Timed with the eclipse, Google today revealed Android O stands for Android 8.0 Oreo. The next version of Google’s mobile operating system and the successor to Android Nougat not only got its name today, but Google also pushed the latest source code to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).

Google shared that Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Pixel, and Pixel XL builds have entered carrier testing. The company plans to start rolling out Android Oreo to these devices alongside Pixel C and Nexus Player in phases. Just like the Nexus 4 did not get Android Marshmallow and the Nexus 5 did not get Nougat, don’t expect the Nexus 6 and the Nexus 9 to get Android Oreo. If you enrolled a device in the Android Beta Program, you will also receive this final version of Android Oreo. Google also promised that hardware makers including Essential, General Mobile, HMD Global Home of Nokia Phones, Huawei, HTC, Kyocera, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Sharp, and Sony are scheduled to launch or upgrade devices to Android 8.0 Oreo “by the end of this year.”

Android Oreo offers of a slew of new features including background limits, notification channels and dots, Autofill APIs, Picture in Picture (see two apps at once), XML font resources, downloadable fonts, emoji compatibility, autosizing textview, adaptive icons, Webview enhancements, AAudio API, Google Play Protect, high-quality Bluetooth audio codecs, wide-gamut color for apps, security status in settings, tighter app install controls, as well as Java 8 APIs and runtime optimizations. Google is also promising to minimize unintentional overuse of battery from apps in the background, plus OS optimizations that should lead to faster boot times (up to twice as fast on Pixel) and smoother apps. Oh, and there are a bunch of redesigned emojis, including over 60 new emojis.

Since Android 1.5, Google has named each version of its mobile operating system after a sweet food — moving sequentially through the letters of the alphabet. The tradition started more than seven years ago. Here are all the releases so far:

  • Android 1.5 Cupcake (April 2009)
  • Android 1.6 Donut (September 2009)
  • Android 2.0/2.1 Éclair (October 2009, January 2010)
  • Android 2.2 Froyo (May 2010)
  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread (December 2010)
  • Android 3.0/3.1/3.2 Honeycomb (February 2011, May 2011, July 2011)
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (October 2011)
  • Android 4.1/4.2/4.3 Jelly Bean (July 2012, November 2012, July 2013)
  • Android 4.4 KitKat (October 2013)
  • Android 5.0/5.1 Lollipop (November 2014, March 2015)
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow (October 2015)
  • Android 7.0/7.1 Nougat (August 2016)

Google launched the first Android O developer preview in March, the second developer preview in May at its I/O 2017 developer conference, the third developer preview in June, and the fourth developer in July. Google slated the final version for release in Q3 2017, and now it’s finally here.

Last year, I was holding out for Android Nutella, and we got Nougat. This year, again despite the trademarking work it would require, I was holding out for Android Oreo. At I/O 2017, one of the snacks Google handed out were indeed Oreos.

Android Oreo was the most likely name for months, and today it’s finally official. Now the wait begins for the slow adoption of the latest Android version.

Nexus Studios finds ARKit’s tracking works with Google’s Cardboard https://briefnews.eu/nexus-studios-finds-arkits-tracking-works-with-googles-cardboard/ https://briefnews.eu/nexus-studios-finds-arkits-tracking-works-with-googles-cardboard/#respond Sun, 16 Jul 2017 11:44:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nexus-studios-finds-arkits-tracking-works-with-googles-cardboard/

This is interesting.

A company called Nexus Studios says it tested Apple’s ARKit tracking technology with a Cardboard VR headset and found it to do a suitable job. Tilt Brush artwork is said to have been placed throughout an outdoor environment with point clouds displayed in VR to show the location of real-world objects — operating as a kind of safety system.

“It’s possible to do both pass-through AR (where the single camera feed is displayed to both eyes), as well as inside out positional tracking for VR at around 60 frames per second on an iPhone 7,” according to the company. “That’s not enough for quick head movements, but as long as you are walking around and observing at a ‘gallery pace,’ the tracking does a pretty good job of keeping you in the right spot.”

We reached out for more information about the project and the quality of the tracking.

“The tracking is great, to be honest,” wrote Luke Ritchie, who heads a division of Nexus Studios called Interactive Arts, in an email. “As we said very quick movements and you’ll notice the 60fps – otherwise it’s pretty stable. We have found it OK for most easy going experiences. Quick movements and a longer duration can feel somewhat uncomfortable. We’re not suggesting it’s consumer ready by any means.”

Ritchie said they tested it up to 10 minutes at a time. We’re actually surprised it took this long for someone to test this out, but Ritchie believes they may be the first. The studio worked on a variety of other VR and AR projects including Google’s Rain or Shine.

Google reveals when it’ll stop supporting Pixel and Nexus phones https://briefnews.eu/google-reveals-when-itll-stop-supporting-pixel-and-nexus-phones/ https://briefnews.eu/google-reveals-when-itll-stop-supporting-pixel-and-nexus-phones/#respond Sun, 11 Jun 2017 07:29:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-reveals-when-itll-stop-supporting-pixel-and-nexus-phones/

Wondering when you should upgrade your Nexus or Pixel? Google has updated its support page to reflect when it will no longer offer telephone and online support for the devices, and you can use that info to make a decision. In the past, the big G promised that its phones will get Android updates for at least two years and security updates for at least three years after they’re released. Once it security updates stop, phone and online support stop, as well.

