New cars are safer than old cars. Yeah, we know. Obviously. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration just released a report highlighting the added safety of newer cars and trucks over older cars and trucks, and attaching real data to an otherwise assumed theory is always a good idea.

There’s an entire PDF worth of numbers to back up the claim that driving newer is driving safer, but here are some of the most powerful data points worth seeing:

  • 55 percent: Occupants fatally injured in vehicles built prior to 1984
  • 53 percent: Occupants fatally injured in vehicles built between 1985 and 1992
  • 46 percent: Occupants fatally injured in vehicles built between 1993 and 1997
  • 42 percent: Occupants fatally injured in vehicles built between 1997 and 2002
  • 36 percent: Occupants fatally injured in vehicles built between 2002 and 2007
  • 31 percent: Occupants fatally injured in vehicles built between 2008 and 2012
  • 26 percent: Occupants fatally injured in vehicles built between 2013 and 2017

Those are statistics sure to catch anyone’s attention. They were gleaned from NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, and from an analysis of all passenger vehicle crashes that involved a fatality.

And the conclusion, as found by NHTSA, is this: “Using the most recent fatal crash data, this analysis supports previous research in finding that a higher proportion of the occupants of older MY vehicles suffered a fatal injury. In addition, the proportion of vehicle occupants who were fatally injured increases with the age of the vehicle.”

In a statement, NHTSA Deputy Administrator Heidi King added, “We encourage car buyers to select vehicles that meet their individual lifestyle, budget and transportation needs with the added assurance that they are making an investment in safety.”

WASHINGTON — A U.S. traffic safety regulator on Wednesday contradicted Tesla’s claim that the agency had found that its Autopilot technology significantly reduced crashes, saying that regulators “did not assess” the system’s effectiveness in a 2017 report.

Autopilot, a form of advanced cruise control, handles some driving tasks yet warns those behind the wheel they are always responsible for the vehicle’s safe operation, Tesla has said.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which issued the statement, and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating a fatal crash in March in which the driver was using Autopilot.

Following that fatality, Tesla pointed to a 2017 NHTSA report on a May 2016 fatality involving a driver using Autopilot. The report said crash rates fell by 40 percent after installation of Autopilot’s Autosteer function, and noted that this number was derived from Tesla airbag deployment data.

The agency said on Wednesday its crash rate comparison “did not evaluate whether Autosteer was engaged” and “did not assess the effectiveness of this technology.”

The agency described the Autopilot analysis in the 2017 report as a “cursory comparison” of airbag deployment rates before and after installation of the feature to determine whether models with Autosteer had higher crash rates. Such a finding “could have indicated that further investigation was necessary,” the agency said.

Tesla declined to comment.

In March, Tesla said that over a year ago, the U.S. government found that its first iteration of Autopilot reduced crash rates by as much as 40 percent. “Internal data confirms that recent updates to Autopilot have improved system reliability,” it added.

On Jan. 19, 2017, Elon Musk tweeted: “The data show that the Tesla vehicles crash rate dropped by almost 40 percent after Autosteer installation.” Autosteer, a system that automatically keeps the vehicle in the center of a lane, is part of the Autopilot technology package.

The 2017 NHTSA probe found no evidence of a defect. Investigations into the death of Walter Huang, the driver in the March 23 Tesla car crash, are ongoing.

The NTSB confirmed last month it had two other pending investigations of incidents involving Tesla vehicles, including an August 2017 Tesla battery fire in Lake Forest, California, after an owner lost control and ran the vehicle into his garage.

The NTSB previously faulted Tesla in the 2016 fatal crash in Florida in which Autopilot was engaged. NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said in 2017 that “system safeguards were lacking.”

He also noted that “Tesla allowed the driver to use the system outside of the environment for which it was designed, and the system gave far too much leeway to the driver to divert his attention.”

Tesla said it had improved the system since the crash.

