On a quarterly financial call Wednesday afternoon, Tesla CEO Elon Musk briefly spoke about a new lawsuit filed by Nikola Motor Company, a Salt Lake City-based hydrogen fuel cell truck startup. Musk said it was a “laughable lawsuit from some company called ‘Nikola.'”

Whatever the merits of the lawsuit itself, large shipping companies like US Xpress and Ryder think Nikola Motor Company is more than just “some company.” Now, it seems, Anheuser-Busch, one of the largest beer producers in the US and a subsidiary of multinational conglomerate AB InBev, is getting on the Nikola truck train, too. On Thursday, Anheuser-Busch announced that it would buy a sizable 800 hydrogen fuel cell trucks from Nikola Motor company to be delivered between 2020 and 2025.

Like Tesla, Nikola has yet to deliver a zero-tailpipe-emissions truck to a customer. Unlike Tesla, the company has not yet delivered any kind of mass-produced vehicle to a customer at all.

Anheuser-Busch orders up to 800 Nikola hydrogen-fueled big rigs https://briefnews.eu/anheuser-busch-orders-up-to-800-nikola-hydrogen-fueled-big-rigs/ https://briefnews.eu/anheuser-busch-orders-up-to-800-nikola-hydrogen-fueled-big-rigs/#respond Fri, 04 May 2018 00:18:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/anheuser-busch-orders-up-to-800-nikola-hydrogen-fueled-big-rigs/

Budweiser beer maker Anheuser-Busch said on Thursday it reserved up to 800 hydrogen-fueled semi-trucks from Nikola Motor Company as part of plans to convert its dedicated long-haul fleet to renewable powered trucks by 2025.

The order would be large when compared to pre-orders so far for Tesla Inc’s all-electric Semi and is further evidence that fleets needing to move cargo hundreds of miles are willing to give nascent, costlier technologies a try.

Truck makers such as Daimler AG, Navistar International and its partner Volkswagen AG are also investing in electric models in a bet that the market will shift over the next decade.

Anheuser-Busch expects to integrate the trucks into its fleet beginning in 2020, it said, but both companies declined to say how much if anything Anheuser-Busch plunked down to reserve the trucks or how many would ultimately be added to the beer maker’s network.

Salt Lake City, Utah-based Nikola said its trucks will have a range of between 500-1,200 miles and take about 20 minutes to re-fuel, shaving minutes off the average time it takes to fuel up a diesel rig.

Time-tested diesel trucks are capable of traveling up to 1,000 miles on a single tank of fuel and cost about $ 150,000 on average.

Nikola said it plans to charge $ 400,000 on average for its trucks, but tractors can be leased as well. Truck leasing firm Ryder System Inc will be providing the dealer network for sales and service, Nikola said. Ryder did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Nikola Chief Executive Officer Trevor Milton said the company plans to build more than 700 hydrogen stations across the United States and Canada by 2028 and the company has nearly $ 9 billion worth of pre-orders, though its trucks are still in the prototype phase.

“We are building to order, not speculation, and are very excited for what’s to come,” Milton said, in a not-so-veiled dig at Tesla, which launched its all-electric Semi in November.

Tesla promises its Semi will be delivered next year with a range of up to 500 miles on a single charge. It has more than 450 reservations so far – including 40 from Anheuser-Busch — but faces skepticism over range, payload, and cost.

The fight between Nikola and Tesla — both companies named after the Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla — spilled from the highway to the courtroom this week when Nikola sued Tesla alleging design patent infringements.

On Tuesday, zero-emissions truck startup Nikola Motor Company sued Tesla for allegedly infringing on its design patents. Nikola says that Tesla’s Semi, which was revealed in November 2017, too closely resembles its Nikola One, a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle that was revealed in December 2016. (Somewhere, the ghost of Nikola Tesla is feeling very conflicted.)

Nikola is currently based in Salt Lake City, Utah, but it’s planning to move its headquarters to Phoenix, Arizona, in July. The patent lawsuit (PDF) was filed in US District Court for the Federal District of Arizona. Nikola is asking for $ 2 billion in damages.

The hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle startup filed design patents on its Class 8 truck in December 2015 and showed off a real-world prototype in December 2016 (you can read Ars’ coverage of that announcement here). Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced in July 2016 that his company was just beginning to build a semi truck.

The Invisible Hours turns Nikola Tesla’s murder into a VR whodunit https://briefnews.eu/the-invisible-hours-turns-nikola-teslas-murder-into-a-vr-whodunit/ https://briefnews.eu/the-invisible-hours-turns-nikola-teslas-murder-into-a-vr-whodunit/#respond Wed, 08 Nov 2017 21:03:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-invisible-hours-turns-nikola-teslas-murder-into-a-vr-whodunit/

Nikola Tesla is dead, and his murderer is somewhere in the house. But finding them isn’t going to be straightforward. In The Invisible Hours, a virtual reality mystery game, you’ll observe seven characters, eavesdrop on their conversations, and glean their secrets to unravel what happened to Tesla and why. It’s the latest title from Spain-based indie studio Tequila Works, and it’s available on the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR for $ 30.

