The Buffalo Sabres selected Swedish defenceman Rasmus Dahlin with the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft on Friday night. Considered far and away the class of the 2018 talent pool, the slick 18-year-old had seven goals and 13 assists in 41 games for Frolunda of the Swedish Hockey League in 2017-18. Dahlin is the second Swedish-born player selected first overall. Mats Sundin was the top choice of the Quebec Nordiques in 1989. Dahlin also was named his country's top junior hockey player last season. The six-foot-three, 185-pound Dahlin was honoured as the top blue liner at the 2018 world junior championship in Buffalo, registering six assists in seven games. He also played twice for his country as a 17-year-old at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The Carolina Hurricanes, selecting second, took Russian-born Barrie Colts winger Andrei Svechnikov. The Montreal Canadiens, the first Canadian team to pick, took Finnish centre Jesperi Kotkaniemi with the No. 3 selection. The Ottawa Senators then selected Boston University winger Brady Tkachuk, the son of ex-NHLer Keith Tkachuk, at No. 4. The Arizona Coyotes selected the first Canadian-born player in the draft, grabbing Barrett Hayton of Peterborough, Ont., with the fifth pick. The centre plays for the OHL's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Prior to the start of the draft, NHL commissioner presented the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos with the E.J. McGuire Award of Excellence. The Broncos were on their way to Nipawin for a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoff game on April 6 when their bus collided with a truck, resulting in the deaths of 16 people, including 10 players. Created in 2015, the E.J. McGuire Award of Excellence is given annually by the league to the draft candidate who exemplifies commitment to excellence through strength of character, competitiveness and athleticism. "From this tragedy, the hockey world has come to learn more about the Humboldt Broncos organization and players, their role in the fabric of their community, and their commitment to the pursuit of excellence both on and off the ice," Dan Marr, director of NHL Central Scouting, said in a statement. "The stories we have heard about those who were lost and those who continue to heal have been truly inspirational and serve as great examples of all the characteristics this award was meant to recognize." The celebratory Atlantic Division T-shirts were draped neatly over each player’s chair in the post-game locker-room. The Toronto Raptors barely glanced at them. On an historic night they clinched the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, won the division title, and set a franchise record for regular-season wins, there was no celebrating. The Raptors were only looking forward. “Journey’s not over. Next question,” Kyle Lowry put it bluntly, on their regular-season accomplishments. Serge Ibaka scored a season-high 25 points to lift the Raptors to a 92-73 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Friday, Toronto’s 57th win of the season, and 33rd at the Air Canada Centre. Both topped the previous franchise highs set in the 2015-16 season. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Cavaliers fell 132-130 to the Philadelphia 76ers, making it more likely that Toronto will meet nemesis LeBron James in the second round. The Raptors (57-22) have three games left in the regular season before they embark on their fifth consecutive post-season, and coach Dwane Casey said now is not the time for reflection. “It’s gratification but you’re not satisfied, that’s the way I like to put it,” Casey said. “We haven’t got to where our ultimate goal is.” DeMar DeRozan added 12 points, while Jakob Poeltl finished with 10, and Lowry doled out nine assists. Glenn Robinson had 12 points, Trevor Booker finished 11 points, and Canadian and former Raptors guard Cory Joseph scored six off the bench for the Pacers (47-33). Playing in their Drake-inspired black and gold OVO jerseys, the Raptors led from the opening tipoff and, other than a second-quarter blip when they allowed the Pacers to pull within four points, they dominated for most of the night in front of a capacity Air Canada Centre crowd that included Drake. They pulled away in the third quarter thanks largely to Ibaka, who shot a perfect 5-for-5 — including a pair of three-pointers — that put the Raptors ahead by 27 points. They took a 72-49 lead into the fourth. The sizable lead allowed Casey to go to his bench for the final frame, giving the starters some much-appreciated rest before the playoffs begin on April 14. A pair of Robinson threes midway through the fourth pulled the Pacers to within 17, but the visitors couldn’t put a significant dent in Toronto’s lead. As the clock ticked down the final seconds, the ACC crowd stood and applauded the Raptors’ regular-season record. DeRozan said achieving the No. 1 seed shows “that once you put your mind toward something, work toward a goal, it can be accomplished. “We did that. Now, we’ve got another goal that we want to reach as well,” DeRozan said. “So this gives us the confidence that we can do it and take it to another level.” The Raptors’ magic number on the night was one — either a Toronto win or Boston loss Friday clinched them the No. 1 seed, and home court for the duration of the Eastern Conference playoffs. The regular season played out in a series of step-by-step goals, DeRozan said, finally culminating in earning the top seed. “That’s one of those goals that you fight for, you strive for,” he said. “That’s what motivates you, is to get there and understand you took care of business. We’ve got home court advantage throughout the playoffs so let’s use that to our advantage. Little things, step by step, that’s how we look at it.” Casey scoffed when questioned about potentially resting players down the regular-season stretch, saying the team is only now rediscovering its rhythm after a handful of poor performances. “That’s bullcrap. If you’ve been around the last couple of years, you’ve seen what totally shutting guys down for a few games does to their body,” Casey said. “You may rest a guy a few minutes, or whatever a game, but there won’t be anybody that’s going to be taking the rest of these next few games off, because we’re just now these last couple of games have got a sense of rhythm. “So, what rest? I don’t know what guys’ minutes tonight were . . . Kyle was 28. What rest?” A solid defensive effort saw the Raptors hold Indy to 22 per cent shooting in the first quarter and, when Poeltl scored on a reverse layup with less than a minute to go, Toronto went ahead by 17 points. The Raptors took a 26-14 lead into the second quarter. The Pacers cut Toronto’s lead to just four points with a 10-0 run midway through the second, but a three by Lowry capped a mini Raptors run that sent them into halftime up 45-33. The Raptors host Orlando on Sunday in their last regular-season home game.

