Valentina Palladino NEW YORK—Upon walking into a gray, bricked-facade gallery in Manhattan’s Chelsea area, color immediately flooded my eyes. LEGO chose an unassuming location to show off some of the more than 100 new sets coming out in time for the 2018 holiday season. The company literally took the blank canvas of the gallery’s interior and splashed it with colorful bricks, some waiting patiently in buckets begging to be dumped out and some built into magical express trains, massive starfighters, and working roller coaster replicas. As an avid LEGO fan for years (I had my father’s old LEGO bricks to play with as a kid), I’m always struck by the hundreds of new sets that come out each year. According to Amanda Madore, senior brand relations manager at LEGO, the company constantly tries to spice things up in new sets with various levels of intricacy. While some builders are perfectly content sitting down for a few hours with a 1,000-piece set, others want a burst of building that’s just as fun and yields almost instant gratification. Also, some fans can’t afford to drop hundreds on a huge LEGO set and that’s where new forms like Brick Headz come in.

(Welcome to Not Dead Yet, a feature dedicated to what’s new on Blu-ray and what special features you should be excited about. Because yes, some of us still like to own physical copies of our movies.)
We’re almost there, folks! 2017 is almost at an end, and as we burn through the holiday season, it’s time to kick back and catch up on some new films you might’ve missed in theaters. That’s where good old Blu-rays come in. Yes, that’s right – there’s more to movies than streaming. Pretty sure I mentioned that before. I’ve put together a jam-packed new Blu-ray round-up for you to close out the year. There’s a lot of good stuff here, including one of Christopher Nolan’s best films; a polarizing horror movie from Darren Aronofsky; a surprisingly honest biopic; a harrowing Kathryn Bigelow drama based on a true story; yet another one of those dang Lego movies; a spy sequel; and a true crime miniseries. Here are the new Blu-ray releases you should check out this week.
Christopher Nolan crafts one of his most meticulous films with Dunkirk, a war movie that’s less about fighting and more about survival. Nolan draws on the real-life Battle of Dunkirk, and the mad-dash to evacuate trapped British soldiers that followed, building a three-pronged narrative set on land, sea and air. At first, these three threads seem as if they’re independent of one another, but slowly and surely, Nolan draws them all together until they merge into one complete story.
This is one of Nolan’s best films, and a perfect example of his ever-evolving technical abilities. Few filmmakers right now are working on a scale this large, with this type of commitment to the craft. That said, Dunkirk won’t be for everyone. It’s a surprisingly abstract movie – long stretches unfold with little to no dialogue, and a good portion of the soldiers are interchangeable, character-wise. Yet the film also has stellar turns from actors like Mark Rylance, playing a good-hearted hero, and Tom Hardy, playing a cool-as-ice Spitfire pilot.
Nolan shot a huge portion of Dunkirk with IMAX cameras, and while this technique worked magnificently on the big screen, it calls attention to itself a bit too much on Blu-ray. Whenever a scene switches to IMAX, the frame on your TV will expand. It can be distracting now and then, but not detrimentally so. All in all, Dunkirk is one of the year’s best films, and Nolan fans will surely want to snap this Blu-ray release up.
Special Features To Note: Of all the new Blu-ray releases this week, Dunkirk is the top pick. There’s a wealth of mini-documentary features that cover nearly every element of the production of Dunkirk. Nolan is one of those filmmakers who will likely never do a director’s commentary again, so if you’re looking for his insight into the filmmaking process as a whole, these features are a goldmine. Nolan gives a breakdown of how he approached the film both technically and thematically, and it’s clear this whole project was a labor of love.
A good portion of this is devoted to shooting the film with the huge IMAX cameras. “Dunkirk is a huge story, and it demanded an enormous canvas,” Nolan says of shooting in the large format. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema talks about how he worked to make the clunky IMAX cameras as handheld as possible, which was very physically demanding. There’s also footage of van Hoytema sitting in the cockpit of a real plane as it zooms and rolls through the air, giving the cinematographer a chance to figure out how to shoot the aerial battles.
Nolan and company worked to create as many of the film’s special effects in-camera rather than than relying on CGI. The crew talks about how Nolan would rather use no visual effects at all if possible, and when he has to, it’ll always be a combination of practical effects mixed in with CGI. The features here are an overall thorough look at the creation of the film.
Special Features Include:
I don’t think anyone could have predicted that Darren Aronofsky’s mother! would end up being one of the most divisive films of the year, but here we are. An utterly bonkers examination of toxic men who see their female muses as objects for their own personal benefit and little else, mother! is a trippy, shocking, nasty horror movie that starts off like a home invasion thriller and then descends into utter chaos.
Jennifer Lawrence plays a woman who wants nothing more than to fix up her husband’s old family home while said husband (played by Javier Bardem) works on his writing. Things go quickly awry, however, when a stranger (Ed Harris) shows up at the front door and ends up staying the night. The next day, the stranger’s wife (a gloriously wicked Michelle Pfeiffer) arrives, and things get even worse. From here you can sort of guess where mother! is going, but just when you assume you have this story figured out, Aronofsky pulls the rug out from under you and unleashes hell.
But does it work? There’s no clear answer to that. Some people loved the fever dream that Aronofsky was selling here, while others thought this flick was an abomination. As for me, I’m somewhere in the middle. I appreciate how fucking nuts this movie is, and how committed Aronofsky is to making the madness increase with every single moment, but I also think the film doesn’t quite come together the way it should. Part of the problem is Lawrence – a talented actress who is nonetheless wrong for this part. Yet for all its flaws, mother! is so unlike anything else you’ve seen in some time that it’s hard not to commend the film for daring to be weird.
Special Features To Note: This would definitely be my second pick for all the new Blu-ray releases of the week. You just have to see this movie. The documentary mother! The Downward Spiral tracks the making of Aronofsky’s film, from conception to rehearsal to filming. Aronofsky says here that he wanted to “make something that’s very grounded but then slowly lifts out of realism as the film progresses,” and he certainly achieved that.
We learn through this feature that Aronofsky and the cast actually spent three months rehearsing the film, and Aronofsky went so far as to film the entire rehearsal. That is a long time for rehearsal for a film; it’s the type of thing one tends to do for a play, not a motion picture.
Cinematographer Matthew Libatique points out an element of the film that many may miss: almost the entire movie is shot with three distinct angles: one, over Jennifer Lawrence’s shoulder; two, a close-up of Lawrence from the neck up, “because you’re not conscious of your body when you’re walking around,” says Libatique; and three, via a point of view shot. This is the language of the film, and it helps to put us almost entirely within Lawrence’s headspace.
The only other feature is The Makeup FX of mother!, which details the creation of some of the nastier, gorier effects in the film, including a blown-off face, a toilet monster, a burnt-to-a-crisp body, and a robot baby. Like I said the movie is weird. My only complaint with this release: there are no features here that teach you how to brace a sink.