Tesla on Wednesday told investors in its quarterly financial report that on March 15 it released a “significant Autopilot update” that has been well received by its customers.

The Trump administration hasn’t been shy about wanting to roll back emissions and fuel economy guidelines, but there’s been a key obstacle to that: California. It has a waiver permitting it to apply tougher emissions standards, and that (combined with support from 12 other states) effectively dictates the rules for automakers across the US. Officials may soon force California to honor looser federal standards, however. The Wall Street Journal has learned of an NHTSA proposal that would not only freeze increases on fuel emissions standards between 2020 and 2026, but would include “scenarios” that would let it override or even eliminate California’s authority to maintain its own increases.

The WSJ‘s sources didn’t say exactly how this override would work, and the proposal isn’t guaranteed to survive. Even if the proposal remains the same, it would still need EPA approval that isn’t expected given a “lack of consensus” in the administration. The NHTSA has declined to comment so far.

If the proposal went forward, though, it would risk triggering a wider legal battle. The administration has already lost a bid to delay fuel economy penalties, and California’s Air Resources Board is considering a lawsuit to counter the White House’s efforts to loosen emissions standards. It’s doubtful the Golden State would let the loss of authority go unchallenged. That, in turn, could lead to a protracted court battle and might even create a split where companies build different versions of cars for different states. Automakers have pushed for a unified fuel standard, but they might get just the opposite.

Honda’s North American unit and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed on Tuesday that a ruptured Takata airbag inflator in a Honda Civic caused the death of the driver on July 10.

The 2004 model car involved in the crash in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was under recall but had not received the repair, the company said, adding that the ruptured inflator in the vehicle was not the original one installed.

Takata air bag inflators have been linked to at least 18 deaths and 180 injuries around the world.

Honda has so far removed over 100,000 inflators from salvage yards and has requested that major online auction sites prohibit and stop the sale of affected airbags.

The Honda Civic Type R is one of the fastest and most capable hatchbacks around, but with a base MSRP of $ 34,775, it isn’t exactly the most affordable. The high base price is due in part to the mono-spec nature of the car: one trim with all the bells and whistles. That said, it seems that Honda may be working on a second model that ditches some equipment, presumably lowering the car’s price. This news was uncovered by The Truth About Cars.

TTAC was digging around in NHTSA filings when it discovered that Honda registered two Type Rs, one listed as a Touring model. Both cars use the same K20C1 turbocharged 2.0-liter and six speed manual, but the separate listing suggests less equipment. On most Hondas, the Touring package includes things like LED lighting, automatic climate control, premium audio and navigation. Expect the lesser Type R to ditch most or all of those features. Smaller wheels and less aggressive aero could be on the table, too.

There’s no official word yet from Honda, but as 2018 models roll onto dealer lots we’ll keep our ears to the ground.

UPDATE 9/19/17: NHTSA has upgraded its investigation to an engineering analysis after receiving reports of at least 27 engine fires, 19 of which have occurred since January 2015. None of the subject vehicles were involved in a crash when the fires started.

A fire risk on early-model Smart Fortwo microcars has prompted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to open an investigation, according to agency filings.

Between 2015 and October 2016, eight owners of 2008 and 2009 Fortwo microcars reported engine fires—three of which occurred in October and November. No injuries were reported. Six owners reported they smelled smoke, saw warning lights on the dash, or saw flames coming from the rear where the three-cylinder engine is mounted under the cargo hold. Two fires occurred when the car was stopped, including one in Oregon where the owner parked the car, stepped inside a friend’s house, and was alerted by a neighbor that his car was erupting in flames, the report said. Most of the reports cited fires that completely engulfed the car and declared them a total loss.

NHTSA is currently conducting a preliminary evaluation, after which it can upgrade the case to an engineering analysis and request more data from Mercedes-Benz. At this point, it is unclear what has caused the fires, if there are in fact manufacturer-caused defects, and if so, what other models may be affected.