The ICC released its updated rankings one day after confirming Rabada’s two-Test ban, which will force him to miss the rest of the four-Test series against Australia that is currently level at 1-1.
The Proteas are yet to reveal whether they will appeal the code-of-conduct charge resulting from Rabada’s physical contact with Steve Smith on day one of the second Test.
Cricket South Africa is seeking legal advice and is set to confirm on Wednesday (EDT) whether it is lodging an appeal.
Rabada reclaimed top spot on the ICC’s Test bowling charts after claiming 11-150 in Port Elizabeth, a man-of-the-match effort that included a stack of key wickets at clutch moments.
The 22-year-old is now 15 points above England veteran Jimmy Anderson on the rankings, with fifth-placed Josh Hazlewood the top-ranked Australian.
South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis suggested Rabada still has room for improvement.
“A lot has been said about KG’s amazing rise,” du Plessis said.
“I honestly still think KG will get better. I’m really excited to see what’s going to happen in his future.
“He’s got the best strike-rate in the world (of any current player). I don’t think you have to say too much more.
“To have him in your side as a captain is a huge pleasure.
“Both teams have very high class reverse-swing bowlers but what makes KG so special for me is he does it both ways at pace … and he doesn’t give a lot of bad balls away.”

Investopedia
Investopedia, the online glossary of terms you were probably too embarrassed to admit you didn’t actually know, has ten times the amount of retirement content as it does about bitcoin.
However, more visitors to the eighteen-year-old site were reading about bitcoin than retirement in 2017 — a number that’s doubling every single month, CEO David Siegel told Business Insider. The numbers were so astonishing that the site had to hire a full time editor for the space.
“We launched the term bitcoin in August 2011 — that was really early,” Siegel told Business Insider in an interview. “We launched the term blockchain in June 2014, so we were also early into blockchain too, but we were ridiculously early to bitcoin.”
That preparedness has helped the site, which was purchased by InterActive Corp. for $ 80 million in 2013, to rank first — or close to first — for most searches containing bitcoin.
Not surprisingly, blockchain and ICOs aren’t far behind bitcoin on the list. Siegel, who worked at DoubleClick during the heyday of the 90’s dotcom bubble, is much more bullish on the former rather than the later.
“People talk about bitcoin, and often they talk about crypto, but really the amazing thing is blockchain,” he said. “Blockchain is the infrastructure that makes everything happen.”
Cyptocurrencies are a much different story.
“So many new terms are coming up regarding this, like potcoin. There’s even a new coin out there called the shitcoin” Siegel said. “I don’t know how much more these cryptocurrencies are going to grow, but they will continue to grow with accelerated growth for some period of time — and then there’s going to be a massive crash. Now that crash could still end up 200%-300% up from where it was a couple years ago, which is still incredible, but it’s dangerous for people who are coming right into it, because they will not be up the same amount.
“In my mind, it’s not question of if, it’s just a question of when that will happen.”
Here’s the full list of Investopedia’s top terms on its site in 2017, with commentary from Siegel:
“With baby boomers and Gen Xers in retirement or rapidly approaching it, millennials are about to witness the largest wealth transfer in history, bringing major changes to traditional investing tactics and retirement planning.
“With thanks to Professor Richard Thaler, a key proponent of behavioral economics, this term jumped back into the spotlight when Thaler won the 2017 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his development of the nudge theory.
“A subset of socially responsible investing, impact investing aims to generate not only financial gain but also social and environmental benefits. As millennials continue to increase their wealth and start investing, they are increasingly interested in aligning their money with their values. This has catalyzed investment management firms to build new funds and products to cater to their new customers’ needs.
“One of the buzziest words in 2017, firms across all industries are talking about adopting machine learning and artificial intelligence. While 2017 was the year of building AI technology, 2018 will be the year the industry sees it in application.
“This is the newest European regulation that financial firms must comply with by January 3, 2018. Financial services firms are spending tens of millions of dollars to adapt to these new regulations, which are designed to make investing safer and more transparent.
“President Trump made repealing Obamacare one of his top priorities as he attempted to pass his Trumpcare bill three times. While Obamacare still lives to fight another day, the administration is attempting to roll back key parts of the Affordable Healthcare Act through the latest tax reform plan and other measures.
“With celebrity endorsers like DJ Khaled and Paris Hilton, ICO’s have been one of the most talked about terms not only in the financial space, but in the mainstream media, as well. While more than three billion dollars has been raised in ICOs, the SEC and other regulatory bodies have cracked down on the offerings. Despite this, investment flows have not slowed amidst the bitcoin boom.
