creating new jobs and better jobs, more money in peoples pockets, using the growing economy to allow people to take home more money.”

It comes as Hancock as well as nine other Conservative MP’s have nominated themselves for the leadership election to take over from Theresa May after she announced she would be standing down on June 7.

She confirmed she would stay on as PM until a new leader is chosen – which senior Conservative figures said should be by the end of July.

Earlier in the week on GMB, Hawkins interviewed Nigel Farage MEP who was on a live video link from Westminster.

Discussing the UK European Election result, Farage snapped at the presenter when she tried to state the statistics.

Hawkins suggested: “What I want to say, they [Change UK] did gain a bigger percentage.”

“No, no,” Farage exclaimed and could be seen shaking his head in disagreement, but Hawkins continued to explain: “If you add up all the pro-remain parties, they did gain a bigger percentage, 35.8 per cent versus the Brexit Party 31.6 per cent. So actually pro-remain parties altogether did win a bigger percentage.”

“No, I’m sorry, this is absolute tosh!” Farage exclaimed.

This week Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid have been replaced for half term week.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.

BBC BIAS? Louise Minchin makes shock admission – ‘NO OPTIMISM' Brexit will be resolved https://briefnews.eu/bbc-bias-louise-minchin-makes-shock-admission-no-optimism-brexit-will-be-resolved/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-bias-louise-minchin-makes-shock-admission-no-optimism-brexit-will-be-resolved/#respond Tue, 29 Jan 2019 14:36:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-bias-louise-minchin-makes-shock-admission-no-optimism-brexit-will-be-resolved/

The BBC’s Louise Minchin admitted that the current state of Brexit required more caution than optimism as she confessed having “no optimism” with Brexit. Westminster correspondent Chris Mason explained: “There are some MP’s who want to take the idea of a no deal Brexit off the table, leaving the European Union at the end of March without an overarching deal in place. There are some that are saying Brexit should be delayed if Theresa May cannot get a deal in the next month perhaps there should be a delay till the end of the year.

“There is also this idea of trying to get around this thorny question of the border in Ireland, this so called backstop idea.

“Ensuring that the border remains open under any circumstances with lots of MP not liking the look of that so they are suggesting alternative arrangements.

“They are the headlines of some of the ideas likely to be discussed and debated.

“Theresa May hopes she might end up with a plan that she can take back to Brussels and say this is will be able o get through the House of Commons.

“But it is entirely possible at the end of the day that they cannot agree on anything.

Mrs Minchin while laughing said: “Chris thank you for the note of, I don’t know what it is optimism?

“No, I don’t think it is, caution, caution at all times, no optimism.”

Today’s votes mark the first opportunity MPs have had to affect the Brexit process since they voted Theresa May deal down earlier this month.

Since then, MPs have been tabling amendments to the government’s plans to try to influence the direction of Brexit. And, as ever, today looks likely to be a difficult one for the Prime Minister.

Today’s vote isn’t a retake of the vote on the deal, but on the Brexit, Plan B Mrs May set out after the crushing defeat on her deal.

The vote is just to say MPs have “considered” plan B, which lays out the government’s next steps on the battle to get an acceptable deal with the EU.

Today’s important and potentially game-changing votes will be on the amendments to that plan, tabled by MPs.

So far, 14 amendments have been tabled and there is no limit to the number of changes MPs could consider.

Commons Speaker John Bercow has the power to pick which amendments MPs can vote on.

‘No existing countermeasures’ to Russian hypersonic weapons, US govt. report admits https://briefnews.eu/no-existing-countermeasures-to-russian-hypersonic-weapons-us-govt-report-admits/ https://briefnews.eu/no-existing-countermeasures-to-russian-hypersonic-weapons-us-govt-report-admits/#respond Tue, 18 Dec 2018 04:47:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/no-existing-countermeasures-to-russian-hypersonic-weapons-us-govt-report-admits/ The US is currently unable to repel an attack from the hypersonic weapons that are being developed by Russia and China, as they can pierce most missile defense systems, a recent US government report has revealed.

“China and Russia are pursuing hypersonic weapons because their speed, altitude, and maneuverability may defeat most missile defense systems, and they may be used to improve long-range conventional and nuclear strike capabilities,” the report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reads.

The report also highlights the challenges to American security posed by Chinese and Russian anti-satellite weapons and stealth aircraft that “could fly faster, carry advanced weapons, and achieve further distances.” The rapid development of the cutting-edge technology “could force US aircraft to operate at father distances and put more US targets at risk,” the report notes.

Speaking at a Valdai Club session in October, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia surpassed its rivals in terms of hypersonic weapons, calling Russia’s prevalence in the field “an obvious fact.”

“Nobody has precise hypersonic weapons. Some plan to test theirs in 18 to 24 months. We have them in service already,” Putin said.