Based on the info Google listed on its support page, it’s staying true to its word. The Pixel and the Pixel XL, which were released in 2016, will get the latest Android updates until October 2018. They’ll get security updates until October 2019, the same month Google will stop providing customer service for them.

Mountain View will also stop supporting the Huawei-made Nexus 6P and the LG-made 5X in September 2018, a year after they stop getting new OS updates. If you still own a Nexus 6 or a 9, you’ll only get security updates until October this year — after that, you can’t call or chat with Google anymore in case you encounter issues with your device.

Following its release last week, Blizzard has confirmed the list of new Heroes of the Storm 2.0 rewards that can be earned through the Nexus Challenge.

This week’s looks set to be the most sought-after, with Heroes of the Storm players now able to grab that Overwatch Officer D.Va skin.

Other HotS bonuses include the Busan Police Hovercycle Mount, with a total of four quests set to go live until the new challenge ends on May 22.

The Overwatch Officer D.Va skin can be used in Overwatch and was one of the main standout reveals from the 2.0 launch event.

Fans will need to complete 5 more games with a friend in Quick Match, Unranked, or Ranked to earn the new Overwatch PC bonus.

Last week’s Heroes of the Storm Nexus Challenge Quest was all about getting some good gear for Genji, who was recently added to the character roster.

Hero rewards included: Orochi Hovercycle Mount (6 color variations), Oni Genji Warbanner, Oni Spray and Oni Genji Portrait.

For Overwatch, there was the Oni Genji Skin, Oni Genji Player Icon and Oni Genji Spray.

In-game rewards in both Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch are offered to players who complete games while partied with a friend.

D.Va is confirmed as the next character to be crossing over to Heroes of the Storm at a later date.

Here’s more information on how the new Nexus Challenge 2.0 will run:

  • A new quest will begin each week during the Nexus Challenge 2.0 event.
  • Only one Nexus Challenge 2.0 quest will activate in players’ Quest Logs at any given time.
  • Subsequent quests will not appear until their start dates have passed, and all of the player’s previous Nexus Challenge 2.0 quests have been completed.
  • For example: Players who wait until the final day of the event to begin their Nexus Challenge 2.0 quests (not recommended!) can still complete all four quests, but must do so one at a time.

Remaining Quest Chain 2.0 and Overwatch Rewards:

Quest 2: Starts after May 2

Google announces last security update dates for Nexus and Android phones https://briefnews.eu/google-announces-last-security-update-dates-for-nexus-and-android-phones/ https://briefnews.eu/google-announces-last-security-update-dates-for-nexus-and-android-phones/#respond Thu, 27 Apr 2017 19:40:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-announces-last-security-update-dates-for-nexus-and-android-phones/

While using a phone with an outdated operating system is occasionally annoying, the thing that signifies the true death of a smartphone is when it stops getting security patches. Google has previously announced when various Nexus phones would stop getting OS updates, and the company has updated that list to note when phones in the Nexus and Pixel lines will stop getting security updates, as noted by Droid Life.

None of this is strictly news, given that Google has had a policy in place for a while that Nexus and Pixel devices will “get security patches for at least 3 years from when the device first became available on the Google Store, or at least 18 months from when the Google Store last sold the device, whichever is longer.” But it’s nice to have everything laid out in one place to easily find out when your phone won’t get updates.

Lawsuit takes aim at Google, Huawei over Nexus 6P battery issues https://briefnews.eu/lawsuit-takes-aim-at-google-huawei-over-nexus-6p-battery-issues/ https://briefnews.eu/lawsuit-takes-aim-at-google-huawei-over-nexus-6p-battery-issues/#respond Sat, 22 Apr 2017 06:21:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lawsuit-takes-aim-at-google-huawei-over-nexus-6p-battery-issues/

A federal class action complaint has been filed accusing Google and Huawei of fraud, breaching warranty and improperly handling customer complaints after a number of Nexus 6P smartphones unexpectedly shut down and became trapped in “boot loop” cycles. The suit was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, and it claims Google and Huawei have never publicly admitted there were issues with the Nexus 6P, even while they continued to sell the phone.

The Nexus 6P hit the market in late 2015. It’s a $ 500 smartphone with a 5.7 inch screen that was, overall, a welcome improvement over the previous year’s Nexus 6. As long as it didn’t suddenly shut off with full battery, that is.

The plaintiffs in today’s lawsuit want to force Google and Huawei to issue a recall or repair program, and provide monetary compensation to those affected. The filing includes a few pages of Reddit comments and tweets from dissatisfied Nexus 6P customers; it notes the boot looping complaints began around September 2016.

“When bootlooping occurs, the phone is essentially a very expensive paperweight,” the suit reads. “After the Defect occurs, the Phone no longer operates whatsoever. It cannot be used to make calls, send text messages, access the internet, or use any other function available on the Phone. Consumers lose all access to any data or information stored on the Phone, including any photographs or other intellectual property.”