“This new term was coined by Jim Cramer to represent the top performing stocks in the market, Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google (Alphabet). These five companies continue to dominate financial headlines as their market caps race to $ 1 Trillion.
“Wall Street might write bitcoin off as all hype, but blockchain is poised to disrupt multiple industries. In 2017, CB Insights reported that more than $ 327 million was invested in blockchain start-ups this year, with major backing from major brands such as Google, Goldman Sachs and Citi.
“$ 8,000! $ 11,000! $ 20,000?! 2017 was the year of bitcoin mania. The cryptocurrency started the year at $ 1,000 and since then, has risen more than 1500%. While some say bitcoin is a bubble, its aggressive growth has dominated the minds of the media and the financial services sector. 2017 saw the first bitcoin billionaires as well as the introduction of bitcoin futures. With only 1,000 users owning more than 40% of the currency, according to some reports, investors are carefully watching if the price will fall or continue to rally.
]]>As the US political-media complex continues to saturate the American psyche with the bad seed of Russophobia, harassing anyone who dares deviate from the narrative, Cohen, of New York and Princeton Universities, is one of the few scholars bucking the trend.
In his latest contribution in a lengthy series of articles published in the Nation, Cohen argues that Russia fails to make it among the top-five threats facing the United States today.
Cohen begins by arguing that ever since the late 1940s, the single “existential duty” of every US president has been to avoid “the possibility of war with Russia.” The reason is obvious: the risk of touching off a “conflagration that could result in the end of modern civilization.”
According to Cohen, Donald Trump is the first US leader who has lost those critical presidential powers due to the dissemination of “still unverified but ever-more-persistent allegations” that Trump somehow colluded with the Kremlin to steal the 2016 presidential elections from Hillary Clinton.
It is that accusation, which has dogged the American public – not to mention the White house – for over a year, that Cohen ranks as the “number-one threat” confronting America today.
The professor roundly criticized the ongoing spate of warmongering found not only in the mainstream media, but in the halls of power as well.
Referencing a comment by Democratic Senator Ben Cardin, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s ranking member, who described the allegations of ‘Russian election meddling’ as a “political Pearl Harbor,” Cohen asked, “What could be more reckless than to insist that we are already at war with the other nuclear superpower?”
The diplomatic breakdown between the two countries hit rock bottom in August when the US forced Russia to close its consulate in San Francisco and cut back its diplomatic staff in Washington and New York. The tit-for-tat move came in response to Moscow announcing the US would have to scale back its embassy and consulate personnel in Russia by 755, months after the Obama administration expelled 35 Russian diplomats and closed Russian property over the claim that Moscow had meddled in the 2016 US elections.
On the point of Vladimir Putin and the Western establishment’s ongoing efforts to place him in practically the same category as of Hitler, Cohen calls wave of attacks “unprecedented.”
“No Soviet or post-Soviet leader was ever so wildly, baselessly vilified as Putin has increasingly been for more than a decade—and even more since a few selected members of a few US intelligence agencies claimed in January 2017, without making known any evidence whatsoever, that he personally ordered the ‘attack on America’,” Cohen wrote.
Always in the background of Cohen’s commentary is the reminder that we are living in the nuclear age, a fact that makes bilateral cooperation between Moscow and Washington an absolute imperative. Yet thanks to the allegations of ‘Russiagate’, which some Republicans and Trump himself say were concocted to explain Hillary Clinton’s loss, as well as conceal numerous skeletons in the Democratic closet, Putin has been characterized as a “master villain in the Kremlin.”
“Despite the ongoing bashing of the Russian leader, the result has been that Vladimir Putin, the ‘national-security partner most needed by Washington’, has been effectively delegitimized.”
The loss of Russia as a reliable US partner represents a massive setback in the fight against real global baddies, foremost among them Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), which Cohen said would be the “number one [threat] if the US political-media establishment had not conjured up the preceding ones.”
But the nuclear issue is also of key importance here, according to the scholar.
“The high-alert/hair-trigger status of American and Russian nuclear weapons is an accident waiting to happen,” which requires Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to negotiate “an end to that perilous status,” he wrote.
Cohen wraps up his article with a short explanation as to why Russia does not feature on his list of US threats.
“Russia… represents no threat to the United States at all (apart from a nuclear accident or miscalculation), except those Washington and NATO have themselves created. Meanwhile, the “expanding alliance between Russia and China,” symptomatic of “unwise” US policy, is a “separate subject.”