In March Putin unveiled several advanced weapons systems, including the Avangard hypersonic glider warheads and the Kinzhal –or Dagger– hypersonic cruise missile. The Kinzhal can fly at Mach-10 speed and has a reported range of 2,000 km (1243 miles). It was reported that Russia’s advanced Sukhoi Su-57 jet might soon be armed with a missile similar to the Kinzhal.

While the Avangard is about to enter military service, the Kinzhal has already been deployed with the force.

Faced with the unmatched hypersonic capabilities, the Pentagon has launched about a dozen programs to protect the US from hypersonic weapons. A project named ‘Glide Breaker’ to develop an interceptor capable of neutralizing incoming hypersonic gliders has been in the works with The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

‘No brainpower’: Chelsea hit out at own fans for anti-Semitic chants at Europa League game https://briefnews.eu/no-brainpower-chelsea-hit-out-at-own-fans-for-anti-semitic-chants-at-europa-league-game/ https://briefnews.eu/no-brainpower-chelsea-hit-out-at-own-fans-for-anti-semitic-chants-at-europa-league-game/#respond Fri, 14 Dec 2018 10:42:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/no-brainpower-chelsea-hit-out-at-own-fans-for-anti-semitic-chants-at-europa-league-game/

Chelsea football club have condemned a section of their own fans after they were heard making anti-Semitic chants during the team’s trip to Hungary to face MOL Vidi in the Europa League.

A small group among the estimated 1,200 Chelsea fans at the Groupama Arena in Budapest were reportedly heard chanting “Barcelona, Real Madrid, Tottenham are a bunch of Yids… Yiddos,” during the early stages of Thursday night’s match.

Chelsea issued a statement condemning the taunts as “abhorrent” and accusing the fans behind them of lacking “brainpower.”

“Anti-Semitism and any kind of racial or religious hatred is abhorrent to this club and the overwhelming majority of our fans,” a spokesman said.

“It has no place at Chelsea or in any of our communities.

“Any individuals that can’t summon the brainpower to comprehend this simple message and are found to have shamed the club by used using anti-Semitic or racist words or actions will face the strongest possible action from the club.”

It comes less than a week after a group of Chelsea fans were seen hurling abuse at Manchester City striker Raheem Sterling during a Premier League encounter at Stamford Bridge.

One fan was allegedly filmed calling the England international a “f***ing black c***,” although the supporter himself has denied using those words.

Four fans were handed “indefinite bans” over that incident, which the Metropolitan Police are also investigating.

The Chelsea hierarchy are said to be furious at the latest blow to the club’s reputation in Budapest – not least because Russian owner Roman Abramovich is Jewish.

“It was a chant that Chelsea supporters have done in the past and it references Tottenham supporters using the ‘y’ word, the anti-Semitic derogatory word about Jewish people,” journalist Matt McGeehan told the BBC.

“I understand that Chelsea are angry from the top to the bottom of the club – the very top actually because owner Roman Abramovich is Jewish.

“They are furious. Not just that this has happened again to their club but because of the proximity to the incident last Saturday with Sterling.”

UEFA will await the referee’s report into Thursday’s match – which ended 2-2 – before deciding on taking any action.

In October, Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck said the club were prepared to send racist fans on educational trips to the former Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz in Poland.

“If you just ban people, you will never change their behavior,” Buck said at the time. “This policy gives them the chance to realize what they have done, to make them want to behave better.”

US Navy probes abrupt death of 5th fleet commander in Bahrain, sees ‘no foul play’ https://briefnews.eu/us-navy-probes-abrupt-death-of-5th-fleet-commander-in-bahrain-sees-no-foul-play/ https://briefnews.eu/us-navy-probes-abrupt-death-of-5th-fleet-commander-in-bahrain-sees-no-foul-play/#respond Sun, 02 Dec 2018 00:19:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-navy-probes-abrupt-death-of-5th-fleet-commander-in-bahrain-sees-no-foul-play/

The commander of US naval forces in the Middle East, Vice Adm. Scott Stearney, has been found dead at his residence in Bahrain. The US Navy investigating the Fifth Fleet chief’s death said no foul play is suspected at this point.

Stearney, who had taken over the command of the Fifth Fleet only in May, was found dead in his quarters in Bahrain on Saturday.

“The Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Bahraini Ministry of Interior are cooperating on the investigation, but at this time no foul play is suspected,” Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said in a statement, without elaborating on any circumstances surrounding Stearney’s passing.

The second-in-command of the Fifth Fleet, Rear Adm. Paul Schlise, assumed the command of US Naval Forces in the Middle East, responsible for overseeing more than 20,000 US and coalition service personnel, Richardson said.

Stearney, a Chicago native, had dedicated three decades of his life serving in the Navy, which he entered in April 1984 as an aviator. Throughout his long career, he flew F/A-18 Hornet and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet strike fighters while deployed abroad on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, USS George Washington, and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69). The 58-year-old also served as a tactics instructor at Navy Fighter Weapons School.

