Nier: Automata was one of the most-talked about games of 2017. The action role-playing game sold over 2.5 million copies after its February 2017 debut and has attracted a following that’s fallen in love with its unique, postapocalyptic world (and, to be honest, sexy androids). This is a surprising feat for a sequel for a 2010 game, Nier, that…Read More

Model builder and Kotaku reader Kevin Derken, whose work we’ve featured on the site before, went and built himself a couple of replicas of the lil’ robots from Nier: Automata.
These are built entirely from scratch. Kevin modelled the robots on his computer, 3D-printed them out, added a ball joint from a Gundam model to articulate the arms then painted them. For scale, their heads are around the size of tennis balls, while the whole model is about as big as a coffee mug.
If you’re in NYC this weekend, Kevin’s going to be displaying the models (and a bunch of his other work) at the Five Points Festival.

Nier: Automata came out two months ago on PC. It’s a really good game, and a clear standout during an unusually strong spring. So why the heck is the PC version still loaded with basic bugs and other problems that haven’t been patched?
I spent last weekend blasting through Nier: Automata on PC. I got endings B, C, D and E and… well, you should really play this game. It’s great. For all its positive attributes, though, it has significant issues on PC. Crashes, weird performance dips, locked white screens, and problems with funky resolutions affect even the most powerful PCs. This reddit list from a month ago catalogues many of the issues to hit PC players.
In an official statement on March 22, the developers informed players that “we appreciate all your feedback and are investigating the issues that have been reported.” Radio silence since then. Yesterday I asked the game’s publisher Square Enix if there was any news on a patch or update, and they sent me a similar quote from the development team: “We are continually working with the parties involved to investigate and improve the situation with the Steam version.”
In the meantime, they’ve released one piece of paid DLC, which included some new challenges and costumes. Each official Steam update about the DLC has been trailed by a collection of frustrated comments, presumably from people who own the game. “Patch your damn game!” “Fix the game before releasing DLC.” “Yeah, ignore the buyers even more while you hurry up to release a crap DLC to milk more money.” And so on.
Happily for those of us who just wanted to play this (again, very good!) game without waiting for a patch, a couple days after it hit Steam, a user who goes by Kaldaien released the Fix Automata Resolution (FAR) patch. Kaldaien’s patch helps Nier work in full screen at a proper resolution while also addressing some general performance issues. The patch has become indispensable for a lot of PC players, maybe even most. I certainly use it. Without the FAR patch, Nier is incapable of running in fullscreen at my monitor’s native 1440p resolution. It resizes a stretched-out, lower-resolution image, even though the menus tell me it’s running in 1440p.
Helpful as it is, FAR is not a perfect solution. My Windows mouse cursor still appears over the game after loading screens, and I have to regularly move it over to the side of the screen so it isn’t annoyingly in the way. Most times I boot up Nier, FAR requires an update, which aborts the boot process. It also gets grumpy if I try to start the game while running FRAPS, which, fine, but it’s pretty pushy about it. While FAR does seem to help with some performance issues, I still get odd hitches and frame-rate drops from time to time. Given the hardware I’m using, it doesn’t feel like those should be happening. And I’ve seen plenty of people reporting all manner of crashes and freezes that FAR doesn’t claim to address in the first place.
It’s a strange state of affairs when a fan patch remains this crucial for this long on a high profile, big budget game like Nier. Some of the issues still affecting PC gamers are the kinds of things that would be immediately patched out of most PC games. Take, for example, the fundamental thing FAR is fixing: the game is displaying at the wrong resolution. I don’t know from game development, but that doesn’t seem like a complicated problem that should require months of work in order to fix. FAR was able to remedy the issue with a minimum of fuss almost immediately after Nier hit Steam. The Borderless Gaming app also worked for me right out of the gate simply by forcing the game to display in windowed borderless mode at the proper resolution.
Nier: Automata is a hell of a game, and it’s a shame so many people have to jump through hoops just to make it run properly. A fan-made patch shouldn’t have to carry a game this big for this long.

If you, like me, picked up Nier: Automata on PlayStation 4 during the Golden Week sale, here is a tip that will CHANGE EVERYTHING: Remap the buttons.
As you may notice when you first start playing Nier, the default control setup has a few weird quirks. Evade is mapped to R2 while shooting is mapped to R1, making it tough to dodge while you’re also firing bullets (which you want to be doing constantly). Lock-on is mapped to L2 and your pod’s special attack is mapped to L1, so you have to do some uncomfortable finger twisting if you want to shoot laser beams at an enemy you’re targeting.
Wisely, the folks at Square Enix and Platinum decided to offer full button remapping. Here are the two tweaks I made that turned Nier: Automata into a way better game:
1) Swapped Evade (R2) with Action (Circle).
2) Swapped Pod Program (L1) with Toggle Light (L3)
My setup now looks like this:

Evade on circle feels far more natural than it does on R2, and being able to shoot laser beams at enemies while ALSO targeting them is much, much better than the alternative. Those two tweaks were a game-changer for me.
Also, I’m about five hours into Nier: Automata and it turns out it’s pretty good. Why didn’t anyone mention that anywhere on the internet?