The Nexus 6P joins a handful of other past-gen Android phones embroiled in lawsuits over dysfunctional devices, including LG’s G4, V10, G5, V20 and even the Nexus 5X.

A few weeks ago, Ars wrote about a proposed class-action lawsuit targeting two of LG’s flagship devices, the G4 and V10. The suit (PDF) complained of a well-known bootloop issue that either bricked the devices or slowed them to a snail’s pace—all to the backdrop of warranties or LG failing to fix the problem. After we published the story, many Android fans were wondering why other LG phones that suffered the same issues were not included in the original lawsuit.

Wait no longer: the Southern California federal lawsuit has been amended (PDF) to now include the Nexus 5X, and the LG G5 and LG V20. The updated lawsuit covers every high-profile LG phone from 2015 and 2016.

Random reboots

Among other things, the suit claims that the phones’ processors were inadequately soldered to the motherboard, rendering them “unable to withstand the heat.” Initially, the phones begin to freeze, suffer slowdowns, overheat, and reboot at random. Eventually, the suit says, they fail.

Firmware Updates Rolling Out For Samsung Galaxy S7, Nexus 6, LG G4, Moto Z Play & More https://briefnews.eu/firmware-updates-rolling-out-for-samsung-galaxy-s7-nexus-6-lg-g4-moto-z-play-more/ https://briefnews.eu/firmware-updates-rolling-out-for-samsung-galaxy-s7-nexus-6-lg-g4-moto-z-play-more/#respond Sun, 29 Jan 2017 12:55:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/firmware-updates-rolling-out-for-samsung-galaxy-s7-nexus-6-lg-g4-moto-z-play-more/ Samsung Galaxy S7 is on display at CES 2017.

Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, and other Android devices are getting their respective firmware updates, most of them finally experiencing the Nougat taste. The latest Android Nougat news for Samsung’s 2016 flag bearer revealed that the highly-anticipated firmware is now rolling out in India.

As part of the global rollout of the Android Nougat 7.0 update for Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, units in India should be starting to receive the latest firmware via OTA. The firmware was recently spotted in Samsung Galaxy S7 units in France (via Orange carrier) as well as in Malaysia.

According to GSM Arena, the Nougat update pushed out in India weighs about 1.3 GB, bringing in not only the OS but also brings in security improvements and enhancements for features like TouchWiz and the Always-on-Display.

Furthermore, it seems like Samsung will launch its wireless payment service soon in the country. Sam Mobile reported that upon installing the Android 7.0 Nougat update to Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, a teaser message will pop up which noted the following:

“The future of payments is coming soon.”

Users should also find the Samsung Pay application installed in their device after getting the OTA update.

Meanwhile, the rugged, waterproof and shatter-resistant variant of the 2016 flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active, could get the Android Nougat update soon. An AT&T exclusive, the Active model running on Android 7.0 Nougat recently received a Wi-Fi certification from Wi-Fi Alliance. It arrived almost one month after it was seen paying a visit to GFXBench, a famous benchmarking website.

Another Samsung device that could get the Nougat update very soon is the Galaxy Tab S2 as its Wi-Fi certification listing also showed the device being powered by the latest mobile operating system from Google.

Aside from Samsung, Motorola is also starting to offer the Nougat update for certain smartphones. The firmware carrying the NPN25.137-15-2 version is currently available for Moto Z Play units in Europe bringing in Android 7.0 Nougat, according to Android Soul. The Nougat update for Moto Z Play in the U.S. is expected to happen in March 2017.

While Samsung and Motorola are busy pushing out the Nougat update for select devices, some Android devices seem to be experiencing roadblocks. For instance, the Nougat rollout for HTC 10 specifically in mainland Europe was stopped for the second time. The Product and Services Director of the Taiwanese phone maker, Graham Wheeler, disclosed the situation via a Twitter post, citing a technical issue as the reason for temporarily ceasing again the release of the firmware. Also, Wheeler expects that the Android Nougat update will commence rolling out again in February.

Owners of the Chinese smartphone, ZTE Axon 7, who are expecting to get the Android Nougat update this month will, unfortunately, have to wait longer. A rough English translation of the ZTE Germany’s Facebook post revealed that they are currently in beta post, but sadly, the software are not meeting the “quality standards.”A specific release date for Axon 7’s Nougat update was not revealed but the timeframe was stretched to Q1 2017. This means that the update could arrive either in February or March.

In order to quickly work on the issues and rollout the firmware update as soon as possible, ZTE is accepting more beta testers. “So we can speed up this process, we are doubling the number of our beta testers, our internal team support!,” the translated version of the Facebook post reads.

Aside from the Android Nougat update, security patches are also rolling out for various devices. One of the major US carriers, T-Mobile, recently released the January security update for LG G4. Aside from strengthening the phone’s security, the 90MB firmware with version number H81120r makes no other changes to the OS as it is still based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, according to the change log posted on T-Mobile LG G4’s official support page.

AT&T also released a security update for Motorola Nexus 6. The NBD91W firmware, weighing in 26MB, should be available via OTA and should bump the phone to January security level.