Operation ‘No deal’? UK army braces for Brexit chaos as May faces fierce rejection of divorce plan https://briefnews.eu/operation-no-deal-uk-army-braces-for-brexit-chaos-as-may-faces-fierce-rejection-of-divorce-plan/ https://briefnews.eu/operation-no-deal-uk-army-braces-for-brexit-chaos-as-may-faces-fierce-rejection-of-divorce-plan/#respond Mon, 19 Nov 2018 04:32:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/operation-no-deal-uk-army-braces-for-brexit-chaos-as-may-faces-fierce-rejection-of-divorce-plan/ The military is reportedly drafting contingency plans that could see British troops deployed in the streets, as the prospects of a chaotic Brexit seem increasingly realistic, with Theresa May facing a potential no-confidence vote.

“About 20 officers who normally oversee Operation Temperer… were ordered last week to step up no-deal Brexit planning,” the Sunday Times reported, citing a well-placed military source.

While Operation Temperer officers are reserved as a response to terror attacks, this time they were tasked with devising a strategy to maintain public order and secure the flow of medical supplies to hospitals. As many as 10,000 members of the military could be deployed on British streets should UK exit the EU on March 29 with no deal with Brussels.

“The armed forces stand ready to support Britain on a practical basis,” British defense minister Tobias Ellwood said on the ‘Ridge on Sunday’ television program last week. “There are contingency plans being made, there are discussions being held behind the scenes as to what support our armed forces will do.”

The army always makes “sensible contingency plans” to deal with all types of events, Chief of the Defence Staff Sir Nick Carter told the BBC last week. “At this stage I think people are confident there will be a deal, if there’s not one then we stand ready to help in any way we can.”

British society remains highly divided over Theresa May’s draft withdrawal agreement with the EU which was made public on Wednesday night and prompted the resignation of seven ministers. A YouGov poll conducted on Thursday found twice as many Britons oppose the deal as those who support it (42 to 19 percent).

Amid wide discontent with the deal, May now faces a nearly impossible challenge to get the Parliament to approve the agreement, which makes the chance of no-deal Brexit a very real possibility.

‘No proof of crime’: Dead & duct-taped Saudi sisters found on banks of Hudson could be… a suicide? https://briefnews.eu/no-proof-of-crime-dead-duct-taped-saudi-sisters-found-on-banks-of-hudson-could-be-a-suicide/ https://briefnews.eu/no-proof-of-crime-dead-duct-taped-saudi-sisters-found-on-banks-of-hudson-could-be-a-suicide/#respond Fri, 02 Nov 2018 22:11:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/no-proof-of-crime-dead-duct-taped-saudi-sisters-found-on-banks-of-hudson-could-be-a-suicide/ Two Saudi sisters found dead and duct-taped together on the banks of New York’s Hudson River were seen praying near the water hours before their bodies were found, in a baffling case that police say shows no signs of foul play.

The sisters, Rotana Farea (22) and Tala Farea (16) were discovered on October 24 on the banks of the river, having gone missing two months previously from Fairfax, Virginia, where they lived with their family. So far, the investigation has revealed that the sisters traveled from Washington DC to Philadelphia, before arriving New York City on September 1.

At a press conference on Friday, police said they had “no credible information” that any crime took place, but confirmed that their probe is ongoing. Investigators tracked the girls’ last movements using credit card records, which showed that they had “maxed out” a card staying in a number of “high end” hotels in New York, where they ordered meals for two people every day in the days leading to their deaths.

The sisters were found tied face-to-face with duct tape at the waist and feet, were fully clothed and their bodies showed no obvious signs of trauma, which likely rules out a theory that they could have jumped together from the George Washington Bridge.

Some kind of suicide is still a leading theory in the sisters’ deaths, however. Water found in their lungs made it “entirely credible” that they entered the water while still alive.

The baffling case took on an added air of mystery when it was revealed that the sisters’ mother told police that she had received a phone call from the Saudi Arabian embassy in Washington DC the day before the sisters were found. During the call, a Saudi embassy official instructed her family to leave the US, due to the fact that her daughters had applied for political asylum, she claimed.

Police also revealed that a man who frequently exercises along the riverbank told them that he had seen the girls sitting about 30 feet apart in a playground with their heads in their hands and making “praying” noises on the same day that they were later found dead – an image that the witness said has been “haunting” him since.

Tala and Rotana moved to the US with their mother in 2015. Rotana had been enrolled at George Mason University but left in the spring.

The two had previously been placed in a shelter after another disappearance in 2017, reportedly asking police not to reveal their location. On Friday, police confirmed that reports of physical abuse within the family had been made at that time, but did not elaborate.

Sources in Virginia who were not family members told the police that the sisters had said they would rather harm themselves or commit suicide than return to Saudi Arabia.

According to some media reports, 16-year-old Tala had reportedly been offered a place at a top school in Saudi Arabia but desperately did not want to go.

The Saudi consulate in New York said it had “appointed an attorney to follow the case closely,” while the Saudi embassy in Washington contacted the family and “extended its support and aid in this trying time.”