Jillaroos first-choice No.1 Bremner is racing the clock to be fit for Saturday’s final against New Zealand after missing Sunday’s semi-final win over Canada due to a niggling leg injury.
Bremner got through the side’s training run the day prior but ruled herself out because she believed she wasn’t yet 100 per cent.
Coach Brad Donald is faced with a cut-throat decision whether to include his star Bremner, or whether to stick with Redfern-based Davis-Welsh, who has been a standout since debuting in the tournament opener.
“Not really,” Davis-Welsh told AAP when asked if she would feel hard done by if she was omitted for the final.
“Sammy’s a great person on and off the field. She was really supportive of me, so no matter what I’d be happy.
“Brad’s a really good coach and he knows what he’s doing and whatever he does will be best for the team.”
Davis-Welsh came onto the Jillaroos’ radar as a 16-year-old when she debuted as a five-eighth for the Indigenous All Stars in 2013 and said she had dreamed of a spot in the national side ever since.
She has scored in all three of her Test appearances during the World Cup and on Sunday against Canada ran for a game-high 202 metres in a brilliant performance punctuated by a scorching solo four-pointer.
Even if Bremner does return against the Kiwi Ferns in Brisbane on Saturday, Davis-Welsh is versatile enough to slot in at centre or on the wing.
She has played on the wing outside of Bremner for NSW the past two years and said she would be content no matter the number on her back.
“Even if (Bremner) came back for this, it wouldn’t make a difference because I love wing as well. I’d still be back there with her for the kicks,” Davis-Welsh said.
“Just being here – I’d be stoked even if I was on the bench.”

Rafael Nadal during his loss to Canada’s Denis Shapovalov.
CANADIAN teenager Denis Shapovalov has stunned top seeded Rafael Nadal to reach the quarter-finals of the ATP Montreal Masters tournament, spoiling the Spaniard’s chances of returning to world No.1.
The 18-year-old Shapovalov, who needed a wild card to get into the tournament, continued his giant killing form at the hardcourt tournament by rallying to beat Nadal in three sets, 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-4) on Thursday.
Nadal would have returned to No. 1 in the world if he had defeated Shapovalov on Thursday and Chung Hyeon or Adrian Mannarino on Friday.
The defeat means injured Brit Andy Murray will hold on to top spot for now, but Roger Federer — still alive in Montreal after a three-set win over David Ferrer — has a chance to significantly close the gap on Murray and world No.2 Nadal.

Tennis: Young guns Nick Kyrgios and Alexander Zverev were entertaining as always, as they did battle in the 3rd round of the Canadian Open.
Shapovalov’s stunning upset against the reigning French Open champion came as a result of some inspired tennis in front of a boisterous home crowd who cheered his every shot.
Shapovalov had just three wins this season coming into the tournament. He quickly got on a roll in Montreal beating Brazil’s Rogerio Dutra Silva in the opening round 4-6, 7-6 (10-8) 6-4. He defeated former US Open winner Juan Martin Del Potro in the second round in straight sets 6-3 7-6 (7-4) to set up the showdown with Nadal.
Shapovalov won seven of the final eight points of the third set tiebreaker before closing out the match with a forehand winner down the line. He celebrated by falling onto his back then covering his face with his hands.
Shapovalov blasted a total of nine aces, including ones on his second serve that handcuffed Nadal. He also had seven double faults and won 67 percent of his first serve points.
Nadal won 77 percent of his first serve points but had just two aces and six double faults in the two hour, 45 minute center court match.