Not too long ago, we highlighted a new featurette for The LEGO Ninjago Movie that took us behind the scenes of the animated spin-off to The LEGO Movie. We got to meet the cast, see some improvisation done during dialogue recording, and see new footage from the movie. Now we get a different kind of glimpse behind the scenes, this time within the world of the movie itself.
A new fully animated featurette takes audiences “behind the bricks” of The LEGO Ninjago Movie, guided by the characters in the movie as if they were the real actors bringing the story to life. Not only does it provide some amusing introductions for the film’s characters, but it shows off a bunch of new footage from the movie as well.
There doesn’t seem to be as much hype around this movie as there should be, but I feel like this will fit right in line with the cleverness and originality of both The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Batman Movie.
Dave Franco stars as Lloyd, the green ninja and leader of the crew of Spinjitzu warriors, each given a special ability that only they have mastered. The team working with him includes Michael Peña as Kai, Fred Armisen as Cole, Kumail Nanjiani as Jay, Abbi Jacobson as Nya and Zach Woods as the robot Zane, and they’re all taking on Justin Theroux as the villain Garmadon (who also happens to by Lloyd’s father), who has a bone to pick with Jackie Chan‘s Master Wu, his nemesis.
The LEGO Ninjago Movie is co-directed by Charlie Bean, Paul Fisher and Bob Logan with a screenplay that the latter directors wrote with William Wheeler & Tom Wheeler and Jared Stern & John Wittington. The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord & Chris Miller produced the film with franchise producers Roy Lee, Chris McKay and Dan Lin, along with Maryann Garger.

In this big-screen NINJAGO adventure, the battle for NINJAGO City calls to action young Master Builder Lloyd, aka the Green Ninja, along with his friends, who are all secret ninja warriors. Led by Master Wu, as wise-cracking as he is wise, they must defeat evil warlord Garmadon, The Worst Guy Ever, who also happens to be Lloyd’s dad. Pitting mech against mech and father against son, the epic showdown will test this fierce but undisciplined team of modern-day ninjas who must learn to check their egos and pull together to unleash their inner power of Spinjitzu.

Though there doesn’t seem to be as much pomp and circumstance surrounding The LEGO Ninjago Movie as there was The LEGO Movie and the spin-off The LEGO Batman Movie, the more I see of the latest expansion of the LEGO cinematic universe, the more excited I get to see it.
The LEGO Ninjago Movie takes a cue from the LEGO building brick set of the same name, which has already spawned an animated series. But this feature adaptation has no narrative ties to the animated series, which means audiences of all ages can go into the movie without having to know anything except that this is another clever LEGO movie with a fantastic voice cast behind it. The LEGO Ninjago Movie featurette that was just released online goes behind the scenes with the cast, reveals new footage and shows a surprising amount of improvisation for an animated movie.
The LEGO Ninjago Movie features the voices of Dave Franco as Lloyd, the Green ninja and leader of the crew of Spinjitzu warriors who each have their own special ability. The team includes Michael Peña as Kai, Fred Armisen as Cole, Kumail Nanjiani as Jay, Abbi Jacobson as Nya and Zach Woods as the robot Zane, and they’re all features in this featurette along with Justin Theroux as the villain Garmadon (who also happens to by Lloyd’s father) and Jackie Chan as his nemesis Master Wu.
It’s surprising to see two things in this behind the scenes featurette. First of all, usually animated movies have the actors record all their lines separately, by themselves in a recording booth, and the dialogue only comes together in the final edit of the movie. But for The LEGO Ninjago Movie, there were some recording sessions featuring all the primary cast members together. Even more surprising is the amount of improvisation allowed during these recording sessions. Since the animation of the mouths on the LEGO characters is far more simple to change throughout production, that likely allows for more freedom in the dialogue.