Everything happens in real time in The Invisible Hours, though you may fast-forward, rewind, and pause so that you can freely explore. The bulk of this adventure takes place in Tesla’s mansion, where the cast of characters have gathered for various reasons. Some are there by invitation, others are employees; all are haunted by events in their pasts. You can examine objects and photographs, and read notes and diary entries that go deeper into each character’s backstory as well as what Tesla was working on before his demise.

The Tequila Works team was inspired by classic murder mysteries by authors like Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, along with films by Alfred Hitchcock. Tequila Works writer and narrative director Rob Yescombe points to Christopher Nolan’s work, particularly The Prestige and Memento because of the nonlinear structure of The Invisible Hours.

As you follow the characters around the virtual world, you learn pieces of the story from that person’s interactions. But you’re also missing what’s happening at the other side of the house. It’s a game that you can sink into and requires several play-throughs to totally understand every facet of what’s occurred.

“Your understanding of the narrative really changes depending on how you choose to explore it,” said Yescombe. “All-out action is great fun in VR – shout out to the folks on Sairento and Raw Data! – but sometimes you want something more relaxing; something truly story-driven that you can really steep yourself in for a few hours.”

Tequila Works CEO and creative director Raúl Rubio cites Hitchcock’s Rear Window as an influence as well, particularly James Stewart’s character as an “all-knowing silent witness.” The Invisible Hours zeroes in on the feeling of immersion and putting the player in the middle of stories that are unfolding all around them.

“So we built from scratch a new structure to support narrative in VR. Not in a window in front of you but as a ‘sphere’ surrounding you,” said Rubio. “Like real life, all stories would be happening around you in real time, either you are there to watch it or not. Not only that, your perception would define your truth as the so-called ‘story’ would be a series of memories or ‘dots’ of different storylines that you would connect in your mind to enhance your understanding in order to reach the ‘truth.’”

You don’t actually change any of the events in The Invisible Hours, so in a way it’s more like an immersive theater experience like Sleep No More, where you wander around a building and watch a version of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth play out around you. You can follow certain characters by gazing at them to “select” them, and they each have a kind of archetype that communicates expectations for you. There’s the butler, the glamorous actress, the prodigal heir, and so on. And there’s also Thomas Edison, whose rivalry with Tesla is legendary.

Tequila Works uses archetypes as well as historical figures to play with your expectations. And Edison and Tesla’s rivalry was ripe for intrigue. If you follow Edison’s “path,” you’ll discover different aspects of his personality and the way he viewed Tesla. And Tesla’s diary entries showed what his motivations were for his latest mysterious project.

“Of course it was the opportunity to include historical figures and putting them in situations that did not happen in our reality. That’s part of the mystery and part of some storylines,” said Rubio. “Tesla and Edison were rivals in real life. We wanted to explore what meant to be Tesla from Edison’s point of view. We wanted to know how Edison saw himself and how we interacted with others if Tesla suddenly was removed from the equation.”

“There’s something mysterious and magical about that period in history — when engineers were literally trying to invent the future infrastructure of society. It was an incredibly high stakes moment in time: whoever gets it right will be the author of the modern age, whoever gets it wrong goes to the grave forgotten,” said Yescombe. “That put Tesla and Edison in direct and very aggressive competition. But in our story, Tesla has started to avoid that competition – which makes Edison confused and nervous. He wants to know what Tesla is hiding. Is he really a depressed recluse like the newspapers say, or is it all part of some plan against Edison?”

One of the challenges in designing the game was that each character had to be the protagonist in their own story line. There are no side characters; if you decide to follow the heir, then his concerns and motivations have to be compelling enough on their own outside of the context of Tesla’s murder. And then there’s the fact that different characters interact and develop opinions and suspicions about each other.

“We’re all the main character and all our stories are simultaneous and interwoven; each is dependent on the existence of the others,” said Yescombe. “So that’s the structure we used for The Invisible Hours — multiple simultaneous stories; the structure of real life. And that’s why it’s such a good fit for virtual reality — because VR has the potential to mimic the feeling of real life.”

As for the best way to play the game, whether that’s wandering freely throughout Tesla’s mansion or following one character from beginning to end, Rubio and Yescombe says that that’s up to the player.

“For me personally the best way to enjoy it is as a social experience where several people can get into the play and then discuss what happened,” said Rubio. “Or you can use the 4D map and see what you missed, when and where a character flew off your radar so you can rewatch their events from a different angle.”