Tennis: Roger Federer has moved through to the quarter finals in Montreal after beating David Ferrer in 3 sets.

Corporate America is out of touch.
A majority of Americans believe that corporations are headed in the wrong direction, and that business leaders do not understand the challenges they face.
The biggest question in corporate America right now is how to change that. For some, increased regulation is the answer, while others propose deregulation. There’s the potential for public pressure, through marches, protests, and media attention.
Just Capital, a nonprofit organization set up by legendary hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones, is taking a different tack: using data to educate Americans on the companies that are “just.”
“It’s exciting because we’re trying to focus on outcomes of non-traditional performance criteria,” says Just Capital CEO Martin Whittaker. “But to do good, you’ve got to harness the forces of capitalism. You cannot always rely on philanthropy.”
Just Capital’s declared mission is to “improve company performance on the issues Americans care about most.” The nonprofit pursues that mission through the publishing of a “JUST 100 List,” which ranks the best performing companies in thirty-two different industries based on the American public’s priorities. Some of the industry leaders were Microsoft in software, Silicon Valley Bank in banking, and Southwest in transportation.
“I view markets as a force for good. Steering capital to improve companies’ behavior is the best way to improve society,” says Whittaker. “I believe capital will flow to corporations that are more just, ultimately leading to a balanced business world that takes into account human needs that are so often neglected today.”
REUTERS/Eduardo MunozThe organization also partners with other groups to develop projects such as the “Data Challenge for America,” a project being launched with The Data Incubator aimed at finding new ways “data science can help create a more just economy that better serves the broader best interests of the country.”
But defining exactly what is “just” is no easy task. Just Capital’s stance is that Americans should be the ones who define the term, so they conduct an annual, multi-phase survey with NORC at the University of Chicago and other specialty polling and survey organizations to determine what corporate issues are most relevant to Americans.
The survey encompasses more than 50,000 participants. As a measuring stick, consider that the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly unemployment figures are based on a survey of 60,000 households.
According to the nonprofit’s research, workers’ pay and benefits was a leading issue that participants cared most about. Worker treatment and other workplace related issues polled generally polled ahead of other issues like environmental impact.
“We want to explore all angles. Leave no stone unturned. Capture an accurate reflection of the American sentiment,” says Whittaker.
According to Whittaker, a sample size that large allows the data to accurately reflect the preferences of several different demographics including retirees, millennials, and both low and high income, and left and right leaning individuals. Whittaker also believes this type of data is of interest to the groups that are central to their mission.
That’s in part because Americans do want to do business with “just companies.” The majority of survey participants across all income levels expressed interest in buying from, working for, or investing in companies based on their “justness.”
“We know companies want data on this, both on themselves and on their competition, and they want to get better,” says Whittaker. “At the end of the day, that’s whose behavior we are trying to influence. We’re trying to create a race to the top.”

Surfing: Owen Wright has completed an incredible return to the World Surfing Tour, taking out the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast .. in his first tour event after a traumatic year off.
Owen Wright in action at the Quiksliver Pro.
THIS time a year ago Owen Wright could barely walk or talk and couldn’t surf at all.
On Sunday the likeable Aussie surfer did something many, including himself, wondered if he would ever do again — raised his arm in triumph.
“It could have taken me out forever,’’ Wright said of the brain injury he sustained in a horrific wipeout at Pipeline on December 20, 2015, which left his speech, balance and movement impaired. “It’s a cliche, but this really is a dream.
“There were a lot of fears to push through to get back into the sport that pretty much took me out, and could’ve taken me out forever, and to have that final with one of my best mates, I’m just over the moon.”

Wright, a new dad, said he feels like a “lucky’’ man.
“There are so many good things in my life right now. My past is my past,’’ Wright said,
“I feel like I am a better person for what I have been through.’’
Wright was chaired up the beach by surfer brother Mickey and world champion sister Tyler in tears after his defeat of best mate Wilkinson in the final.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling to have been in that final with Owen,’’ Wilkinson said,.