There have been more and more LEGO sets tied in with movies in recent years, especially since The LEGO Movie sparked a whole cinematic universe of movies featuring the building block toys. With The LEGO Ninjago Movie arriving in September, there’s a brand new line of LEGO sets bringing several vehicles, settings and all the characters from the movie, but none are quite as impressive as one particular set.
Ninjago City is just one of several LEGO sets that will be released in September in conjunction with the release of The LEGO Ninjago Movie, but it’s the one that deserves the most recognition because it’s the third largest LEGO set ever released to the public. Get a better glimpse at the Ninjago City LEGO set below.
The Ninjago City LEGO set has 4,867 pieces, putting it behind the Ultimate Collector’s Series edition of the Millennium Falcon and the Taj Mahal for highest piece count. It also comes with nearly 20 minifigures. With a style similar to the LEGO Creator modular buildings like the Palace Movie Theater and the Ghostbusters firehouse, Ninjago City could make a nice addition to a larger diorama.
The bad news is that this LEGO set will cost you $ 299.99 if you want to add it to your LEGO collection. It will be available on shelves and at The LEGO Shop online starting on September 1st.

Everyone who enjoyed The LEGO Movie saw the animated building brick world become even bigger with The LEGO Batman Movie earlier this year. Now it will expand into a totally different arena with yet another LEGO branded adventure.
The LEGO Ninjago Movie takes one of the building brick company’s most popular toylines, one that already has its own animated series on TV, and brings the action to the big screen with a completely new story and an all-star comedy cast. A new trailer debuted during San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, and it has the same humor and creativity as the previous LEGO movies. Watch it below!
Unlike The LEGO Batman Movie, this new LEGO adventure doesn’t really have any ties to The LEGO Movie, though it seems to live in the same imaginative universe, albeit in a completely different part of that world. The movie also stands independently from The LEGO Ninjago TV series that already exists, so it’s accessible for people of all ages.
Easily the best part of the trailer is the introduction of a new villain, a real “giant” cat named Meowthra. Clearly there will be a riff on the kaiju monsters from cinema’s history when this cat starts wreaking havoc on the city. It also plays into the dichotomy between the LEGO world and the real world that exists around them, as we saw in The LEGO Movie.
Apparently the cat isn’t the only element that will be real in the movie, because producer Dan Lin said during a Comic-Con panel this weekend that there would be real grass, water and trees in the movie, and maybe some other surprise real world elements that pop up. Lin said, “Like in the first one, you had the Kragle, and you’ll see we’ve taken that to the next level.”
Dave Franco, Michael Pena, Zach Woods, Fred Armisen, Kumail Nanjiani and Abbi Jacobson all lend their voices as the ninja ensemble, but Franco’s character does the heavy lifting since his father is the villain Lord Garmadon (voiced by Justin Theroux). But the ninjas will get hep from Master Wu, voiced by Jackie Chan, who also worked with a martial arts team to perform action sequences that will be animated over for the movie.
The LEGO Ninjago Movie is directed by Charlie Bean (Tron: Uprising) with The LEGO Movie‘s Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Dan Lin, and Roy Lee serving as producers.

The new trailer marks the third film in the hilarious LEGO movie franchise, after The LEGO Batman Movie and 2014’s The LEGO Movie.
Based on the popular Ninjago LEGO toys, video games and TV series, the new movie focuses on Ninjas in a modern setting.
The first LEGO Ninjago Movie trailer comes with the same tongue-in-cheek humour as the other two films, which will no doubt please fans.
Express.co.uk was fortunate enough to sit down for an exclusive interview with LEGO Batman himself, Will Arnett, who confirmed he will be back for The LEGO Movie 2.
The official synopsis of The LEGO Ninjago Movie reads: “In this big-screen Ninjago adventure, the battle for Ninjago City calls to action young Lloyd [Dave Franco], aka the Green Ninja, along with his friends, who are all secret warriors and LEGO Master Builders.
Led by kung fu master Wu [Jackie Chan], as wise-cracking as he is wise, they must defeat evil warlord Garmadon [Justin Theroux], the Worst Guy Ever, who also happens to be Lloyd’s dad.
“Pitting mech against mech and father against son, the epic showdown will test this fierce but undisciplined team of modern-day ninjas who must learn to check their egos and pull together to unleash their true power.”
The movie follows the short film, The Master, which was screened before Storks last year.
The new film stars Dave Franco, Justin Theroux, Fred Armisen, Abbi Jacobson, Olivia Munn, Kumail Nanjiani, Michael Peña, Zach Woods, and the legendary Jackie Chan.
The LEGO Ninjago Movie will be released in UK cinemas on October 13, 2017.