“For me, the true connoisseur plays without using time manipulation – from start to finish, no pausing, no rewinding – you just commit to ‘living’ in real time and miss whatever scenes you miss,” said Yescombe. “However, even though that’s my favourite way to experience the story, it was really, really important to us from the beginning that we didn’t make it needlessly difficult to explore the story. We wanted people to have total and absolute freedom in both time and space, to go anywhere they want any time they want. You can even start the story at the very end and work backwards if you want – and it will still have surprises for you.”

Salt Lake City-based Nikola Motor Company and German auto components giant Bosch are teaming up to build the Nikola One and Nikola Two—a pair of hydrogen-electric, long-haul trucks that will compete with the handful of other low-emissions trucks and powertrains that have been announced in mid-2017.

The Nikola One truck isn’t a new development, but the startup’s partnership with Bosch is. Last December, Nikola Motor Company announced that it would build a hydrogen-electric truck that would be able to travel 1,200 miles on a tank of hydrogen and deliver 1,000 horsepower and 2,000 foot-pounds of torque. The company said at the time that its truck, deemed the Nikola One, would be market-ready by 2020.

Now, that market-ready date has been pushed back to 2021, but adding Bosch’s experience into the mix no doubt helps firm up Nikola Motor Company’s projections. According to a press release from the startup, the class 8 Nikola One and Nikola Two will now be built on Bosch’s eAxle—an integrated unit blending motor, power electronics, and transmission. Bosch’s eAxle was only just announced this January.

It’s a good day to celebrate the life of the Serbian-American engineer and physicist: Without Tesla, you might not be able to affordably power your home, let alone read this sentence.

Tesla filed more than 300 patents during his 86 years of life, and his inventions helped pave the way for alternating current (AC), electric motors, radios, fluorescent lights, lasers, and remote controls, among many other things.

Some of his ideas later in life, however, seem strange even now. He once described plans for a death ray, for example, and eluded to another idea for an impenetrable “wall of force” to block and destroy foreign invasions.

Here’s a glimpse into the remarkable life of one of history’s most important — and eccentric — geniuses.

Tanya Lewis wrote a previous version of this story.

Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856 in Smiljan in the Austo-Hungarian Empire (modern-day Croatia).

His father, Milutin Tesla, was a Serbian Orthodox Priest and his mother, Djuka Mandic, was an inventor of household appliances.

In college, Tesla was initially interested in studying physics and mathematics, but soon became fascinated by electricity.

He attended the Realschule, Karlstadt in 1873, the Polytechnic Institute in Graz, Austria and the University of Prague. He took a job as an electrical engineer at a telephone company in Budapest in 1881.

He developed the concept of an induction motor while walking in a park with a friend.

Later, while he was in Strasbourg, France in 1883, he built a prototype of the induction motor (an AC motor powered by electromagnetic induction) and tested it successfully. Since he couldn’t get anyone in Europe interested in it, Tesla came to the United States to work for Thomas Edison in New York.

In 1895, he designed the first hydroelectric power plant in the Falls, a major victory for alternating current. A statue was later erected on Goat Island in Tesla’s honor.

Edison favored direct current or DC (which flows in one direction), while Tesla favored alternating current or AC (which changes direction periodically). This led to the “war of the currents,” which Tesla eventually won because of AC’s greater efficiency.

Tesla also worked closely with industrialist and inventor George Westinghouse, and their partnership helped establish electricity across America.

Tesla wrote a classic paper called “A New System of Alternating Current Motors and Transformers,” in 1888, in which he introduced the concept of his motors and electrical systems. The work caught Westinghouse’s attention, and they ended up partnering to work on bringing electricity to the rest of the country.

In 1891, Tesla developed an induction coil that produced high-frequency alternating currents, now known as the Tesla coil. He used it in experiments to produce electric lighting, X-rays, and wireless power, and it became the basis of radio and TV. Today, the coils are mostly used in educational displays and entertainment.

The invention of radio is often credited to Guglielmo Marconi, who made the first transatlantic radio transmission in 1901. But Tesla developed patents for the basic elements of a radio transmitter that were later used by Marconi — a point that led the two into a court battle.

The FBI kept a dossier on Tesla throughout his life in the US, but kept it classified until 2011, when the bureau publicly released 250 pages.

In 1943, when Tesla died, electrical engineer and military technology researcher John G. Trump— who an April 2016 New Yorker articledubbed President Trump’s “nuclear” uncle — examined Tesla’s effects for the FBI and reported his findings.

John Trump reportedly told the Bureau: “Tesla’s ‘thoughts and efforts during at least the past 15 years were primarily of a speculative, philosophical, and somewhat promotional character,’ but ‘did not include new, sound, workable principles or methods for realizing such results.'”

Tesla used to take walks to the park to feed the pigeons. He developed an unusual relationship with a white pigeon that used to visit him every day.

“I loved that pigeon as a man loves a women, and she loved me. As long as I had her, there was a purpose to my life,” Tesla reportedly said.