In this latest instalment of the excellent toco toco TV, everyone gets to remotely hang out with Yoko Taro, the director of Nier: Automata.
It’s not just an interview about his processes and the game; like the other episodes in the series, it takes you to a place of great importance in Taro’s career/life, in this case an arcade specialising in vintage pinball machines, before closing out with some drinks with some of Nier’s other key developers.
If you’ve never watched an episode of toco toco before, and have any interest whatsoever in game development, you really should, it’s a fantastic series.

]]>My current video game poisons of choice are Nier: Automata and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. One is a wild science fiction slash-fest jam packed with philosophy and the other is just about the most adventurous feeling game ever. I’ve had a blast playing them but from time to time, I would notice graphics or performance hiccups that would bring me out of an otherwise great experience. I was forced to examine how these game handle their technical shortcomings and I think I’ve come to two distinct conclusions.
We’ll start with Breath of the Wild. This is the more straight forward matter of analysis. It has a vast game world that lends itself to exploration but it often runs into small problems. Areas with high foliage counts will drop framerate, textures don’t hold up to close scrutiny, enemies pop suddenly into view, and there’s noticeable aliasing.
Breath of the Wild is conscious of these limitations. It’s a launch title on new hardware that wasn’t even planned for that system when it was first made. To pack so much into the game, visual sacrifices were made and stylization became the name of the game. Breath of the Wild lacks the drastic art direction of Wind Waker but still ambles down that road. Characters and creatures in the world have a noticeably messy quality to them.
But this messiness is consistent. It’s all throughout the world, in creatures and on the rocky cliffs. And because of this, while graphical shortcomings might draw the eye, they never threaten the experience because the rules of the world don’t change. It never feels random. Lacking the attempts at fidelity that games like Skyrim or Horizon Zero Dawn have, Breath of the Wild sidesteps being hampered by technical limitation through a clear style and aesthetic that is applied throughout the game space.
If a consistent style and visual ruleset is one way to address technical limitations or hardware restrictions, what’s the other? Well, it’s a bit more abstract but we can boil some of it down to themes. Nier: Automata is a game concerned with a few fundamental concepts. Among these are issues of dual identity, the breakdown of society, the limits artificial life, and the blurred lines between physical existence and a digital self.
In some cases, these themes are expressed cogently through gameplay. Shifts in camera perspective or even character perspective stress the idea that our perception of the game world is mutable. There’s a sense that things can breakdown or reform based on our growing information. When playing as 9S, we can hack into enemies to fight them, highlighting the thin line between the real world and a digital space. These spaces are destructible and can blink out of existence with too much pressure.
This begins to toss meaning into any graphics abnormality we might find. In the over world, I often found myself looking at buildings that would gain a severe lack of definition as I moved away. Because the game already stresses the fragility of digital space within its fiction, we can begin to see that same fragility reflected in the spaces we navigate.
Functionally, the shifts and changes in environmental details call to mind the game’s focus on shifting worlds, redefined spaces, and decay. This is a world far after the end, where technology has adapted to survive beyond expectation. When I walk through the over world and spy incongruities in the game’s fidelity, it feels in line with the messages that Nier: Automata wants to communicate.
There’s also the postmodern element to consider. While self reference isn’t necessarily a hallmark of post-modern work, which has just as much to do with skepticism towards the entrenched ideologies that arose during the height of great empires, the use of self referential content within Nier: Automata does help establish it as a postmodern text. Tongue in cheek bad endings poke fun at the narrative and the player’s ability to throw it into confusion while a preoccupation with game systems and interfaces highlight the boundaries of the world.
Nier: Automata is a game that is concerned with rejecting grand ideas like rationality or an idealized humanity and by calling attention to the form of the game, it questions the validity of its own construction as well as undercut the player’s power by portraying it as something fickle and changeable. When a texture fails to load or area stutters as a new chuck is fetched from memory, Nier: Automata calls attention to itself in a way that, while probably unintended, still falls in line with the game’s tendencies to point out its own fragility.
A lot of this might sound like bending over backwards to dismiss a few poor textures. After all, a strange looking bit of graphics isn’t always profound. A cigar can be a cigar. A glitch can be a glitch. But examining how Breath of the Wild and Nier: Automata manage to avoid being crippled or weighed down by these aspect helps us understand the things in games that are more important than the visuals.
Consistent art direction and narrative design go a long way to imbuing even the accidental with meaning and these two games are wonderful case study in how, if you’ve got a solid enough core concept, very little can hold you back.

All of the Nier: Automota cosplay we’ve featured so far has been about 2B. So let’s mix it up a bit today and have some Eve shots instead.
